LESSON 1, June 3, 2012 Jesus Teaches Prayer APPLICATION To show the need to know how to pray acceptably. SCRIPTURES TO READ Text: Matthew 6:9-13. Related Scripture: Genesis 24:12-14; 32:9-12; 1 Samuel 1:10, 11; 2 Chronicles 14; Nehemiah 1:3-11; Isaiah 55:6; Daniel 9:3-14; Matthew 7:7-11; Luke 2:36-38; Acts 9:11, Devotional Reading: Solomon s Prayer Accepted by God, 1 Kings 8:22-30; 9:1-9. Introduction What is prayer? Nelson s Bible Dictionary defines prayer simply as communication with God (Electronic Database: Nelson s Illustrated Bible Dictionary, Copyright (c)1986, Thomas Nelson Publishers). It is not some mystical form one must follow to achieve an audience with God. It is merely communicating with the Almighty God. In this quarter s studies, we will examine the ultimate example of prayer, Jesus Christ, the Son of God. How He approached the matter of prayer can instruct His people on this vital tool in the Christian s walk. Some people think prayer is a matter of saying the right words, using flowery language or speaking a long time. Jesus taught that prayer was not to be with vain repetitions and much speaking (Matt. 6:7) nor uttered to receive people s praise (verse 5). Prayer is one s open heart pouring out the burdens felt. Jesus wanted His disciples to understand what was needed to make prayer 2

effective. He gave the words of the Text as a Model Prayer for His disciples to follow. These were not the precise words He wanted them to repeat every time they prayed. Neither was it a magic formula which would automatically produce the desired results. The disciples were to learn from this example. The Model Prayer shows some important elements which prayers should include. This formula will be the focus of this lesson. 1. Prayer Is Praise (Matthew 6:9) One aspect of prayer that is often forgotten is the need to honor God through the words we speak to Him. Jesus began the Model Prayer with the statement, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name (Matt. 6:9). This statement speaks of two things. The prayer begins with a statement of relationship. To call God, Our Father, indicates the individual has become part of the family of God. How can people become the children of God? John described how a person might enter that relationship with God. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name (John 1:12). This speaks of one being blood-kin to and begotten by God. The believer has a special relationship with God and can approach Him on the basis of that relationship. This is like a little child going into his father s office to sit on his lap. Other children might not have that right, but the son or the daughter can approach the father. The children of God can go to Him in prayer on the basis of their relationship which points to the glory and grace of the Heavenly Father. Prayer is offered to God in reverence and respect. Jesus continued His prayer with the statement, Hallowed be thy name (Matt. 6:9). God is absolutely perfect and holy. Nothing and no one can achieve His character. As such, He is worthy of worship even in one s prayers. When the Lord brought the people of Israel through the Red Sea and defeated the army of Pharaoh, Moses sang a song declaring the wondrous majesty of God. Who is like unto thee, O Lord, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders? (Ex. 15:11). Our prayers should acknowledge our understanding of the glorious wonder of our God. 3

Though an often neglected part of prayer, believers should always take a portion of their prayer time and give praise to God. To do less is to be somewhat selfish in prayer. He should always be the focus of attention. Prayers are no different. Prayers can focus the attention on Him rather than on self when He is receiving worship. 2. Prayer Is for Provision (Matthew 6:11) Sometimes people are so consumed with daily needs that they forget the One who provides their daily necessities. They worry about where the next meal is coming from, who will provide their clothing or where they might sleep at night. God is gracious in supplying one s daily needs. Does this mean God s people should not bother to ask God about these requirements for life? Since God already knows what people need, why waste His time and theirs in such pursuits? There is a reason Jesus told His disciples to pray, Give us this day our daily bread (Matt. 6:11). When the people of Israel were in the wilderness, God promised to provide their daily requirement of food. He would not give them a vast amount of food occasionally. He assured the people that He would bring them food on a daily basis. Why did God use this pattern for His provision? People should learn to rely on God. When people have more than enough for their daily needs, they tend to stop thinking about God. After all, they have all they require. God wanted the Israelites to remember to trust in Him. Giving only enough food for that day helped the people remember God every day. God wants His children to remember Him every day now as well. This is the purpose of families taking the time to offer a prayer of thanksgiving each time they gather for a meal. That act directs the attention to the true provider of the food. Though the parents might have worked hard to provide for the family, God provides food for the table. The prayer for daily provision is a means to keep the family s attention focused on God. 3. Prayer Is for Pardon (Matthew 6:12) Far too many people have difficulty with this aspect of prayer. They might not mind offering God the praise He is due. They might even acknowledge that God is the source of all the blessings in their lives. But when it comes to confession of sin for 4

