21 st Sunday after Pentecost Abbreviations used in the order of service: ELW: The red Evangelical Lutheran Worship books. Page numbers (p.) refer to the numbered pages in the front 1/3 of the ELW. Hymn or song numbers (#) refer to the hymns and songs in the middle and back 2/3 of the ELW. SGP: The green Songs for a Gospel People books. P: Presiding Minister or Presider C: Congregation (congregational parts are in bold.) At various points in the service the Presiding Minister will ask you to stand or sit. If standing is too difficult please feel free to remain seated. GATHERING (Quiet reflection to prepare for worship) Brief Order of Confession and Forgiveness P: In the name of the Father, and the Son (+), and the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: Jesus taught us to love God with all our being and to love our neighbours as we love ourselves, but we find that by our own strength, effort, and will, we are not able to do so. As the scriptures tell us, If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (I John 1:8-9) (Silence for self-examination) P: Let us pray. All: Most merciful God, we confess that we have not loved you with our whole heart, and that we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. In your compassion poured out for us in Jesus Christ, forgive our sin
and grant us your Holy Spirit so that we may be strengthened to serve you and serve our neighbours. Amen. P: God seeks out the lost, welcomes back those who have strayed, and forgives those who turn their hearts to draw near to God. And so, I proclaim to you that Almighty God, rich in mercy, abundant in love, forgives your sin and grants you newness of life in Jesus Christ! C: Thanks be to God! Gathering Song: "Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty ELW #413 P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you. Kyrie (the music for this can be found in ELW p. 203) Cantor: Have mercy on us, Lord, and hear our solemn prayer, C: We come to hear your living word; it saves us from despair. Cantor: Have mercy on us, Christ, and wash away our sin; C: Pour out your grace and make us whole that new life may begin. Cantor: Have mercy on us, Lord, make sin and shame depart; C: Renew us with your saving pow r; create in us new hearts! Gloria (music for this can be found in ELW p. 204) 1. Glory be to God in heaven; peace, good-will to all on earth. Mighty God of all creation, Father of surpassing worth; We exalt you, we adore you, we lift high our thanks and praise. Saints and angels bow before you; here on earth our songs we raise. 2. Glory be to Christ forever, Lamb of God and Lord of love, Son of God and gracious Saviour, you have come from heav n above; On the cross you died to save us; now you reign at God s right hand. Hear our prayer; restore, forgive us; in your promise firm we stand. 3. Holy One we now acclaim you; Lord alone, to you we call;
Holy One in faith we name you, God most high, yet near to all. Jesus Christ, with God the Spirit, in the Father s splendour bright. For the peace that we inherit, glory be to God on high. The Prayer of the Day P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray (the Presider offers the Prayer of the Day) Choir: It Is Well with My Soul Words by Horatio G. Spafford; Music by Philip P. Bliss; Choral Setting by Cindy Berry Children s Time Children's Song: "Go Now in Peace" (the music for this can be found in SGP #67) Go now in peace, go now in peace. May the love of God surround you Everywhere, everywhere you may go. (Repeat) WORD Job 23:1-9, Then Job answered: "Today also my complaint is bitter; his hand is heavy despite my groaning. Oh, that I knew where I might find him, that I might come even to his dwelling! I would lay my case before him, and fill my mouth with arguments. I would learn what he would answer me, and understand what he would say to me. Would he contend with me in the greatness of his power? No; but he would give heed to me. There an upright person could reason with him, and I should be acquitted forever by my judge. "If I go forward, he is not there; or backward, I cannot perceive him; on the left he hides, and I cannot behold him; I turn to the right, but I cannot see him. God has made my heart faint; the Almighty has terrified me; If only I could vanish in darkness, and thick darkness would cover my face! R: Holy word, holy wisdom! C: Thanks be to God!
Psalm 22:1-15 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from helping me, from the words of my groaning? O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer; and by night, but find no rest. Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. In you our ancestors trusted; they trusted, and you delivered them. To you they cried, and were saved; in you they trusted, and were not put to shame. But I am a worm, and not human; scorned by others, and despised by the people. All who see me mock at me; they make mouths at me, they shake their heads; "Commit your cause to the LORD; let him deliver-- let him rescue the one in whom he delights!" Yet it was you who took me from the womb; you kept me safe on my mother's breast. On you I was cast from my birth, and since my mother bore me you have been my God. Do not be far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to help. Many bulls encircle me, strong bulls of Bashan surround me; they open wide their mouths at me, like a ravening and roaring lion. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast; my mouth is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; you lay me in the dust of death. Hebrews 4:12-16 Indeed, the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And before him no creature is hidden, but all are naked and laid bare to the eyes of the one to whom we must render an account. Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. R: Holy word, holy wisdom! C: Thanks be to God!
