5 UNIT 1 UNIT Miracles in Mark GOAL: Students will understand how the miraculous power of Jesus can change their lives. This unit studies five of Christ s mighty works. With these lessons you can do more than showcase Jesus power. You can help your students better understand how that power is to be displayed in their own lives. LESSON 1 Breaking Blockades, Healing Lives Just as the man with leprosy was reached by courage and compassion, we can touch others with those attributes of Christ in our lives. LESSON 2 When Storms Come Like the disciples, we may be discouraged when our lives face rough waters. But also like the disciples, we learn more about Jesus power when we go through storms with Him. LESSON 3 A Matter of Life and Death The story of Jairus gives us insights about trusting Jesus in matters of life and death. LESSON 4 Faith Beyond Borders The Syrophoenician woman demonstrated elements of a powerful, life-changing faith. LESSON 5 One Step at a Instead of restoring the sight of a blind man in one step, Jesus illustrated how His work can happen a little at a time in our lives. 6 Anything can be a barrier if you let it. What prevents you from getting to know someone new? Get out of your comfort zone and break the barriers you ve put up. Here are a few ideas. Or come up with your own! 1. Get to know a person at church who is a senior citizen. Sit by the person in the service and invite the person out to lunch. Ask questions to find out about that person s life. 2. Volunteer as a helper in a children s Sunday school class or worship service. Get to know the kids. Be a good role model. 3. Plan an event with your family to get to know your neighbors who live nearby. It could be a cookout or other social event. 4. Participate in an ongoing service project this summer. Your church may have an event you could join. If not, find your own. Look up some local organizations; call and ask what you can do to help them. Take a friend with you. 5. Plan now for ways you can break barriers when school begins. Sit by someone new at lunch. Get to know the people whose lockers are near yours. Meet someone new each day in class. Challenge yourself to talk to people you never would think of becoming friends with. You ll be surprised at the things you ll learn. 7 Breaking Blockades, Lesson 1 Healing Lives Unit One: Miracles in Mark Scripture: Mark 1:40-45 Life Focus: Jesus reaches beyond all barriers to touch lives. Today s Challenge Human beings seem to be experts in breaking up into cliques! These activities will help you deal with the divisive nature we have and how Jesus wants to help us conquer it. Step 1 Setting the Stage Describe social barriers that are difficult to cross. Step 2 Searching the Word Recount the barriers that had to be crossed for the man with leprosy to be healed. Step 3 Making It Real Discuss how social barriers can be broken today. Step 4 Living It Out Commit to breaking through barriers to minister in Jesus name this week. Fenced In In Sister Act, a hit comedy of more than two decades ago, an inner-city church and convent had been surrounded with fences to keep out the crime, vice, and suffering of the decaying community all around. An unlikely character came on the scene and helped the church to remove the barriers and to minister to the hurting people in the area with God s love. It is a great temptation for the church today to develop a siege mentality, building walls to keep from being exposed to darkness and pain. Jesus gives the opposite example. In our lesson today, we see how He broke down existing barriers of isolation, dysfunction, and marginalization in His world to reach out to the hurting. Continued on next page. Hide It in Your Heart Jesus was indignant. He reached out his hand and touched the man. I am willing, he said. Be clean! Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed. Mark 1:41, 42 For a presession or take-home activity, lead kids in memorizing this key verse, using the puzzle found on your High School Resources CD. Mark 1: A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, If you are willing, you can make me clean. 41 Jesus was indignant. He reached out his hand and touched the man. I am willing, he said. Be clean! 42 Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed. 43 Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning: 44 See that you don t tell this to anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them. 45 Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places. Yet the people still came to him from everywhere. High School Teacher, Encounter Curriculum. 8 Encountering God s Word ISOLATION Mark 1:40, 41a In the first chapter of the Gospel of Mark, Jesus was ministering in small villages on the outskirts of Capernaum, a town on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee. There, a man with a severe skin disease approached Him. This disease may or may not have been leprosy as we know it today, but it held dire consequences for those afflicted by it. The afflicted were forced to leave their homes and break off ordinary fellowship with others. They were expected to warn people of their presence by an unkempt appearance and by shouting, Unclean! Unclean! (Leviticus 13:45). As is often the case in our world today, Jesus entered those afflicted and hurting were the man s kept isolated from those in the lonely culture who were healthy and world with whole. compassion The words of the man with and contact. leprosy give us a hint that he was used to this shunning. He did not question Jesus ability to cleanse him. He questioned His willingness to use His power for one such as himself. If we assume that the man gave the customary warning to Jesus, we must assume that Jesus invited him into His presence. Mark tells us that Jesus was filled with compassion for the man. This compassion is expressed by the Greek word splagchnizomai, literally meaning, strengthened from the spleen. Our similar allusion is found in the term gutwrenching. Because Jesus was moved to His depths, He showed His love by doing two startling things: He touched the man and He spoke to the man. Like this sufferer, the hurting