pardon, they are taken aback. They do not want to admit they have sinned. It is far easier to look at other people and see their faults and failures. Then, the individual can talk about the other person s sins rather than admitting his own failures. There is a danger in failing to confess sins. When sins remain within one s life, there is a break in fellowship with God. King David committed the terrible sin of adultery followed by lies and murder to cover-up his transgression. For a time it appeared his cover-up had been successful, but God always knew what he had done. When confronted with his sin, David repented of his iniquity and asked God s forgiveness. He begged God, Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation (Psalm 51:12). There had been a break in fellowship. Peter faced a similar situation. His sin had been the denial of his Lord three times. When the rooster crowed, the Lord peered at His failing disciple. The look of love from those sad eyes pierced Peter s heart. He wept bitterly over his failure. Thankfully, the Lord later came to him with love and forgiveness. Peter was restored to fellowship with God. Failing to confess sins to God can result in an ineffective prayer life. Behold, the Lord s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: but your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear (Isa. 59:1, 2). When it appears prayers go unanswered, it might be wise to see what sins remain part of one s life. God wants His children to confess their sins to Him so they can receive forgiveness. 4. Prayer Is for Purpose (Matthew 6:10, 13) People on earth often want their own way. Everything that happens should be for their benefit. Everything happens to give honor to the Creator. Thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created (Rev. 4:11). Jesus taught an important part of prayer should be the request for God s will to be accomplished on earth as it is fulfilled in Heaven. On earth, people often neglect what God wants. God s people should want God s will to be accomplished on the earth in general and in believers lives in particular. 5

As the Model Prayer drew to its conclusion, Jesus mentioned the importance of God s guidance in life. Too many people want to go about life in whatever direction seems good to them. Then, they wonder why life turns out so chaotic. God has offered to lead. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God (Rom. 8:14). The problem is not in His leadership. He will always guide toward truth and righteousness (John 16:13). The problem is in the following. Jesus talked about following the wrong guide. He said, If the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch (Matt. 15:14). Therefore, it is vital to follow the proper leadership. Does this mean Christians should not listen to the advice of other people? Paul saw the value of godly leadership. He recognized that some might try to follow him. His recommendation was, Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ (1 Cor. 11:1). When Jesus admonished His disciples to pray about God s guidance, He wanted them to recognize that only God could take them in the right direction. They should avoid temptation and any evil act. Conclusion Jesus closed His Model Prayer with another statement of praise to God. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen (Matt. 6:13). From beginning to end, the focus of prayer must be on God. While it is totally acceptable to take our petitions to Him, we should always be seeking His will in these matters. He truly is worthy of our worship. Will you learn from this marvelous example of prayer? 6

LESSON 2, June 10, 2012 Jesus Prayed Alone APPLICATION To show that Christ sets the example for private prayer time. SCRIPTURES TO READ Text: Mark 1: Related Scripture: Judges 16:25-30; 2 Samuel 7:18-29; 2 Kings 20:17; Ezra 9:5, 6; Psalms 55:17; 119:58; Daniel 6:4-27; Habakkuk 1:2; Matthew 14:23; Luke 9:18; 1 Thessalonians 5:17; James 5:16. Devotional Reading: Christ Practiced Private Prayer, Matthew 6:5, 6. Introduction If asked to describe a time of prayer, most people would begin discussing a special time when a church gathers for public prayer. It might be a time of severe drought where churches meet to ask God for rain. It could be a time of a terrible tragedy when people gather to seek God s face. Some people might recall some special individual who was a person of prayer. Maybe it was a dear, saintly lady who, when she prayed, seemed to enter into the presence of God. Perhaps it was a pastor from the past who always appeared to have God s attention. Most people think public prayer is when people gather to plead their cause before God. In the Bible, the instances of public prayer far outnumber private prayer. The public prayers are often times of dedication to God. When the Temple was completed, Solomon engaged in a season of prayer where the people of Israel joined with Him. Jesus described some people who looked upon public prayer as a time for showing off. And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the 7

hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward (Matt. 6:5). There was no genuine communication between the hypocrites and God. The greatest biblical prayers occurred when an individual communed alone with God. Hannah was a woman with a burden on her heart. While she went to the house of God to pray, her communication was alone with God. He heard her petition and granted her request. Daniel was a man accustomed to prayer. He went to his private chamber three times every day to talk with God. Even when a law was passed making it illegal to pray to anyone but the king, Daniel continued his time of private prayer. Jesus was accustomed to finding time for private communication between Him and the Father. Some might wonder why this was necessary. While Jesus was on earth, He limited Himself. He remained fully God, but because of the frailty of His human flesh, Jesus needed this time of communication. He gained fellowship and strength from such encounters with God. What Jesus did during His earthly ministry serves as the model for Christians lives. They also need times of private communication with the Heavenly Father. 1. Jesus Began His Day with Prayer The statement is often made, Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Even the word breakfast shows its value. It means to break one s fast. The first meal of the day helps to get the metabolism going and gives energy for the day. If physical food is important to the health of the body, what can help a person gain a spiritual boost for the activities of the day? That lift can come through beginning the day with a time of prayer. The time of Jesus prayer from the Text came fairly early in His earthly ministry. Jesus had begun His time of service by preaching, teaching and healing the sick. The numbers He attracted were tremendous. He had little time for anything but ministering to their needs. Early in His ministry, Jesus saw the importance of beginning the day on the proper note. He arose early in the morning and separated Himself for this time of prayer with the Father. This act would give Him the needed energy to continue His work among the people. 8

