Beyond Basics Quarterly Theme We Learn about God s People God has called you to Himself to love and serve Him. By accepting through faith the sacrifice of Jesus, you have been redeemed, reconciled and set free from sin. God has saved you for a life of obedience to Him. He is your Creator. He desires to have a relationship with you whom He has created. This relationship starts with your salvation. The Spirit who now dwells within you desires to lead you in a love relationship with the Lord. The central theme of the Bible is that man might have a right relationship with God. This message has been since the creation of man. In the Old Testament God called out Abraham and through his seed God made a nation to call His own. God delivered His people, Israel, out of Egypt where they were in bondage. God brought forth a deliverer in Moses, and through God s mighty and awesome acts He set His people free from the Egyptian s oppression. He called out the people of Israel for a love relationship with Him. He wanted to bless them with a land flowing with milk and honey. It would be through their obedience to Him that they would learn to love Him. There are many Scriptures referring to the deliverance of the people of Israel and the purpose of that deliverance. Please refer to the following Scriptures in Deuteronomy: 4:5-7; 5:6; 6:5, 12-14; 7:6; 11:27, 28; 13:4; 30:20. In time God fulfilled His promise of a coming Savior. Now it is through faith in Jesus that we can come to God. Jesus came to build His church which started when Jesus called out certain men who had been baptized by John to follow Him and be His disciples. New Testament churches are made up of believers who have been scripturally baptized and have entered into covenant with one another as one body in Christ. Likewise, there are many Scriptures in the New Testament that show we belong to God. Please refer to the following Scriptures. John 15:16 Romans 6:19 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20 2 Corinthians 5:17, 18 Galatians 5:1 Ephesians 4:20-24 Philippians 2:13 1 Peter 2:9 How do you begin this love relationship with God once He has chosen you? Learning to love God requires that you spend time with Him in prayer and in the study of His Word. By disciplining yourself to spend time with God on a daily basis, He will guide you into His will. As He guides you into His will, the next step for you is to be obedient in those things in which He is calling you. Train yourself through submission to listen to God and obey Him. You will grow in your love for God. It is His love that He wants you to share with others. Submission to God s will requires prayer, study, obedience and witnessing. 3

Beyond Basics Prayer and study chart June July August It has been discussed in detail in the previous page how important prayer and study is to a child of God. These two things should take place in your life daily. It is not always easy to discipline yourself in this area of your spiritual life, but it is a necessity if you desire to know and understand the will of God. The above charts are intended to help you keep track of your time spent with God. It is easy to get distracted from taking care of your spiritual needs with so many things of the physical world taking your attention. If it will be a help to you, make a copy of it and hang it somewhere so that you will see it every day. When you see the chart and have not yet taken time to pray and study for the day, if at all possible, take the time then. The ideal time for God is in the first hours of the morning. As you seek to have a closer relationship with God, ask Him to give you strength to seek Him in the morning (Psalm 5:3).

Beyond Basics for your inspiration scripture readings You will spend a lot of time looking through the pages of this book getting prepared for each lesson. God s children go through discouraging times, but God has given us hope and peace through the Scriptures. This quarter focuses on obedience to God. If you focus on obedience to lean upon Him, He will guide your heart in the peace and understanding that you are looking for. Psalm 16:9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope. Psalm 31:24 Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the Lord. Psalm 78:7 That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments. Psalm 119:114 Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word. Psalm 119:116 Uphold me according unto thy word, that I may live: and let me not be ashamed of my hope. Psalm 130:5 I wait for the Lord, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope. Romans 5:2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Romans 15:4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. Romans 15:13 Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. 2 Thessalonians 2:16 Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace. Titus 2:13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ. 5

