Zambia: Constructing New Churches, a ministry of worship and training Goal: $500,000 over three years "With resources from ELCA, congregations that are disadvantaged will eventually have decent buildings for worship." the Rev. Alfred Chana, senior pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Zambia THE CHURCH: The Zambian church is a young, vibrant church of about 5,600 members in 35 congregations and five preaching points across six provinces of Zambia. THE NEED: Worship is frequently conducted under trees or in makeshift shelters due to the lack of strong, permanent structures. During the rainy season, it is frequently necessary to cancel worship services. The lack of shelter also inhibits fellowship, planning meetings, leadership,
2 Global Church cont... biblical training and, in general, the growth of the church. Development of land previously purchased for a central church center has been blocked. THE OPPORTUNITY: We have the opportunity to change all this in collaboration with our brothers and sisters in Zambia. The ELCA Global Church Sponsorship will provide 15 permanent structures for worship in communities in places designated by the church leadership following indepth assessments. Clergy and lay leaders will gain expertise in construction project management as they are built. These facilities would also provide space for needed training centers to equip pastors, evangelists and lay leaders to carry out the proclamation of the good news. A church center with dedicated space for churchwide administration, training sessions and conferences, group accommodation, and residence by the senior pastor is also envisioned. Land will be acquired. It will serve as a place of spiritual pilgrimage with space for large worship gatherings. THE IMPACT: God's mission in Zambia will be carried out by a church with durable centers for holistic community development scattered throughout the land. GET INVOLVED! This ELCA Global Church Sponsorship priority is a new ministry as part of Always Being Made New: The Campaign for the ELCA. You can help by sharing this information, praying and making a donation. From the Indiana-Kentucky Synod s Bishop... They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him. Mary Magdalene, first report from the empty tomb [John 20:2] She turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus supposing him to be the gardener Mary, weeping outside the tomb [John 20:14-15] Jesus himself came near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. On the road to Emmaus, the first Easter evening [Luke 24:16] New life rises from a stone-closed tomb and it goes unnoticed, unrecognized, unappreciated. The first visitors to the empty tomb assume that the body has been moved or stolen. One of them thinks the just-risen Jesus is the gardener. Others ask the traveling companion who comes up alongside them if he s the only one who doesn t know what awful things happened to Jesus in Jerusalem and it turns out the companion is, in fact, Jesus. This life is so new, so fresh, so unexpected that no one sees it for what it is: world changing, life transforming resurrection. People just like you and me squint at the new life through old lenses, lenses cloud-
3 From the Bishop cont... ed by long-held assumptions and colored by fear, yet rendered obsolete the moment Jesus shed the shroud and left the tomb. We are Easter people. We live on the far side of the resurrection of Christ. We proclaim for seven weeks: Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed! Yet we so often walk through our days as if Jesus were still lingering in the tomb. Resurrection life is afoot in the world and, squinting through old lenses, we so often miss it. Thankfully, this Risen One is persistent. He keeps coming up alongside us to give us new lenses to see the new life he offers. A sip of wine and a bit of bread water and Word washing over us forgiveness offered or received a friend living in recovery day by day a simple sunrise or the complexity of a relationship restored these and so much more are signs of resurrection and new life afoot in the world, so easy to overlook or mistake for something else. In, with, and under the mundane matters of our drudging days the Risen One comes near again and again to speak our name, open our eyes, stir our hearts, take our hands, and lead us out of dark tombs into resurrection light. This Eastertide, may God s Spirit open our eyes wide with wonder to see new life coming near, open our hearts to receive it with hope and joy, and open our hands to share it with all we meet along the way. Christ, our companion, hope for the journey, Bread of compassion, open our eyes. Grant us your vision, set all hearts burning That all creation with you may arise. Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed! +Bishop Bill Gafkjen Synod Assembly... 28th Indiana-Kentucky Synod Assembly June 5-7, 2015 Indianapolis Marriott East Indianapolis, IN The 28th annual assembly of the Indiana- Kentucky Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America will be held Friday, June 5 through Sunday, June 7, 205 at the Indianapolis Marriott East hotel, located in Indianapolis, IN. 4 From the Council President... I'M EXCITED... I'm excited to be able to worship my Lord on Sunday mornings... I'm excited when Pastor so richly feeds my soul with the word... I'm excited to be blessed with receiving of the Sacraments... I'm excited about every opportunity afforded me at Trinity... I'm excited about being a member of the Trinity family... Are you EXCITED also? I hope and pray that you are. In my lifetime I have been a member of many different congregations. Other than the Church I grew up in, I have felt most blessed at Trinity. Being a Church family is not a cliche, we genuinely care for each other as a family member may. The main reason to come to Church is to worship/hear the word/partake of the Sacraments. Being a member of a caring family enhances these opportunities. As with any healthy family there needs to be family time. Time to bond and learn about each other. At the March Church Council meeting we took a look at the year ahead. Noting special days and celebrations for Trinity, we went through and set dates on the calendar for such things as Anniversary Sunday, Service in the Park, Youth Service, Sunday School Christmas service and of course Decembers