Every day can hold its own difficulties. When dealing with situations at work, people need to have the proper mind-set to react properly. If care is not exercised, people can have their Christian testimony compromised. A coworker presents an idea that will produce greater profits for the company. The only problem is that it is a little underhanded. If care is not exercised, people can be swayed by the bottom line. If Christians in the workplace have prepared themselves by beginning the day in prayer, they can take the needed stand against unethical practices. A time of praying to God at the beginning of each day can help prepare one s mind for all that will come. 2. Jesus Found Solitude for Prayer When Jesus entered into His most important times of prayer, He always did it alone. Here, early in His ministry, Jesus began the practice of separating Himself from all others so He could commune more closely with the Father. Whatever the special need, whatever the circumstance, Jesus wanted to talk with the Father, just the two of them. When making special decisions, Jesus separated Himself in a time of solitary prayer. The Lord wanted twelve men to remain with Him during His earthly ministry. These men would form the leadership core for the church, once Jesus had ascended to the Father. The night before the selection took place, Jesus went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God (Luke 6:12). Jesus sought God s guidance in the process. It was these men who would instruct the church and help them when He was gone. One of these chosen men would betray Him into the hands of His enemies. It was an important decision, and Christ went to the Father for help. People today should follow this example. Rather than making a spur of the moment choice, God s children should carefully weigh the options. Then, they should take the matter to God for His guidance. Only then can a godly and proper decision be made. When facing dramatic troubles, Jesus separated Himself in a time of solitary prayer. On the night the betrayal and arrest took place, Jesus took His disciples to the Garden of Gethsemane. When they arrived at the garden, He left the disciples inside the gate. He took Peter, James and John a little farther into the garden telling them to watch and pray. Jesus parted from 9

them for His time of communion with the Father. In that lonely place, Jesus poured out His heart to God. He knew what was swiftly approaching. He understood the shame and sorrow He would face. The writer of Hebrews described His mind-set as, He endured the cross, despising the shame (Heb. 12:2). Cruel and torturous times were ahead for the Son of God, so He took His petition to the Father. Again, people today should take their burdens and troubles to God. The old hymn encourages each person to take your burden to the Lord and leave it there ( Leave It There words by C. Albert Tindley). Hezekiah followed this sound advice. During his reign, Hezekiah faced the prospect of the cruel Assyrians overrunning the city of Jerusalem. The opposing general spoke harsh words advising the king of what would take place. Hezekiah took his petition to the house of God and asked the Lord to help in that situation. The Lord heard his petition and defeated the army of the Assyrians. Prayer is helpful in difficult days. Jesus instructed His disciples how to enter into special times of prayer. They should enter their closets to commune alone with the Lord. The individual will not be disturbed by outside distractions. This can be a quiet time of fellowship with God when petitions are expressed. God s people need these times of peace and quiet to commune with God. One pastor has a small room off his church office as a place of peace and quiet so he can spend time alone with God. Others have set aside a certain time of the day not to be disturbed. They might turn off the phone for a while and spend time with God. Finding solitude with the Lord will benefit all of His children. 3. Jesus Set the Example for Christians To Follow Peter described the ministry of Christ as having the purpose of setting the example for God s children to follow. He left us an example, that ye should follow his steps (1 Peter 2:21). The writer of Hebrews shared the example of many saints who had lived by faith. They were men and women who set a good standard for people to follow. Even today, godly examples are all around. Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience 10

the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith (Heb. 12:1, 2). He is the example above all examples. This includes prayer. There was a time when Jesus was engaged in His normal pattern of prayer. The disciples had watched His diligence in prayer and asked Him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples (Luke 11:1). They understood He had given them an example to follow, and they would be wise to learn from Him. God s people should seek to imitate how Christ lived His life. He was careful to pray at all times in His life. We should be creatures of prayer. Conclusion Can you recall some saint whose prayer life was awesome? When that faithful believer began praying, it seemed that the doors of Heaven opened to receive those petitions. What was different about that person? It could be that dear saint had learned from the example of the Savior. He wanted close fellowship with God and sought His face in his prayers. It does not have to be someone else whose prayers are touching Heaven. Jesus gave us an example, and we can learn. Maybe you should spend time alone with God. This was how Jesus began His day. How will you begin your day tomorrow? 11

