It was a chance for me to spend some time there, a chance to get to know the country a little better and also to get to know our partners there: Pere Kesner Ajax, the Executive Director of the Bishop Tharp Institute (BTI) and Rector of Ascension Church, and Angela Galbraith, the missionary from the United States who works in the Haiti partnership office and supports so much of our work. I flew into Port au Prince and was bused from my plane to the baggage claim building. It s a large warehouse, essentially, with a tin roof. It was quite warm in there last July, but there s been a lot of rain this Spring in Haiti, so it was overcast and much cooler. I carried on all my luggage, and so I quickly cleared immigration, and was ready to head out. Instead of clearing customs, though, and leaving the building, Meeting our Candidates I just stood in baggage claim and waited for Kesner. As a rule (or maybe I should say, by law) folks from the outside can t come into baggage claim, but on our last two trips to Haiti, Kesner had somehow made it inside. He s one of those people with friends who can get him in. So I just stood there. After about 30 minutes, I was wondering if this was a good plan, but I didn t have a plan B. Finally, someone in an airport uniform who I didn t recognize came up and asked Pere Stephen. I said yes, I m Fr. Stephen, and he escorted me outside, where Kesner had been waiting for 30 minutes. It turns out that his friend wasn t there that day. I learned a lot of things in my 30 minute wait: that Kesner can t always come inside; that if he doesn t meet us inside, we should walk out to the end of the covered walkway, where he always can meet us; that I shouldn t come to Haiti without his phone number, Angela s phone number, and the phone number of the Diocesan office readily available; and that those phone numbers won t work unless I also have a cell phone that doesn t charge an arm and a leg for roaming outside of the US. Our last two candidates for Assistant for Family Ministry will be with us Sunday, May 6 and Sunday, May 20. We need some of our youth to spend some time with the candidates so that together we can discern the strengths and weaknesses of each. Our new assistant will not be responsible for our youth program on their own--we want them to involve all of us in this relationship that's so vital to our community. But they will be integral to this ministry, and so we truly want to know how each candidate is able to connect with our youth. Please talk to Fr. Stephen or a member of our interview committee (Cindy Hargroves, Joe Jacob, Mollie Regan, Allison Pruitt, and Ismael Cardenas) if you have any questions. 1

2 In the next few days I learned so much more. A group of college students from Haiti behave at the beach more or less the same as a group of college students from ECW the US. CHRISTMAS Angela is planning on PARTY staying on as the Episcopal missioner in Haiti for another year, and then she will open up her own travel business to encourage tourism around the country. Robert E. Lee Memorial Church in Lexington, VA. (I didn t know Lee was a saint) is sponsoring five or six students from Bishop Tharp to attend especially designed technology classes at Dabney Lancaster Community College in July. There s an Episcopal church in Mississippi that s applying for a $25,000 grant from UTO (the little blue boxes that we filled in Lent) to build a proper school building for the children whose tuition we help to pay. Ascension Church in Beraud has no fans to dissipate the still hot air inside its sanctuary. Learning these things gave me a certain intellectual satisfaction. I now have a better sense of what s going on, and that helps me to feel more situated. Even more, though, learning these things deepens my sense of relationship, not just with those in Haiti, but with all of the partners, the friends that we ve gained through our partnership with Haiti. I m talking with folks from Lee Memorial in Lexington and Christ Church in Rye, New York about how we can support the Bishop Tharp Institute together. I m talking with folks at Epiphany in Atlanta about the trip we re taking together in July to lead a Vacation Bible School for the children of Ascension. Kesner has called me brother from the very beginning of our acquaintance. As I get to know him more, I begin to feel the privilege of his using that term for me. And Angela, it s just a delight to know someone who uses her unique gifts and energy to serve the church. Our relationship with Haiti, I m seeing, opens for us manifold opportunities to love and be loved. Pat Smith and Margel Snead went down with Epiphany, Atlanta in March. Pat taught a seminar on Accounting for the students at BTI. Margel began to make plans for our Vacation Bible school program. We received brief cards from the children of Ascension Church this week that we can hand out to the families connected to each of them. After this trip, I ve promised Kesner I would find $400 to help him buy fans for his church. A visit to church on Sunday morning should feel more like heaven than hell. In July, some members of Epiphany, Atlanta will travel with Margel and her husband, Gray, Elsie Garfield and me to lead the Vacation Bible school. The actual program will involve around 50 children for three days. It will cost us $300/day to feed them all, and we ll also provide the supplies for their experience. In July, we ll also have the opportunity to host the BTI