Budget/Election Voters assembly. Realizing that these are set with our good Lord willing, they are in pencil. These dates will be included in the monthly news letter so that we can plan ahead and accordingly. Feel free to refer to the calendar on the office wall as to what is coming up. With the Fourth of July falling on Saturday this year there is discussion of following the annual firework/cook out with a outdoor movie/camp fire. For the campers among us, perhaps camping out over night if it be in a tent, trailer or on a air mattress in the fellowship hall. Pastor has already laid claim to the Futon in the Youth room. Then on Sunday morning there would be breakfast for both those who stayed and those who may want to come early for Church. Could possibly have service out doors in our yard. Sound like fun? Pastor is hosting the Synod Pastor meeting on May 14th. There may be as many as twenty area Pastors attending. As with any family, having extended family over pushes us to complete those projects that need to be done. We have been blessed with someone having the floor crack in the kitchen/ Fellowship hall repaired along with fixing the carpet in the Youth room. We thank you for your generous contribution. The toilets in the restrooms have been replaced and we're looking to replace the counters and faucets. Should someone/family/group want to adopt a restroom to paint, talk to a Council member. We'll see that you have the paint and supplies that you need. As far as the other things that need to be done we're planning a work day on Saturday, April 25th. On the to do list is painting the Narthex and Kitchen, stripping and waxing the tile floor in the Fellowship Hall, Kitchen and restrooms, as well as outdoor flower bed/ lawn maintenance. Please plan on helping out so that we can impress our guests. Come for as long as you can. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Peters
5 The Zionsville Concert Band, directed & conducted by John Richardson will open their 2015 concert season in the chapel at Hoosier Village, 9875 Cherryleaf Drive in Indianapolis. 7 Trinity Tidings... THANK YOU Church Family, Thank you for all the loving kindness through Ella s many years as a member of Trinity Lutheran. From BBQs, to Sundays in the Park, Pitch-ins, Chili Cook-Offs, Special Services, Christmas Caroling, and so many more that I can t mention them all. The funeral dinner in her honor was very appreciated. Thank you for fixing vegetarian dishes for us, my son was very impressed with the variety of what he could eat, as I was also. Pastor, the service was very nice, my brother-in-law said he did not realize all the connections with church that my mom had until you shared that with us. Mom would have been pleased. CAN-DO Thank you all for taking the time to bring your cans to the church for recycling. Please remember to rinse the cans if you are able and to separate the cans from other types of aluminum. If you do not then the pastor has to do so before the cans can be recycled. To date we have taken in 70 pounds of aluminum & copper that has turned into $30.00 ministry dollars. This money will be used to do ministry in our community. This ministry comes to us in many different forms, and happens in many different ways all guided by the work of the Holy Spirit. Thanks, Thanks, Thanks Ella Myers family MISSION TRIP 2015 This year 24 of our youth and adults will be headed to Copperhill, TN, which lies on the Georgia-Tennessee border, and near the Cohutta Wilderness Area and the Chattahoochee National Forest. We will be doing housing repairs in that area for those in need. If you wish to provide scholarship money for our youth you may do so at any time by placing donations in the Mission Box by the Nail Cross in the Narthex. Any amount is helpful. Make checks out to TLC Youth Ministry. "Children are the hands by which we take hold of heaven." Henry Ward Beecher

12 Thoughts from the Pastor... I think I know what everyone is thinking as we enter into the month of April. I am so tired of winter. I must admit that even though I like the colder temperatures I am ready to put winter to bed. Therefore, its probably a good thing that we begin April with the celebration of the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus. I can t think of a better way to put Winter to bed. The resurrection of Jesus fills our minds and our hearts with visions and dreams of new life. As I look out the window on this sunny and mild April afternoon I can see glimpses of these visions coming true in the new life that is emerging from the ground welcoming us into a new season. Not only in the plants, but in the animals that are scurrying all around us creating safe and comfortable places to birth in pieces of God s continuing creation. If I had my way, Easter would always occur on the first week of April. To me this time of year only enhances my hopes and dreams of my own resurrection as a person connected to Jesus through my Baptism. Recently I have read an article about changes in the church that include strategies for new life in the church. The author discussed that many churches are looking for magic programs that will attract new church members especially ones that are young with children. This seems to be the holy grail of church growth schemes. The articles conclusion is that churches are over programming and creating busier lives, which is not necessarily a good thing. The author argues that many churches are resembling not for profit agencies and losing their focus on what new life means. This doesn't mean that programs for service, study, and youth are not important, but that churches need to go back to what sustained the church in the first place. Worship! Our primary function is to worship the God who first loved us. In worship we become living witnesses to others about how God has loved us and our need for God s love and forgiveness. Our worship style may not be exciting or exuberant enough for some, but it has been the ancient way of slowly shaping our lives so that we are prepared to go into the world to be witnesses to God s love. April begins with the most important faith event of our lives, the Passion and Resurrection of Jesus. Through it we experience God s love at its deepest level. Nothing says New Life more than our worship during this most Holy Week. See you in church! +Pastor Scott
