HOW TO USE THIS BOOK LESSON PREPARATION: 1 Read the lesson Scripture. Review the Life Focus. This is the main theme of the lesson. 2 3 Look at the goals for the lesson steps. These provide a four-step road map for your lesson. Study the Scripture commentary in Encountering God s Word. Take special note of the points of the lesson. You will need to stress these in the last three steps of your lesson presentation. 4 High School Teacher Guide 1
HOW TO USE THIS BOOK LESSON PRESENTATION: 5 Choose which option to use. Each lesson step has two or three activity choices. CHOOSE ONLY ONE for each step. Each option will appeal to a different learning style. Pick the ONE option type that will work best for you. 6 7 Items you will need from High School Student, High School Resources, ENCOUNTER The Magazine, or online are pictured in the margin. Keep the goal of each activity and the transition statement ending each activity in mind as you present the lesson. 8 2 High School Teacher Guide
UNIT 1 UNIT Descriptions of Jesus the Messiah GOAL: As a result of this study, students will gain a better understanding of the descriptions of Jesus found in Isaiah 9:6 and how these attributes affect the lives of those who follow Him. There is perhaps no passage more beautiful than Isaiah 9:6. Here we find the prophet s foretelling of the Messiah the Christ who would take away the sin of the world. Use this unit to help your students celebrate God s fulfilled promise to us. For He shall be called... LESSON 1 Wonderful Counselor From where do we seek advice? Jesus, Wonderful Counselor, cares for each of us, listens to our concerns, and offers advice daily through His Word and His Holy Spirit. LESSON 2 Mighty God When we are in trouble, where do we turn for help? Jesus, Mighty God, is the only real superhero. He is ready to rescue. LESSON 3 Everlasting Father Who cares about us when the rest of the world seems indifferent? Jesus, Everlasting Father, has unending compassion for us. LESSON 4 Prince of Peace How can we conquer stress and conflict? Jesus, Prince of Peace, gives us hope in a world that is always at war. 6 For use in the Spiritual Orphans activity in Lesson 3 on page 21 of High School Teacher Guide. Spiritual Orphans Relationship Junkie Carly came to her best friend, Michelle, in tears. Carly s latest boyfriend had broken up with her. Michelle had heard this story before. In fact, over the past three years, the scene has been repeated five times. Carly habitually dates a boy, allows the relationship to progress too quickly, becomes clingy, and soon drives her boyfriend away. Carly asked, How can I stop making the same mistakes over and over again? Michelle responded. Prodigal Friend Nate grew up in a Christian family. He became a Christian when he was 10 years old and was faithful to Christ for almost 10 years. In the past year, however, he cut all ties with his congregation, moved into his own apartment, began drinking and using drugs, and got into some minor trouble with the law. He wants to return to the church but is afraid that he won t be accepted. Brandon, once his best friend, has been calling a lot lately, but Nate has been screening his calls and not answering. Today, though apprehensive, he picked up when his old Christian friend called. 4 High School Teacher Guide, Encounter Curriculum Permission granted to copy for ministry purposes only not for resale.
Wonderful Counselor Lesson 1 Unit One: Descriptions of Jesus the Messiah Scripture: Isaiah 9:6; 11:1-5 Life Focus: Jesus, the Wonderful Counselor, wants to be the director of our lives. Today s Challenge Where can we get the best advice? Participate in these activities and discover the Wonderful Counselor, whose office is always open and whose guidance is always effective. Step 1 Setting the Stage List places people turn to for wisdom and direction. Step 2 Searching the Word Give three reasons why Jesus is qualified to direct our lives. Step 3 Making It Real Investigate the life of someone who lets Jesus direct him or her today. Step 4 Living It Out Seek Jesus counsel for specific decisions in your life. Pop Psychology TV shows seem to have an abundance of psychologists. From classic sitcoms like the Bob Newhart Show and Frasier to current crime dramas to talk-show docs like Dr. Phil, psych pros are everywhere! For the most part, these purveyors of mental health on the small screen seem to make snap judgments with limited information and no real relationships with their clients. In real life, true counsel comes when counselor and counselee have a relationship of mutual respect. To offer authentic wisdom requires that one knows and is known. Isaiah, by the Spirit, called the Messiah Wonderful Counselor. The Messiah would be more than a king. He would establish a relationship of loving counsel with His own. The Bible gives us three reasons why Jesus is qualified to direct our lives: His authority, His credibility, and His personality. Continued on next page. Hide It in Your Heart The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the LORD and he will delight in the fear of the LORD. He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears. Isaiah 11:2, 3 For a presession or take-home activity, lead kids in memorizing this key verse, using the puzzle found on your High School Resources CD. Isaiah 9:6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 11:1-5 1 A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. 2 The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the LORD 3 and he will delight in the fear of the LORD. He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears; 4 but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked. 5 Righteousness will be his belt and faithfulness the sash around his waist. 