Sunday Bulletin Hymn 8am TiS 256 From heaven you came 10am MP 25 All to Jesus I Surrender Sentence from Scripture There is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for Jesus sake, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life. Mark Prayer of the Day Merciful God, in your Son you call not the righteous but sinners to repentance: draw us away from the easy road that leads to destruction, and guide us into paths that lead to life abundant, that in seeking your truth, and obeying your will, we may know the joy of being a disciple of Jesus our Saviour; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. 2 Hon. Priest: Rev d Nikolai Blaskow nikolai@nikolaiblaskow.com Hon. Deacon: Rev d Brian Norris BrianN@gippsanglican.org.au Associate Priest/Hospital Chaplain: Rev d Heather Toms Cathedral Organist: Anthony Hahn Prayer for St Paul s Come Holy Spirit breathe through us: Enable us to know and make known the connection between You and the everyday. Help us to be relevant and approachable to the community, to engage inclusively with them and each other, and to stay connected with you. Enable us to show Christ s unconditional love in action. This we ask in Jesus name, Amen. A Reading from The Book of Job Then Job answered: Today also my complaint is bitter; his hand is heavy despite my groaning. O that I knew where I might find him, that I might come even to his dwelling! I would lay my case before him, and fill my mouth with arguments. I would learn what he would answer me, and understand what he would say to me. Would he contend with me in the greatness of his power? No; but he would give heed to me. There an upright person could reason with him, and I should be acquitted for ever by my judge. If I go forward, he is not there; or backward, I cannot perceive him; on the left he hides, and I cannot behold him; I turn to the right, but I cannot see him. God has made my heart faint; the Almighty has terrified me; If only I could vanish in darkness, and thick darkness would cover my face! Job , Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 2

3 Psalm My God, my God, why have you forsaken me: why are you so far from helping me and from the words of my groaning? My God, I cry to you by day, but you do not answer: and by night also I take no rest. But you continue holy: you that are the praise of Israel. In you our forebears trusted: they trusted, and you delivered them; To you they cried and they were saved: they put their trust in you and were not confounded. But as for me, I am a worm and no man: the scorn of all and despised by the people. Those that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out their lips at me and wag their heads, saying, He trusted in the Lord let him deliver him: let him deliver him, if he delights in him. But you are he that took me out of the womb: that brought me to lie at peace on my mother s breast. On you have I been cast since my birth: you are my God, even from my mother s womb. O go not from me, for trouble is hard at hand: and there is none to help. Many oxen surround me: fat bulls of Bashan close me in on every side. They gape wide their mouths at me: like lions that roar and rend. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart within my breast is like melting wax. My mouth is dried up like a potsherd: and my tongue clings to my gums. A Reading from The Letter to the Hebrews Indeed, the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And before him no creature is hidden, but all are naked and laid bare to the eyes of the one to whom we must render an account. Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the 3

4 heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gospel Hymn 8am TiS 315 Mine eyes have seen the glory 10am TiS 745 Seek Ye First the Kingdom of God The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ. As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? Jesus said to him, Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not defraud; Honour your father and mother. He said to him, Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth. Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me. When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions. Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! And the disciples were perplexed at these words. But Jesus said to them again, Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God. They were greatly astounded and said to one another, Then who can be saved? Jesus looked at them and said, For mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible. Peter began to say to him, Look, we have left everything and followed you. Jesus said, Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields, with persecutions and in the age to come eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first. Mark For the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ Offertory Hymn 8am TiS 213 (ii) Father whose everlasting love 10am TiS 106 (i) Now Thank We All Our God Final Hymn 10am Go in Grace and Make Disciples (Tune TiS 153) 4

Cathedral Prayer Chain Requests Please contact Naomi McDonald Kerrie Smith The prayer chain is for anyone in need of prayer From the Dean What a wonderful weekend it was last week, so much joy and delight! After much preparation the men of the parish, and some women, prepared the space for the Giant Garage Sale, and what an event that was! So much camaraderie, so much friendly chatter, excited purchasers, children enjoying jars of surprises and lucky dips and jumping delightedly, people discovering tools they needed and plants that were just right, so much Stuff, and clothes, people of all ages eating delicious sausages, or Devonshire teas! During that time too, a number of hungry people came to receive food. Then, all the clearing up which took several days. Thanks so much everyone! On Sunday we blessed animals: dogs, cats, stick insects, cows.. All who attended the 10am service were so well behaved, a great blessing to us all. Then Sunday evening was our monthly Prayer for Healing Service. There was deep prayer and solidarity. Healing is happening. People from the cathedral and from the wider community mixed and supported each other over the weekend. What a treat! As we move towards our AGM, I begin reflecting on our past year, and notice a small trickle of new faces exploring life in the Parish of Sale, many of them angels, messengers of encouragement to some tired faithful parishioners. There is a growing trust and renewal. There are also regulars who are retiring from their roles to give others the opportunity to step up. That is good to see. As I have said in the past, we need to continually evaluate what is life-giving for us, to listen to what God is calling us to in our lives right now. Some of you may consider standing for chapter, the management committee of our parish this time. Some may like to participate in other cathedral activities like messy church, or Sunday Club, or mens breakfast. Some may just need to rest. Let me know what attracts you. Our daily evening prayer, and our meditation groups bring a together small number of prayerful people, from within and beyond the parish, to pray for our community, and to nourish their relationship with God. All are welcome to drop in any time. 5

6 This afternoon we have the first of our training for Pastoral Carers. All are welcome to join us, if visiting and supporting those isolated or unwell is your calling. Today we celebrate Robyn and Stan Bruhn s fiftieth Wedding Anniversary! Congratulations Stan and Robyn!! All welcome to stay for a light lunch. Life here at the Cathedral Parish of Sale is full and rich. We are blessed. On Clergy Retreat this week, I was reminded of the joy of Eucharist and gathering around the table each week, with or without animals, to be fed. Such a primal thing, gathering around a table for a meal. We come bringing all of who we are, our joys and our sorrows, and are met by Christ our host, who welcomes us with open arms, and invites us in. God bless you all, Love, Susanna News and Events St Paul s AGM is on 25 th November, please start writing your AGM reports and them to Christine by 2 nd November. If you are interested in becoming part of Chapter, please feel free to ask! St Paul s Men s Breakfast Group thank everyone who contributed to last Saturdays Garage Sale. There are too many people to thank individually, so if you donated items, or were involved in the setting and packing up, selling on the day or in any other way, thank you again. The day was not only a success financially, it also provided an opportunity to showcase the life of St Paul s to those who attended. The total made, minus expenses and including pre and post sales so far is $4050. More to come! This includes: Donations $50, Long table (small items) $887, large Items $608, Toys $35 + $74 Tools $635, BB $304, Jumping Castle $52 and thanks to Marjo Jumping Castles for donating this!