LESSON 3, June 17, 2012 Jesus Teaches Persistence in Prayer APPLICATION To show that persistence in one s prayer life is scriptural. SCRIPTURES TO READ Text: Luke 11:5-13. Related Scripture: Psalms 27:7; 56:9; 61; 102:2; 116:2; Luke 6:12; Acts 2:42; Romans 12:12; Ephesians 6:18; Colossians 4:2; 1 Thessalonians 5:17; 1 Timothy 5:5; Hebrews 10:25; James 4:8. Devotional Reading: Even Friends Are Persuaded by Persistence, Luke 18:1-8. Introduction What does it mean to be persistent in prayer? This cannot mean merely to speak many words when praying. Jesus talked about that in His Sermon on the Mount. When ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking (Matt. 6:7). Many of the Pharisees thought their long, flowery prayers would automatically draw them nearer to the Lord. Was that what Jesus wanted? Did He want to hear words spoken to fill time? No, Jesus wanted His disciples to be purposeful when they talked with God. The Lord described a widow of Israel who faced a terrible problem. She had no hope of a solution apart from the city judge. She went to him for help. Though he did not readily offer his help, because of persistence in her requests, the judge finally avenged her of her adversary. Persistence paid off. The goal of that story was to teach that men ought always to pray, and not to faint (Luke 18:1). 12

Why is it valuable for God s people to show determination when they are praying? Certainly, it is not because God is uninformed about the troubles a person is facing. The Lord wants His children to be reliant on Him. He is the answer to their needs. If they fail to come to Him, they cannot hope for lasting answers. He is the source for all help. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father (James 1:17). The children of God should pray with persistence and dogged determination. 1. Jesus Taught Practical Praying (Luke 11:5, 6) The occasion of Christ s teaching on prayer was a time when Jesus taught persistence in prayer. He prayed when times were good and bad. He prayed when He faced important decisions or merely to begin the day. The disciples saw this persistence in living and came to Him with a request. Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples (Luke 11:1). Jesus provided His example for them to follow. These were not words which would compose every prayer. Instead, they were given as an example of how to communicate with the Father. Then, Jesus launched into a discussion on why prayer was such an important part of living. His dialogue began by talking about practical matters. Is prayer to be part of a person s daily schedule? The illustration Jesus gave centered on a person who received a guest late at night. The friend might have been expected at a later time but was unexpected now. The friend might not have sent word of his pending arrival. Whatever the reason, the one who had received the guest was unprepared. How could he handle the need? The man went to a friendly neighbor to ask if that household had any bread to set before the guest. He did not go to his neighbor at a reasonable hour. It was at midnight. In that era, when they had no electric lights and oil for lamps was expensive, most people went to bed shortly after nightfall. Knocking on the door at midnight was unusual. Yet, the man who had unexpected guests felt the neighbor was friendly and helpful enough that he would graciously receive such an interruption of sleep. Few people would enjoy being awakened so suddenly with such a seemingly insignificant request. Yet, the friend arose from bed to grant the request. The need was clearly expressed. 13

The man who received the unexpected guest did not ask for just anything. He knew exactly what he needed and spoke of that requirement. It was the clearly expressed need that was met by the neighbor. People should be as clear in their petitions to God. Prayers should have a practical aspect to them. Many prayers are lifted toward Heaven which say almost nothing. They might use beautiful, flowery language, but mere beauty does not make a prayer acceptable to God. When a child of God has a specific need, he should express it to the Lord. This was taught by Jesus in the Model Prayer. He told the disciples to pray, Give us day by day our daily bread (Luke 11:3). Everyone needs daily food. Everyone should take that need to the Lord. That is practical praying. Maybe a family member is sick and needs to recover. Praying for God to help that individual is practical praying. If a person refuses to express the burdens of the heart, why should God help? He expects His people to tell Him their needs and their burdens. That is practical praying. 2. Jesus Taught Persistent Praying (Luke 11:7-10) The illustration used by Jesus concerning the neighbor coming at midnight to ask for help in providing food for his guest shows the value of persistence in praying. When he awoke the neighbor at such a late hour, he believed the friend would arise from his bed and would help with the need. The neighbor did not get out of bed because it was easy or comfortable to do. The entire family had gone to bed and was asleep. To arise in the night would cause a disturbance that would awaken the family. So the neighbor did not get up to help because it was easy. He arose because of his neighbor s importunity (Luke 11:8). This word has the idea of boldness and persistence. The one who had received the unexpected guest was in such need that he was bold and persistent in his request. He received what was needed because of his persistence. God s children do not have to come before God in prayer with a sense of fear and dread. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, 14

