HOW TO USE THIS BOOK LESSON PREPARATION: 1 Read the lesson Scripture. Review the Life Focus. This is the main theme of the lesson. 2 3 Look at the goals for the lesson steps. These provide a four-step road map for your lesson. Study the Scripture commentary in Encountering God s Word. Take special note of the points of the lesson. You will need to stress these in the last three steps of your lesson presentation. 4 Young Teen Teacher 1
HOW TO USE THIS BOOK LESSON PRESENTATION: 5 Choose which option to use. Each lesson step has two or three activity choices. CHOOSE ONLY ONE for each step. Each option will appeal to a different learning style. Pick the ONE option type that will work best for you. 6 7 Items you will need from Young Teen Student, Young Teen Resources, ENCOUNTER The Magazine, or online are pictured in the margin. Keep the goal of each activity and the transition statement ending each activity in mind as you present the lesson. 8 2 Young Teen Teacher
UNIT 1 UNIT Miracles in Matthew GOAL: Students will understand that they can turn to Jesus with their needs, big or small, and they won t be disappointed. They will be challenged to respond gratefully with genuine obedience. Isn t it surprising? Even though the disciples had witnessed dozens of miracles performed by Jesus, each time they witnessed one they were dumbfounded. It seems as though nothing should have shocked them after seeing the supernatural, but still they struggled with their lack of faith. Often we are guilty of the same stubborn doubt. We have experienced His goodness in providing for us and always seeing us through tough times, but when a crisis comes along, we are forgetful. This unit attempts to teach teens the power of Christ, His loyalty toward friends, and the importance of a fruitful faith. When we put our trust in Jesus, we won t be disappointed. LESSON 1 HEAVENLY HELP In this study, students will consider how they approach God for help. They will see how God can t wait to respond to requests humbly made in faith. LESSON 2 SUPERSIZED LUNCH Teens will understand how Christ s compassion motivated Him to reach out to people. As they apply this to their own lives, they will search for new ways to care about the people around them. LESSON 3 FOUL-WEATHER FAITH Students will learn about ways Jesus responds to their doubt and uncertainty. Jesus can be trusted. LESSON 4 THE FISHERMAN KING This unusual account helps us to refocus our attention and see who Jesus really is. He is far more than a wise man or religious teacher! LESSON 5 SINCERELY HIS In this study, teens will consider what it means to be genuine. They will evaluate whether or not their Christianity is more than words and will be challenged to strive always to be real. 7 Heavenly Help Lesson 1 Unit One: Miracles in Matthew Scripture: Matthew 8:5-13 Life Focus: Living by faith is the best way to live. Today s Challenge We all need help now and then! Participate in these activities to see what we need, who provides it, and how we seek it. Step 1 Setting the Stage Discuss the importance of knowing where to get help. Step 2 Searching the Word Examine the attitudes that allowed the centurion to seek help from Jesus. Step 3 Making It Real Compare the attitudes of the centurion with the way that contemporary people seek help from God. Step 4 Living It Out Evaluate the way you approach God for help. Help Needed The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was founded on April 4, 1949, when 12 nations Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, and the United States signed a treaty of military and economic cooperation. The heart of the agreement was the pledge that an armed attack against one or more of them... shall be considered an attack against them all. The common enemy of those nations at the time was the Soviet Union. But not so long ago, Russia (formerly the head of the Soviet Union) joined forces with NATO, its former enemies. In times of uncertainty, nations and people cry out to others for help. Early in Jesus ministry something similar happened. A member of the army occupying the Jewish homeland needed help. He turned to Jesus, a Jew, for that help! His cry for help was marked by a call, a confession, and confidence. Continued on next page. Hide It in Your Heart He replied, Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, Move from here to there, and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you. Matthew 17:20 For a presession or take-home activity, lead kids in memorizing this key verse, using the puzzle found on your Young Teen Resources CD. Matthew 8: When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. 6 Lord, he said, my servant lies at home paralyzed, suffering terribly. 