Introduction In the chapter we are exhorted to love the brethren (vv.1-3); experience victory over sin (vv.4-5); examine the evidence for Christ s credentials; the testimony of the Father and the Spirit the blood and water (vv. 6-12); our assurance of eternal life (v.13) and now we are given guidance in prayer (vv.14-17). John has been answering the question; How do I know that I am born of God? Part of the answer includes My prayers are answered! Remember the saved person believes Jesus is the Christ (vv.1,5); the saved person loves and obeys God (vv.2-4); and now the saved person receives answers to prayer; (and later) the saved person refuses to continue in sin (vv.18-21). In Saudi Arabia, according to Arab custom, reinforced by a 1952 decree of King Abdul Aziz, every subject has the right of access to his ruler whether the ruler is a tribal sheik, a governor, or the monarch himself to hear petitions or complaints or pleas for help. Even the poorest Saudi citizen can approach the sovereign and plead a cause. Crown Prince Fahd speaking about this custom said, Anyone, anyone can come here. That gives them confidence in their government. They know they may look to us for help. Every Christian has the right to approach or greater Monarch the King of Kings. The born again believer has been granted citizen ship in heaven with all the rights and privileges of citizenship. You have access to your King. John wants you to experience the benefits of love. Assurance of salvation; answered prayer; the abiding presence and empowerment of the Holy Spirit. Our Confidence In Prayer (v.14a) 1 John 5:14a (NKJV)14Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything Confidence means boldness or freedom of speech. Our confidence is in Him that is in Christ Jesus the Lord. We pray in faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Prayer should be simple, sincere, persistent, definite. In 1 John we are given repeated confidences; we are confident that we have eternal life (5:13); confident in answered prayer in the will of God (5:14-17); confident of victory over sin (5:18); confident that we belong to God (5:19), confident that Jesus is the Savior and the true God who came down from heaven (see 5:20) One of the most frequently asked questions I receive is why pray? If God knows everything and will act according to His will anyway why pray? The question betrays a kind of naive ignorance of our friendship and fellowship with God. The purpose of prayer isn t simply to ask anything but promote friendship and fellowship with God. Prayer is the means that God has ordained to promote fellowship but also to seek guidance. We are encouraged to pray for ourselves (Matt.14:30; Luke 23:42) and one another (James 5:16). We pray for Pastors, leaders, rulers, our enemies and all men (see 1 Timothy 2:1). In Christ we can ask anything! Does this include wicked things, selfish things, foolish things? 1

Our Correction In Prayer (v.14b)... according to His will, He hears us. But note there are conditions to prayer. One of the gracious limitations is that our prayer be according to His will God s will not the individual will (see John 14:13-14; 15:16; 16:21-24). How do we pray that way? How do we know God s will? The simple answer is that God s Holy Spirit reveals God s will in God s Word. We pray according to what God wants; not necessarily what we demand or desire but in obedience to His commands and to pursue those things that would help us avoid sin. Our prayers are to reflect His desires. We cannot altar the will of God but we can pray in order to discover the will of God and pray in cooperation with His will. Paul speaks of this in Romans 8:26-28; Likewise the Spirit also helps us in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groaning which cannot be uttered. (27) Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. (v.28) And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. We require the Holy Spirit s assistance. Martin Luther wisely wrote; The Holy Ghost has two offices: first the he is a Spirit of grace, that makes God gracious unto us, and receive us as his acceptable children, for Christ s sake. Secondly, he is a Spirit of prayer, that prays for us, and for the whole world, to the end that evil may be turned from us, and that all good may happen to us. John Bunyan famously said; In prayer it is better to have a heart without words than words without a heart. He also said, Prayer opens the heart to God, and it is the means by which the soul, though empty, is filled by God. D.L. Moody wrote; Spread out your petition before God, and then say, Thy will, not mine, be done. The sweetest lesson I have learned in God s school is to let the Lord choose for me. What kind of prayer yields results? Confident or bold prayer (v.14a). Prayer that is consistent with His plan and purposes and will. In communicating with God, therefore, believers do not demand what they want or think they need; rather, they discuss with God what he wants for them. When believers align their prayers to God s will, he hears them, and if (or since) they know that hears their prayers, they can be certain that he will give them a definite answer, Praying in line with God s will is the key 2