Gospel Acclamation (music for this can be found in ELW p. 205): Alleluia! Lord and Saviour; open now your saving word. Let it burn like fire within us; speak until our hearts are stirred. Alleluia! Lord we sing for the good news that you bring. Mark 10:17-31 P: The Gospel according to Mark, the 10 th Chapter C: Glory to you, O Lord As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: 'You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not defraud; Honor your father and mother.'" He said to him, "Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth." Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, "You lack one thing: Go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me." When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions. Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, "How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!" And the disciples were perplexed at these words. But Jesus said to them again, "Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God." They were greatly astounded and said to one another, "Then who can be saved?" Jesus looked at them and said, "For mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible." Peter began to say to him, "Look, we have left everything and followed you." Jesus said, "Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age--houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields with persecutions--and in the age to come eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first." P: The Gospel of the Lord C: Praise to you, O Christ Sermon (Silence for reflection follows) Hymn of the Day: Jesus, Still Lead On " ELW #624 Prayers of Intercession (responsive form) Lord, in your mercy,..hear our prayer!
Sharing the Peace of God P: The peace of the Lord be with you. C: And also with you. (You may share the peace of God with others by offering your hand or a hug or some other sign of goodwill accompanied by the words, "Peace be with you," or "The peace of the Lord be with you," etc.} MEAL The Offering The gifts of the people are gathered up. As the gifts are brought forward all stand and sing the Offertory Song Let the Vineyards Be Fruitful (music for this can be found in ELW #182): Let the vineyards be fruitful, Lord, and fill to the brim our cup of blessing. Gather a harvest from the seeds that were sown, that we may be fed with the bread of life. Gather the hopes and the dreams of all, unite them with the prayers we offer now. Grace our table with your blessing, and give us a foretaste of the feast to come. Assisting Minister: Let us pray. All: Blessed are you, O God, maker of all things. Through your goodness you have blessed us with these gifts: our selves, out time, and our possessions. Use us, and what we have gathered, in feeding the world with your love, through the one who gave himself for us, Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord. Amen The Great Thanksgiving (spoken) P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you.
P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise. P: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Saviour Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Sanctus (sung; the music for this can be found on ELW p.207) Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heav n and earth are full with your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest, hosanna in the highest. The presider proclaims the Good News in the Words of Institution ( In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread. ) At the end of the Words of Institution, the Presider introduces the Lord s Prayer with Lord, remember us in your kingdom and hear us as we sing the prayer you taught. The Lord s Prayer (sung; the music for this can be found in SGP #12) C: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. A note on Sharing in the Holy Communion Meal You are welcome to participate in the Holy Communion meal. We are all part of the Body of Christ gathered around Christ s table: it is Jesus who invites.
Wine and grape juice are available in the small glasses. Please indicate your preference to the Assistant. The common cup has wine. Indicate your preference for the common cup by raising an index finger. When you receive the bread, please cup your hands one in the other, palms up, so the Presider can place the bread in your palm. Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) As the Presider breaks the bread, the congregation sings Lamb of God (music for this can be found on ELW p. 208) 1. O Lamb of God, you bear the sin of all the world away; You suffered death our lives to save; have mercy now we pray. 2. O Lamb of God, you bear the sin of all the world away; You set us free from guilt and grave; have mercy now we pray 3. O Lamb of God, you bear the sin of all the world away; Eternal peace with God you made; give us your peace we pray. Communion Hymns: ELW #592, #596, #595 After all have communed: P: The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in his grace. C: Amen. Post-Communion Canticle (music for this can be found in ELW #207) Thankful hearts and voices raise, tell everyone what God has done. Let everyone who seeks the Lord rejoice and bear the name of Christ. Send us with your promises and lead your people forth in joy, With shouts of thanksgiving. Alleluia, alleluia. The theologians of the ancient Church (before AD 800) regarded John as the heart of the Bible the distillation of everything that the Bible is really about. Join in to study this key book. We meet at noon to share a time of fellowship over bag lunches and dessert. The study itself begins at 12:30 p.m. and goes until 2:00. Carnations for All Saints' Sunday Everyone is invited to purchase a $2/ea. to remember a deceased loved one (one carnation per person you are commemorating). The carnations will serve as the altar flowers for Sunday, November 4, All Saints Sunday. You will be able to take the flower(s) you purchased home after the service. If you would like to make a purchase, please use the special envelopes that have been prepared for this purpose. On the envelopes you will be asked to name the person in whose memory you are buying the flower. The names of all those being commemorated will be listed in the bulletin. The proceeds of the flower purchases will go to ORLC.