8 Encountering God s Word AUTHORITY Isaiah 11:1 When told what to do, we have all thought, What gives you the right to boss me around? We realize, however, that some people parents, teachers, and police, for example do have such authority. They have been given it because of the positions they hold. Isaiah s prophecy makes it clear that Wonderful Counselor, the Messiah, comes to assume a position of authority (Isaiah 9:6). The one who would be Wonderful Counselor was to be a rightful successor to the throne of God s chosen people. He would satisfy and fulfill God s promise that the rule of King David s family would continue forever (2 Samuel 7:16). The Messiah would restore and eternally occupy the throne of David s Jesus is the heir royal family by coming from to David s throne. the stump of Jesse (Isaiah 11:1). Even though the nation of Israel had been divided by civil war like a tree that had been cut down, God would renew the kingdom of David, the son of Jesse. Gabriel came to Mary with the same affirmation. The Lord God will give him [Jesus] the throne of his father David, and... his kingdom will never end (Luke 1:32, 33). Wonderful Counselor would have the right to direct the lives of His people because He would be the legitimate successor of David. Jesus would not be a tyrant but would rule with the compassion also shown by His ancestor David. Jesus would demonstrate the traits of empathy, compassion, and grace. He would love His enemies as David loved Saul and would refuse to raise a sword against them. He would love His friends as brothers, as David loved Jonathan. He would earn the allegiance of His disciples, as David did that of his mighty men, who would both live and die for Him. Like David, Jesus would have authority. But He also would have grace and love like David. What better counselor could one find? CREDIBILITY Isaiah 11:2, 3a In a counselor s office one usually sees a diploma or certificate hanging on the wall. This demonstrates that the counselor is accredited. Note that the words accredited, credentials, credible, etc., all have the same root word, meaning belief. We can believe in a counselor because an even higher authority gave him or her an approved message. Jesus message came from God, Jesus diploma came from not man. the Spirit of the LORD that would rest on him (Isaiah 11:2). John the Baptist identified Jesus as the Messiah when he referred to Him as the man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain (John 1:33, 34). This resulted in a noticeable authority present in Jesus teachings (Matthew 7:28, 29). Jesus was not speaking words He made up, but the words of God, who told Him to say all that I have spoken (John 12:47-49). The Wonderful Counselor received His credentials from God himself. Credentials are important in the professional world. Diplomas, certificates, and licenses decorate the walls of medical doctors, architects, lawyers, psychologists, and teachers. Professor Harold Hill in the movie The Music Man claimed to have a music degree from the Gary (Indiana) Conservatory. But his credentials and his educational method that he labeled the Think System were not to be trusted. They came from his imagination, not from legitimate authority. Wonderful Counselor, in contrast, is no charlatan. He is fully credible because His message came directly from God. PERSONALITY Isaiah 11:3b-5 Schools of counseling have traditionally been divided. Is counseling giving orders, or gently helping another discover truth? Jesus, Wonderful Counselor, would rely on personality over prescription. He would gently build relationships along with giving any necessary commands. He would have divine insight, not simplistic truisms. His concept of righteousness and justice would enable Him to judge with faithfulness (Isaiah 11:4, 5). Matthew described Jesus by referring to Isaiah 42:1-4. Jesus would not quarrel" like a political demagogue (Matthew 12:19). He would not trample His enemies, aggressively assuming power. On the contrary, He would be so gentle that He would not break an already cracked stick while walking over it or extinguish a smoldering candle when passing by it (v. 20). This is not to say that Jesus would be weak, but rather that He would use His great power with sensitivity. When we think of people who have been great influences on us, we recall their personalities. Generally, our greatest influences are not from those who simply dispensed orders, but those who came to know us on a personal level. Jesus, Wonderful Counselor, Jesus rules by the would take that approach, righteous power of according to the prophet. 9 Life Focus: Jesus, the Wonderful Counselor, wants to be the director of our lives. Use either activity on this page to help your students list places people turn to for wisdom and direction. Setting the Stage Step 1 QUICK STEP Dear Abby Allow a few volunteers to read aloud the sample advice columns you brought to class. As a group, evaluate each one and determine which person offered the best advice and which offered the worst. Then ask: What do you look for when seeking someone to counsel you? Would you write to an advice columnist? Why or why not? List some other sources where people seek wisdom and direction. Where would you turn to get advice about the following: what to wear, whom to date, where to go to college, how to prepare for a job interview? Why are those sources reliable for counsel? Would you ask the same person for each question? Why or why not? Lead into Bible study by asking: Is there anyone who gives perfect advice every time? We have seen places people look for wisdom and direction. The prophet Isaiah gives us three reasons why Jesus, above all others, is qualified to direct our lives. discussion 10 minutes sample advice columns One General Rule Cue the video to the line, So, why are you here? In this clip, Lisa reluctantly visits a therapist for advice. Stop the video at the line, Good luck. Discuss either clip with these questions: From where did the main character seek advice? Why was that advice giver qualified or unqualified to give advice? List some other sources where people seek wisdom and direction. Where do you most often seek guidance? Lead into Bible study by asking: We have seen places people look for wisdom and direction. Use either activity on this page to help your students give three reasons why Jesus is qualified to direct their lives. research 20 minutes Bibles, High School Student, dictionary QUICK STEP A Qualified Counselor Divide students into three groups. Turn with them to page 4 in the student books. Give each group one of the research