and find grace to help in time of need (Heb. 4:15, 16). Because of all Christ has done, believers can come into His presence with boldness. The Old Testament gives the story of Queen Esther seeking an audience with King Ahasuerus. The law was that no one could come into the king s presence unless he had been called for an audience. If one came before him unbidden, he could be executed. If the king extended his scepter, that person could remain alive. Esther came before the king even though he had not called her. He extended his scepter toward her showing his approval of her presence. There would be fear in coming to the king under these circumstances. God does not begrudgingly grant an audience. He longs for His people to come to Him in prayer. They do not have to fear coming into His presence. They can have boldness. This implies the need for God s people to come to Him boldly and consistently. Persistence in prayer is helpful. Hannah longed to have a child. Her husband loved her, but she wanted a child to care for and love. She prayed year after year that God would grant her petition. She did not give up and quit her prayer simply because it had not been answered. She was persistent. Finally, God granted her request and Samuel was born. If she had stopped praying earlier, she might not have received her desired child. Persistence in prayer has great benefits. 3. Jesus Taught Prayers with Promise (Luke 11:11-13) God s people need to remember He is their Heavenly Father. He is not some uncaring, detached ruler who does not consider His children. He is a loving Father who wants to provide for His own. The illustration in the text shows how a loving father provides for his children. If they ask for fish to eat, a loving father will not throw them a snake to kill and eat. If they ask for bread to eat, a loving father will not toss them a stone on which to snack. He provides the needs of his family. If earthly fathers have that much love for their children, how much more love does the Heavenly Father have for His children? God wants what is best for His children. The problem some people have is that He often does not give them what they want. They asked for something in particular and did not receive it. 15

Therefore, they concluded God must not answer prayers. The important factor in prayers and answers is not the will of a person. God gives only what is best for the individual. A young lady might pray that her boyfriend will ask her to marry him. That young man might not be who God wants for the young lady. God might have someone better. Why would God give her what she wanted even though it might hurt her in the end? God always wants His children to have what is needed to make them better servants of the King. The truly good things in life will have God as their source (James 1:17). God s children need to trust His love and goodness. Conclusion What does it mean to be persistent in prayer? It certainly does not mean to ask God for something one time and forget about it. That kind of prayer shows no real concern for the petition requested. Persistence means the individual will pray for something until God sends a clear answer. Sometimes the answer might be a refusal, and when that happens, the refusal is for our good. We should always yield to God s wisdom. He knows far more than we do. Though we might not understand the direction He wants to take us, we can persistently and boldly continue in prayer until we see what He wants. Never give up in prayer. Persistence will pay off. 16

LESSON 4, June 24, 2012 Praying in Jesus Name APPLICATION To show that praying in Jesus name is by the authority of Jesus. SCRIPTURES TO READ Text: John 14:7-14. Related Scripture: Daniel 7:13, 14; Matthew 7:7; 11:27; 21:22; 28:18; Mark 11:22-26; Luke 11:9, 10; John 3:35; 5:22; 13:3; 16:23; Acts 2:36; Romans 14:9; 1 Corinthians 15:27; Ephesians 1:10, 20, 21; 1 Peter 3:22; Revelation 17:14. Devotional Reading: A Great Promise in Prayer, John 15:7-16. Introduction What does it mean to pray in Jesus name? Some might think it means to close each prayer with the statement, In Jesus name we pray. That seems to be praying in Jesus name. The thought behind Jesus statement in my name (John 14:13, 14) means much more than parroting the words. It has the idea of appealing to the authority behind the name. A minister stands before a couple desiring to be married. He states, By the authority vested in me by the state, I now pronounce you husband and wife. The authority to grant marriage licenses comes from the state s government. When praying in the name of Jesus, one is calling for the authority from Heaven to meet needs and grant requests. It is God s power, not human rights. How can people approach God in prayer? The writer of Hebrews shows how a person might enter into an audience with the King of kings. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched 17

