Followers of Jesus, with open minds and hearts to serve October 14, 2018 Good Samaritan Episcopal Church is a growing community of open-minded Christians who seek to do what Jesus taught us: to include, love, and serve all people without exception. We are a new church without walls, and we meet in places where we can serve and be with our neighbors. We seek to build a diverse fellowship, and we welcome all who want to ask deep questions and put faith into action churchthatserves.org Good Samaritan Staff Contact Information The Right Rev. 2 Welcome! We re so glad you re here. You ll find our order for worship in the pages that follow. On the back page, there s more information about upcoming Good Samaritan events and today s activities, as well as a Get Connected form if you d like to let us know more about you. We promise to follow up only in the ways you request! Announcements Nanci Slagle Opening Hymn: Christ Is The World s True Light (standing, as you are able). 1
Opening Acclamation (standing, as you are able) Presider Blessed be the One, Holy, Living God. People Glory to God for ever and ever. Presider Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires are known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your Holy Name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. Song of Praise: Freedom Bound (standing, as you are able) June Jordan The Prayer (Collect) of the Day Presider God be with you. People And also with you. Presider Lord, we pray that your grace may always precede and follow us, that we may continually be given to good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. A Reading from Holy Scripture : Job 23:1-9, The congregation is seated. J ob said: "Today also my complaint is bitter; his hand is heavy despite my groaning. Oh, that I knew where I might find him, that I might come even to his dwelling! I would lay my case before him, and fill my mouth with arguments. I would learn what he would answer me, and understand what he would say to me. Would he contend with me in the greatness of his power? No; but he would give heed to me. There an upright person could reason with him, and I should be acquitted forever by my judge. If I go forward, he is not there; or backward, I cannot perceive him; on the left he hides, and I cannot behold him; I turn to the right, but I cannot see him. God has made my heart faint; the Almighty has terrified me; If only I could vanish in darkness, and thick darkness would cover my face!". Reader People Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. Thanks be to God. 2
The Alleluia (standing, as you are able) The Holy Gospel: Mark 10:17-31 (standing, as you are able) Deacon People The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ, according to Mark. Glory to you, Jesus Christ. As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? Jesus said to him, Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not defraud; Honor your father and mother. He said to him, Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth. Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me. When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions. 3
Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! And the disciples were perplexed at these words. But Jesus said to them again, Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God. They were greatly astounded and said to one another, Then who can be saved? Jesus looked at them and said, For mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible. Peter began to say to him, Look, we have left everything and followed you. Jesus said, Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields with persecutions and in the age to come eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first. Deacon People The Gospel of our Lord. Praise to you, Jesus Christ. The Alleluia (repeated) Sermon The Rev. Patrick Burke The Affirmation of Faith (from the New Zealand Book of Common Prayer) You, O God, are supreme and holy. You create our world and give us life. Your purpose overarches everything we do. You have always been with us. You are God. You, O God, are infinitely generous, good beyond all measure. You came to us before we came to you. You have revealed and proved your love for us in Jesus Christ, who lived and died and rose again. You are with us now. You are God. You, O God, are Holy Spirit You empower us to be your gospel in the world. You reconcile and heal; you overcome death. You are our God. We worship you. The Prayers of the People: Form II (read responsively between the Litanist and the People) Litanist Litanist Litanist I ask your prayers for God's people throughout the world; for our Bishop Jennifer and our Companion Bishop Mauricio in Brasilia; for this gathering; and for all ministers and people. Pray for the Church. ( Silence) I ask your prayers for peace; for goodwill among nations; and for the well-being of all people. Pray for justice and peace. ( Silence) I ask your prayers for the poor, the sick, the hungry, the oppressed, and those in prison. Pray for those in any need or trouble. ( Silence) 4