of our world are kept at arm s length. We try to avoid eye contact with the homeless panhandler. We want to look away from the scarred, disfigured body of one who survived an accident or crippling disease. But we are wrong when we do so. We, like Jesus, should be moved by their plight and break through the barriers that keep them isolated. DYSFUNCTION (Mark 1:41b, 42) It is important to note that Jesus did more than simply say a kind word to the afflicted man. Breaking the barrier of isolation alone was not enough. Serious Jesus ended the consequences of leprosy man s suffering would remain. with a command In many ways leprosy was and a cure. a living death. Some might suffer from it for decades, as their bodies became increasingly disfigured and hideous. Lack of sensation in the extremities would cause fingers and toes to be injured to the extent that they could be broken off. A man with leprosy needed more than a friend. He needed release from his suffering. Jesus responded, I am willing. Be clean! Those five words changed a life. Immediately, the leprosy was cured. Jesus broke the barrier of dysfunction that had crippled this man for years. The disease and its fruits were gone. It is easy for believers to simply patronize those who suffer. With a superficial visit to a prison, homeless shelter, or nursing home, we may ease the barrier of isolation momentarily. But we fail to address the root of the suffering. James later would chide religious hypocrites who would come upon a person without proper clothing or nutrition and simply say, Keep warm and well fed (James 2:16). Believers must care for physical as well as social needs. We must break the barrier of dysfunction. MARGINALIZATION Mark 1:43-45 A third barrier remained. The man with leprosy was isolated and made dysfunctional by his debilitating disease. Finally, he served no useful purpose in society in his diseased state. He was relegated to the margins of his world. Jesus invited If the man were to return to the man normal life, the law required to join that he go to the priest and offer mainstream prescribed sacrifices (Leviticus society with 14:1-32). Jesus instructed him courage and a commission. to follow the law in this regard. This one-time outcast was commissioned to testify before the religious leadership of the day. He was not to delay by telling others at this point (Mark 1:44). Jesus would give a different warning to a demon-possessed man He healed (5:18, 19). In that case Jesus told the man not to join with Him and His disciples but to go back to his family. Both commands show that Jesus not only heals but also has specific plans for those whom He heals. Every follower of Christ serves a purpose, just as every part of the human body has purpose (1 Corinthians 12:12-20). Our job in ministering to the hurting is not complete until we help them become an active part of society again. We must break the barrier of marginalization. Before he met Jesus, the man with leprosy was lonely, broken, and without purpose. Jesus reached beyond the barriers, addressing each of these problems. May His ministry continue in us as we minister to the hopeless in our world today! High School Teacher, Encounter Curriculum. 9 Life Focus: Jesus reaches beyond all barriers to touch lives. Use either activity on this page to help your students describe social barriers that are difficult to cross. Setting the Stage Step 1 QUICK STEP Opposites Attract? Have the class work in pairs on this quick skit activity. Turn with them to page 4 in the student book and assign each pair a different skit involving opposite personalities. Make sure each scenario is covered at least once. After allowing a minute or two to prepare, have each pair perform. Congratulate them on their creativity. Then lead a discussion with questions such as these: What were some of the issues that divided you and your partner? Name other societal barriers that exist in our world today. Lead into Bible study by saying: Social barriers in the world are created because of fear and prejudice. Today we ll look at a time when Jesus crossed some major social barriers to heal a hurting person. 10 minutes High School Student drama Red Rover Gather the class outside. Divide the class into two equal teams. Have each team form parallel lines about 20 to 30 feet apart, facing each other. Teams should stand holding hands with arms extended. Choose one team to begin play. That team will select a member of the opposing team and call in unison, Red Rover, Red Rover, send [name of opposing player] right over! At that signal, the named player will run toward the calling team, trying to break through the clasped hands of two of the calling team members. Should the player break the handclasp, he returns to his team, bringing as captive one of the two whose link was broken. Otherwise, the player joins the opposing team. Play continues as the sending team becomes the calling team. Play ends when a team has only one remaining player. Return indoors and discuss the game with these questions: Summarize the purpose of this familiar childhood game. (One team creates a barrier, and an opponent tries to break through.) Now looking at this game as an adult, do you see any parallels to real life? (People are constantly building walls to shut others out.) What types of barriers exist between people? (racial barriers, gender gap, generation gap, economic barriers) Lead into Bible study by saying: Social barriers in the world are created because of fear and prejudice. Today we ll look at a time when Jesus crossed some major social barriers to heal a hurting person. 10 minutes none game The Scene For an opening activity based on a current news headline, download The Scene online. 