students going to Lexington as they pass through DC. (It s the weekends of July 6-8 and ) We want to house them for a night or two each weekend, show them a bit of the area, and invite them to worship with us on Sunday, July 8. If you would like to be involved with any of this to help house students, to contribute to our work or the fans for the parish, to participate in a future trip please let me know. We really are blessed by the many relationships that we ve formed through our partnership with Haiti. I want to be sure that all of us share in this blessing to the degree that we can. Peace Fr. Stephen + Parish Picnic June 10, Our Annual Parish Picnic will be held on the church grounds immediately following the 10:00 AM service Sunday, June 10th. We will grill hot dogs and hamburgers for all. Please bring a side dish and/or dessert to share and your lawn chairs/blankets. If you are unable to bring a side dish and would like to donate funds to defray the cost of the meat, condiments and paper products, please let the office know. Help is needed for morning set-up and post-picnic clean-up, as well as grilling and activities volunteers. Dress casually for church that day. Along with food and fellowship, we are looking to organize a few activities and water fun for the little ones! For more information, please contact Fr. Stephen or Kathleen Aiello in the office. Want to Learn How to Arrange Flowers for the Church?...then join the Flower Committee for a fun and educational Flower Arranging Workshop on Saturday, June 9, at 1pm in Hudson Hall. Our instructor will be Chuck Mason, who has been teaching floral design with Fairfax County's ACE program to rave reviews for many years. Bring a container that is at least 6-8 inches across, and 2 inches tall. We will be learning how to do a triangular arrangement, using Oasis foam. If you have floral shears, please bring those. We will have some shears available for use if needed. The church will provide the flowers for a small donation. The most important consideration is that you want to learn how to arrange flowers - absolutely No Experience is necessary! Please contact Louise Armitage at or ltarmitage@cox.net or Cleta Raymond at or cletaraymond@hotmail.com to sign up for the workshop. 2

3 Shepherd s The Messenger May 2012 Corner Our New Suffragan Bishop: The Rev. Canon Susan Goff On Saturday morning, April 22, the clergy and delegates elected the Reverend Canon Susan Goff as their new Suffragan Bishop. Canon Goff was elected on the fourth ballot, and the announcement of her election was met by wild applause throughout St. George s Episcopal Church in Fredericksburg, where the election was held. Canon Goff will succeed the Rt. Rev. David Jones as Suffragan Bishop of the Diocese. As Suffragan, Canon Goff will help to lead the clergy and congregations of the diocese under the direction of the Rt. Rev. Shannon Johnston, our Diocesan Bishop. Canon Goff is Canon to the Ordinary of the Diocese of Virginia. She is married to the Rev. Tom Holliday. Her previous ministries were as Rector of St. Christopher s in Springfield, Rector of Immanuel, Old Church, in Mechanicsville, Chaplain of St. Catherine s School in Richmond and Chaplain of St. Margaret s School Tappahannock. In addition, she taught liturgics and trained seminarian supervisors at Virginia Theological Seminary. She is a graduate of Douglass College, New Brunswick, Jersey, and Union Theological Seminary in New York City. Goff, 58, has been ordained 31 years. Canon Goff's Acceptance Bishops, Mr. Secretary, Ms. Assistant Secretary, members of Council, I humbly accept this election as your bishop suffragan. I thank those journeyed on this path side by side with me: Hilary and David, Randy, Sue and Shirley. It s been quite an amazing journey. It s one that changes now, but one that is not over for any of us who have been a part of this time. I also share with you a brief reflection. St. Augustine preached a sermon on the anniversary of his consecration as a bishop. He said - now this is not a sound bite and I am going to try to get it right and remember it - he said, What I am for you terrifies me; what I am with you consoles me. For you, I am a bishop. With you, I am a Christian. The former is a title of duty, the latter, one of grace. The former is danger, the latter, salvation. As I stand here before you now I am feeling in my body something of that terror and that danger. But I am also consoled by the hope and strength that I will do the work to which you have called me in community with you. I pledge before you that I will walk side by side with you. I will accompany you first and foremost as a baptized Christian in mission and ministry to the world. I will accompany you as a deacon in hands on service to the poor and needy. I will accompany you as a priest in the celebration of the sacraments and as a faithful pastor. And I will accompany you as a bishop. I don t yet know how to be a bishop, but I know and trust that you will teach me. And I will share with you what I learn. And together we will continue to build up the kingdom of God in this diocese, brick by brick. Together we will continue to do the work Christ has called and empowered us to do. 3

