5 UNIT 1 UNIT Descriptions of Jesus the Messiah GOAL: As a result of this study, students will gain a better understanding of the descriptions of Jesus found in Isaiah 9:6 and how these attributes affect the lives of those who follow Him. There is perhaps no passage more beautiful than Isaiah 9:6. Here we find the prophet s foretelling of the Messiah the Christ, who would take away the sin of the world. Use this unit to help your students celebrate God s fulfilled promise to us. For He shall be called... LESSON 1 Wonderful Counselor From where do we seek advice? Jesus, Wonderful Counselor, cares for each of us, listens to our concerns, and offers advice daily through His Word and His Holy Spirit. LESSON 2 Mighty God When we are in trouble, where do we turn for help? Jesus, Mighty God, is the only real superhero. He is ready to rescue. LESSON 3 Everlasting Father Who cares about us when the rest of the world seems indifferent? Jesus, Everlasting Father, has unending compassion for us. LESSON 4 Prince of Peace How can we conquer stress and conflict? Jesus, Prince of Peace, gives us hope in a world that is always at war. 7 Wonderful Counselor Lesson 1 Unit One: Descriptions of Jesus the Messiah Scripture: Isaiah 9:6; Luke 4:31-37 Life Focus: Jesus, the Wonderful Counselor, wants to be the director of our lives. Today s Challenge Where can we get the best advice? Participate in these activities and discover the Wonderful Counselor whose office is always open and whose guidance is always effective. Step 1 Setting the Stage List places people turn to for wisdom and direction. Step 2 Searching the Word Give three reasons why Jesus is qualified to direct your life. Step 3 Making It Real Investigate the life of someone who lets Jesus direct him or her today. Step 4 Living It Out Seek Jesus counsel for making specific decisions in your life. Four Decades of Advice Known to the public as Ann Landers, Esther Pauline Friedman Lederer offered advice for over 40 years to millions of readers. Her frank and humorous replies caused many to open their newspapers to her column. One out of four people in this country is mentally unbalanced, Landers once wrote. Think of your three closest friends; if they seem OK, then you re the one. In a more serious tone she advised, Opportunities are usually disguised as hard work, so most people don t recognize them and The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good. While advice columnists may be entertaining and occasionally insightful, are they the best place to seek direction for one s life? The prophet Isaiah spoke of one who would be the ultimate guide, the Wonderful Counselor. Jesus is qualified to direct our lives because of His right, His recognition, and His results. Continued on next page. Hide It in Your Heart For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. Isaiah 9:6 For a presession or take-home activity, lead kids in memorizing this key verse, using the puzzle found on your Young Teen Resources CD. Isaiah 9:6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Luke 4: Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people. 32 They were amazed at his teaching, because his words had authority. 33 In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, 34 Go away! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are the Holy One of God! 35 Be quiet! Jesus said sternly. Come out of him! Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him. 36 All the people were amazed and said to each other, What words these are! With authority and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out! 37 And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area. Young Teen Teacher Guide, Encounter Curriculum. 8 Encountering God s Word RIGHT Luke 4:31, 32 When we go into a counselor s office, we hope to find framed diplomas and certificates. We want to know that our counselor got his or her education and training from a reliable source. Early in Jesus ministry He came to Capernaum, a town in Galilee. In the course of His teaching there, the crowds immediately accepted His message as credible. Why? It was obvious to them that his words had authority (Luke 4:31, 32). They had heard rabbis teach at the synagogue and saw no comparison. Surely someone who taught this way had Jesus is a reliable the proper credentials advice giver because His words behind Him. have the authority Very similar words are of God himself. used to describe crowd reaction to Jesus Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5 7). Amazement overcame Jesus hearers because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law (7:28, 29). The reason for this obvious difference between Jesus teaching and that of His contemporaries is explained near the end of His ministry. Jesus made it clear that He was not an orator building a reputation for himself. Rather, He was an ambassador, bringing an approved message from His Father in Heaven. For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me to say all that I have spoken (John 12:49). Some time ago, Barry Lichenthal and his wife, psychiatrist Liane Leedom, were arrested. Leedom allegedly led her patients to believe that Lichenthal was a licensed doctor, then referred them to his care. The lack of proper credentials can put a person in prison. Jesus, however, demonstrated that He had the highest certification possible. He taught the very message of the Creator of the universe. RECOGNITION Luke 4:33, 34 Another way to find a competent counselor is to listen to what his or her clients say. Who better to judge than one who was treated by that counselor? In Capernaum, a man possessed of an evil spirit approached Jesus (Luke 4:33). This man issued a very strange but very believable Jesus is a reliable recommendation about the advice giver Wonderful Counselor. I know even demons who you are, the possessed knew and man screamed, the Holy One feared Him. of God! (v. 34). Throughout the Gospels, we find the same sort of recommendations. Those who would receive help from Jesus testified as to His position. When Jesus entered the region of the Gerasenes, a very disturbed man met him. This demoniac, like the one in Capernaum, knew the identity of the Savior. He fell on his knees and addressed Jesus as the Son of God (Mark 5:1-7). After being released from his affliction, the man would go home and testify to others about the remarkable power of the Christ (vv. 19, 20). Near the end of Jesus ministry, Jesus met two blind men sitting on the road from Jericho. These two men asked for help, well aware of whom they asked. Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us! (Matthew 20:29-34). The online auction site, ebay, has developed a way in which customers can know which online sellers are reliable and which are not. After a transaction is complete, buyers are always asked to evaluate their experience. The results are tabulated, and that feedback score is displayed whenever the seller has an item for sale. By seeing the percentage of satisfied customers, an ebay customer can choose reliable merchants. Jesus had nothing to sell, but according to the biblical accounts, He would have had a very high feedback score! RESULTS Luke 4:35-37 A counselor is not chosen only by credentials and reputation. His or her success rate should also be considered. Jesus, Wonderful Counselor, showed himself qualified in that way as well. To the demoniac of Capernaum, Jesus gave two simple commands: Be quiet! and Come out of him! (Luke 4:35). The results were total and immediate. Jesus is a reliable As a result, those who had advice giver been amazed by Jesus words because He were even more amazed by produces results. His actions. Tongues began to wag, and the reputation of the Savior quickly spread (vv. 36, 37). This continued throughout Jesus ministry. Years after the Capernaum incident, some of Jesus disciples encountered a demon-possessed young boy (Mark 9:14-18). Although they had successfully cast out demons in the past (6:13), they were unsuccessful in this case. Jesus strengthened the faith of observers by healing the boy (9:19-27). On another occasion, Jesus restored sight to a man born blind. Though the religious establishment tried to explain away the miracle, they could not. Such an unheard-of miracle convinced more people that Jesus was uniquely sent from God (John 9:30-33). Before Ann Landers, before Dear Abby, and before Dr. Phil, a Wonderful Counselor walked this earth. Jesus spoke words that were obviously from God, was recognized by those He treated as powerful, and consistently produced positive results. Who is better qualified to direct our lives today? 9 Setting the Stage Step 1 Life Focus: Jesus, the Wonderful Counselor, wants to be the director of our lives. Use ONE of the following activities to help your students list places people turn to for wisdom and direction. QUICK STEP Unfinished Advice This activity is like the Mad Libs game, in which people pick random words and then place them into a story to read the funny results. Before class, copy page 4 of this book for each student. As students arrive, have them turn to page 4 in their student books to Unfinished Advice and create the word list. After all students have completed their lists, give each student a copy of the story from page 4 of this book and let them read it, inserting their words in the corresponding spots. Allow several volunteers to share their results. Discuss: Did your random word choices turn into good advice? Do you read advice columns? Why or why not? Have you ever read a real advice column that offered bad solutions to people s problems? Describe it. When you need advice, where do you turn? Name some other places people turn to for advice. Lead into Bible study by saying: Jesus is described in the Bible as Wonderful Counselor. Today we ll look at three reasons why He is qualified to direct our lives. Magical Mystery Box Bring to class a shoe box for this activity (decorated if you prefer). Prepare slips of paper with the phrases listed in the margin and place them in the box. There should be one slip for every anticipated student. You may need to make duplicates of some phrases and/or add a few statements of your own. Say to the class: I ve got a magical box that holds the answers to all of life s questions. Have the students ask the box a question out loud, pull out a slip of paper, and read the answer to the class. Allow everyone to ask one question. Then say: This was a silly activity, but it demonstrates the idea that some people will turn to strange places for advice. Ask students to name some places people turn to for advice. 10 Step 2 Searching the Word Life Focus: Jesus, the Wonderful Counselor, wants to be the director of our lives. Use ONE of the following activities to help your students give three reasons why Jesus is qualified to direct their lives. report 20 minutes Young Teen Student, Bibles, paper, pens QUICK STEP Certified Divide the class into three groups. Turn with them to page 5 of their student books, giving each group one of the reporting assignments found there. They are to imagine that the fictitious Ancient Jewish Psychological Association (AJPA) met to discuss whether or not Jesus of Nazareth should be certified as a counselor. They should read the Scriptures cited and write their portion of the AJPA certification report on another sheet of paper. As groups work, move among them to help with their assignments. Explain the background of the texts, using the commentary from Encountering God s Word as a resource. Have each group report on its findings when group work is completed. Comment as needed to make sure that all main points are made clearly and completely. Lead into the next section of the lesson by saying: The prophet Isaiah spoke of one who would come and be the ultimate guide, the Wonderful Counselor. In this account of the demon-possessed man, we see that Jesus is that counselor. He spoke the words of God, was recognized as qualified by those He treated, and achieved remarkable results. Let s see what happens today when people allow Jesus to guide. research 20 minutes Young Teen Student, Bibles, pens Footnotes Turn with students to page 3 of the student books. Make sure each teen has a