with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need (Heb. 4:15, 16). The child of God can have confidence in coming to God with the cares and blessings of life. When people go to God in prayer, they acknowledge the lofty position God possesses. Praying brings the individual in line with the will of God. Praying is not for people to gain all their wants and wishes. Prayer has the goal of accomplishing the purpose of God. When Jesus spoke these words to His disciples, He wanted to instill in them an understanding of what it took to accomplish His purpose and plan. He gave them some principles that would help them begin focusing their attention on Him. These thoughts can help people today have more effective prayers. 1. Seeing Jesus Is Seeing God (John 14:7-9) Leading up to the Text, Jesus had spoken some disturbing thoughts to the disciples. He had told them of His coming betrayal and death. He would soon depart from them, but they were not to be overwhelmed with despair. Ye believe in God, believe also in me (John 14:1). There was a unity of Father and Son that was difficult for them to understand. The Lord wanted to reinforce His identity and their need for faith. Jesus told the disciples that knowing Him was knowing God and seeing Him was seeing God (verses 7, 9). How could the man, Jesus, also be God? The disciples believed He was the Messiah, the Son of God. But could anyone really know God the Father without seeing Him? Jesus was insistent that He and the Father were equal and uniquely joined. Earlier in His ministry the Lord had declared, I and my Father are one (John 10:30). There was a unique relationship between Father and Son, a relationship the disciples needed to understand. Knowing Jesus was the same as knowing God. Seeing Him was the same as seeing God. How does this relate to the matter of prayer? People tend to ask help from those they know and understand. Churches are often the recipients of requests for financial help. This is because people know churches are composed of kind and compassionate members. If there is a need, churches are often 18

the first to respond. They want to share the love of God through their actions. People in the world know this about churches, and they will ask for help. The same is true of God. If people do not have knowledge of Him, they will not go to Him for help. Jesus wanted His disciples to know the Father so they would readily go to Him in prayer. Seeing and knowing Jesus aids people in seeing and knowing the Father. 2. Believing God Is Believing Jesus (John 14:10, 11) Jesus called upon His disciples to believe in and trust God. They had faith in Jesus. They had followed Him for over three years. They had seen His power and heard His wondrous sermons. Jesus reached out to the most undeserving to help them. They were convinced of His character. When Jesus asked their opinion of His character, Peter responded, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God (Matt. 16:16). Jesus wanted them to take that faith to a higher level. They needed to believe in and trust God. What is the value of this belief when it comes to prayer? Paul wrote about salvation and how a person could obtain eternal life. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? (Rom. 10:14). The idea was that no one would call upon God to save himself unless there was faith that it would happen. This is true in prayer as well. Why would people call upon God unless they had confidence He would hear? That would be like a child going to her father and asking for something she knew he would not do. The little girl would not waste her time. If people do not believe God is willing to grant their request, they will not spend the time asking. They would consider it useless. Belief in God is a means of pleasing Him. But without faith it is impossible to please him (Heb. 11:6). The word please has the idea of making fully agreeable or fully gratified. It is impossible to please God unless the petitioner trusts in Him. One s prayers are ineffective unless there is faith. 3. Trusting God Means Greater Works Will Come (John 14:12) Jesus declared His disciples would do greater works than these (John 14:12). How can anyone do works more fantastic or phenomenal than the works of Christ? He healed the blind, 19

lame and deaf. He calmed terrible storms. He raised people from death. Surely, no one can do greater works than these. What did Jesus mean when He made such a statement? The works churches have done have been more widespread than Jesus works during His earthly ministry. The outreach of Christ was confined to a relatively small region. Judea and the surrounding areas were the only places Jesus traveled. When the Lord sent out His churches, He instructed them not to be confined to that small parcel of land. He wanted His gospel preached throughout the world. Thus, the works of His followers were greater than His in that they reached more people. Always remember that a church s works are actually performed by Christ. A church might preach its message extensively in a region, but when people are saved, it is Jesus who does the saving. Those greater works are accomplished by the hand of God. Jesus preached to vast multitudes during His ministry, but relatively few people responded to His message. When Peter preached on the day of Pentecost, the Lord moved on many, and three thousand were saved that day. Great works will continue to be performed when God s churches are careful to trust Him. 4. Trusting God Means Praying in Jesus Name (John 14:13, 14) People look at verses 13 and 14 and think they have a blank check from God. They think if they use the magic formula of ending a prayer in Jesus name, God is required to give them what they ask. Jesus does not grant anything people want. He wants people to come in line with His will. Many people think whatever they want must be in God s directive purpose for their lives. Rather than wanting to bring God in line with what we want, prayers should be offered to bring us in line with what God wants. How foolish people are when they think they know better than God what would be best. The Lord is omniscient (knowing all things). Nothing is hidden from His understanding. Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world (Acts 15:18). People should humbly yield to His superior knowledge even when it conflicts with what they think He should do. God cares enough about His people to lead them in the right direction and give them what they need for His service. 20