10 Step 2 Searching the Word Life Focus: Jesus reaches beyond all barriers to touch lives. Use one of the following activities to help your students recount the barriers that had to be crossed for the man with leprosy to be healed. research 20 minutes High School Student, Bibles QUICK STEP Seeing All the Cs Divide the class into groups of three to five students. Instruct students to turn to page 5 in their student books. Assign each group one or more blocks of questions to discuss. As groups discuss, move among them to help them with their questions. Encountering God s Word will help you. After questions have been discussed, reassemble the class and have groups share their findings. Comment as necessary to make sure all points are made clearly and accurately. Close by saying: Before he met Jesus, the man with leprosy was lonely, broken, and without purpose. Jesus reached beyond the barriers of isolation, dysfunction, and marginalization with His compassion, commands, and courage. How can the church build similar bridges today? art 20 minutes Bibles, poster board, markers, High School Resources Sheet 1 (or High School Resources CD, projection equipment) Bridge Builders, Inc. Let students get into groups of three or four. Make sure each group has Bibles, a poster board, and markers. Introduce this activity by saying: We have mentioned barriers in our world that separate people from each other. Imagine that there is a company called Bridge Builders, Inc., that constructs bridges over those barriers. The company is owned and operated by Jesus, and a sample of its work is found in Mark 1: Your group will read that story and create an advertising poster for this company. As students work move from group to group, helping them complete their assignment. Suggest that their ad include the kind of barriers Jesus bridged and the methods He used to bridge them. Refer to Encountering God s Word as necessary. When posters are complete, allow groups to explain their work. Post our artist s response to this same assignment (Sheet 1); or project it from the CD. Make sure all main points from the lesson text are clearly explained. Close by saying: Before he met Jesus, the man with leprosy was lonely, broken, and without purpose. Jesus reached beyond the barriers of isolation, dysfunction, and marginalization with His compassion, commands, and courage. How can the church build similar bridges today? 8 Breaking Blockades, Healing Lives, Lesson 1
11 Life Focus: Jesus reaches beyond all barriers to touch lives. Use one of the following activities to help your students discuss how social barriers can be broken today. Making It Real Step 3 QUICK STEP Across a Sea of Compassion Turn with students to the case study found on page 6 of their student books. Use the following questions to help students (as a class or in small groups) report on the ministry of Mark and Pauline Maxey: How did the Maxeys break the barrier of isolation for those in the Hoshizuka Keiaien Sanatorium? If medicine can treat leprosy today, what dysfunction exists that still results in isolation of this or a similar kind? If humankind s problem is not medical at its root, what is our basic problem? When the Maxeys retired, what did they do to see that their ministry would continue? Name a group of people in the United States who are treated poorly and shunned from mainstream society. How can Christians help break down the barriers that keep such people isolated? Move into the final step of the lesson with these words: Let s get personal and look at our own lives. Are we actively crossing barriers in order to reach people in need? 20 minutes High School Student report An Event to Cross Barriers Allow your students to work with a partner or two on this activity to help them see how barriers in their own communities can be overcome. Students will be doing this by planning events designed to break down specific social barriers. They should use what they learned in Bible study about Jesus actions toward the man with leprosy who was an outcast in his society. First, groups must pick a social barrier that keeps people apart this could be a social barrier at school, at church, or in the community as a whole. Then they should identify a type of event that could be held at school, at church, or in the community to help people overcome that barrier. They should figure out what activities would bring people together, educate people, and help people heal. Walk around and help the groups with their ideas. Encourage them to think of their specific community and what it would take to challenge people s behavior. After some time, allow each group to present its idea. Discuss which ideas could possibly be put into practice by your group. Move into the final step of the lesson with these words: Let s get personal and look at our own lives. Are we actively crossing barriers in order to reach people in need? 20 minutes paper, pens creative writing High School Teacher, Unit 1, Lesson 1 9

Use one of the following activities to help your students commit to breaking through barriers to minister in Jesus name this week. self-evaluation 10 minutes copies of p. 4 of this book, whiteboard, dry-erase marker QUICK STEP Breaking Down Your Barriers Distribute copies of page 4 of this book to your students. Read together the list of challenges students may try in order to cross social barriers this week. Encourage your students to brainstorm other ideas to add to the list. Write those on the board. Allow volunteers to share which challenges they want to try this week. Spend a few minutes in silent prayer, allowing students to commit more fully to crossing barriers to touch lives. Close in your own prayer aloud. Distribute ENCOUNTER The Magazine. prayer 10 minutes ENCOUNTER The Magazine The Invisible Kid Distribute this week s issue of ENCOUNTER The Magazine. Have your students read the article, The Invisible Kid. Ask students to close their eyes while you ask: Think about your school or your neighborhood. Who is the kid that everyone else treats as invisible? Perhaps he has autism like Avery in this story. Perhaps she is socially awkward. Maybe he tries too hard to fit in. Maybe she s angry and pushes everyone away. There s someone you know who has a social barrier set up against him or her for one reason or another. Spend a few minutes now asking God for the courage to take one step in crossing that barrier this week. Close the prayer time by praying aloud, asking God to help your group approach all people across all barriers with the compassion of Christ this week.