5 The ECW Corner The latest news and activities of the Episcopal Church Women Spring is here! So too the ECW's fundraiser and final book group meeting of the year. As with all of our fundraising, the proceeds will go to supporting needed Inreach and Outreach causes. We will, once again, hold our pre-mother's Day Bake and Plant sale, on Sunday, May 6th. What a great place to pick up a nice plant to give to the Mothers in your life or a delicious home baked goodie or two. This event will also feature two new, incredible opportunities. 1. The first is a silent auction item. The winner gets to have a small assembly of our own St. Thomas Men Eating Breakfast ( MEB ) bunch over for breakfast on Saturday, May 12 th or June 9 th, followed by 2-3 hours of team work on simple honey-do repair, clean-up, lawn & garden, car washing, etc. By the way, this isn t just for women to bid on, men may just as well have a bunch of projects they have been putting off that they would love to have a group of friendly guys to help them get it done so ladies, make sure to encourage the men to bid too! Opening bid $150. See ECW bulletin board to bid. 2. The second is a quilt raffle. We have been given the amazing opportunity to raffle off the handmade quilt by Jill Nenninger (former parishioner) currently on display in Hudson Hall. Tickets are $5 each and will be sold up until final call and the drawing that will take place during the Plant and Bake Sale on May 6th. Please see the raffle announcement and tickets included in this Messenger. The ECW has another great quilt that will replace the current quilt on the wall once the raffle winner takes home his/her prize. There are several ways that you can help us make this event a big success. Consider entering the silent auction. Spread the word about the quilt raffle. Feel free to send the description and ticket sheet to your friends or family who might be interested in winning this beautiful item. A downloadable form will be available on the St. Thomas' website as well as copies on the ECW bulletin board at the entrance to Hudson Hall. Pull out a recipe and make your favorite baked item to donate. We have some very talented young bakers who really WOW'd us all at Christmas. Mark your calendars for May 6th! ECW Book Group Updates: The Book Group meets on the third Wednesday of the month and all the women of St. Thomas are invited to attend. We will cap off a wonderful season of book reading and wonderful community with our Salad Pot Luck & Summer Book Borrowing gathering on May 16 th, starting at 7:00pm, at the home of Gail Galloway Conestoga Court, Oakton, VA There is no book to read for this event, just come and enjoy and bring a book to lend for the summer. 7 The Next Fifty Years Last fall we celebrated the accomplishments of those who founded St. Thomas fifty years ago. They planted the seeds that continue to bear fruit today in our community. Have you ever thought about what we can do today to support those who will worship at St. Thomas fifty years from now? Just as we are called to support the needs of others in the here and now, we should be thinking about our commitment to those who will follow us in this special place. One tangible way to support the next fifty years (and beyond) at St. Thomas is through a contribution to the St. Thomas Endowment. An endowment collects funds, invests them, and uses the income from those investments for designated purposes. Because the original investments are protected, contributions to an endowment provide benefits both now and into the future. The St. Thomas Endowment was started in 2009 and currently has $94,500 in two funds a General Fund that supports outreach and long term maintenance of our property and a Clergy Housing Fund. The Endowment Committee composed of three Vestry members and two parishioners elected directly by the congregation manages the Endowment in accordance with the Plan of Organization adopted by the Vestry. Currently, all funds are invested with the Trustees of the Funds of the Diocese of Virginia. The Trustees have been managing endowment money for the diocese and parishes within the diocese since 1892, and they have performed well in both up and down markets. To date, most contributions to the Endowment have come from the gifts of current parishioners and we are thankful for the head start that has given us. But we also encourage you to consider St. Thomas in your estate planning. Making bequests, designating the Endowment as a life insurance beneficiary, or creating life income gifts (which provide current income and tax deductions along with the gift) are all great ways to plant seeds today that will support St. Thomas future. Have questions about the operation of the Endowment or how to contribute? Please join us after church on May 20 in the Library to learn more. Thanks. 9 Vestry Highlights April 16, 2012 Treasurer s Report: Sue Cardenas indicated that financial operations look good. She indicated that based on the Endowment Committee s decision, last year s potential off-take from the Endowment Fund was reinvested back into the fund. Potential uses of and accounting treatment for the proceeds of the septic tank lawsuit were discussed. Sue presented and the group discussed an expansion of her authorities with respect to certain checking accounts. The issue of synching the signators and coordinators of the checking accounts was reviewed. Sue indicated she would prepare a specific resolution for the Vestry to consider at its next meeting. Audit Committee: The Vestry approved a resolution appointing Pat Smith as chairperson and Deborah Forbes and Geoff Styles as members of the Audit Committee. Finance Manual: Sue Cardenas presented an