1 Peter 1:21 Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God. Beyond Basics Lesson overview 6 The purpose of Beyond Basics is that the children will have an extended lesson from their Sunday School lesson. Both the Sunday School and Beyond Basics lessons are correlated so that the children will learn about one Bible story each week. The activities that are given in the lessons help the children to grasp the concept of the lesson being taught. These lessons of Beyond Basics start with a quiet time for the children. Remind them what the purpose of coming to church is. In the beginning of the lessons there is a Scripture reading about prayer or praise. Take the time to read these so that the children will learn to see how important it is to pray and give praise to God. God is always waiting and desiring that His children talk to Him. It is true that young children cannot be still for long periods of time. They must be trained (Prov. 22:6). The spiritual training that children learn is the most important training they will receive. Even though it may be hard for them to sit and listen, continue to gently remind them where they are and what they should be doing. Over time the concepts of worship will begin to blossom. Each lesson is divided into eight separate sections, but each section is the same in each lesson. The lessons were designed to take the full hour or so of worship time. If at any time you finish with the lesson early, you should have extra activities set aside for this. Books, puzzles and coloring books will be good quiet time activities for the children. Make sure they are Bible based. Learning about God s Word is the main reason they come to church. They should be saturated with it during worship time. To the Teacher helps you know the background of the Bible story. Take time to read this and the Scripture text that is given for a better understanding of the story. After the children have arrived have prayer requests and prayer. Then, open the class with the Wiggle Buster. This is a game that will help the children learn the basic principle of the lesson. Some Wiggle Busters require acting out the scenes of Bible stories. With the right scenery, the children can come to understand how things were done as the Bible story is explained. The music that is given for each lesson is to help the children worship through song. Children love music. Celebration Praise is what they are doing. They are celebrating the awesome attributes of God through music. Real Life is the Bible story. Each lesson opens with a Scripture reading so that the children can hear the story through the Scriptures. It is important that children learn to pay attention when God s Word is being read and taught. The lesson has activities that will help the children learn about the Scriptures that were read.

Memory Verse activities will help the children learn the Memory Verse. Having God s Word in Me is what the children are learning to do when they learn Scripture. The goal for this is so that the children will be able to say the verse by themselves. Use the Memory Verse chart to help you keep track of their progress. I Made It Myself is a craft that will give the children a visual reminder of the Bible story or the Memory Verse. Every Day with Jesus is a reminder to let the parents know about the lesson and to encourage them to read the daily devotional with their families. The last section is review time. This Wrap Up will bring the lesson to a close. It gives you time to review the Memory Verse and other concepts taught during the lesson. 7

Lesson 1 Lesson 2 Lesson 3 Lesson 4 Listen to God Unit Objective: The children will learn that having a right relationship with God will enable them to listen to Him through prayer, Bible, circumstances and godly counsel. Unit 1 The Message God desires for His children to have a close relationship with Him. His children can seek Him through Bible study and prayer. Through prayer we can acknowledge God for His wonderful attributes. We can lift Him up in praise and thanksgiving for His many blessings. In prayer we can also pray for our needs and the needs of others. When we pray, it shows God that we are trusting in Him through our circumstances and trials. Prayer draws us closer to God and strengthens us in His Spirit. Another important part of our relationship with God is Bible study. Through Bible study we can learn how God wants us to live. The Bible is our instruction book for life. In it there are Scriptures that will uplift us, encourage us, give us hope and show us through examples how God will protect, guide and provide for us. Spending time in God s Word will enable us through the Spirit to overcome weaknesses in the flesh. Bible study is just as important as prayer. It is important to set aside time for both so that we can understand God s will for our lives. When we take the time to establish a relationship with God, He will hear us and help us. God listens to us through our prayers and we can listen to God through His Word. God shows us by the convicting power of the Holy Spirit what might be wrong in our lives or which direction to go. When we are seeking God s will, He will lead us by godly counsel. When we are looking for hope of a promise, He will send someone to encourage us. God desires us to be in His will. If we desire the same, God will lead us by circumstances into His will. It is easy to go astray because we have daily struggles with the flesh. God knows our hearts. Sometimes we might choose to disobey because of lack of trust and faith, but God will bring about situations in our lives to lead us back to Him. Sometimes our obedience to God s will is immediate and other times God must bring situations upon us so that we will submit to His will. The choice is always left up to us. Will we obey or will God have to humble us? Preview In Unit 1 you will learn about two men who were submissive to God s will and God blessed them. They were willing to listen and obey what God wanted. Abraham was the first one we will learn about. God continued to remind him of the promise of a son, and he welcomed three guests one day that were 11

