3 The Apopka Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Report, August 2018, Page 3 Dear Residents and Friends of the Apopka Area Community, It s hard to believe that nearly one year ago, I was humbled by the amazing opportunity to lead the premier business organization for one of the fastest-growing communities in Central Florida, both in business commerce and residential development. As the new President of the Apopka Area Chamber of Commerce, I have truly enjoyed meeting so many of you and I m grateful for the chance to share my skills and vision with the Board of Directors and our membership. We ve had tremendous success over the past year, including a significant increase in new and returning members, several new mission-driven events with measurable outcomes, and an important emphasis on creating a more robust and effective organization moving forward. Additionally, with Apopka now the second-largest city in Orange County after Orlando, we ve been charged with implementing the Chamber s new mission, which includes serving the economic development, prosperity, and sustainability of our community and region through connectivity, leadership, education and support. In closing, the Apopka area is a wonderful place to grow your business and every day I m excited about the continued opportunity to meet the expanding business needs of this rapidly growing community. By creating a pro-business environment that supports and champions local businesses, while focusing on economic development, business development and job growth, we can make the Apopka area the most attractive place to live, work and raise a family. On behalf of the team here at the Chamber, we look forward to seeing each of you soon, and we appreciate your continuous support! Best Regards, Robert J. Agrusa President Benefits of Chamber membership The Apopka Area Chamber of Commerce is the leading advocate of economic growth on behalf of the rapidly growing businesses in Northwest Orange County. She has set the bar high for what it means to fill this role. Under her term, the chamber has grown stronger and is well positioned to do big things that will have a positive impact on the community. Thank you, Deborah! I m honored to continue working together as we move forward. Please join me in offering our sincere appreciation to outgoing board members Heather Baker, David Rankin, Pam Dionne, and Ray McLeod for their many years of selfless volunteer leadership. These are just a few of the many individuals that have helped build the foundation of which I am privileged to continue helping shape. I continue to be inspired and energized by our dedicated staff, ambassadors and volunteer leaders who generously offer their leadership and service to help us build a prosperous and sustainable Chamber. I d like to share a bit more about some of the exciting things planned for this year, none of which would be possible without the wonderful support of our community. Over the past several months, I have had the pleasure of working with several board members on a strategic committee to outline our goals for this year and beyond. I m a firm believer that when you get individuals focused on a shared vision, guided by core values, and clarity of intention, big things happen. During this intense process, with feedback and input from our board and members, we have developed a clear plan of action for the next months and to ensure our continued success in future years. To sum up our purpose in three words, we are here to Lead, Connect, and Serve. My hope as I enter this new role is that I can step up and exemplify these values. As I close out this letter I would like to ask three things of you: * Always let us know how we are doing. * Let me know if you would like to be more actively involved. * Help us build a prosperous and sustainable community. Thank you for this opportunity, and I look forward to seeing you at one of our events soon. Sincerely, Ken Croston Jr. Chair Dozens of Realtors from the area took a trip around Apopka, visiting the new Florida Hospital Apopka, courtesy of the Apopka Area Chamber of Commerce.

