NOBTS Core Values and Core Value Focus Doctrinal Integrity Knowing that the Bible is the Word of God, we believe it, teach it, proclaim it, and submit to it. The doctrinal statements used in our evaluations are our Articles of Religious Belief and the Baptist Faith and Message Statement. Spiritual Vitality We are a worshiping community, with both personal spirituality and gathering together as a Seminary for the praise and adoration of God and instruction in His Word. Mission Focus We are not here merely to get an education or to give one. We are here to change the world by fulfilling the Great Commission and the Great Commandments through the local church and its ministries. Characteristic Excellence What we do, we do to the utmost of our abilities and resources as a testimony to the glory of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Servant Leadership We follow the model of Jesus and exert leadership and influence through the nurture and encouragement of those around us. Annually, the President will designate a core value that will become the focus of pedagogy for the year. For academic year that Core Value is Characteristic Excellence.
2 Course Description This special event seminar is held in conjunction with a selected conference featuring leadership training for single adults leaders. The seminar is scheduled and developed around the annual theme for the conference. The purpose of the seminar is to explore the challenges of ministry, service and worship for singles in the contemporary church. Students will choose from numerous professional development seminars to attend. In addition to attending these seminars, students will complete designated course assignments. Special Seminar Considerations: Conference Fee: In addition to tuition, course requires a registration fee for the Single Focused Church conference. Register at Extracurricular events and activities may be scheduled. If you choose to participate they will be at your personal expense if additional fees apply. Housing and Meals: All travel, food and room costs are the responsibility of the student. Blackboard Enrollment. Please enroll yourself in our class on Blackboard. Communication will be primarily through s via Blackboard. Assignments will be posted and collected on Blackboard. Seminar Meetings. We will meet at the conference site, Thursday 1:00pm, February 2, 2017, prior to the start of the conference. Specific room location is to be determined. Other dialogue and debriefing times are to be determined. Student Learning Outcomes 1. Students will be able to identify characteristics of contemporary single adults and ministry strategies available to reach and disciple them. 2. Students will be able to appreciate and empathize with the unique developmental, societal, and cultural issues relevant to single adults and single adult ministry. 3. Students will be able to formulate a ministry strategy to reach and disciple unchurched single adults and develop models for equipping leaders to single adults. Required Textbooks Cavanaugh, Michael. The Power and Purpose of Singleness. New Kensington, PA: Whitaker House, Hoffeditz, David. They Were Single Too: 8 Biblical Role Models. Grand Rapids, MI: Kregel Publications, 2005.
3 Choose two additional books on Single Adults or Single Adult ministry from the recommended list. Alternatives may be requested. Submit request for approval by the professor before December 15, Fagerstrom, Douglas L. Baker Handbook of Single Adult Ministry. Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Books, Franck, Dennis. Reaching Single Adults: An Essential Guide for Ministry. Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Books, George, Bob. Complete in Christ: Discovering God's View of You. Eugene, OR: Harvest House, Pre-Seminar Requirements Please consult the website for conference registration information. Book Reviews. You will read the two required textbooks (Cavanaugh and Hoffeditz,) and prepare a three to four page Critical Review (double-spaced, typewritten, and in Turabian form) for each book. The review should include the following: (1) bibliographic data; (2) a statement of the author s purpose; (3) a brief synopsis of the message of each section or chapter; (4) a critical analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the book; (5) an evaluative assessment of the degree of success the author had in achieving the purpose, and (6) a discussion of potential application to the student s ministry context. Due: Jan 15, Talking Points. You will select two additional books from the recommended list (or approved alternative) and create a list of 10 annotated talking points from each book (with parenthetical citations). Talking points should include significant insights, key quotes, major themes, or disagreements. Include a brief paragraph explaining each point. Due Feb 1, 2016 Ministry Assessment. You will conduct an assessment of the ministry to single adults at the church you serve or attend. (Exceptions must be approved by the faculty instructor on or before November 23, 2016) An assessment tool and report guide will be made available by November 23, Report due: January 23, 2017 Seminar Requirements You are expected to attend the introduction meeting before the conference and all scheduled program events as well as all seminar sessions. Take thorough notes on all sessions attended in order to be able to type and organize them for future use. You must attend a presentation in each time slot and submit an evaluation of the presentation. An evaluation guide will be distributed at the conference.
4 Post-Seminar Requirements Conference Evaluation and Reflection Paper. Prepare and submit a 6 to 8 page Evaluation and Reflection Paper (double-spaced, typewritten, and in Turabian form) identifying strengths and weaknesses of the conference and suggestions for improvement. Identify key insights or issues raised in the conference. Reflect on how those insights or issues would have implications for your current ministry setting. Include any necessary proper citations and a bibliography. Due: March 2, 2017 Strategic Ministry Plan: Each student will prepare a strategic ministry plan for ministry to single adults in his/her church or ministry situation. Instructions will be provided during the on-campus portion of the seminar with regard to the scope and length of the report. It is anticipated that the paper will include data from the initial assessment and application of new information from the conference. A ministry planning guide will be provided at the conference. Due: March 12, 2017 Notes: Basic Turabian style (8 th edition) should be consulted when preparing any work for this seminar. The book review and papers are to be typed. Grammar will be considered in the grading of papers. Papers will be graded based on 70% content and 30% form, spelling and grammar. All assignments are expected to be submitted on time. Late assignments will incur a late penalty for the grade. Seminar Evaluation Critical Reviews 2@7.5pts 15% Book Talking Points 2@5 pts 10% Ministry Assessment 15% Conference Attendance 25% Reflection Paper 15% Ministry Plan 20% Seminar Schedule 100% Meet with Professor at Thursday 1:00pm (subject to change) for pre-event orientation and assignment collection. Location is (TBD) to be determined. Students should expect to participate in discussion regarding the conference theme and textbook readings.