sent by God to tell him of that promise. The second lesson is about a young boy named Samuel who immediately listened and obeyed God s will. There are also two lessons about two men who did not listen to God s will; yet, God brought them around by circumstances. The first lesson is about Balaam and his stubbornness to do things his own way. Balaam continued to seek his way even though God opened up his donkey s mouth to make him talk. Then you learn about Jonah. Jonah was trying to hide from God. God brought about a great storm; yet, protected Jonah by using a big fish. 12 June 1, 2014 Students will learn that God keeps all of His promises. Abraham and Sarah listen to God s messenger. Text: Genesis 18:1-15; 21:1-8 To the Teacher Abraham was a trusted servant of God. When God wanted Abraham to do something, Abraham obeyed. God wanted to bless Abraham and make a great nation of his descendants. The nation was to be Israel, God s chosen people of the Old Testament. Abraham was married to Sarah, and both were of old age. Sarah had never bore any children. Yet, God promised Abraham that his seed would be mighty in number, more than one could count the stars in the heaven (Gen. 15:5). Time went on and the promise of a son was not yet fulfilled. One day while Abraham was resting in the door of his tent, he saw three men approaching and he ran to meet them. The three men were messengers of God (angels) sent to confirm the covenant of a promised son. Abraham showed great kindness and hospitality toward these men. Abraham asked them to stay. They were refreshed with water and rested under the shade of a tree. A meal of bread and meat was prepared for them. While the men were eating and enjoying their rest, one of them said Hear the word of the Lor d. Isaiah 39:5 that Sarah would have a son in the day that the Lord appointed. Sarah overheard this and laughed within her heart, amused to hear that she might have a son at her age. The Lord rebuked her and asked if anything was too hard for the Lord. She denied her laughter but was reminded that the Lord knew she had laughed. The three men rose up and departed from Abraham and Sarah. 13

Getting Started Greet the children as they come in today with a warm smile. Let them know that you are happy to see them and glad they could come to class. Read Deuteronomy 10:21. God should be our praise. That means that we give Him praise for the things that He does. What are some things that God has done? Have prayer requests and prayer. Wiggle Buster (Game) For this activity the children will learn that they can listen better when things around them are quiet or when they are quiet. For this you will need: CD player Music CD It is natural for little children to start talking and playing. If you want their attention so that they will listen to you, it always requires that you make them stop what they are doing so that they will hear what you say. Several times throughout the lessons you will have to stop what you are doing or saying to help them focus on you. Start off this Wiggle Buster by allowing them to talk with each other. Take your focus off them for a few minutes, and they will engage in talking naturally. Then sit down next to them and start reading the Bible out loud to them without getting their attention. Read Isaiah 39:5. Then get their attention and ask whether they heard what you said. It is hard to hear other people when you are talking and not paying attention. Play some music and while the music is being played read the verse again. Stop the music and ask if anyone heard you read the verse. It is hard to hear a person speak when there are other noises going on. Ask them to be quiet and still while you read the verse again. Then ask the question, What are we supposed to hear? God s Word in the Bible. When we are being quiet and listening to what a person is saying, we are hearing him. When we come to church, we should be quiet and listen so that we can hear the Scriptures and learn to love God and follow Him. Celebration Praise (Music) 14 The aim of this unit Celebration Praise is to have children learn songs to teach them how wonderful God is. For this you will need: CD player Beyond Basics CD (Beyond Basics Resource Kit)

Song posters CP1-1, CP1-2 (Beyond Basics Resource Kit) Play both songs for this unit. Play Wonderful Words of Life. Use the song poster as a visual aid to help keep the children s attention. Today s story is about Abraham and three guests who visited him. They reminded him of God s promise. Do you know what that promise was? Real Life (Lesson) For this Real Life the children will learn about one of God s promises and know that they can trust God in the things that He tells us through His Word. For this you will need: Marker board or chalkboard Marker or chalk White paper Crayons Today we have been talking about listening and hearing God s Word. Now it is time for our Bible lesson. Let s sit still and be quiet so that we can hear God s Word being read. For this lesson you will illustrate on the board the contents of the verses that you read. This will help keep the children s attention focused on you and the lesson as they see things being drawn on the board. Help the children open their Bibles to Genesis 18. Read verses 1-3. Abraham was sitting in the door of his tent. Draw a tent and Abraham in the door. Stick figures are okay. Abraham saw three men walking toward his tent. He ran to meet them. Draw three men approaching Abraham s tent. The men whom Abraham saw were angels sent by God to give Abraham a message. Read verses The men asked where Sarah was. Abraham said that she was inside the tent. Sarah could hear the men talking outside. One of them said that Sarah was going to have a son. Draw a baby. Abraham and Sarah were old, but God could still give them a son. This was a promise that God gave to Abraham and Sarah. Soon Sarah had a son, and they named him Isaac. Abraham heard the Word of God, he heard the promise that God told him, and he believed God. A promise is when you tell someone that you are going to do something and you do it. Everything that God has said that He would do, He has. Do you ever tell your parents or friends that you will do something such as clean your room or share a toy? Did you know that God also gave us a promise and He has already done it? God promised us that He would send His Son Jesus to be a sacrifice 15

