1 FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH The Chimes April 2018 Dates to remember: Rethink Church, Sunday, April 15 Pictorial Directory pictures, April Missions Fair, April Chimes deadline is Fri, April 20 Inside this issue: Pastoral Ponderings Prayer Concerns, Missions update Children s Ministry News Preschool News 4 Preschool Registration, News from Josh Rethink Church & the Mission Fair Easter Schedule, Pictorial Directory PASTORAL PONDERINGS by Pastor Brian It is hard to believe, but by the time you receive this issue of The Chimes, we will have most likely already made it through Holy Week and Easter Sunday, celebrating together the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! With Easter falling on April 1 st, the entire Lenten season came and passed by so quickly that it may have been lost on some that the most blessed Sunday of the entire Christian year fell on what has become known as April Fool s Day! However, I believe while some may have found this fact odd or strange, if we dig a little deeper we will understand that the awesome message of Jesus birth, life, death, and burial, all culminating in His bodily resurrection, proving once and for always that Jesus IS Lord of All and satan is the biggest fool of all! Since none of us want to be categorized as fools, I am asking each one of us to focus our hearts, spirits and minds on the results of Jesus Passion and Glorious Resurrection, which is Christ s victory over death and hell and the new life that is ours in Him! With this in mind, I thought it appropriate to share one of the most inspiring Easter messages of all time. It is a short sermon, but it is long in meaning and impact. May you be encouraged and may your faith be strengthened as you receive the truth of this Word into your spirit! God s Blessings to All for Easter and Always! PB The Easter Sermon of John Chrysostom ( ) Are there any who are devout lovers of God? Let them enjoy this beautiful bright festival! Are there any who are grateful servants? Let them rejoice and enter into the joy of their Lord! Are there any weary from fasting? Let them now receive their due! If any have toiled from the first hour, let them receive their reward. If any have come after the third hour, let them with gratitude join in the feast! Those who arrived after the sixth hour, let them not doubt; for they shall not be short-changed. Those who have tarried until the ninth hour, let them not hesitate; but let them come too. And those who arrived only at the eleventh hour, let them not be afraid by reason of their delay. For the Lord is gracious and receives the last even as the first. The Lord gives rest to those who come at the eleventh hour, even as to those who toiled from the beginning. To one and all the Lord gives generously. The Lord accepts the offering of every work. The Lord honors every deed and commends their intention. Let us all enter into the joy of the Lord! First and last alike, receive your reward. Rich and poor, rejoice together! Conscientious and lazy, celebrate the day! You who have kept the fast, and you who have not, rejoice, this day, for the table is bountifully spread! Feast royally, for the calf is fatted. Let no one go away hungry. Partake, all, of the banquet of faith. Enjoy the bounty of the Lord's goodness! Let no one grieve being poor, for the universal reign has been revealed. Let no one lament persistent failings, for forgiveness has risen from the grave. Let no one fear death, for the death of our Saviour has set us free! The Lord has destroyed death by enduring it! The Lord vanquished hell w hen he descended into it. The Lord put hell in turmoil even as it tasted of his flesh. Isaiah foretold this when he said, "You, O Hell, were placed in turmoil when he encountered you below." Hell was in turmoil having been eclipsed. Hell was in turmoil having been mocked. Hell was in turmoil having been destroyed. Hell was in turmoil having been abolished. Hell was in turmoil having been made captive. Hell grasped a corpse, and met God! Hell seized earth, and encountered heaven. Hell took what it saw, and was overcome by what it could not see. O death, where is your sting? O hell, where is your victory? Christ is risen, and you are cast dow n! Christ is risen, and the demons are fallen! Christ is risen, and the angels rejoice! Christ is risen, and life is set free! Christ is risen, and the tomb is emptied of its dead. For Christ, having risen from the dead, is become the first-fruits of those who have fallen asleep. To Christ be glory and power forever and ever. Amen! South Carolina 8

Matthew 6: 7 (NIV) states, And when you pray, do not keep babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. It can make a person a little nervous about how they pray, as though they will be judged as insincere if they use too many words or pray too long. Does it mean we have to be careful in prayer instead of just pouring out our heart to God? Repeating the same words over and over is no way to ensure that God will hear your prayer. It s not wrong to come to God many times with the same requests Jesus encourages persistent prayer. Jesus is not suggesting here that all repetitious or lengthy prayer is meaningless. And, I think if you re pouring your heart out to God, you are genuinely in relationship with Him. We don t impress God with our fancy, impressive words; we talk to Him from our honest hearts. Jesus is describing a type of prayer that was being used more like a chant or incantation, using the same wordy phrases over and over until they had lost their meaning. And it is also good to remember that the God to whom we pray is a God of love who listens, who doesn t need to be coaxed repetitiously into answering us. Pray with an open heart - we can never pray too much if our prayers are honest and sincere. And while we are speaking of prayer, please remember each week to read and pray over the names and issues in the bulletin under the title, Prayer Makes A Difference! I pray for a wonderful Easter Sunday for all our Church families and friends.

Questions, contact Rachel at rcampbell@cvfumc.org or NEWS FROM JOSH In God s Kingdom, prayer is not only a means of communication with our Father, but it is a highway in which He births things into our reality. Take Daniel when his answer to prayer was so delayed by heavenly war that God dispatched an Archangel to unblock the way. We always focus on the Archangel, but miss when the messenger says to Daniel: Fear not, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart to understand and humbled yourself before your God, your words have been heard, and I have come because of your words. (Daniel 10:12, ESV) Remember Jesus when He was baptized? It says that they saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove. (Mark 1:10, ESV) In Jesus obedience, which He knew from His prayer times with the Father, God tore open the heavens to pour out His blessing and favor on Jesus. I say all of this to share with you that our students are doing the same thing. Four young men have set themselves in agreement to begin prayer movements on each of our three High School Campuses. They are asking God to stir up His Spirit and tear open the heavens so that revival will break forth in our High Schools. Friends, I invite you to join them in prayer as they seek God for revival in our campuses. May our Father find favor, tear open the heavens, and pour out His Spirit. May their prayers create a pathway from the Throne of God to our local High Schools.
