1 The Newsletter of St. John Lutheran Church April/May 2017 The Revelations of St. John Easter is Sunday, April 16. You and your loved ones are welcome to join us this Holy Week and Easter Season. St. John has a full schedule of services (displayed to the right) for our members, friends and families to attend. The Easter Story will be shared throughout Holy Week. We will gather to remember the Lord s Supper on Thursday, we will remember the trials and sufferings our Lord endured on Good Friday, and on Saturday, we will start our Easter Celebration with the Vigil. What is the Vigil? From the Living Lutheran Magazine: The Easter Vigil is the pinnacle of the church year. Held between sunset on Holy Saturday and sunrise on Easter morning, it is the first celebration of Easter (traditionally holy days are considered to begin at sunset). The Easter Vigil begins outside of the church building where a new paschal candle is blessed. Worshipers are reminded of the connection between the Passover of ancient Israel and the new Passover, which is Christ s victory over sin and death. The alleluia is used for the first time since the beginning of Lent. Our readings all reflect the acts of salvation, told in the Old Testament. The Vigil of Easter remind us of our history while looking forward to our glorious future, provided by Christ s Resurrection. On Easter Sunday, we will gather to celebrate the news of the empty tomb! Join us as we once again sing, Alleluia! 2 Council Corner A Report from our Council President Dear St. John Family, Happy Spring! As this is the season of new beginnings, I'm writing to let everyone know of some new beginnings in our congregation's council. I'd like to thank the council for putting their trust and confidence in me to serve as your new President of Council. I am honored and humbled to continue working with the great people on council to make St. John the best it can be. It has been my privilege to serve with past president Monika Bontempo for the past few years as Vice President. Filling her shoes won't be easy, but I know I can rely on Monika's steady hand and faithful devotion to St. John to help me along the way. Additionally, we are blessed with many generous, hard working council members, committee leaders and, of course, Pastor Sarah and our members who give of their time and talents to all work together to ensure St. John s continued service to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Rounding out the Executive Committee are Phil VandeBerg, Vice President; Jack Ruse, Treasurer; Monika Bontempo, Secretary; and Pastor Sarah Stobie. We also give thanks to Jon Ganser who filled in for Jack while he was on vacation these past few months promises to be full of both opportunities and challenges for St. John and all churches in our rapidly changing environment. I ask that you keep the council in your prayers as we work to be good stewards of the gifts our church has been given. With God's help, we will make good decisions and continue to grow in our faith. Spring is here...amen. 3 A Note from Pastor Sarah Greetings! Holy week is almost upon us, and I am starting to make lists of what needs to be done, and what can wait until after Easter. This includes tasks for the church, tasks for myself, and tasks for the home (spring cleaning will wait!). Easter is the highlight of our faith. We are Christians not because of Christ s birth (Christmas) but because Christ is Risen! We are Christians because we believe in the empty tomb, we believe that Christ rose from the dead, and we believe that through him, we will have eternal life. Soon, we will be able to say, Alleluia! He is risen indeed. Each Easter, I wonder about the story and who would I be... The disciples who could not stay at the foot of the cross? The disciples who fled? Would I be one of the women, anxious to get to the tomb that early morning? Would I be Peter who doubted their words? Would I be the soldier who discovered truth at the very end? Would I trust the words of others who said that my Lord was no longer there? Each year, my answer changes. And I take some solace from that. Faith should not be stagnant, or predictable, or the same from year to year. Each Easter, I encounter new thoughts on the Resurrection. Each year, I am grateful to God for different reasons. Each year, I discover some new phrase in verses of hymns I have sung all of my life. The Easter story is the same, and yet if we allow it it means something different every time. Last year was my first Holy Week at St. John. We had such beautiful services carefully planned by many hands and hearts, with music that nurtured the soul with meaningful songs. I felt so blessed to be here as your new pastor, and I felt a sense of renewal and rebirth as a person of faith. Last year, I was a woman finding an empty tomb, but given a new reason to live in joy! This year, I look forward to our Holy Week gatherings. I know what to expect, and yet I am expecting the unexpected. I know the tomb is empty, but what will that mean for me this year? What will it mean for you? Are you open to hearing the Easter story again, beginning Thursday and ending on Sunday? Are you willing to listen to words you have heard, but that can bring new life to you today? Are you willing to be changed this Easter time? Take a few moments today to schedule in our services during Holy Week on your calendars. And then, read through this extended version of our newsletter. A lot is happening at St. John where you aware? Find your place here at St. John in its story attend a new event, volunteer, invite friends and neighbors to join you. Our banner image on the front page is our image for our mass mailing to the Blue Bell area this Easter. If you receive it, pass on this newsletter to one of your neighbors. We welcome everyone to join us this Easter season, and we especially welcome the stranger to join us and our story. May God bless you, your loves ones, and your Easter gatherings. Thank you for blessing me and my family with your prayers and support. Jesus Christ Is Risen! Alleluia! Pastor Sarah Would you like to join our church family? Pastor Sarah will be having a new members gathering on Tuesday, April 25 at 6:30 p.m. Please RSVP to Pastor soon. Page 3 St. John Lutheran Church

