2 Padre s Corner September 9, 2018 Twenty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time "Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty, reflected Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Dorothy Day, peace activist being considered for sainthood, expressed these sentiments: "We have all known the long loneliness, and we have found that the answer is community." Actor Tom Hanks, who sent me his autograph a decade ago, choreographed this logic: "There's a difference between solitude and loneliness. I can understand the concept of being a monk for a while." Silent film pioneer Rudolph Valentino: "The loneliest ebb of my life came on that Christmas Eve, only one day after my arrival in New York. The abyss of loneliness. I ate a solitary dinner in a small cafe, and the very food tasted bitter with my unshed tears. One doesn't dare cry in America. It is unmanly here." Music and movies often express the battles with loneliness in human existence. "I've Been Lonely Too Long" was a song by the "Rascals" released in Verses in part: "I've been lonely too young... In the past it's come and gone, I feel like I can't go on without love... As I look back I can see me lost and searching." The "Moody Blues" in 1967 released the piercing melody "Nights in White Satin." On a recent drive to visit an author in Wallkill, on a lovely sunny day, I let this verse seep deep inside of my soul. "Breath deep the gathering gloom. Watch lights fade from every moon. Bedsitter people look back and lament. Another day's useless energy spent... Lonely man cries for love and has none... Senior citizens wish they were young." Director Delbert Mann directed "Marty" in 1955, starring Ernest Borgnine ( ) as a lonely food store owner and the equally lonely teacher he meets played by Betsy Blair ( ). Marty Piletti is thirty-four, the only sibling in his large family not married. He meets Clara at the Stardust Ballroom in the Bronx, who was abandoned by a date. The dynamics of a lonely mother that does not want to be left alone should he marry and friends that are jealous he has met someone threaten to derail this budding romance. When one such friend challenges his emotions of love, Marty chastises him with these words: "You don't like her, my mother don't like her, she's a dog and I'm a fat, ugly man! Well, all I know is I had a good time last night! I'm gonna have a good time tonight! If we have enough good times together, I'm gonna get down on my knees and I'm gonna beg that girl to marry me! If we make a party on New Year's, I got a date for that party. You don't like her? That's too bad!" Marty and Clara both go to church together, which is a wonderful place to build a spiritual base into that relationship. (I recently had the joy of seeing a couple meet each other at Mass, with the resultant twinkling eyes and fast heartbeat. I have no idea what the connection will lead to, but having Mass in their life is an excellent starting point.) "Fireproof" was a 2008 Christian film directed Alex Kendrick, starring Kirk Cameron and Erin Bethea. Caleb is a fire captain and Catherine an administrator for a hospital. He loves his toys, including a boat, and is addicted to pornography as a mask for his marital loneliness. She resorts to anger and accusatory language, while battling her own sense of inadequacy and deep loneliness that leads to a potential affair. Unlike in "Marty" his parents and a friend encourage a spiritual approach to the communication impasse. Bringing God into their marriage, seeing it as a divine covenant rather than merely a legal license to execute, transforms their connection while unleashing the necessary graces of mercy and forgiveness. Sister Laura Urbano showed this film to two couples preparing for marriage in O'Connor Hall, which I had the blessing to attend. These couples were already starting out on the right foot, going to Mass every week. They candidly shared with Sister Laura and I that virtually none of their friends went to Mass or were intending to have their marriage ceremonies in a church (preference being town hall, or a destination wedding that few can afford to attend). My main theological point is that we all battle loneliness, including me as a priest. Give all to God for fireproof spiritual strength. Father Bill

4 TODAY TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Isaiah 35:4-7a Isaiah tells the people to be strong and unafraid. God will save his people, and the blind will see, the deaf will hear, and the lame will walk. Streams will come forth in the desert, the sandy ground will become springs of water. Second Reading: James 2:1-5 James encourages the people to never show favoritism. He discusses an usher who escorted a rich man to the best seat, while ignoring a poor man. God chose poor people to be rich in faith, so we should never judge people by their riches. Gospel: Mark 7:31-37 Some people brought a deaf man who could not speak to Jesus and begged him to lay his hand on the man. Jesus opened the man s ears and cured his speech impediment. He ordered the people not to tell anyone, but they were too amazed to keep this to themselves. R.C.I.A. NOTES Today, September 9 th is the opening session for the R.C.I.A. process at Sacred Heart Church. R.C.I.A. stands for Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. It is the process by which people become full members of the Roman Catholic Church. The process is concerned with the total formation of the person into becoming a believing, living, praying and serving member of the Church community and has been going on since the beginning of the Church. It was dropped for a period of time and revived with the Second Vatican Council. It is a gradual conversion process which culminates with the celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. People have been informally meeting since last year and will begin formal sessions on September 9 th. We ask that you keep these people, the sponsors and the R.C.I.A. 6 UNITY MASS On Thursday, September 20 th at 7:00pm we will be having a Unity Mass for the Churches of Sacred Heart and St. Francis. The Mass will be held at St. Francis Church. URGENT FLOOD RELIEF MISSION OF CARMELITES (CMI) Fr. Bejoy s home state of Kerala in South India has suffered a deadly monsoon this year. There are more than 500 casualties due to flooding and landslides. Over one million people are in relief camps. 225,000 people have been left homeless. Many schools, churches and other institutions are submerged. The Carmelite order is actively involved in raising funds for this cause.
