1 Issue No. 2 February to April 2013 Welcome to the second edi on of the Newark and Southwell Deanery Newsle er. Dear Readers, Our Diocese of Southwell and No ngham, led by our Diocesan Bishop Paul Butler, is developing a strategy to be in place by Why change? The number of S pendiary clergy will reduce in the coming years due to fewer women and men coming into ministry. A consequence is that new ways of proclaiming the Gospel and empowering communi es has to be developed. To this end each of the eight Deaneries within our Diocese has presented a plan to Bishop s staff. Our plan has been developed through a consulta on process involving mee ngs at Deanery Synod, a Ques onnaire to all parishes and a conference aimed at Postholders, re red and reader colleagues. The result is a booklet which outlines the aspira ons of the Deanery over the coming years. What s the rush? It has been said in the past that the church moves very slowly, if at all. Due in part to the falling role of S pendiary clergy, but of importance because of the changing nature of mission to both to church and community, new approaches need to be put in place with some urgency. Under the heading buildings three main areas have been ven lated. How do we use our church buildings and plant generally? How many buildings do we really need? What sort of buildings do we need as we look to the future? Mission As a Deanery we are thinking broadly about our mission. At a local church level and together with our interdenomina onal partners we need to discover new ways of being in touch. The Web, Twi er, and Facebook seem scary to me and yet I know that to be relevant to all genera ons the church has to engage using all available resources. We are all on an enormous learning curve and over the coming months we will need to work together to put in place elements of our Deanery strategic plan. As the plan develops some aspects may change but to quote Barack Obama Change Is Here to Stay Whether you like it, or not, change is the order of the day. Rela onships change, technology changes, the environment changes, our own way of thinking changes. So instead of shying away from change, we should embrace it and celebrate it. It is hoped that the plans once in place will enable lay and ordained to be more connected, generally supported and confident. Over recent me these have been recurring themes and challenges with regard to how folks feel about both Deanery and Diocese. As we develop new ways of doing ministry, working together and being a Chris an family we will need to be gentle, caring and listening as we move into uncharted waters and develop new pa erns of ministry. 2 Give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me, lest I be full and deny you, and say Who is the Lord? or lest I be poor and steal and profane the name of my God. Proverbs Agur s words speak across the centuries to us of the dangers of both wealth and poverty. He seeks to have enough, no more, and no less. I had a fascina ng conversa on recently with a good friend about their family circumstances in regard to income. There was a consciousness that con nually they lived up to whatever the maximum income had become. It was hard to consider living on less, even though there was a recogni on that in UK terms they were be er off than most (though far from rich ) and that previously they had contentedly lived on less. My friend was quite normal. We all tend to live up to whatever our income is; we struggle to consider living on less. Yet many do; indeed in world terms I can guarantee that everyone reading this is definitely rich. In his public ministry Jesus certainly lived on li le. Yet he was well provided for by others; he knew how to enjoy a good wedding and feast. He valued the gi s of those who produced food, cared for animals etc. He taught more about money and wealth than almost any other subject (certainly a lot more than about sex and sexuality). Yet so o en in church we fail to talk seriously about wealth, poverty, money, etc., (and when we do, tend to reduce it to being about the costs of running our buildings, pay our clergy, etc.). We need to talk more openly, more deeply and more comprehensively about money, wealth crea on, poverty and a global economy with major problems. This is why my Lent series is en tled Money makes the world go round? Together we will look at the Scriptures to reflect on these ma ers. In three talks we will not resolve everything, but I hope we will all think more deeply, and act more wisely with our money whether we are rich or poor as a result of these mes together. One core lesson in this has to be that whatever we have by way of possessions, including money, is not ours but God s. This means we have to work from a basis of ac ng as good stewards of God s money rather than thinking about sa sfying our wants and likes. Lent is a good me to consider money, as we head up to Easter when we celebrate the costliest gi ever made the death of Jesus for all our sins and the most wonderful free gi ever given, forgiveness and new life. 4 A New Year, a New Start and lots of Changes. I love spring, a er the coldness of winter and certainly the wetness of this passing winter, I cannot wait to see the first snowdrops and hopefully soon a er the first daffodils. Simple pleasures in one way, but they also mark the passing of me and of course, the passing of seasons. And I have extra reasons this year in my excitement of looking forward to Spring, as it is when I will be licensed as priest in charge of Norwell, Cromwell, Ossington