Litanist Litanist I ask your prayers for all who seek God, or a deeper knowledge of God. Pray that they may find and be found by God. ( Silence) I ask your prayers for the departed. Pray for those who have died. ( Silence) Litanist I ask your prayers for. (The People name aloud or in the silence of our hearts those for whom we pray.) I ask your thanksgivings for hearts those for whom we pray.) ( Silence). (The People name aloud or in the silence of our Litanist Praise God for those in every generation in whom Christ has been honored. Pray that we may have grace to glorify Christ in our own day. ( Silence) The Presider concludes with a Prayer. The Peace Presider People The peace of God be always with you. And also with you. The Holy Communion The Offertory : I Have Decided To Follow Jesus I have decided to follow Jesus; I have decided to follow Jesus; I have decided to follow Jesus; no turning back, no turning back. Though none go with me, I still will follow; though none go with me, I still will follow; Anonymous though none go with me, I still will follow; no turning back, no turning back. The world behind me, the cross before me; the world behind me, the cross before me; the world behind me, the cross before me; no turning back, no turning back. The people s offerings are collected to support the ongoing work and ministry of our community. If you wish to make a gift by text, simply send the dollar amount you wish to give to with the keyword GoodSams, followed by a space, and then a dollar amount. For example, Good Sams 15 The Eucharistic Prayer (standing, as you are able) Enriching Our Worship Prayer 1 Presider God be with you. People And also with you. Presider Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Presider Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give God thanks and praise. The Presider continues All thanks and praise are yours at all times and in all places, our true and loving God; through Jesus Christ, your eternal Word, the Wisdom from on high by whom you created all things. You laid the foundations of the world and enclosed the sea; You brought forth all creatures of the earth and gave breath to humankind. 5
Wondrous are you, Holy One of Blessing, all you create is a sign of hope for our journey; And so as the morning stars sing your praises we join the heavenly beings and all creation as we sing with joy: The Presider continues Glory and honor are yours, Creator of all, your Word has never been silent; you called a people to yourself, as a light to the nations, you delivered them from bondage and led them to a land of promise. Of your grace, you gave Jesus to be human, to share our life, to proclaim the coming of your holy reign and give himself for us, a fragrant offering. Through Jesus Christ our Redeemer, you have freed us from sin, brought us into your life, reconciled us to you, and restored us to the glory you intend for us. We thank you that on the night before he died for us Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, gave it to his friends and said: Take, eat, this is my Body, broken for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper Jesus took the cup of wine, said the blessing, gave it to his friends and said: Drink this, all of you: this cup is the new Covenant in my Blood, poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. And so, remembering all that was done for us: the cross, the tomb, the resurrection and ascension, longing for Christ s coming in glory, and presenting to you these gifts your earth has formed and human hands have made, we acclaim you, O Christ: Presider and People Dying, you destroyed our death. Rising, you restored our life. Christ Jesus, come in glory! 6
The Presider continues Send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts of bread and wine that they may be to us the Body and Blood of your Christ. Grant that we, burning with your Spirit s power, may be a people of hope, justice and love. Giver of Life, draw us together in the Body of Christ, and in the fullness of time gather us with all your people into the joy of our true eternal home. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, we worship you our God and Creator in voices of unending praise. Presider and People Blessed are you now and forever. AMEN. The Lord s Prayer Presider And now, as Our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread Presider People Alleluia. The disciples knew the Lord Jesus in the breaking of the bread. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. Alleluia. All who are followers of Christ, regardless of your church background (or not!), are warmly welcome to receive the gifts of bread and wine in Holy Communion. Come forward and the priest will place a piece of bread into your palm. Gluten-free bread is available; simply ask the minister. As the cup of wine passes, you may either dip the bread into the wine, or drink from the cup. If you do not wish to receive bread and wine, we welcome you to come forward anyway and to cross your arms over your chest. The priest will say a prayer for God s blessing upon you. Anthem During Communion: It Is Well With My Soul When peace like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say It is well, it is well, with my soul It is well With my soul It is well, it is well with my soul Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come, Let this blest assurance control, That Christ has regarded my helpless estate, And hath shed His own blood for my soul It is well (it is well) With my soul (with my soul) It is well, it is well with my soul My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought My sin, not in part but the whole, Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more, Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, o my soul. 7
Hymn After Communion: Seek Ye First Postcommunion Prayer (said by all) God of abundance, you have fed us with the bread of life and cup of salvation; you have united us with Christ and one another; and you have made us one with all your people in heaven and on earth. Now send us forth in the power of your Spirit, that we may proclaim your redeeming love to the world and continue for ever in the risen life of Christ our Savior. Amen. The Blessing of the People Presider May Christ the Son of God be manifest in you, that your lives may be a light to the world. And may the blessing of God Almighty, the Source of All Being, Eternal Word, and Holy Spirit, be with you now, and remain with you always. Amen. 8

Good Samaritan News Please visit the online calendar on churchthatserves.org for the latest! Welcome, The Rev. Canon Cathy Gray! We welcome Cathy as our guest celebrant today. Father Gray is away visiting his Godchildren in Annapolis, Maryland today and will be on a spiritual retreat this week at Gethsemane Monastery in Kentucky. Episcopal clergy are expected to make an annual retreat for prayer and reflection. He ll be back next Sunday, October 21. Today, after worship: We invite adults to Dwelling in the Word, which i s a spiritual practice of reading and dwelling in the biblical text with an openness to be formed and transformed by the Living Word. This practice is a unique way of allowing God to speak to us both individually and as a group. Dwelling in the Word values listening deeply to God and to one another. We ll meet in the cafeteria at 11:15 a.m. Good Sam s Kids will be watching Coco in preparation for our Dia De Los Muertos (see below), and Good Sam s Youth will meet in the library. Dia De Los Muertos (The Day of All Souls) is coming to Good Sam s on Sunday, October 28. We re commemorating this Mexican Christian holy day a way of celebrating diversity in our community and in remembrance of all those we love but see no longer. We ll have the Coro Hispano from Christ Church Cathedral as our special guests (you don t want to miss them!), and our service will be bilingual in English and Spanish. Here s how we hope you ll participate: plan on bringing a framed photo of your loved ones who have passed on, and bring a plate of their favorite food or goodie to share with others. We will create a giant shared altar of remembrance for our predecessors, and afterwards, eat the foods in their honor. Youth night out at the movies: On Friday, October 19th, Good Sam s Youth Group will be going out to see the acclaimed, The Hate U Give movie based on the bestselling book by the same name. It is a look at what happens when a teenage girl witnesses her best friend s killing by law enforcement and how she navigates pressures in her world, whilst finding her voice to stand up for what s right. Screening will be at Regal Shiloh Crossing Stadium 18, Avon at 7:15pm. Contact Erina Ludwig on erina@churchthatserves.org, if you re interested in going. A Thanksgiving R & R night: Join Deb and Kevin Samples, at their home in Brownsburg, for a little R&R on Friday, November 2, 7-10 p.m. Expect Thanksgiving nibbles with a twist, great conversations, and fun. Please RSVP to Deb Samples at debsamplesbooks@gmail.com Turkey & Ham drive We will be sharing our bounty with a ham and turkey drive for the Brownsburg Community School Corporation Food Pantry this year. Bring in a frozen turkey or a fresh or frozen ham starting Sunday October, 21 through Sunday, November 18. You can bring in any size you wish as the pantry serves families of different sizes. Book donations, please! The holidays are approaching, and ALPHA students have few books to read on holiday themes. For example, we're seeking copies of Polar Express, The Night Before Christmas, and Olive the Other Reindeer. If you have picture books or easy-reader books about Halloween, Thanksgiving, or Christmas, please leave them on the sign-up table in the back of the worship space, or contact Deb Samples at debsamplesbooks@gmail.com Get Connected! (for Newcomers and Regulars!) I d like to be added to Good Samaritan s list. I m new just checking things out. Don t add me to anything yet. I d like to ask for your prayers for. Something we didn t think of:. Your name: Your Your phone: Thoughts you want to share? 11
