Info/Church Office Info My Sisters and Brothers, I remember her as the woman from Otter Creek. It is a village of dreams more than reality. Maybe she lived next door to the Walton s, but more probable she lived in my heart, and I only thought I knew her. Perhaps you also know her? She lived in an era when The Katzenjammer Kids was the first American comic strip. H.G. Wells wrote the Invisible Man, and artificial light was just beginning to be used to develop pictures. But this woman from Otter Creek never lived an artificial life. She never lived in a put-on world of anything. She and her family worked their farm, and she understood what it meant to work hard- very hard. They all toiled long hours day in and day out, year in and year out; she and her husband planted the garden, milked the cows, repaired the fences, and did the thousand and one things needed. They did the best they could and stood shoulder to shoulder. They raised their children, and made their house into a home. She remembered her two boys building snow forts and tree houses. She smiled as she thought of their mischief which seemed at the time to be so important to discipline. Now they were memories filed away in her mind. She could open and see them whenever she wished. Even though their life had been difficult; she never lost the twinkle in her eye. It was one of the reasons her husband loved her so much, and that love blossomed into a beautiful bouquet of flowers of different colors, and wonderful fragrances. How fortunate they had been. So, no matter if she were cooking on the wood stove, or canning the vegetables for the family; she kept a song in her heart whose words of love spoke forth brightly from her eyes. The farmhouse itself was set high atop Brown Hill. It had been named for the previous owner Joshua Brown. Next to the house, I can see the whirling windmill which was used to draw water from the well. When working, the water was sweet, cold, and refreshing. When broken; it was a source of aggravation for her husband. Inside the house was a wooden floor. A table and four chairs set in front of the fieldstone fireplace. On the mantel above the fireplace was a proud picture of Grandpa in his Civil War uniform, some toy dolls from her sister, and a small stone with her name written upon it. But like for every person, things changed in Otter Creek. She was now alone as she sat in front of the fire. What seemed like forever now; her husband died. Also, one of her children died. Her other son moved to California. Yet she had learned a great lesson of life even if it took her many years to accept the truth of it: she was not really alone. She understood that her God had been with her in the past, and would be with her in the future. This assurance of God would see her through the days to come. Funny, she thought, I am seeing God in new ways, even now when I am old and gray. He continues to be my rock, my salvation, my savior, and above all; He is my friend. But the Lord is also my companion. We all understand the women from Otter Creek; because we all face challenges and trials in life. We too have memories and ideas. We too work hard and stand together. We too seek God s presence. It is while seeking His companionship that we discover there is a future where we are more than conquerors. The women form Otter Creek. Maybe there is some of her in all of us. Grace and peace, Pastor Gary

The Carillon Page 2 Trustee Notes The past two months the trustees have been reviewing the quote for our stained-glass windows and the wireless security cameras options to ensure our decision will be the most efficient and practical needs for our church at this time. As continued maintenance is needed around the Church, especially in times that warrants the reach of very high places, the trustees decided to purchase a 16ft ladder to keep on hand. At the end of 2016, one of the projector bulbs blew during one of our Sunday Services therefore additional bulb lamps were purchased through the Diaconate s Budget. These bulbs will be replaced soon. The replacement presented itself a challenge with the projector being so high up from the ceiling in the sanctuary and no means to getting to it. Now that we have purchased the 16ft ladder the bulbs will be replaced and pictures will soon be showing more clearly. :) Just recently, the Administrative Assistant s computer crashed leaving the hard drive unrepairable. Our Church was just blessed with 2 replacement computers, several monitors and stands from someone that was willing and able to give them as gifts to our Church. This saved our Church a ton of money. All data was retrieved and moved to the replacement computer with minimum hardship besides the loss of old saved s and the storage of addresses/distribution lists. All current active members and routine communication addresses have been reestablished. The remaining addresses will be recouped overtime. Pastor s computer will be the next to be replaced, well in time, with the recent issues that are starting to present itself. Your Trustees, Betty Poitras Hannah Harrington Rick Staples

