Proceeds will go to the Shut Ins and Families holiday meals at Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. A portion of the proceeds will go to the giving tree recipients again this year. "When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarrelling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, gossiping, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God. But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and selfcontrol. There is no law against these things! Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit s leading in every part of our lives. Let us not become conceited, or provoke one another, or be jealous of one another." But love one another! - See more at:

From the Council President: Greetings Glendale, Yesterday was Easter, the celebration of the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Halleluiah! Good Friday is good because it is the time that Christ won the struggles from Satan; we should all celebrate that as well. In an article titled, Christ-Shaped Leadership, the author quotes, Christ-shaped leaders include, rather than deny, the reality of failure and death, and thus establish patterns of life that hope in, live out and anticipate resurrection. Regardless if any one of us is leaders in the church or not, the author suggests we should anticipate the daily resurrection in our lives. The death and resurrection is not about giving up hope, rather to acknowledge the reality of death. Death in this case is not the closing of doors. Perhaps it is the result of the giving of life to all of God s people. When Christ was resurrected, the early Christian church leaders taught the faithful. They did this by going out to the various cities and communities and began to set up structure by supplying church leaders; bishops and deacons, missionaries that brought the good news to others. This structure that the early church developed created a fully networked series of small churches placed throughout the regions. This structure also provided nourishment, gave strength against persecution and helped them grow into the Christian church at large. This structure was hidden most of the time, and even today, we find those who don t see the structure of building and supporting the church. It existed after the resurrection of Christ to create the church, and it still exists today to continue to create the church. Where would we be today without the structure for the church, the behind-the-scenes work of those many to keep the church running day in and day out? At Glendale our structure is in place. Some may see this as our constitution and the council, and yes that is structure, however, it is also the structure of loving one another, befriending the lost, and witnessing to those who need to hear Christ s words. Let s all be the structure that Christ s Church still needs today as much as ever. Upcoming for Council: The next council meeting is set for April 12, anyone is welcome to attend. The new Nomination Committee will be working together to pray and seek out individuals for upcoming open positions. If the Lord is leading you to be on a council or ministry position, prayerfully consider talking with someone about it. You can contact any member of the committee, the current council or officers. Please ask questions! The discussion on Re-Development is ongoing with the council learning more about it from the synod and in talking with each other. The council has asked that Synod Pastor Jerry Buss return to Glendale on a Sunday post-service time. Look for it around mid-april. This is a time for you to ask the questions you have had or did not get to ask. Here will be the time for you to learn. At our last council meeting it was agreed that we would host a blood drive at Glendale. The tentative date for this is May 23 rd. Look for more information and advertisement as we get closer. This is a great opportunity for Glendale to offer this service and hopefully engage with our community as well. Be praying for this day and those who need to be there! The Glendale Property Management and Glendale Campus Ministries have been working together in various activities. A few weeks back, there was a group church clean-up and potluck by all of the churches attending the campus. Everyone who attended did a great job and the plant looks fantastic. Look for more group activities from both groups as the year goes on. In Christ Love, John Elliott, Glendale President

Glendale Evangelical Lutheran Church Council Meeting Minutes of The meeting was called to order at 6:32PM,, by President Elliott, with those present: Noel Gibb (Stewardship, Budget and Finance), John Elliott (President), Tammie Elliott (Worship and Music), Dick Lodmill (Treasurer), Jackie Kissler (GLS), Cindy Leeson (Youth and Family), Jim Wickham (Vice President), Debbie Wickham (Fellowship and Community), and Pastor Gary. Loretta Anderson (CE), Marlyn Wahlstrom (Evangelism), and Gary Colgren (Property Management) were unavailable. Faith Sharing Cindy Leeson took the floor to give her reflections. She expressed how she has been doing a job she really does not look forward to: Unpacking stored materials. She told how she ran across all the pictures she had, and how it revealed to her how much she missed people in her lives and how we need to be more responsible to contact others in our lives. Previous Minutes The call went out for the minutes of the past meeting. Carl Huber read the minutes aloud and minutes were subsequently approved. Pastor Report Pastor Gary handed out his report for the month and reviewed it with the council. It pointed out the need for heart changes, as prompted by the Holy Spirit. It talked about the real presence of Jesus in our lives. Pastor wanted to emphasize the thanks giving to the Holy Spirit, for the Love we gain, as we move through the re development process. Presidents Report President John reported that although he did not dispatch his written report, however we are actually moving ahead. He pointed out the efforts of the Campus Ministries Group and how we have been actually moving ahead with all user churches being involved in various projects to take ownership of the facilities we all use. Treasurer s Report The next call went out to the Treasurer for his report. Dick passed out a matrix which shows the planned budget, and the first two months of the budget and the plan. Dick asked for some clarity for the vote at the annual meeting verses what the congregation and the council approved. John responded by clarifying the handout at the congregational meeting Dick reviewed the first two months of the actual expenses, and pointed out certain expenses that were incurred in February, in lieu of January, due to some cost accounting procedures. Old Business 1)John moved to the congregational vote for re direction. He reviewed the presentation we made to the attendees at the Annual Meeting. He also pointed out what has to be done to proceed with re development. Pastor Gary read the letter that John had sent him which pointed out the things that had to take place for re development. A deep discussion ensued, and we agreed to wait for more information from the Synod to help us with further planning.