4 Children and Youth News Sunday School News The Sunday School kids have been focused on prayer and praying during Lent. It s been both a fun and learning time this Lent! Reminder that there will be no Sunday School on Palm Sunday or Easter. Enjoy the special mornings and join us in worship! 6 Connecting with Others Our Connecting with Others opportunities are ways for our adult members to meet and get to know one another better in a less formal setting. Some offerings are age-specific and some offerings are centered around hobbies. It is all about connecting with new people and also re-connecting with old friends. Welcome to Pub Theology, a new movement in the Lutheran Church for our young adults, ages 25-45ish. Martin Luther gathered frequently with the young adults of his time over beer to discuss faith, theology and life in a relaxed setting. We honor this old tradition by gathering monthly in a local pub on the second Tuesday of every month. Join us Tuesday, April 11, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at MaGerks in Fort Washington. What do we do? We talk we get to know one another better while talking about faith and belief in real ways. Some nights we discuss faith in movies, other nights we share our favorite books. 7 Connecting with Others Yarn Crafters has changed, just a bit! We will now meet two times a month, the 2nd Thursday mornings at 10:30 a.m. as well as the 3rd Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. for those who work during the day. Yarn Crafters is a group of knitters and crocheters. Our group came together last month and we decided on a mission-based focus. We will complete service projects that benefit local charities and our own congregation--baby blankets, baby hats, baptism blankets, prayer shawls, and more. But, we also are committed to teaching beginners the basics, and will always welcome a new person into our group. For our gatherings in April, we will pass out patterns for the above projects, and materials if needed. If you are working on a personal project, please bring it to "show and tell." Also, we are happy when people bring treats--let Pastor know if you are able to bring something to share. All are welcome to come! All skill levels are welcome, too. Our Evangelism Committee is organizing a Book Swap in time for summer reading. We will have our book swap, open to the public!, on Saturday, May 20 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. How does a Book Swap work? People come and bring books to literally swap with others. Please do not bring bags of books, unless you will also be taking bags of books! Questions? Please speak with Katie Myers. Our Spring Flower Arranging Classes have been scheduled. We will have a class on Monday, April 3 at 7:30 p.m. Please note: RSVPS were due by Thursday, March 30. Our next offering is Tuesday, May 2 at 7:30 p.m. Our instructor, Bongchun Koch, will guide us in making a beautiful wreath. Please RSVP now for the May class. 8 Connecting with Others, continued... St. John has our own Visual Arts Program! The Spring session of art classes is scheduled to start the first week in April. And just in time for spring, the session is going to focus on how to paint flowers. Lessons will be taught on Chinese brush painting, how to choose colors that enable you to show the transparency of petals, techniques that encourage freedom and enable a more abstract version of life, and what makes good composition. There will also be lectures on various artists and how they handle the subject of flowers, as well as still life setups designed to inspire. Students have the choice of four different time slots on three different days. So why not embrace your creative side and learn how to paint a bit of spring in the process? Ann s teaching style is based on one phrase: Yes, YOU can! Anyone who is interested may contact Ann L. Brennan at annlb609@gmail.com for more information. Ann L. Brennan, Visual Arts Program Coordinator Classes are 10 weeks long and cost $80. Classes are available the following dates and times. Wednesday Evenings 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday Mornings 10:30-12:30 p.m. Thursday Evenings 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday Mornings 10:30-12:30 p.m. Classes are run like a one room schoolhouse. All skill levels are welcome. All mediums are welcome oils, acrylics, watercolor, pencil and pastel. You are warmly invited to tour The Rosenbach Museum and Library (RML) on Sunday, April 30 at 2:30 p.m. This beautifully restored townhouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. During the first half of the twentieth century, the founders of the RML, Dr. ASW Rosenbach and his brother, Philip, were renowned dealers in rare books, manuscripts, furniture, fine and decorative arts. Over time, they helped to amass private collections and to establish libraries that became our nation s most important resources. What will you see? In short, the brothers own personal collection---treasures with which they just could not part! Highlights include important pieces of English and American silver and furniture, paintings from respected American artists, sculpture from ancient Greece and Egypt, and selections from an extensive collection of portrait miniatures. In the libraries, you ll get a glimpse of rare books in English and American literature, as well as manuscripts from our Founding Fathers and luminaries of the Civil War. A special post-brother collection is also included on the tour: the literary papers, library, and furnished living room of Modernist American poet, Marianne Moor. It is the most complete collection representing any poet from that important movement in the evolution of American arts. Where is the RML? The Rosenbach is located at Delancey Place in the heart of the historic Rittenhouse Square neighborhood of Center City, Philadelphia. Delancey Place is between Pine and Spruce streets. How will I get there? Parking is occasionally available on this street and near-by streets. There are also parking garages within a few blocks. Carpooling from the Church will be an option. Public transportation is available (via Septa Regional Rail to Suburban Station at 16 th and Market), and AMTRAK to 30 th St. Station, 30 th and Market Streets.) Limited handicapped parking at the rear of the House itself is available with prior arrangement. Will I be able to navigate through the RML? The Rosenbach is accessible to persons with disabilities. An elevator is available, and folding chairs can be provided in each of the rooms on the tour. The tour will last approximately 90 minutes. What is the cost? Since you are the guests of a regular RML docent, there is no fee for the tour. Your commitment will be important in planning the visit; this should be made to Kathy Erdman by Sunday, April 23 rd. Questions may be forwarded to Kathy Erdman at erdmankath@gmail.com, or your RML docent, Barbara Speece at barbaraspeece@yahoo.com. Page 8 St. John Lutheran Church