7 Jesus said to him, Shall I come and heal him? 8 The centurion replied, Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, Go, and he goes; and that one, Come, and he comes. I say to my servant, Do this, and he does it. 10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. 11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. 12 But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would. And his servant was healed at that moment. Young Teen Teacher, Encounter Curriculum. 8 Encountering God s Word CALL Matthew 8:5, 6 It was a day of surprises. When Jesus entered Capernaum, a fishing village on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, a centurion asked Him for help. A centurion was a Roman military commander over 100 soldiers. The request was surprising, because Roman commanders didn t ask Jews for help they demanded it! The centurion s problem was that one of his servants was paralyzed and in terrible suffering. Another account added that the servant was about to die (Luke 7:2). It was unusual that the centurion cared The centurion so much about the health of a asked Jesus to help. mere servant. Servants could be bought and sold with relative ease, but this was a centurion with a heart. The centurion was such a good-hearted man, in fact, that he loved the nation of Israel and had built a synagogue for the people there in Capernaum (v. 5). Therefore, the local Jewish leaders urged Jesus to grant the centurion s request. The centurion illustrated the first step in getting heavenly help just ask! That is not as easy as it sounds. The centurion was an enemy of God s people and in a position of temporal power. Similarly, people in rebellion against God today do not have, because [they] do not ask God (James 4:2). Yet Jesus desires that those who stand in unity with Him ask (John 15:7). CONFESSION Matthew 8:7-9 Another surprise came when the centurion counted his home unworthy of a visit from Jesus. With unexpected humility the centurion said, Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof (Matthew 8:8). With surprising faith the centurion also said, But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. He recognized that Jesus was a man of authority like himself who could give an order that The centurion admitted that he would be obeyed even was unworthy. from a distance. We should note also that it was considerate of the centurion to allow Jesus to avoid entering his home. The rabbinical law emphasized that any Jew who entered a Gentile s house became defiled (John 18:28). This is the second step in finding heavenly help. We do not deserve God s favor. Rather, like this Gentile soldier, we are declared enemies of God. We are, as the Bible says, deserving of wrath (Ephesians 2:3). The only appropriate approach to God is to recognize our unworthiness before Him. Isaiah called himself a man of unclean lips (Isaiah 6:5). The tax collector in Jesus parable cried out, God, have mercy on me, a sinner (Luke 18:13). Jesus went so far as to say that even if we did everything God wanted us to, we still would be unworthy of asking a favor, since we had only done our duty in obeying the one who created us (17:10). John Newton, the author of Amazing Grace, recognized his unworthiness before God. Newton wrote the following epitaph for his tombstone: John Newton, once an infidel and libertine, a servant of slaves in Africa, was, by the rich mercy of our Lord and Saviour JESUS CHRIST, restored, pardoned, and appointed to preach the Gospel which he had long laboured to destroy. Newton, like the centurion in this incident, recognized that a repentant, humble heart was required for seeking heavenly help. CONFIDENCE Matthew 8:10-13 When Jesus heard all that the centurion had said, He was astonished (Matthew 8:10). Here was a Gentile, a coarse Roman soldier, who had more faith in Him than the people of Israel did! The centurion demonstrated that faith in more than passive mental assent. This man s faith was a sincere trust that Jesus could do what He claimed to be able to do. The centurion s faith was a bold confidence in what he hoped for and an assurance about what [he did] not see (Hebrews 11:1). Then Jesus said something surprising. The day was coming when people from all over the world Gentiles would come and sit at God s feast in the kingdom of Heaven, right along with Abraham, Isaac, The centurion and Jacob (Matthew 8:11). believed that Jesus This would happen initially had the power to in the church and ultimately meet his needs. in Heaven itself. This confidence is the third step in seeking help from God. Anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him (Hebrews 11:6). While Jesus no longer walks on earth, performing miracles, He can still answer our requests. He and the Father are eager to meet our needs (Philippians 4:19). We just need to learn to be more like the centurion. We need to cry out to the Lord, with complete humility and simple, trusting faith. Young Teen Teacher, Encounter Curriculum. 