for our sins. Read John 3:16. Draw a cross on the board. Jesus came and died on the cross so that we might ask for forgiveness, and He could save us from our sins. God loved us so much that the promise that He gave to send His Son He kept. Give each child a piece of paper and crayons. Have each child draw a picture of what God promised He would do for him (a rainbow, a cross or a heart to signify God s love). Have him also draw a picture of doing something that he told someone he would do. Conclusion We have talked today about hearing God s Word. It is important to hear His Word so that we will learn to love and obey God. God has promised many good things to those who hear His Word and obey it. Abraham loved God and believed what He said. Learning the Word You will need: God s Word in Me (Memory Verse) Memory Verse marker MV1-1 (Beyond Basics Resource Book) The Memory Verse for this lesson is Isaiah 39:5, Hear the word of the Lord. Help the children open their Bibles to the verse. Say the verse a few times letting the children repeat it after you. How do we hear? God has given us our ear to hear with. We can hear the Word of the Lord because ours ears hear what it says. There are many things that we can hear with our ears. Some things are noisy and we don t like to hear them. What kinds of noises could that be? Other things are nice to hear. What kinds of things are nice to hear? When we hear something nice, we like to listen. We can listen with our ears. God s Word is something that we can hear and listen to. The Bible tells us of promises that God has for us and that He loves us. When we hear God s Word, that means that we will listen to it and believe what God says. God promised Abraham a son even though he and Sarah were old. Abraham heard the word of God and believed it. Give out Memory Verse marker. Have children put them in their Bibles and show them to their parents at home. 16 In Other Words For this activity the children will learn the verse by memory. For this you will need: Faces/Ear MV1-2 (Beyond Basic Resource Book) Make copies of MV1-2. These will also be used in Wrap Up section. Cut the paper along the line. Cut the ear out. In class give each child an ear and the two faces. God

has given us ears to hear with. Hold up your ear. What must we do so that we are able to hear what the Bible says? We cannot hear if we are talking and not paying attention. Hold up your faces. What does the first mouth show? This mouth is closed. When our mouths are closed this means that we are listening and hearing what others are saying to us. What does the second mouth show? This mouth is open. This mouth shows someone talking. Can we listen to others when we are talking? No, our mouths should be closed so that we can hear. The Memory Verse today says, Hear the word of the Lord. We must be quiet so that we can hear what the Bible teaches us. Have the children cover the mouth that is open with the ear. Help them say the Memory Verse when this mouth is covered. Have the children put the ear on and off the mouth. Each time they put the ear on the mouth help them say the Memory Verse. I Made It Myself (Craft) For this craft project the children will make a reminder to be thankful for ears that help us to hear God s Word. For this you will need: Face C1-1 (Beyond Basics Resource Book) Scissors Glue Construction paper Make copies of C1-1. Cut out the face parts and the words for each child. In class give the children a piece of construction paper and the pieces that will make up a face. God has given us each a beautiful face. He has given each one of us a nose, eyes and mouth. Have the children point to the face parts as you say them. Have them glue the head on the construction paper and then glue the nose, eyes and mouth to make a face. God has also given us two ears. What are our ears for? We can hear with our ears. See whether they can say the Memory Verse. Glue the ears onto the face. Read the words to the children, Thank You, God, for ears so that I can hear your Word. Glue the words toward the bottom of the paper. Every Day with Jesus (Devotional Guide) Make copies of week 1 devotionals. Let the parents know that today s lesson was on the three messengers who came to Abraham to confirm the promise of a son. The children learned that it is important to hear God s Word and to trust in His promises. Encourage the daily readings of the devotionals that families may continue to grow and draw close to the Lord. 17

Wrap Up (Closing) For this review discuss how important it is to hear and listen to the Word of the Lord. For this you will need: Faces/Ear MV1-2 (Beyond Basics Resource Book) Have the children put their hands over their ears. Read a Bible verse softly to them then have them uncover their ears. Did you hear the verse that I was reading? It was hard for you to hear because you had your hands over your ears. Now listen while I read the verse again. Did you hear the verse this time? God wants us to listen and obey His Word. Let s be thankful that God gave us ears so that we can hear. Hand out the faces/ears from MV1-2 again. Point to the picture that shows a mouth open. Can we hear when we are talking with our mouths? Now point to the picture that shows what we do when we are hearing and listening. Have the children take the pictures home. Help the children gather their belongings. Let them know you enjoyed having them in class today. Pray for them throughout the week and pray for any visitors that you might have had. 18