The Carillon Page 5 Diaconate Notes The membership and mailing database has been completed and only routine updates are needed when applicable. As noted in the 2016 Annual Report, the sound system is still being looked into for repair. The Console still needs repairs or replacements and will continue to work on getting this completed. We are still looking into video recording the Sunday Services to get them out to the shut-ins or anyone who may want to view the service. Possible post such service videos on our Website as well. We could also make DVDs for those who may not have internet access. Right now, the Sanctuary is presented with a Wi-Fi challenge that is currently being worked on so that we are able to stream and project relevant Christian videos or music from the Internet. With Lent, Palm Sunday and Holy week approaching, we continue to work with the Pastor with our Church Services preparations. Advertising has started by scheduling accouchements on signs, placing on our Website, Facebook page and within this Carillon. Additional items have been created to further evangelize out to the Community through invitation. Your Diaconate, Richard Soucier-Chair Alys Martinson Barbara Denault Jerry Davis Carl DeLuca Irene Lewis

The Carillon Page 6 Pastoral Search Committee Notes The Pastoral Search Committee have undergone a few interviews and has even had an 2nd interview with an applicant. Finding a Pastor/Minister continues to be a slow and meticulous process. We have had some really good candidates to pick and choose from. We are getting closer to the final stages and believe that God has chosen one for us. We will be doing a Pulpit Review at the end of March on one of the applicants. There are a few more steps that we must undergo before we can confidently say that we have found someone. As we ve been asking, please continue to be patient with the Committee as the process does take time, prayer and patience are much needed. We will find the Pastor/Minister God leads us towards but in his time not ours. Respectively submitted by the Pastoral Search Committee, Dick Soucier Barbara Denault Hannah Harrington Carlene Keniston Betty Poitras Sue Jancetic Jerry Davis

The Carillon Page 7 Mission News & Notes It is now the time to focus on the America for Christ Offering. This offering benefits mission work across the United States and Puerto Rico. Our goal is: Your gift for this offering will make life changing impact through ministries and resources that vitalize congregations and communities across the United States and Puerto Rico. It is our job as Christians to share what we have with $ others. This is one opportunity to do just that. Your gift to the America for Christ Offering will make that difference in places like community centers, after school programs within cities, and homes for the homeless. All places where our missionaries are currently spreading the Word. Prayerfully consider how your gift might make a difference in the lives of those that are in need. Missions Committee, Alys Martinson Sue Jancetic

The Carillon Page 12 Women s Bible Study All Women are Still Welcome to Join Us Each Saturday at 10am. Started The Patriarchs: Encountering the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob - by Beth Moore We are currently diving into Genesis with personal studies 5 days a week, which will allow us to discover God's pursuit of a relationship with man, and marvel as His plan to bless all people. This study is full of twists and turns, ruin and redemption, revelation and mystery. We will be exploring concepts such as blessing, covenant, and promise, and the influence each has on a New Testament believer s life in todays world. We will plunge into the heart of Genesis, right into God s remarkable pursuit, of relationship and to the unfolding of His earthly plan: that through one nation and ultimately, one man all people on earth will be blessed. Adult Bible Study All are Welcome!! 5 more Sundays for this great Bible Study. Join us Sundays 9:00-9:45am in Pastor Andy s office. In this study, God s story continues with the intense devotion of his people. Then, be challenged in your life to live as they did by every word that comes from the mouth of God. The video part of the Study filmed on location in Qumran, Machaerus, En Gedi, Jerusalem and Gethsemane, these illuminating "faith lessons" afford a new understanding of the Bible that will ground your convictions and transform your life.

The Carillon Page 15 Lent & Easter Information A forty-day period of penitence and prayer which begins on Ash Wednesday (March 1st this Year) and prepares for the feast of Easter. It is a form of retreat for Christians preparing to celebrate the paschal mystery. It became a forty-day retreat during the 7th century to coincide with the forty days spent by Christ in the desert; before this Lent usually lasted only a week. Every Friday of Lent is a day of abstinence. Fasting probably originated from the custom of fasting by those who were expecting to be baptized after being catechumens. The third, fourth, and fifth Sundays of Lent refer to the process of preparing for baptism. These don t just include abstinence and fasting but also prayers and charitable works. Ash Wednesday is one of the greatest days of penitence. It is noted that penitence will lead one closer to God. People should not become overly involved in the penitence itself, but however, realize that the penitence is in preparation for celebrating the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. March 5th 1st Sunday of Lent, Sunday Service at 10am March 12th - 2nd Sunday of Lent, Sunday Service at 10am March 19th -3rd Sunday of Lent, Sunday Service at 10am March 26th -4th Sunday of Lent, Sunday Service at 10am April 2nd -5th Sunday of Lent, Sunday Service at 10am