9 Life Focus: Living by faith is the best way to live. Use either activity on this page to help your students discuss the importance of knowing where to get help. Setting the Stage Step 1 QUICK STEP What If... Post Sheet 1 (or digitally project it from the CD). The poster shows humorous illustrations of people offering help in areas in which they are unqualified to do so. Discuss each picture and why it seems absurd by asking: What s wrong with these people offering help? Why is it important to know where to go for help? Sometimes in our own lives we seek help from completely inappropriate people and find they were really no help at all. Name a time when someone gave you bad advice. Describe the sort of person you seek out when you need something. How do you determine whether a person is trustworthy and capable of helping you? Lead into Bible study by saying: Knowing where to go when we need help is more important than we may realize. Today we ll learn about an important man who knew that Jesus was the only person who could help him with his need. discussion 10 minutes Young Teen Resources Sheet 1 (or Young Teen Resources CD, projection equipment) Identity Crisis Before class, make copies of page 4 in this book and cut the boxed clues into individual slips. Give each teen a slip, making sure it is seen by that person alone. (Make sure each slip you hand out has its match distributed to someone else in the group. If you have an odd number of students, join in on the activity yourself!) Explain to students that they must pantomime the role on their papers. Without speaking, they must act out their role and either find the person who can help their problem or find the person whose problem they can solve. Stop the game after several minutes and see whether teens were able to locate their matches. Say: Describe the sort of person you seek out when you need something. How do you determine whether a person is trustworthy and capable of helping you? Lead into Bible study by saying: Knowing where to go when we need help is more important than we may realize. 10 Step 2 Searching the Word Life Focus: Living by faith is the best way to live. Use one of the following activities to help your students examine the attitudes that allowed the centurion to seek help from Jesus. quiz 20 minutes Young Teen Student, Bibles, pens QUICK STEP Jesus:help Divide the class into groups of three to five students. Turn with groups to page 4 in the student books and ask them to complete the computer help menu found there. They are to read Matthew 8:5-13 and match the portions of the lesson Scripture in the left-hand column to the directions for coming to Jesus for help. Then they should complete each section of the menu by summarizing the portion of the story found in each section of the lesson text. As groups work, move among them to offer help as needed. Encountering God s Word will help you. Lead into the next section of the lesson with these words: Early in Jesus ministry a member of the army occupying the Jewish homeland needed help. We have learned that his cry for help was marked by a call, a confession, and confidence. Let s examine how those same attitudes appear when people today seek help from God. research 20 minutes Young Teen Student, pens, Bibles Cross References Turn with your class to the printed lesson text on page 3 in the student book. Make sure each student has a pen and a Bible. Lead the class in a Scripture-marking activity with the following words: Circle the last three words in verse 5 ( asking for help ). In the margin by this circle, write these Scripture references: Matthew 7:7, 8; James 4:2b, 3. What do all these verses say about the first step in getting help from God? Circle the first five words of the centurion s reply to Jesus ( Lord, I do not deserve ). In the margin by this circle, write these Scripture references: Isaiah 6:5; Luke 17:10. What do all these verses say about a crucial attitude to have when seeking help from God? Circle the last six words of Jesus final statement to the centurion in verse 13 ( just as you believed it would ). In the margin by this circle, write these Scripture references: Hebrews 11:1; 1 John 3:21, 22. What do all these verses say about another crucial attitude to have when seeking help from God? Review the three main points from Encountering God s Word. Lead into the next section of the lesson with these words: Early in Jesus ministry a member of the army occupying the Jewish homeland needed help. We have learned that his cry for help was marked by a call, a confession, and confidence. Let s examine how those same attitudes appear when people today seek help from God. 8 Heavenly Help, Lesson 1