Bible and a pen. Then give the following Scripture-marking assignment to the entire group: Read Luke 4:32 and 36 in your books. Place a numeral 1 over the word that appears in both verses that describes a characteristic of Jesus teaching. In the margin of your page, place a numeral 1 and this Scripture reference John 12:49. How does this reference explain why Jesus teaching had this authority? Pause between sections of the assignment to further explain the text, using the commentary from Encountering God s Word as a resource. Read Luke 4:33, 34. The demon-possessed man had some remarkable knowledge. Place a numeral 2 after the sentence that states that knowledge. In the margin, place a numeral 2 and these references Mark 5:1-7; Matthew 20: What do the patients in these stories kno w about the identity of Jesus? Place a numeral 3 after the last sentence on this page. In the margin, place another 3 and this reference John 9: What was the topic of conversation in both cases? Close this activity with these words: The prophet Isaiah spoke of one who would come and be the ultimate guide, the Wonderful Counselor. In this account of the demon-possessed man, we see that Jesus is that counselor. He spoke the words of God, was recognized as qualified by those He treated, and achieved remarkable results. Let s see what happens today when people allow Jesus to guide. 8 Wonderful Counselor, Lesson 1

11 Life Focus: Jesus, the Wonderful Counselor, wants to be the director of our lives. Use ONE of the following activities to help your students investigate the life of someone who lets Jesus direct him or her today. Making It Real Step 3 QUICK STEP A Life Extraordinaire Turn with your students to page 6 in the student book and read the movie review. This student page is written as a movie review, analyzing a person whose life had Jesus as the director. This review sample was not written for any specific person it was done as a general example for what your students will be creating. The review was composed around the three main points of the Bible study. The sections about the plot, the characters, and the resolution coordinate with the main words on page 6 of this book: right, recognition, and results. Challenge your students to choose a modern-day person whose life follows the direction of Jesus (either someone they know personally or someone they ve heard about). Then they should write their own review, using specific examples from the person s life. They also must find a way to incorporate the three points of Bible study into their review. Write these on the board. Students may work in groups or individually. Walk around and assist your students as needed while they work. After some time, allow students to share their movie reviews. Then lead into the final lesson step by saying: Now that we ve looked at the benefits of having Jesus as a guide and director, let s discuss how we can seek Jesus advice when we have our own decisions to make. writing 20 minutes Young Teen Student, paper, pens, whiteboard, dry-erase marker Not Here Right Now Play the first track of CD, titled Not Here Right Now. The skit depicts several people s answering machines and what their messages say about who is directing their lives. Listen to the skit and then allow students to work in small groups to answer the following: Summarize the messages in this skit. What is directing each person s life? Consider the three qualifications of a good counselor from our Bible study right, recognition, and results. In what ways does the director of each person s life fall short? How might the message of a Christian s life indicate that Jesus is directing that life? Why might the Christian live with greater confidence than those who trust in another life counselor? How might that show itself in the day-to-day course of life? After some discussion time, allow each group to report its discussion to the rest of the class. Then lead into the final lesson step by saying: Now that we ve discussed the benefits of having Jesus as a guide and counselor, let s discuss how we can seek Jesus advice when we have our own decisions to make. audio skit 20 minutes Young Teen Resources CD, CD player Young Teen Teacher Guide, Unit 1, Lesson 1 9

12 Step 4 Living It Out Life Focus: Jesus, the Wonderful Counselor, wants to be the director of our lives. Use ONE of the following activities to help your students seek Jesus counsel for making specific decisions in their lives. 5 minutes lyrics to I Surrender All prayer QUICK STEP All to Jesus Say: As we ve learned today, Jesus is equipped with the wisdom, power, and ability to guide us through anything in life. Right now, think of either a problem that is bothering you or a big decision you know you ll have to make soon. The hymn I Surrender All starts out with these words: All to Jesus I surrender / all to Him I freely give. Have you surrendered your situation to Jesus? Have you asked Him to give you advice? Spend some time in silent prayer, allowing students to talk to Jesus about the problems they face. Close by reading the lyrics to I Surrender All (or singing it as a class). Distribute ENCOUNTER The Magazine. challenge 5 8 minutes Young Teen Resources Sheet 1 (or Young Teen Resources CD, projection equipment), index cards, pens, Bibles Wonderful Counselor Display Sheet 1 (or project it digitally from the CD). Explain: This poster shows just a few of the many names attributed to Jesus in the Bible. All these titles describe how Jesus fills the role of Wonderful Counselor. Encourage students to choose a name from the poster that is meaningful to them and write the name and the Scripture on an index card. On that same card, have them write down a problem or decision that they need to give over to the Wonderful Counselor. Challenge them to pray about their situation every day this week and to trust Jesus to guide them in His wisdom. To close, spend time praising Jesus for being all these titles. Have volunteers pray short sentence prayers about the names listed on the poster, such as Jesus, You are the author of life or Jesus, we thank You for being our shepherd.