and Caunton with pastoral care for Su on on Trent and Carlton on Trent. There is no-one more surprised than myself at God calling me into rural ministry. For most of my life, a er a childhood at Skegness (I will try to avoid repea ng the story of my childhood that is in our Diocesan C magazine), most of my life was spent living and working in the city centre and inner city No ngham, working with (and later ministering to) disaffected adults in mainly in educa on and then on to prison, hostels and leading with drug and alcohol dependency. So when it was suggested to me my curacy was to be in the villages of Keyworth, Stanton on the Wolds and Bunny with Bradmore I was shocked and confused. Why had God taken me through all these urban experiences for me to serve in rural communi es? Well, (to paraphrase Gerald Hughes) we certainly do have a God of surprises and my eyes were soon opened to the uniqueness to be found in each village community. As much as all humanity has a commonality, each community has its own strengths and its own needs. And it was through the privilege and pleasure of listening to residents I was able, not only to hear their desires (and hurts) but to be a Chris an presence in their lives. It began to dawn on me, how important the Church was, is and can be in the life of each village. A redundant Church is one of the sadness sights. The Church can be not only the spiritual heart of the community but also it can reach out and manifest God s love in some many more ways. And it was through planning, organising, enabling, empowering and enjoying a variety of events and ac vi es (including wine tas ng, wedding exhibi ons, and an ques evenings) that I fell in love with rural ministry. New ways of engaging within our communi es are needed, but not at the expense of tradi on and legacy. There is a blending, a balance and a tension which need to be embraced and seen as a joy not a problem. However change can be disturbing for some people, but by being a part of it, in discussion, planning and realisa on, this may be viewed not as changing but rather as a development. And I m aware that my new appointment will bring a change not just for me but for these six parishes, for their Churches and communi es, and to a lesser extent to the deanery as a whole. And moving to our new home in Norwell I feel is one change that both my husband Lester and I are excited about, and I m sure once moved, our many cats, hens and cockerel will love their new home too. Revd Chris ne French What does a Lay Chair do? Since our diocese decided to enhance the deaneries, the role of Lay Chair has become more significant. This means that, as Lay Chair, I am more ac ve in the planning in the deanery. It involves deployment of personnel, both lay and ordained, being part of the discernment and interviewing processes, chairing and planning Deanery Synod and Standing Commi ee, and the joyous opportunity to meet new people and visit new places. The last is the greatest reward, although it can be the greatest disadvantage! There are some very interes ng and faithful servants of the Lord working away in quiet corners. Their constant perseverance in the face of some dwindling congrega ons and the perennial need to raise enough money to keep their buildings open as a place of witness to the Lord, is a source of inspira on to me in my spiritual journey. The downsides are no more than those that you meet in everyday life and usually involve misunderstandings and miscommunica ons. Both of which can usually be sorted out very easily. What does the future hold for the deanery and the lay chair? The deanery will con nue to be a strong unit for the people in the churches to use as a place of fellowship, informa on gathering and dissemina on and hopefully a greater involvement in the life of the wider church. As lay chair I have 18 months before my term of office is up and I would like to visit as many parishes within the deanery as possible, every service I do visit is very much a holiday within my own worship pa erns. I would also like to see the deanery plan as finalised as possible, within the constant changing life of the Church. So to everyone I wish a belated happy New Year and look forward to more happy chances! 5 Changes in Safeguarding Roadshow The church does a huge amount of work with children, young people and vulnerable adults. We are o en the people who provide ac vi es and do pastoral care where no-one else does. But we also need to ensure that all the work we do is safe for the workers and volunteers, and safe for those we are serving. For the last 12 years the Criminal Records Bureau check (CRB) has provided us with one way to make sure that people are safe, along with careful recruitment and good prac ce in how they work. But now it is changing. There is a new agency called the Disclosure and Barring Service, a slightly different form to be filled in, and changes in who we will and will not be allowed to do checks for. Each church has to get this right, and there are legal penal es for the diocese (and more specifically for me!) if we don t. To communicate these changes we are running a Changes in Checking Roadshow in Newark and Southwell Deanery, which will take place at Christ Church, Newark, on Monday 15 th April from pm. There will be 9 other events in other parts of the diocese if the appropriate people can t make that date. Newark and Southwell Monday April 15 Christ Church, Newark Bassetlaw and Bawtry - Tuesday April 23 Christ Church, Worksop No ngham South Thursday April 25 St