Stephanie Sylvester, Coordinator, Volunteer Dept. Dear St. John Lutheran Church, Thank you for your generous gift of $2,000 to support the ministry of Stephen Deal. ELCA Global Church Sponsorship sends more than 150 missionaries to more than 45 countries around the world. Your gift shows your commitment to walking in newness alongside our brothers and sisters in Christ around the world. Andrew G. Steele, Director Dear Pastor Stobie and friends, Your gift of $ has been gratefully and wonderfully received! You are a vital part of God s plan to transform the lives of those fleeing danger. I am deeply grateful for your commitment to displaced families as we continue to stand together with our hands outstretched in welcome. Sara Kenney, Annual Giving Manager, Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service Dear Pastor Stobie, I appreciate the wonderful opportunity you and the St. John property committee provided me while fulfilling my Eagle Scout project. It was an amazing experience to manage all of the volunteers to create the walkway, patio and bench. Every Friday when I come to Scouts, I am filled with great memories and pride. Yours in Scouting, Andrew Piszek Dear St. John Lutheran Church, Thank you for your gift of $ to support ELCA Good Gifts. Your gift helps us care for our neighbors here at home and around the world by providing basic necessities, tools for education, and much more. Thank you for responding to God s call to walk with our brothers and sisters in Christ s name. Christina Jackson-Skelton, Executive Director, Mission Advancement Easter Candy Sale was another success. $3200 worth of candy sold yielding St John $1600 toward special items. Thank you, everyone, for your help. GREAT CONGREGATION!!!!! Betty Jeanguenin, Coordinator Synod News The Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod expression of the ELCA cares for the health and vitality of Christ s Church in Philadelphia and Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties. Our Synod website is ministrylink.org This May, St. John will be represented by our delegates to the Synod Assembly. Our delegates are Ed Lorenski and Carol Weidler. Also representing St. John, our quilters will be donating quilts for Lutheran World Relief (LWR). We also will be hosting our Synod Council on Thursday, April 6 at St. John. Pastor Sarah will be coordinating a meal for the Synod Council members. The Synod Campaign to create an endowment to fund special programs and initiatives continues. St. John has agreed to pass out special Synod Campaign Envelopes four times a year for the Campaign. Our next envelope will be passed out Easter Sunday. 10 Ways to Serve Altar Flowers are a wonderful way to remember a special person or date. Please sign up to sponsor our altar flowers (or bulletins) by using the pink clipboard, located on the Information Table in the Great Room, or by contacting the Church Office. Thank you! We are committed to collecting items for the Seminary Student Food Bank at LTSP. The cost of attending seminary can mean a choice between food and bills and this is for our future clergy members! Please donate canned goods, ready-to-make meals, and other items that are nonperishable. We also need drivers to deliver the food once a month. Donated items may be dropped off any time and left in the front closet by the main entrance. Thank you! We have members and guests of the congregation who would like to worship with us on Sundays, but do not have rides. They are elderly and unable to drive themselves; we also have one regular who no longer has a working car. Two members live in Blue Bell, one lives in Norristown. If you are able, please contact Pastor Sarah soon, and she will discuss more details with you. This could be a monthly or quarterly commitment but something is better than nothing for our homebound members. Thank you. Our Property Committee has planned a St. John Service Day for Saturday, May 6 from 9:30 to noon. Just like our houses, the church needs some spring cleaning outside on the property, but also inside for the summer. We will have specific tasks to assign for those who come to help. All skill levels welcome. Please bring rakes if you can. Come prepared to work and get a little dirty! Please sign up by calling the Church Office or by using our Sign Up Genius. It takes a large group of people to make Sundays special for all we have choir members, we have Sunday School teachers, we have counters (that is the group which counts our offerings after worship), and we have worship assistants, just to name a few! Worship assistants are people who volunteer to serve at our services ushers, communion assistants, and assisting ministers. It can be stressful on Pastor to not know who will be assisting in worship until Sunday morning. At this time, the most efficient way to keep track of our helpers is to use an online sign up which you can access through our website or by calling the Church Office and requesting assistance. And at this time, very few spots are filled for April, especially Holy Week. Pastor Sarah asks that you prayerfully consider volunteering as you are able. Please don t wait if you know you are available. Thank you. Page 10 St. John Lutheran Church

Some of our members have already given their Challenge for the year; others, they have increased their offerings for the year to meet it.
