SCRIPTURE Mark 10: Peter Norman People were bringing little children to him in order that he might touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them. But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it. And he took them up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them. 6 11:00 AM ORDER OF SERVICE Please ensure that all personal electronic devices are turned off. Nursery care is available. PRELUDE Aria THE APPROACH J.S. Bach... Stephen Boda, organ PROCESSIONAL HYMN PLEASE STAND No. 217 All Creatures of Our God and King 6 Lasst Uns Erfreuen CALL TO WORSHIP Minister: The Apostle Paul wrote: Do you not know that you yourselves are God s temple and that God s spirit dwells in your midst? (1 Cor. 3:16) All: We gather this morning, united with one another by God s Holy Spirit and by our common call to be the Body of Christ in the world. Minister: As we come to this time of worship, let us open our hearts to God s presence among us, remembering the promise of our resurrected Lord, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. All: Come, Holy Spirit. We are here, and we know you were here before us. Through prayer and through song, through your Word and through our fellowship, open our hearts to your presence among us, that we may be filled with courage to bear your faithful, unfailing presence into the world around us. All sing: We are one as we come, as we come, joyful to be here in the praise on our lips there s a sense that God is near. We are one as we sing as we seek, we are found; and we come needful of God`s grace as we meet, together in this place. (No. 402 v. 1) PRAYER OF APPROACH PLEASE BE SEATED PRAYER OF CONFESSION SAY TOGETHER (based on ideas from Faithful Presence by David Fitch, p. 24) Minister: Holy God, Scripture tells us over and over that you come to be present with your people;

7 All: You give us your Holy Spirit to be your people, and then you send us into the world. Often, however, we lose sight of your presence. We try to hold our own lives together, without asking for your guidance. We pass by people in need, feeling helpless to help them. In our striving and independence, we have not allowed space for you to be present in our lives, or between us and the people around us. Forgive us, O God, and renew our hearts and our lives by the power of your Holy Spirit. KYRIE SING TOGETHER Lord have mercy upon us; Christ have mercy upon us; Lord have mercy upon us. ASSURANCE OF PARDON DOXOLOGY PLEASE STAND No. 339 v. 3 Let all of humankind, in this their concord find: may Jesus Christ be praised! Let all the earth around ring joyous with the sound: may Jesus Christ be praised! Laudes Domini WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS MINISTRY OF MUSIC Shout to God for Joy THE WORD OF GOD 7 Sirett... Sanctuary Choir Shout to God, shout to God for joy, shout for joy, you righteous! Praise is fitting from loyal hearts. Give thanks to God, give thanks with the harp; sing praise to God, to God with the ten stringed lute. Sing a song, a new song to God; play skillfully and with shouts of joy. For the word of God is true; God s ev ry deed is faithful. The earth is full of your constant love, By your word the heav ns were made, the countless stars by the breath of your mouth were made. Your counsel, O God, shall stand for ever, the purpose of your heart through all generations. Our hearts rejoice in you, O God. Let your love, let yout steadfast love be up on us, as we put our trust in you. SCRIPTURE READING Luke 10: Patrick Devine After this the Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself intended to go. He said to them, The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. Go on your way. See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves. Carry no purse, no bag,

8 no sandals; and greet no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, first say, Peace to this house! And if anyone is there who shares in peace, your peace will rest on that person; but if not, it will return to you. Remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide, for the laborer deserves to be paid. Do not move about from house to house. Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you; cure the sick who are there, and say to them, The kingdom of God has come near to you. But whenever you enter a town and they do not welcome you, go out into its streets and say, Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off in protest against you. Yet know this: the kingdom of God has come near. I tell you, on that day it will be more tolerable for Sodom than for that town. Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the deeds of power done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. But at the judgment it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon than for you. And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? No, you will be brought down to Hades. Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects you rejects me, and whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me. The seventy returned with joy, saying, Lord, in your name even the demons submit to us! He said to them, I watched Satan fall from heaven like a flash of lightning. See, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.