Barnabas, Lenton Abbey West Bingham Monday April 29 St Paul s, Wilford Hill Mansfield Thursday May 2 Warsop Parish Centre No ngham North Tuesday May 7 St Margaret s, Aspley Newstead Thursday May 9 th Skegby Parish Hall East Bingham Thursday 16 St Mary s Parish Hall, Radcliffe on Trent Gedling Monday June 3 St James, Porchester Hall Final mop-up session Monday June 10 Holy Trinity, Southwell As these are significant changes it will be a requirement that at least one of the following a end from each church: Incumbent, Safeguarding Officer, CRB checker (if different), up to a maximum of 3 from each church. If none of these a end, the Diocese will no longer be able to organise and process the criminal records check for people in that church. Of course, this Roadshow will not be a Safeguarding Training session, and therefore those who need to update their safeguarding knowledge will also need to a end another event. So if you are an appropriate person from your church, then make sure you put this date in your diary. We look forward to seeing you. Nick Harding Youth Confirmation Service Sat 9th March 2013 A youth-orientated rite of passage experienced with peers taking this step together. A great opportunity to invite friends and family to share in this important stage of a young person s walk with Christ. With diocesan support, the young people will participate in preparing for and leading their own confirmation service. Sat 9th February 11am-2pm, Social event at Holy Trinity Southwell for all candidates Tue 5th March 7pm - Rehearsal at the Minster Sat 9th March 7.30pm - Confirmation Service at the Minster Please contact Alison Jacobson , alisonj@southwell.anglican.org with names of potential candidates by Monday 28th January, TRENT CHURCHES CHOIR SEEKS CONDUCTOR Are you interested in church music? Could you conduct this thriving church choir? The Trent Churches Choir is currently seeking to recruit new members. Since the amalgama on of two benefices in 2010, the choir has supported the worship and services of the villages of Bleasby, Rolleston, Fiskerton-cum- Morton, Hoveringham, Upton, Halloughton and Thurgarton. The choir was founded in 2002 by John King but since 2010 has been conducted by Alexander Turner, a student at the Minster School and currently the Choral Scholar at Southwell Minster. As he is about to take his A-levels, he will be re ring from the post at Easter 2013, so the choir is urgently seeking a new director, as well as new singers (all voices). The current membership of the choir stands at around 25 and the repertoire is varied: we have tackled liturgical music from 15 th to 21 st centuries, including works by Tallis, Purcell, Mozart, Durufle, Walton and Goodall. We rehearse on Wednesday evenings, term- me from September to April, at Thurgarton Methodist Church. We sing 3 or 4 services a term, and support services at major fes vals, including a Christmas Carol Concert. If you are interested in joining us or would like further details please phone or nigelandsylvia@hotmail.com.

6 This year the Bishop s Lent Appeal will be combined with funds from all confirmation services to support two different projects... one close to home and the other in one of our partner dioceses across the world. Poverty is a scourge that affects people all over the world, writes Bishop Paul. God calls us to engage with the poor and help see their lives transformed. These two projects with our partners Christian Aid & Church Urban Fund help us do this... Transforming Notts Together As homeless numbers rise coupled with cuts to benefits and growing unemployment any more people are finding themselves on the streets. A new partnership with the Church Urban Fund (CUF) and the Dicoese has set up a joint venture Transforming Notts Together which will channel funds and support into church-backed social action projects across the city and county such as debt and money management support, and winter shelters which provide a lifeline to homeless people and are based at various churches in the coldest months. Overcoming barriers Supporting people living with disabilities in the Middle East...There are approximately 500,000 people living with disabilities in Lebanon and the West Bank (part of the occupied Palestinian territory). This new project will improve the lives of people with disabilities in the Middle East, enabling them to become more confident and active members of society. It will help them improve the skills needed toset up their own businesses or enter employment. The work will be carried out by two long-standing Christian Aid partners in the region: the Lebanese Physically Handicapped Union (LPHU) and the East Jerusalem YMCA. Donations will be split 50:50 between these two projects An evening with spy chief turned author at Southwell Minster Former Director General of MI5 and bestselling spy fiction author, Dame Stella Rimington, will be sharing stories of her life during an evening at Southwell Minster this March. An evening with Dame Stella Rimington on Friday 1st March, starting at 7pm for 7.30pm is being supported by the Cathedral Friends and will be held in the Minster s Nave. 7 Looking ahead at church schools in the Newark and Southwell Deanery Schools provide us with fantas c opportuni es for mission. They are a highly influen al factor in the lives of the children and young people they serve and if we create strong rela onships with them, they give us one of our main ways of reaching out and touching children s lives. Few would disagree that the educa on a child receives