to getting whatever believers ask. They should not think they can obtain anything they want in order to benefit themselves. Prayer in line with God s will is prayer for the benefit of God s kingdom, as the next verses (5:16-17) illustrate (see Life Application Commentary p. 116). Are there other boundaries or limitations prescribed by Scripture? Well yes! The Bible invites us to confess our sins. The sweet psalmist of Israel (David) sang; If I regard iniquity in my heart, The Lord will not hear. But certainly God has heard me; He has attended to the voice of my prayer. Blessed be God, Who has not turned away my prayer, Nor His mercy from me (Psalm 66:19-20). We are to be sincere (Matt.6:5) and not insincere. We are to avoid carnal motives, and unbelief (James 1:5-6). Clearly problems at home can also be a source of unanswered prayer. Likewise you husbands, likewise dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered (1 Peter 3:7). What else can serve as obstacles to prayer? Pride. Refusing to submit to Biblical teaching (Proverbs 1:24-28). Turning a blind eye to those who are in need (Proverbs 21:3; and 1 John 3:16-17). But we must not forget the final three words in this sentence; He hears us. Oswald Chambers said as simply as I have ever heard The point of asking is that you may get to know God better. You ask. He hears. Prayer certainly does not inform God but gives us the opportunity to be informed by Him. Our Compassion In Prayer (vv.15-17) 15And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him. Warren Wiersbe rightly points out; John did not write, we shall have the requests, but, we know that we have the requests (1 John 5:15 NASB). The verb is present tense. We may not see the answer to a prayer immediately, but we have inner confidence that God has answered. This confidence or faith, is the evidence of things not seen (Heb.11:1). It is God witnessing to us that He has heard and answered (The Wiersbe Bible Commentary in One Vol. p.1004). We ask. He hears us. Whatever we ask we know (answers) that we have the petitions that we ask of Him. What might these petitions be? Jesus invites us to pray give us this day our daily bread. But it is in the context of a personal relationship with God Our Father in faith who art in heaven in worship hallowed be thy name in expectation thy Kingdom come in submission thy will be done in earth, as it is 3

in heaven. Then comes petition. Relationship, worship, expectation, submission all precede and inform petition. But the Bible is filled with petitions and prayers and we are given permission to pray for ourselves and others. John Newton sang; Thou art coming to a king, Large petitions with thee bring; For his grace and power are such, None can ever ask too much. In the Lord s prayer petition is followed by confession (and forgive us our debts) and compassion (as we forgive our debtors). 16If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin which does not lead to death, he will ask, and He will give him life for those who commit sin not leading to death. There is sin leading to death. I do not say that he should pray about that. What does this passage mean? Once again we are invited to consider the passage in its context. The born again believer receives answers to prayer. The born again believer loves the brethren and the born again believer prays and intercedes for fellow believers. Compassion and care demands that we pray for each other when we fall into sin. Intercessory prayer must be a vital part of the life of the individual and the church. Compassion is the Biblical alternative to blame. I wonder if John may have been thinking about the instructions given by Jesus. We are dependent upon the Lord for deliverance (lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil). Intercession becomes impossible in isolation. The God-honoring prayers of faithful believers help restore the brothers who have fallen into sin and help Christians find a way back into fellowship with God and fellow believers. What does John mean when he says, If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin which does not lead to death, he (the faithful compassionate brother) will ask (pray) and He (God) will give him (the brother sinning a sin which does not lead to death) life. There is sin leading to death. I do not say that he should pray about that. What is a sin that does not lead to death and sin that does lead to death? When John wrote these words his audience apparently understood what he had in mind because John does not elaborate. Several interpretations have been offered to try and help us discern John s words. John may be speaking of specific sins. According to the law of Moses certain sins were punishable by death others required repentance, a sacrifice restitution. In the Roman Catholic tradition there are mortal sins (sins that kill the soul-deadly sins) and venial sins (sins that hinder fellowship and can be pardoned). The New Testament describes sins committed by people in the Church that results in a literal physical death. (Acts 5:1-11; 1 Corinthians 5:5). In 4