Life Focus: Living by faith is the best way to live. Use one of the following activities to help your students compare the attitudes of the centurion with the way contemporary people seek help from God. Making It Real Step 3 QUICK STEP The Invisible Kid Distribute this week s issue of ENCOUNTER The Magazine. Together, read the story The Invisible Kid. After you finish, discuss the article with questions such as these: In today s Bible study, we looked at three attitudes the centurion had when he asked for help from Jesus. Look at Evan s attitude about seeking help in trying to talk to Avery. How does Evan s attitude compare to the centurion s attitude toward seeking help? How did God get Evan s attention to what he needed to do? Evan recalled that Avery s mom had given advice on how to communicate with her son. How might things have been different if Evan had asked for help earlier in trying to talk to Avery? Then lead into the last lesson step by saying: What about us? Do we approach Jesus for help like the centurion did? report 20 minutes ENCOUNTER The Magazine for each student What Happens Next? Divide your students into three groups and have them turn to page 5 in their student books. Assign one scenario to each group. These scenarios are modern-day examples of the centurion s attitude when he asked Jesus for help. Write the main points of today s Encountering God s Word on the board for your students reference as they work. Groups should first identify from today s Bible study which main point their scenario corresponds with. (See margin for details.) Then they should write an ending to the story. What happens next? How will the people in their scenarios find help from God? What will be the results of their decisions? Walk around and assist the groups as they work. After some time, allow each group to share its story. Then lead into the last lesson step by saying: What about us? Do we approach Jesus like the centurion did? 20 minutes creative writing Young Teen Student, paper, pens, whiteboard dry-erase marker Song Suggestion To help your students reflect on the application of today s lesson, play the song Oh How I Need You by All Sons & Daughters from their album The Longing. Use the lyrics to discuss the way people are seeking help from God in the song, compared to the way the centurion sought help from Jesus. (The song and official video are available online.) Scenario Tip If your students need help figuring out which person goes with which of today s main points, here is the breakdown: Tara=confidence Spencer=confession Brett=call Young Teen Teacher, Unit 1, Lesson 1 9
Step 4 Living It Out Life Focus: Living by faith is the best way to live. Use one of the following activities to help your students evaluate the way they approach God for help. 10 minutes Young Teen Student self-evaluation QUICK STEP What Species Are You? To get your students thinking about the way they approach God for help, have them turn to page 6 in the student book to the activity titled What Species Are You? Give them a few minutes to read the animal descriptions there and choose which best describes the way they approach God. After a few minutes, allow volunteers to share their answers and why they chose those animals. Ask: What holds us back from approaching God for help? Who do we often look to for help before we seek God? How can you rely on God more in the days to come? Close your time in a group prayer. Distribute ENCOUNTER The Magazine if you haven t done so already. 10 minutes Bible prayer Seeing and Believing This prayer activity involves picturing today s Bible story. Ask your students to close their eyes as you read today s Scripture, Matthew 8:5-13. Read it once and have them imagine they are there. They should keep their eyes closed as you read it through again. But this time, stop at the sections indicated below and ask the questions listed. Give students time to think about each one. Read verses 5-7: Imagine you re the centurion. How does it feel to be a person in power and yet needing to ask someone for help? Read verses 8-10: Imagine you re a bystander. What do you think when the centurion asks Jesus just to speak and the servant would be healed? Read verses 11-13: Imagine you are a Pharisee. How does it feel to know that Jesus loves non-jews as much as He loves you? How does it feel to see a Gentile trust that Jesus is God and humbly ask for help? Finally, ask your students to think about their own lives: Is asking for help from anyone, even God, hard for you? Tell God your hesitation. Do you have faith that Jesus can do anything? What does your faith look like? Do you think you deserve God s help, or think you re unworthy? How can you be humble yet also trust that God wants to help you? Distribute ENCOUNTER The Magazine if you haven t done so already.
