4 Page 4 GREEN TEAM MESSAGE Solitude, Spirituality and Wilderness In our Christian faith, solitude, spirituality and wilderness are strongly linked marks the 50th anniversary of the passage of the Wilderness Act. To help commemorate the event, Creation Justice Ministries put together a 50-day celebration of God s creation with nature wilderness scenes, poems, and writings to help remind us of what has been preserved, and how much this preservation is needed. In our Christian faith, solitude, spirituality and wilderness are strongly linked. We are readily reminded of how a solitary wilderness experience helped both John the Baptist and Jesus bring together a focus which fortified their resolution to do what was right during a time of severe trial. And while Christianity eventually became the official religion within the Roman Empire, there were significant persecutions in 204, 249, and 292 AD under the Emperors Caracalla, Decius and Diocletian which caused many of the most devout Christians to flee into the deserts of Egypt rather than renounce their faith. Well-wishers might journey out to check on the well-being of these initial "hermits", to bring them food, to talk with them about what they had learned, to perhaps set up a small chapel so that they might pray and worship together. These acts set in motion what eventually came to be the system of creating a monastery. But none of this would have happened had there not been a wilderness to go into. Some of the passages CJM compiled are quite inspiring. For example: As Martin Luther said, "God writes the Gospel not in the Bible alone, but also on trees, and in the flowers and clouds and stars". Psalm 65: "The pastures of the wilderness overflow, the hills gird themselves with joy, The meadows clothe themselves with flocks, the valleys deck themselves with grain, They shout and sing together for joy". An excerpt from "The Peace of Wild Things", by the farmer and writer Wendell Berry - "...When despair grows in me...i go lie down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds. I come into the Peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief..." And as John Muir observed, "...No wonder the hills and groves were God's first temples, and the more they are cut down and hewn into cathedrals and churches, the farther off and dimmer seems the Lord Himself..." The Wilderness Act was passed in But a strong voice as to what the Wilderness Act should encompass and why came in a letter of December 1960, composed by the writer and professor Wallace Stegner. That letter came to be known as "the Wilderness Letter", and it says in part: "...What I want to speak for is not so much the wilderness uses, valuable as those are, but the wilderness idea, which is a resource in itself... Something will have gone out of us as a people if we ever let the remaining wilderness be destroyed; if we permit the last virgin forests to be turned into comic books and plastic cigarette cases; if we drive the few remaining members of the wild species into zoos or to extinction; if we pollute the last clear air and dirty the last clean streams and push our paved roads through the last of the silence, so that never again will Americans be free in their own country from the noise, the exhausts, the stinks of human and automotive waste. And so that never again can we have the chance to see ourselves single, separate, vertical and individual in the world, part of the environment of trees and rocks and soil, brother to the other animals, part of the natural world and competent to belong in it..."