The goal of every prayer should be that the Father may be glorified in the Son (John 14:13). When prayers have the goal of giving God honor and praise, the prayers have proper motivation. This is like the opening statement of the Model Prayer taught by Jesus to His disciples as an example of proper prayer. Jesus said, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name (Matt 6:9). God needs to be adored and highly esteemed. Praying in Jesus name puts self in the background and exalts God by seeking His will in one s life. That kind of prayer, one that seeks God s will over self, will bring the results that are truly needed. Conclusion Prayer is a great tool in the arsenal of God s people. Paul wrote about putting on the whole armor of God. After describing the various parts of the armor, he showed the importance of proper communication in the battle. Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit (Eph. 6:18). Prayer is essential if God s people are to be successful in the battles of life. The Lord encourages us to be careful how we pray. Rather than always thinking about self, we must seek to accomplish whatever it is that God wants. This is why we pray in Jesus name. We are agreeing with Him as to the need and the goal. We declare that we want His will to be accomplished rather than our own. Such prayers will accomplish far more because these prayers are offered to God to bring Him glory. How do our prayers compare with what Jesus taught in these verses? 21

LESSON 5, July 1, 2012 Jesus Prays to His Father APPLICATION To show that Jesus was sent from God the Father. SCRIPTURES TO READ Text: John 11: Related Scripture: Psalm 89:26-28; Matthew 6:6, 9; 10:32; 18:19; 26:39; Mark 14:36; Luke 11:2; 22:42; 23:46; John 10:29, 30; 12:23-30; 14:16; 17:1, 11, 24, 25; Romans 8:15; Galatians 4:6. Devotional Reading: Not Many Truly Know Jesus, Matthew 11: Introduction The method of communication between two individuals often reflects the relationship between them. Good friends will speak to each other in a manner which shows the closeness between them. They might use nicknames that do not appear too flattering, but because of their friendship, it is taken with a measure of acceptance, even of expectation. Families often have little terms of endearment they use when talking to each other. A father might look at his only daughter and call her his baby girl, no matter how old she might be. These terms of endearment also reflect the love held between family members. The term Father as pertaining to God, is not often used in the Old Testament. When it is used in the Old Testament, it often points forward to the relationship between God and His Messiah. When writing about the coming Messiah, Isaiah gave Him special names. He would be called, Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty 22

God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace (Isa. 9:6). David also used the term when pointing forward to the coming Messiah. He shall cry unto me, Thou art my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation. Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth (Psalm 89:26, 27). Yet, the New Testament often used the title Father as a reference to God. Jesus was careful when praying to show His love, reverence and respect for God by calling Him, God. He set the example for all people to follow. 1. Jesus Addressed His Father (John 11:41, 42) One of the names used by Jesus when addressing God was Abba (Mark 14:36). The use of the word Abba came at a harsh time in Christ s life. He was in the Garden of Gethsemane awaiting His betrayal and arrest. He would soon be nailed to the cross. The Father would turn His back on the Son in a few hours (Matt. 27:46). Abba was a word of intimacy between child and parent. It is much like the informal term daddy. Children can approach their father calling him, Daddy, because of their close relationship. It is a term of affection and love. Jesus knew what was coming and drew on the wonderful fellowship the Father and Son had always enjoyed. The prayer uttered by Jesus in the Text came at a time when a dear friend had died. Lazarus and his sisters, Martha and Mary, were faithful friends of Christ. The sisters had sent word to Jesus concerning their brother. Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick (John 11:3). Jesus delayed His coming several days. Finally, He announced to His disciples, Lazarus is dead (verse 14). They arrived in Bethany only to be confronted by the sisters of Lazarus. Why had He delayed His coming? Surely, He could have healed Lazarus while he was alive. Jesus traveled to the grave site. His emotions were raw. He wept at the sorrow of His friends. Jesus commanded that the stone be removed from the door of the tomb. Though there were protests, the stone was moved from the entry. It was in that time of sadness that Jesus offered this prayer to the Father. As Jesus lifted His voice in prayer, He addressed God as His Father. His cry sprang from the relationship He had with God. He did not call out to a stranger. He did not plead for help from an 23

unknown. Jesus called upon one who was near and dear to Him. He prayed to His Father. God s people need to realize they have this same opportunity. God is not some uncaring despot sitting on the throne of unconcern. We have the right to come before the Father with boldness because of the relationship we have with Him. It is like our children coming to us with a request. They come boldly to us knowing we love them and want to help them. When God s children pray, they can come boldly into His presence because He loves them. They do not have to approach Him with fear and trembling. They can come to Him knowing He cares and wants to help. How people look at God is reflected in their prayers. If they do not understand the closeness of relationship they have with Him, they will think of Him as uncaring and unapproachable. That is not who God is. His love is unlimited. His concern about the burdens people face is certain. They can go to Him and address Him as their Father. 2. Jesus Prayer Produced Results (John 11:43-45) When Jesus offered His prayer to the Father and asked Him to reveal His glory to the people, Jesus turned to the tomb and commanded that Lazarus come out of the grave (John 11:43). This command seemed unreasonable. How could a dead man come out of the tomb? By human reckoning it would be impossible, but with God all things are possible. Lazarus, bound in his grave coverings, began to emerge from the tomb. In that day, the dead body was tightly wrapped in a cloth that would cover the entire body, and a separate linen cloth would be secured to the head. When Lazarus emerged from the tomb, all those grave clothes were still in place. He had no way to free himself from the bindings. Jesus called upon the people to unbind him. The people had seen a great miracle that day. Because of what He had done, many people came to believe in Jesus as Savior. While the prayers of God s people today might not produce such a dramatic event as this prayer, all prayers produce results. One lady had a husband who was not a child of God. She and her church prayed for his salvation for over twenty years. Many people shared with him the plan of salvation. He was always kind but unbelieving. After over twenty years of prayers, while the 24