updated and revised Finance Manual. The Finance committee had reviewed and recommended the adoption of this revised Finance Manual. The Vestry discussed the potential amendment/revision to the Expenditure Policy in the Finance Manual. Methods to promote budget adherence alongside flexibility were discussed. The Vestry agreed to adopt the proposed language circulated by Stephen, allowing for the approval of all expenditures that fell within the budget without vestry consultation; it agreed to monitor implementation in order to determine whether further adjustments were required. Assistant for Family Ministry Position: Stephen discussed the status of our search to fill the assistant for family ministry position. He briefly reviewed the resumes of the three finalists and the dates on which each would be visiting St. Thomas for an interview and participation in a Sunday school class and get-together with youth. A sample job questionnaire was distributed and reviewed. The goal is to have a person recommended to the Vestry by the May vestry meeting. Sanctuary Lighting: Elsie Garfield presented an extensive report on the sanctuary lighting. Current conditions and various alternatives were discussed. It was generally agreed that an improvement was needed. A resolution was approved for contracting with an electrical lighting firm to install a track lighting system with a maximum budget of $5,000. In addition, a resolution was approved authorizing the purchase of a ladder which may be used to replace light bulbs in the sanctuary at a cost not to exceed $500. The Vestry passed a motion to fund the lighting improvements (including purchase of the ladder) from the Property Reserve Fund. VESTRY RESOLUTIONS OF GREAT THANKS The following resolutions were approved to congratulate Geoffrey Greeves and Scott Newman for their hard work and dedication towards the successful conclusion of our Septic Tank litigation. 1. Geoffrey Greeves WHEREAS: Geoffrey Greeves has acted on behalf of St. Thomas Episcopal Church to enable us to recover the cost incurred from a damaged septic field; WHEREAS: his professional prosecution of our case and his legal and rhetorical competence encouraged our adversaries to settle with us in a timely manner; WHEREAS: he served our church pro bono and in order to support our community; BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vestry recognizes and thanks Geoffrey Greeves for generously offering his many talents to St. Thomas Episcopal Church. 2. Scott Newman WHEREAS: Scott Newman has acted on behalf of St. Thomas Episcopal Church to enable us to recover the cost incurred from a damaged septic field; WHEREAS: he learned more about septic systems than any non-professional should know; WHEREAS: he pursued the remediation of our problems through work with numerous county agents, plumbers, and septic engineers; BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED: that the Vestry recognizes and thanks Scott Newman for his selfless dedication and commitment to St. Thomas Episcopal Church. 9

10 This hymn submitted by Jan Gnadt is a favorite to many. Read the interpretation of Robert J Morgan. The original hymn title, Faith s Review and Expectations seems a little unsettling...who s expectations, ours or God s? Amazing Grace 1779 It s hard to shake off a mother s influence. John Newton s earliest memories were of his godly mother who, despite fragile health, devoted herself to nurturing his soul. At her knee he memorized Bible passages and hymns. Though she died when he was about seven, he later recalled her tearful prayers for him. After her death, John alternated between boarding school and the high seas, wanting to live a good life but nonetheless falling deeper and deeper into sin. Pressed into service with the British Navy, he deserted, was captured, and after two days of suspense, was flogged. His subsequent thoughts vacillated between murder and suicide. I was capable of anything, he recalled. More voyages, dangers, toils, and snares followed. It was a life unrivaled in fiction. Then, on the night of March , John, 23, was jolted awake by a brutal storm that descended too suddenly for the crew to foresee. The next day, in great peril, he cried to the Lord. He later wrote, That tenth of March is a day much remembered by me; and I have never suffered it to pass unnoticed since the year 1748 the Lord came from on high and delivered me out of the deep waters. The next several years saw slow, halting spiritual growth in John, but in the end he became one of the most powerful evangelical preachers in British history, a powerful foe of slavery, and the author of hundreds of hymns. Here are some things you may not know about Newton s most famous hymn. His title for it wasn t originally Amazing Grace but Faith s Review and Expectations. It is based in Newton s study of 1 Chronicles 17:16-17: King David.said: Who am I, Lord God? And what is my house, that You have brought me this far? And yet.you have spoken of Your servant s house for a great while to come, and have regarded me according to the rank of a man of high degree And here s a nearly forgotten verse that Newton added near the end of Amazing Grace. Try singing it for yourself: The earth shall soon dissolve like snow, the sun forbear to shine: But God, Who called me here below, shall be forever mine. (Excerpted from: Then Sings My Soul (Robert J. Morgan, Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2003, pg. 79) 10