Acts 5 we read about the deaths of Ananias and Sapphira who claim to have sold a piece of property but kept part of the proceeds of the sale it was not a sin to keep some of the proceeds but they lied about it. They lied to the Apostles and lied to the Holy Spirit. What is John doing? Is John making a reference to physical death or spiritual death? Another interpretation that is offered is the idea of apostasy so called believers who walk away from the faith or abandon all claims on Christ. Apostasy includes the idea that a person is intellectually persuaded that the claims of Christ and Christianity are true but then somehow change their mind and believe that it is false. Is John calling Christians to pray for those who wander from the faith and some who have wandered far and contrasting them with those who have wandered too far? Or is John asking us to pray for those who might be tempted to abandon faith? Or is John writing about the false teachers who have abandoned essential Christianity (the deity of Christ salvation by grace alone etc)? Did John have any idea how much controversy and differences of opinion his comments would generate? Some have suggested that the sin leading to death is a persistent sin that remains unconfessed. Others have suggested that the sin leading to death is a capital crime and that the person would not think they have permission to escape the consequences since God has already said, whoever sheds man s blood, by man his blood shall be shed. Still others think it may be a reference to the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit or attributing the works of Jesus to Satan. Still others suggest that it is a special form of sin which God visits with summary judgement (think Ananias and Sapphira or Moses and Aaron). What do I think? Let s take the passage at face value. If anyone sees a brother caught up in a sin or a sinful lifestyle or entrenched sin ask him or her to repent. Not only repent but turn to the Lord Jesus Christ for forgiveness and grace and power to live for Christ. Pray to the Lord for them and with them that s God s mercy and grace and power will be made manifest in their life. He will give them life (God will grant life friendship fellowship). But what if they say I am not in sin or mind your own business or you have no right to point out my sin or correct my sin or demand my repentance. John says pray to God. In what sense? It is one thing for me to confront your sin and ask that your recognize it and forsake it but is entirely something else when you are confronted by the God of Heaven by the conviction of the Holy Spirit. You may close your ears and your heart to me. But it will be difficult to close your ears and heart to the incessant urgings and pleadings of God s Holy Spirit to repent of your sin; to turn from your sin; to restore the friendship and fellowship of Christ in your heart. You can ignore me. But the Holy Spirit will be much more difficult to resist and ignore. 5

The missionary Hudson Taylor said, It is possible to move men, through God, by prayer alone. What is the sin leading to death? Is this some sin that will eventually result in the physical destruction of the body? In Jeremiah 7:16 the Lord tells Jeremiah Therefore, pray not thou for this people, neither lift up cry nor prayer for them, neither make intercession to Me; for I will not hear thee. God had made up His mind. Jerusalem and the people of Jerusalem after repeated warnings and pleadings would experience judgment and captivity. What happens to a person who lives in persistent, willful, premeditated sin? Can intercessory prayer postpone judgment? Perhaps. Can intercessory prayer nullify God s Word? I don t think so. What do I mean by that? Can intercessory prayer provide grace for someone who rejects grace? Salvation for the person who bitterly opposes Christ and the gospel? Contrast that with Samuel who said, As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD by failing to pray for you (1 Samuel 12:23). Corrie Ten Boom believed that prayer-less-ness was a sin. 17All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not leading to death. John understands all unrighteousness is sin. Anything less than God s perfections constitute sin. John says there is sin not leading to death. What are to make of this? There are distinct differences in the degrees of sin in what sense? Offense towards God? No. In what sense? Consequence. How do we live free from sin? We abandon those things that are unrighteousness and we embrace those things that are righteous. Being born again places us in a position where we can access the Word of God and the Spirit of God which is the power of God. We have to admit that all unrighteous acts are sin and be willing to forsake sin. Conclusion Someone once said, Prayer moves the hand that moves the world. Do you want your prayer answered? Be confident in the Lord Jesus Christ. Our access to God comes from the merits and mediation of our Savior. Jesus is the only safe ground we are free to stand on. 6
