Communion We are celebrating the Lord s Supper today. What is this Sacrament? It is the receiving of Christ s body and blood, together with the bread and wine, for the assurance of the forgiveness of our sins (Mt. 26:17-29; 1 Cor. 11:23-29). It is an expression of unity among us when it comes to the teachings of Jesus (Jn. 8:31,32). If you are visiting with us today, please speak with one of our Pastors about receiving this Sacrament. CONFESSION OF SINS P: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. Answer us not in judgment on our sins, but in peace and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. THE WORD FIRST LESSON Exodus 4:1-17 There is a strong contrast in this exchange between a God who is eager to give blessings and a prophet who is hesitant to accept them. Even the ability to receive God's blessings is made possible by his power. 4 Moses answered, What if they do not believe me or listen to me and say, The LORD did not appear to you? 2 Then the LORD said to him, What is that in your hand? A staff, he replied. 3 The LORD said, Throw it on the ground. Moses threw it on the ground and it became a snake, and he ran from it. 4 Then the LORD said to him, Reach out your hand and take it by the tail. So Moses reached out and took hold of the 6

7 snake and it turned back into a staff in his hand. 5 This, said the LORD, is so that they may believe that the LORD, the God of their fathers the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob has appeared to you. 6 Then the LORD said, Put your hand inside your cloak. So Moses put his hand into his cloak, and when he took it out, the skin was leprous it had become as white as snow. 7 Now put it back into your cloak, he said. So Moses put his hand back into his cloak, and when he took it out, it was restored, like the rest of his flesh. 8 Then the LORD said, If they do not believe you or pay attention to the first sign, they may believe the second. 9 But if they do not believe these two signs or listen to you, take some water from the Nile and pour it on the dry ground. The water you take from the river will become blood on the ground. 10 Moses said to the LORD, Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue. 11 The LORD said to him, Who gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute? Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, the LORD? 12 Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say. 13 But Moses said, Pardon your servant, Lord. Please send someone else. 14 Then the LORD s anger burned against Moses and he said, What about your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know he can speak well. He is already on his way to meet you, and he will be glad to see you. 15 You shall speak to him and put words in his mouth; I will help both of you speak and will teach you what to do. 16 He will speak to the people for you, and it will be as if he were your mouth and as if you were God to him. 17 But take this staff in your hand so you can perform the signs with it. PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 142 A Psalm of David. When he was in the cave. A prayer. P: I cry aloud to the Lord; I lift up my voice to the LORD for mercy. C: I pour out my complaint before him; before him I tell my trouble. P: When my spirit grows faint within me, it is you who know my way. C: Look to my right and see; no one is concerned for me. I have no refuge; no one cares for my life. P: I cry to you, O LORD; I say, You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living. 7

8 C: Listen to my cry, for I am in desperate need; rescue me from those who pursue me, for they are too strong for me. P: Set me free from my prison, that I may praise your name. C: Then the righteous will gather about me because of your goodness to me. SECOND LESSON Acts 2:22-32 God shows his supreme, sovereign control over all things by turning the greatest of evils (Jesus' crucifixion) into the greatest of blessings (the salvation of the world). That same power is at work among us as God opens our eyes to see his blessings in Jesus. 22 Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. 23 This man was handed over to you by God s deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. 24 But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. 25 David said about him: 8

9 I saw the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. 26 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest in hope, 27 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, you will not let your holy one see decay. 28 You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence. 29 Fellow Israelites, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day. 30 But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. 31 Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay. 32 God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it. VERSE OF THE DAY 2 Timothy 4:18 P: Alleluia. The Lord will rescue me from every evil and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. Alleluia. Worship services center around the Gospel Reading; we rise to highlight its function After the announcement of the Gospel, the congregation sings: GOSPEL Mark 10:46-52 Blind Bartimaeus knew his need. But more importantly, he knew the One whose power could meet his need. Jesus is the cause, the source, and content of our faith and all the blessings that come with it. 46 Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (which means son of Timaeus ), was sitting by the roadside begging. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! 9

10 48 Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, Son of David, have mercy on me! 49 Jesus stopped and said, Call him. So they called to the blind man, Cheer up! On your feet! He s calling you. 50 Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus. 51 What do you want me to do for you? Jesus asked him. The blind man said, Rabbi, I want to see. 52 Go, said Jesus, your faith has healed you. Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road. After the Gospel, the congregation sings: NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. 12 PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P: Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we praise you for reconciling us to yourself through the sufferings and death of your dear Son. Through him we have confidence to enter into your presence and to bring you our prayers and petitions. Out of the infinite bounty of your goodness, grant us a rich measure of your Spirit. Let the love of Christ fill your Church, so that it may flourish in all good works. Help us show love and compassion for all who are in need. Bestow on the nations of the earth the knowledge of your mercy, that they may turn to you, the only God, and find salvation in you. Strengthen our faith so that we unfailingly come to you in prayer for all our bodily needs. Give a special measure of your power to those who are sorrowful or mourning, to those who are in pain or sickness, to those who may be in temptation or peril, that they may receive your blessed aid. And help us patiently endure any chastening and afflictions you permit to come into our lives, knowing that you are using them in love to prepare us for that joyful communion with you, which is ours for all eternity. Accept our prayers and intercessions, and provide for all our needs not because we are worthy but for the sake of Jesus our Savior. C: Amen. LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread; Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. 17 WEEKLY NEWS AND NOTES CALL NEWS Pastor Werre has declined the call to serve at Bethlehem. The next call meeting is scheduled for Sunday, November 4 th following the 10:30 a.m. service in Menomonee Falls. STEWARDSHIP CORNER: ARE YOU A DISCIPLE OR SIMPLY A MEMBER? Per Psalm 24:1 ( The earth is the Lord s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it. ) we know that everything we have belongs to God and that our role is that of stewards or managers striving to make certain that God s belongings are used to His glory. This leads us to a poignant relationship question, as stewards are we simply members of Bethlehem or have we taken the next step and allowed the Holy Spirit to tap us on the shoulder as disciples of Jesus? There are glaring distinctions between being a member and serving as a disciple. A member is a steward whose primary relationship is with the congregation. Ministry is viewed as something the professionals (pastors and teachers) do. After all, that s why money is given to the church so the pastors and teachers can be paid to do the job of ministry. The church s job is to get and keep members and not expect too much of them so that they don t go to some other church. We need to keep adding members to be able to meet our ever increasing budget! Being a member can often be frustrating! A disciple is a steward whose primary relationship is with Jesus. The role of a disciple is to grow deeper in their relationship with Jesus and to tell others about Jesus. Ministry is viewed as a partnership with the pastor, teachers, and other disciples. The goal is to add disciples and not simply to add to the headcount on a membership roster. The expectations of discipleship are demanding; daily prayer, daily scripture reading, weekly worship, generous giving, serving others in Jesus name, and sharing the saving faith with others. The rewards of discipleship are numerous! Matthew 25:14-30 (The Parable of the Bags of Gold) further clarifies the distinction between a member and a disciple. The two servants (stewards) who invested the master s gold to produce more for their master demonstrated discipleship. The servant who buried the master s gold out of a fear of failure and laziness demonstrated membership. Pray that the Holy Spirit elevates us all to be disciples so that one day we will hear our Master say, Well done, good and faithful servant!.. Come and share your master s happiness! (Matt. 25:21) Next Time: How we should respond to the loving Owner. 17

GERMANTOWN CHRISTMAS PARADE Bethlehem will be a part of this year's Germantown Christmas Parade on Saturday, November 10 th at 1:30 p.m. This is a wonderful opportunity to show our community that we are here to serve them, especially during this special season of the year.