man was on his death bed, he came to know Christ as his Savior. The answer did not come immediately, but it came nonetheless. People have been sick with diseases and have asked churches to pray for them. Many times those diseases have been cured, and the individual set free from the bondage of the illness. The answer came to those prayers of faith. Sometimes prayers produce results by changing the heart of the one praying. People might see a need and begin praying about it. Perhaps they see the need for a missionary to go to some field of labor. They are burdened about that place and begin to pray. The individual might be changed to such an extent that he decides God wants him to be the missionary. The prayers of faith produced a result. It might not have been what was expected, but the change took place. Often people fail in their prayers because they do not really expect anything to happen. God has promised that He will hear every prayer. The problem comes in our hearts when the answer comes in a different way than we expect. That should not hinder prayers from being lifted to Heaven. When God s people pray, things happen. 3. Jesus Prayer and Miracle Created Problems (John 11:46) All the people who were at the tomb when Jesus called Lazarus out of the grave saw the same event. They witnessed a great miracle from God. However, not all the people responded in the same way. Some saw what happened and realized Jesus must be the Messiah. They trusted Him. Some saw the same thing and were upset at the action of Jesus. Rather than being changed positively, they ran to the enemies of Jesus and reported what had taken place. This was done to bring trouble to the Son of God. Raising Lazarus from death was the final straw. They could stand His work no longer. They began plotting His death. People will not always react positively when God begins to work in their lives. God s people might be praying, and God might begin convicting of sin and drawing them to salvation, but each individual must decide what he will do with God s conviction. Some people respond and repent of their sins. When that happens and they trust in Jesus as their Savior, they are given eternal life. That is the glorious prospect of answered 25

prayer. Other people might feel conviction and become angry at God. They feel guilty but are unwilling to admit their sin. Rather than confessing their sins in repentance, they become puffed up and angry that anyone might say their actions are sinful. No one can force another person to repent and be saved. Each individual must respond personally to the conviction and drawing of the Holy Spirit. Prayer will not always produce the results we want. Some people are so angry in their outlook on life that they will never respond to God s conviction of sin. Others might think the one praying feels superior to them, and they will seek some way to strike back. Problems sometimes arise because of prayer. Once again, this problem should not keep a person from praying. God works through the prayers of His saints. Conclusion Do you have a Heavenly Father to go to in prayer? Some people believe in the universal fatherhood of God. By this they mean God is the spiritual Father to all people no matter what they believe. This belief conflicts with what the Word of God states. It speaks of some people who are of their father, the devil (John 8:44). Jesus prayed to His Father because there was a relationship between them. People today can approach God as their Heavenly Father when they have trusted Jesus as their personal Savior. The question remains. Do you have a Heavenly Father to go to in prayer? 26

LESSON 6, July 8, 2012 Jesus Prays for Peter APPLICATION To show how Jesus desires His children to overcome trials. SCRIPTURES TO READ Text: Luke 22: Related Scripture: Genesis 12:14-20; 18:16-33; 19:12-14; 35:1-5; 39:1-6, 20-23; 50:15-21; Exodus 3:11-14; Deuteronomy 9:1-6; Joshua 1:1-9; Matthew 10:16-20; Acts 23:11; 27:23; 2 Timothy 4: Devotional Reading: The Believer s Advocate, 1 John 2:1. Introduction Intercession is an important role filled by Jesus. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus (1 Tim. 2:5). Jesus stands between the holy God and sinful humanity in the role of an Advocate or Mediator. He takes the petitions sent toward Heaven and appeals to the Father on behalf of those who pray. The word Mediator has the idea of a go-between, one who stands between two parties to speak on behalf of one party. Job saw the need to have one stand in his place with God. He said there was no daysman betwixt us, that might lay his hand upon us both (Job 9:33). The daysman was one who would argue the rightness of a case. Job wanted such a go-between but could not see him. Jesus is the only One who could fill this position. He is the Son of God and the Son of Man. He is fully and eternally God and can always come into the presence of the Father. He is also fully human in that He was born into the physical universe as the son of the virgin Mary. He understands how humans feel because He was man. Being 27