assignments that you find there. Move among the groups as they complete their assignments. Offer help, referring to the commentary from Encountering God s Word when necessary. Reassemble the groups, allowing them to report on their research. Comment to make sure all points are made completely and accurately. Move into the next section of the lesson by saying: Jesus is a reliable counselor. He can help us with legitimate authority, a God-given message, and a gentle hand. Let s examine how listening to Jesus counsel provides real help for a person s life today. writing 20 minutes whiteboard, dry-erase marker, Bibles, paper, pens Scripture Assignments for Acrostic Poetry Group 1 Jesus is heir to David s throne. Isaiah 11:1; 2 Samuel 7:16; Luke 1:32, 33 Group 2 Jesus message was from God, not man. Isaiah 11:2, 3a; John 1:33, 34; 12:47-49 Group 3 Jesus rules by God s Word, not force. Isaiah 11:3b-5; Matthew 12:19, 20 Acrostic Poetry Divide the class into groups of three to five students. Give each group pen and paper and one of the Scripture assignments from the margin, which you can write on the board. Each group should create an acrostic poem that supports its theme statement by summarizing its Bible verses. Each line should be a word or phrase that begins with one of the letters of the word help. As groups work, move among them and help them with their poetry. The commentary found in Encountering God s Word and the following sample poems will help you: Group 1 He comes, Elected by God to Lead David s kingdom and People forever. Group 2 Holy Spirit Empowers Him with the Lord s wisdom and Presence and power. Group 3 His Word alone rules the Earth. He does not Lash out but Persuades and heals. When group work is completed, allow groups to share and explain their poetry. Comment as needed to make sure all points are made clearly and accurately. Move into the next section of the lesson by saying: Jesus is a reliable counselor. He can help us with legitimate authority, a God-given message, and a gentle hand. 11 Life Focus: Jesus, the Wonderful Counselor, wants to be the director of our lives. Use either activity on this page to help your students investigate the life of someone who lets Jesus direct him or her today. Making It Real Step 3 QUICK STEP What to Do? Divide your class into three or more small groups and have them turn to page 5 in the student books. Assign each group one of the scenarios listed there. Groups should come up with a short skit to portray how the people in the settings would act if Jesus were guiding their lives. Assist groups as necessary while they brainstorm. After some time, allow each group to perform. Then ask your students to share examples of the difference they see in people who are living under Jesus guidance. Lead into the final step of the lesson by saying: Does your life indicate that Jesus is directing you? Let s look at some specific decisions we ll have in life and how we can turn to Jesus for advice minutes High School Student drama A Matter of Trust Turn to the article A Matter of Trust in this week s issue of ENCOUNTER The Magazine. Have your students read the article and then talk about the following in small groups (read these questions to the groups): Who was truly guiding Shelby s life at the beginning of this story? What do you think motivated her to make her decisions? What evidence do you see that Shelby had been following Jesus guidance in her life? If Shelby had continued to resist God s promptings, name some short-term and long-term damages that could have resulted. What are some positive results that could happen if she decides to continue to seek more abundant life in Christ? Think of a time you acted like Shelby. Why might it be easier to follow an athletic training program (or a diet or a study plan) than to follow sound spiritual counsel? Gather the groups back together and have each report on the questions. Then lead into the last lesson step by saying: Does your life indicate that Jesus is directing your choices? Let s look at some specific decisions we ll have in life and how we can turn to Jesus for guidance. report 20 minutes ENCOUNTER The Magazine for each student High School Teacher Guide, Unit 1, Lesson 1 9

Use either activity on this page to help your students seek Jesus counsel for specific decisions in their lives. 5 7 minutes High School Student prayer QUICK STEP God as My Guide Turn with students to page 6 of their student books. Ask them to spread out around the room and spend time praying to God according to the items listed on the student page. This activity will allow students to praise God for His authority, confess the times they sinned because they didn t listen to Jesus advice, admit the fears that hold them back from giving God control, and ask for Jesus help in specific decisions they need to make. After some time, gather students back together and close by praying for them and their willingness to turn to Jesus, the Wonderful Counselor, for advice in any situation. Distribute ENCOUNTER The Magazine, if you haven t done so already. object lesson 5 minutes sample horoscopes (or photos of a Magic 8 Ball or Ouija board) Strange Sources for Advice Show a sample horoscope (or photos of a Magic 8 Ball or Ouija board). Ask some teens to explain what horoscopes (or the other items) claim to do. Then say: As we discussed earlier, people turn to some strange places for advice. Can you imagine truly trying to guide your decisions with the help of a stranger (or a strange object) who has never spoken to you and doesn t know anything about your life? Today we ve learned three reasons why Jesus, our Wonderful Counselor, is qualified to offer us advice and guidance in any area of our lives. Now the challenge is to be willing to turn to Him when you ve got questions about life or decisions to make. Are you willing to place your life in His hands? Close in a time of prayer. Begin in silence, allowing students to commit to God their willingness to turn to Jesus, the Wonderful Counselor, for advice in any situation that lies ahead. End with a prayer of your own spoken aloud. Distribute ENCOUNTER The Magazine, if you haven t done so already.