New Business 1)The next item reviewed what was learned at Council 101. John will pass out Information to the council at the next meeting. Tammie was able to report on the seminar the three ladies attended last Saturday. They learned how to make worship more inviting to young people to our church. Again the info will be passed on to the council. 2)President John expressed a request for the Church of Elohim to use our kitchen in the Gym until 9:00PM in lieu of 8:00PM. We agreed to allow. Paul may have to be compensated? 3)John asked on behalf of Cindy Leeson's team for permission to have a Blood Drive as a Community outreach. Questions arose as to what the blood drive company was about, and do they have further references and what will be our involvement? Tammie reported that it was the same company that Prince of Peace Lutheran Church uses. More to come on the request. The motion for adornment went out. The meeting was adjourned at 8:20PM. Respectfully submitted; Carl L. Huber, Council Secretary

Can We Answer the Question: WHY Once for continuing education I signed up for an introduction to philosophy course at the community college. I was a music education major in college and never had any philosophy courses. Since philosophy and theology are so closely related, I thought it was about time that I became better acquainted with the Western philosophical tradition. So off I went to learn how the great philosophers have addressed the questions of human existence. It was an interesting experience. As we marched through the centuries of Western philosophy, it seemed that the philosophers changed the approach to addressing the big questions meaning, transcendence, suffering, the role of the will. The whole process was led by a professor who described himself as a lapsed Mormon who, I believe, never quite made it out of the protest milieu of the 1960s. This convergence of a professor working through the rejection of his tradition and the philosophical systems that paid more attention to how versus why was uncomfortable. I didn t buy into determinism, especially when one student used it to explain a rather unfortunate choice that involved drinking and driving (no one was injured). What was a Lutheran girl to do? My chance came when the professor assigned a paper to be written about our understanding of any of the philosophies covered in class. I dove in. This was an extra credit assignment designed to give a second chance to those who were in some danger of not passing the course. As I was not in that category, I immediately became one of those students (I m sure my classmates used earthier language). I titled my paper How or Why: Newtonian Mechanics vs. A Quantum Metaphysics. Pretty much over the top, but I was on a mission. I wanted to make the point to my professor that there is more in life than the how of things, that there is meaning and transcendence even if we can t by reason or human understanding perceive it. I wanted to give witness to my conviction that there is more going on than a life of just mechanics and technique on the way to some deterministic conclusion. And I wanted to point to the truth I had experienced that there is a loving and relational being who cares about us and about the creation. Needless to say the professor was mystified by the amount of effort I put into the project, and he did take five points off because I used a contraction. But the point then, as it is now, is that we as a culture and a church have become proficient at talking about the how of things. For the church this means how has become the question that determines where we focus, how we live, where we allocate resources. We have developed programs beautiful programs on how to do Christian education, worship, stewardship, advocacy, justice, evangelism, global ministry and youth ministry. Don t neglect any of these. But can we, as a church, answer the question why? As we engage in conversation about the future direction and priorities of this church this year, this is the question we must answer. If we can t answer this question clearly and with conviction, I don t see a lot of change for us. In the Small Catechism, Martin Luther gives us some direction: I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father in eternity, and also true human being, born of the Virgin Mary, is my Lord. He has redeemed me, a lost and condemned human being. He has purchased and freed me from all sins, from death and from the power of the devil, not with gold or silver but with his holy, precious blood and with his innocent suffering and death. He has done all this in order that I may belong to him, live under him in his kingdom, and serve him in eternal righteousness, innocence, and blessedness, just as he has risen from the dead and lives and rules eternally. This is most certainly true. Read more about: Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton in the March edition of Living Lutheran.
