2 To Our Guests and Visitors Thank you for joining with us! We re glad you are here. * To find our nursery go to the Sunday School wing. The Nursery is to the right. * We have activity bags for youngsters to use during worship. The bags include soft toys and coloring books. Please help yourself to a bag. Be sure to return it after worship. * We practice open communion. If you are baptized and desire to share in the body and blood of our Lord, please join us. * We begin communing children in the 5 th grade. We offer a communion class to prepare 5 th graders to receive this sacrament. * If you would prefer grape juice instead of wine for communion, there is grape juice in the center of the tray of glasses. * Following services there is coffee and tea in the area just outside our sanctuary. 3 THE TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST October 9, 2016 ~ WELCOME! It is a pleasure to worship together. If you are a newcomer, if you have a prayer request, or both, please fill out the yellow pew card on the back of each pew. OUR BLENDED SERVICE Welcome to our Blended Worship Service. We have two services on Sunday mornings. At 9:00, we have a Traditional Lutheran Service, and at 11:00, we offer this Blended Service. This service is really under development. We are working to grow a second option for worship that will aid in our outreach here in Tyler. This is a growing and developing service. Come and help us shape this time in our Lord s presence! We have not loved those around us as we love ourselves. We feel that we have failed in our families and have broken relationships in every area of our lives. We want to be made new. We need to be a new creation fashioned in your image. Forgive our sin and create within us all that you intend us to be.

4 P: People of God, in Christ we are a new creation. In Christ our sin is forgiven and we are free to be the true people of God. The old has become new and what was dead is rising to eternal life. 5 FIRST LESSON: RUTH 1:1-19a 11 In the days when the judges ruled there was a famine in the land, and a man of Bethlehem in Judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he and his wife and his two sons. 2 The name of the man was Elimelech and the name of his wife Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion. They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem in Judah. They went into the country of Moab and remained there. 3 But Elimelech, the husband of Naomi, died, and she was left with her two sons. 4 These took Moabite wives; the name of the one was Orpah and the name of the other Ruth. They lived there about ten years, 5 and both Mahlon and Chilion died, so that the woman was left without her two sons and her husband. 6 Then she arose with her daughters-in-law to return from the country of Moab, for she had heard in the fields of Moab that the Lord had visited his people and given them food. 7 So she set out from the place where she was with her two daughters-in-law, and they went on the way to return to the land of Judah. 8 But Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, Go, return each of you to her mother s house. May the Lord deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead and with me. 9 The Lord grant that you may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband! Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their voices and wept. 10 And they said to her, No, we will return with you to your people. 11 But Naomi said, Turn back, my daughters; why will you go with me? Have I yet sons in my womb that they may become your husbands? 12 Turn back, my daughters; go your way, for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say I have hope, even if I should have a husband this night and should bear sons, 13 would you therefore wait till they were grown? Would you therefore refrain from marrying? No, my daughters, for it is exceedingly bitter to me for your sake that the hand of the Lord has gone out against me. 14 Then they lifted up their voices and wept again. And Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth clung to her. 15 And she said, See, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her gods; return after your sister-in-law. 16 But Ruth said, Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God. 17 Where you die I will die, and there will I be buried. May the Lord do so to me and more also if anything but death parts me from you. 18 And when Naomi saw that she was determined to go with her, she said no more. 19a So the two of them went on until they came to Bethlehem. And when they came to Bethlehem, the whole town was stirred because of them. R: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

6 PSALM 111 (TO BE READ RESPONSIVELY) 1 Hallelujah! I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart, in the assembly of the upright, in the congregation. 2 Great are the deeds of the Lord! they are studied by all who delight in them. 3 His work is full of majesty and splendor, and his righteousness endures forever. 4 He makes his marvelous works to be remembered; the Lord is gracious and full of compassion. 5 He gives food to those who fear him; he is ever mindful of his covenant. 6 He has shown his people the power of his works in giving them the lands of the nations. 7 The works of his hands are faithfulness and justice; all his commandments are sure. 8 They stand fast forever and ever, because they are done in truth and equity. 9 He sent redemption to his people; he commanded his covenant forever; holy and awesome is his Name. 10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; those who act accordingly have a good understanding; his praise endures forever. SECOND LESSON: II TIMOTHY 2: You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, 2 and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. 3 Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him. 5 An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. 6 It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops. 7 Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything. 8 Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel, 9 for which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal. But the word of God is not bound! 10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. 11 The saying is trustworthy, for: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; 12 if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us; 13 if we are faithless, he remains

Please sit SERMON ~ PASTOR MARK BRAATEN ~ GRATITUDE Please stand SONG OF THE DAY ~ IN CHRIST ALONE THE CONFESSION OF FAITH P: Let us confess our faith. C: I believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

8 THE PRAYERS A: As people redeemed by God and given new life by the risen Christ, let us pray in the power of the Holy Spirit. After each petition of the prayer, the leader will say Lord in your mercy The congregation will respond, hear our prayer. 9 P: It is right and fitting that at all times and in all places we should give thanks and praise to you, O Lord, holy Father, through Christ our Lord; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: C: Holy, Holy, Holy.. In the night in which He was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to His disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying; This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. THE LORD S PRAYER C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. 11 The 6th annual Christmas breakfast and tree farm excursion which the kids love so much is planned for Saturday December 10th 2016 at 9:00 a.m. So make sure you save the date and mark your calendar. We will have breakfast and a Christmas craft and then off to the tree farm to cut down our tree. Transportation to the tree farm will be in the church van. All helpers and volunteers would be appreciated! Memorial Service for Paul and Joan Sims The memorial service for Paul and Joan Sims will be this Saturday, October 15 at 10:30 a.m. Primetimers Primetimers will be meeting October 13, 2016 at noon at OSLC for a potluck luncheon of German food for an Octoberfest flare. For those wishing some idea of German food, examples might be spatzle, German potato salad, sauerkraut, soft pretzels, apple strudel, black forest cake, bratwurst, ham, German cabbage, German cucumber salad or anything else you may wish to bring. The program will be a local dance troupe called Raks Eclectica, meaning dance from many sources. They use musical sounds from Elvis and Norah Jones to the more rhythmic styles of calypso and Middle Eastern music. They perform dances telling the story of the Romani people. The troupe members make their own costumes, repurposing all kinds of things that they find in thrift stores. Mark your calendars and do please join the most caring Primetimers in the world for a most delicious luncheon and afternoon of great entertainment and wonderful Christian fellowship. There is no one who will intimidate you or nothing to obligate you, so give us a try and do bring friends.
