The author begins by sharing how a young leukemia victim whom the church prayed for was healed; then a year later another child was found with leukemia and the church prayed again and the child died. The author goes on to site cases of seeming inconsistencies with who lives and who dies. He concludes the first chapter with the statement that the reason this is a problem is that we don t know God.