has a huge impact not only on their current happiness but also on their personal development and future flourishing. It is for all these reasons, that na onally the Church of England has recently reasserted through the Church School of the Future Review report that Church School s stand at the centre of the Church s mission to the na on. Church schools enable more direct engagement with children and their families than any other contact including regular Sunday worship. Church schools aim to be dis nc ve and inclusive, excellent but not eli st and to be witnesses and guardians of their Chris an founda ons whilst serving increasingly secular and mul -faith communi es. Newark and Southwell deanery having 17 church schools within its boundaries is uniquely placed to be involved in this mission. We have some brilliant work going on in these schools. I pick this up regularly through my own visits and those of my school advisers and through contact with headteachers, founda on governors, clergy and parents. The Ofsted and SIAS reports for these schools bear this out too. However, many of you will have picked up that we are living through interes ng mes in the Bri sh Educa on system. Indeed, some people would say that we are currently in the middle of the most significant reshaping of the system for over half a century. Many of the things you and I have probably taken for granted in the organisa on of the system such as the role of the local authority are changing considerably and church schools are not exempt. The reality is that the nature of what we might call the contract between the church and the state is under renego a on. The rolling out of the government s academy programme and some of the other government reforms mean that provision of school places across the diocese and deanery is likely to change over the next few years. We have a huge variety of church schools across the Newark and Southwell Deanery. They vary in size from below 50 to 1600 and serve children from many contras ng social backgrounds and consequently the impact of these changes is likely to vary according to context. So... these are challenging mes for church schools but also exci ng mes too. What can you do as a deanery? Strategically, this is a par cularly important me for churches to priori se the work of founda on and ex-officio governors. We need vacancies to be filled and governors to be really involved in order for the church to be able to con nue to influence the way that our church schools are shaped and run. If your parish has a small school encourage the governors and leadership team to think about the best model of leadership to serve the school on into the future. Many small rural schools are entering into collabora ons, federa ons or small academy chains to sustain viability. (Remember to talk to the DBE about your plans!) The Minster school in Southwell has applied to be a teaching school which is very exci ng and if accepted this will bring significant benefits to the school and opportuni es for building capacity in order that it can support other local schools both primary and secondary. If this goes ahead we hope many of our schools will want to become part of the teaching school alliance as it is likely to be a hub for networking and dissemina ng best prac ce encourage them to do so. Find out regularly about the issues facing your schools as this is the only way you can offer appropriate and mely support. Value those involved in your church schools and show you value them. This cannot be underes mated in terms of the effect it has on morale. Whilst the rewards experienced through teaching can be priceless, teachers also face an unenviable range of pressures and these can feel even greater when significant change is going on. Volunteering con nues to be a key prac cal way that church members can express their support to schools and build a rela onship with them. There is a whole host of ways in which you can do this. If you don t fancy being a governor you could help with reading or classroom ac vi es, help with clubs, go on visits or be prepared to respond to other specific requests from the school. Such opportuni es can be very rewarding. Finally, pray for your schools and for the Diocesan Board of Educa on as it seeks to make wise long term decisions about schools and the way they are run and as it adjusts to taking on new responsibili es in rela on to standards and performance of schools. Our church schools provide a unique context for working out the three strands of our diocesan mission statement and we long that the partnership between church and schools should be strengthened and deepened on into the future in order that church schools can con nue to offer high quality educa on based on a dis nc vely Chris an ethos and values. Claire Meese Diocesan Director of Educa on January 2013

There have been some changes from previous similar grant schemes, so please read on. As previously, the priority remains structural repairs urgently required within the next two years that have been clearly iden fied and defined in a condi on survey such as a Quinquennial Inspec on. This new programme is also designed to encourage more people and a wider range of people to take an interest in places of worship and to help care for it in the future. The HLF hope to achieve this by finding new ways in which places of worship can be used by the wider community beyond the primary func on of worship and/or by providing new opportuni es for people to find out about the heritage of places of worship.
