4 Church of Scotland - Mission and Discipleship Church of Scotland - Mission and Discipleship We are called to take a lead role in promoting an overall focus for mission in Scotland. This reflects the recognition that our whole identity in the church is bound up with our sharing and living out the Good News in our time and place. In all aspects of our work, therefore, we seek to develop an attitude that is outward looking and shaped by the worship of God and the mission imperative of the Gospel. Our second, closely related, priority is to develop and deliver to congregations quality resources to assist their own renewal as communities of nurture, worship and witness. Our Council aims to develop a wholly collaborative approach to our work, both within the Council, in partnership with other Councils and agencies of the Church of Scotland, and with others ecumenically. We look to the future with confidence, and in prayerful dependence on the living Christ. 121 George Street, Edinburgh, EH2 4YN Tel: ext 288 JMcCarthy@cofscotland.org.uk 9 Pilrig Street, Edinburgh Tel: mail@ecm.org.uk Edinburgh City Mission Our aim is to share the love and compassion of Jesus Christ with the people of Edinburgh touching both practical and spiritual needs and working in close co-operation with the churches. Compassion seeks out some of the world s most vulnerable children and through individual sponsors provides them with the means to break the cycle of poverty and create a bright future. Working exclusively through local churches in developing countries, Compassion ensures there is financial integrity, long-term commitment and the opportunity for every child to hear and respond to the good news of Jesus Christ. As a Compassion sponsor your support of just 60p a day will ensure that your child has access to good nutrition, education, healthcare, social and emotional care and spiritual nurturing. As sponsored children grow up with the skills and self confidence they need for the future many go on to great things that positively impact their families and communities. 43 High St, Weybridge, Surrey KT13 8BB Tel: Billing Road, Northampton NN1 5DB Tel: European Christian Mission The primary work of ECM is to establish new churches in Europe - churches that plant other new churches, and help existing churches to develop and reach out by the power of God through evangelism, teaching and discipleship. The mission has developed a church-planting strategy that enables not just incremental growth, but multiplication as emerging churches take on the challenge of church-planting themselves. ECM works in twenty countries across Europe with a purpose of glorifying God and sharing Christ s love. Our vision is that every international student in the UK have a Christian friend, giving them the opportunity to respond to the message of Jesus Christ and return home with the desire and skills to spread the Gospel in their own country and throughout the world. There are currently more than one million international students in the UK, with up to 25,000 coming to Edinburgh each year. Many come from restricted access countries where there are limited opportunities to hear the Gospel. Often they return to positions of influence in government, education or business. International students come to study, but they are also open to learning about local culture and this provides opportunities for Christians to share their faith. Friends International encourages local churches to respond in sensitive ways, seeking to care for people and be respectful of all cultures, while also maintaining a sense of urgency in our task to share the Gospel with the nations. This ministry seeks to make the most of a wonderful opportunity and is too strategic to ignore. Remote places where flying is not a luxury, but a lifeline. For over 50 years, MAF planes have been serving countless thousands of men, women and children, bringing medical care, emergency food, and Christian hope. Serving as the air-arm of the church. Today worldwide, the MAF partnership operates over 130 aircraft from bases in 30 countries. Every three minutes, an MAF plane is taking off or landing somewhere in the world. Enabling the work of aid and development agencies, missions, national churches and other local groups. Carrying their dedicated teams bringing healing and relief for body, mind and spirit. Flying across deserts, jungles, mountains and swamps. Giving hope to far-flung communities which might take days or weeks to reach by land, where roads may be non-existent, or impassable for half the year. MAF also provides communications and logistics services to mission communities. In the UK, MAF is a registered charity funded by voluntary gifts. These gifts help finance MAF s overseas operational work and support services. When you support the work of MAF, you are helping to enable so much benefit to reach those in need. Currently NCF s activities include a number of prayer groups, a quarterly magazine and prayer bulletin, an annual conference and from time to time other events both nationally and locally as seem appropriate. 10 Scottish Counties Evangelistic Movement SIM Scottish Counties Evangelistic Movement Since its inception 40 years ago, the aim of SCEM (Scottish Counties Evangelistic Movement) has been simple - To reach Scotland for Christ. The team member: You, as a SCEM team member will play a key role during your week or fortnight church placement. This can vary greatly as you will be called to use the gifts that God has given you (1 Cor 12: 4-6). Additionally, churches often place different emphases on missions, choosing sometimes to focus on children, young people or older adults. On each mission, SCEM provides a live-in Mum & Dad ( Houseparents ) who are there to look out for all your physical and spiritual needs. A Bible Teacher, who gives relevant, engaging and thought provoking talks from God s word, is also assigned to each mission. Depending on the focus of the mission, there will also be a dedicated Children s or Youth Worker who is responsible for overseeing these vital parts of the mission. Finally, don t worry about eating on mission, you can rest assured that our on site cook will more than look after you. We don t mind if you have little or no experience of mission work. The only thing that we ask is that you are aged 15 or over, and have a living faith in Jesus Christ and a genuine desire to reach Scotland for Christ.