9 Natural gas is the right fuel for so many reasons. Here are ten of the best reasons. 1) IT S DOMESTIC Most of the natural gas we use is produced in the United States; therefore, America s energy dollars stay at home. 2) IT S DEPENDABLE - Natural gas is transported to your home through a reliable pipeline system. You won t have to worry about tanks or deliveries. Even after major hurricanes and floods, natural gas is usually still available. During power outages, customers supplied with natural gas will be able to continue cooking and taking hot showers until their electricity is restored. 3) IT S CONVENIENT - You simply cannot beat the convenience of a gas grill when compared to charcoal. And consider your natural gas fireplace. Light it up, enjoy the warmth and comfort and turn it off when you re done. What is missing? The mess, the odor left after the fire is out, and the job of replenishing the wood. And, you The Apopka Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Report, August 2018, Page 9 It s only Natural - 10 Reasons to use Natural Gas pay for natural gas after you use it - not before. 4) IT S VERSATILE - Natural gas is ideal for space and water heating, fireplaces (indoor and outdoor), cooking, barbecuing, clothes drying, lighting, generators and other uses. 5) IT S CLEAN - In fact, natural gas is the cleanest burning of all fossil fuels. When it burns, the only by-products are water vapor and trace amounts of inert elements. That s important. 6) IT S SPACE SAVING - With natural gas, there s no fuel storage tank. 7) IT S ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY You ll have no worries about environmental damage from spills or leaks. And, as we stated above, it is the cleanest burning of all fossil fuels. 8) IT S A GOOD INVESTMENT - The availability of natural gas often results in higher resale value of homes. Consider the sense of luxury provided by natural gas appliances such as gas fireplaces, spa or pool heaters, generators, gas lights and tankless water heaters. Nothing else can compare! 9) IT S PLENTIFUL - Natural gas reserves in the United States are abundant - no costly fuel to import from foreign countries. 10) IT S ECONOMICAL - Over time, natural gas has proven to be the least expensive way to heat homes, heat water and cook. As a matter of fact, studies have shown that natural gas is twice as efficient as electricity - and cheaper. Now that s a great combination!

13 Taking a look back at what the Chamber did over the past year It is said that all great businesses evaluate their successes and challenges each year, in order to ensure that they are fulfilling their mission and achieving the goals and objectives that they set for themselves. This review helps us in the strategic planning for the coming year, as well determining our longterm goals. Our new mission is to serve the economic development, prosperity, and sustainability of our community and region through connectivity, leadership, education and support. So, let s break that mission statement down into the components and see how we did: The Apopka Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Report, August 2018, Page 13 ACCOMPLISHMENTS ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT * Apopka Area Chamber was represented on the Board of Directors for the Orlando Economic Partnership, which helped our community by establishing connections to key leaders in economic development in Central Florida. Since that time, they ve learned there are many reasons why families or individuals need a helping hand. They provide a weekly supplemental food box for qualified, lowincome families or individuals. Loaves & Fishes is a non-profit, non-denominational Christian mission, serving a nine-zip-code area. In addition to food, they also provide toiletry, household, and baby items once a month. All that they do is accomplished through God s wonderful grace and donations from local churches, schools, businesses, organizations, and individuals no government funding is received. Each year, over 17,000 food boxes are distributed to over 37,000 individuals. Each month, approximately 33,000 food/toiletry items are given out. At Thanksgiving, they supply families with a turkey and traditional food items. At Christmas, families receive a holiday food box, a tin of chocolates, a gift card, and new toys to over 800 children. You can help them by having a food drive, giving financially, donating toiletry/cleaning supplies/ linens/kitchen items, pledging a turkey for Thanksgiving, donating a new toy for Christmas, or remembering them when you see a BOGO at the grocery store. 15 The Apopka Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Report, August 2018, Page 15 Auto accident? In pain? Then don t hesitate. Call St. Germain! Dr. Patrick St. Germain, Director of St. Germain Chiropractic in Apopka, is a leader in the treatment of auto accident victims, weight loss, diabetes, and other metabolic diseases using natural solutions. He has lectured professionals from all disciplines -- chiropractors, medical doctors, and dentists -- on the consequences of ignoring trauma from auto accidents. And many people have called upon him as their expert for care and treatment of their injuries and feel comfortable with his passion to help them in their most trying time of need. The best way to take care of the pain and suffering involved after an accident, and protect yourself from the problems that often occur later in life from auto accidents is to get checked immediately after the accident. Studies have shown that injuries can have consequences on a person s health even ten years after the accident. And by that time, it is too late to make any lasting corrections to the body to take care of those problems. One of the biggest misunderstandings drivers have is that if they are involved in a crash and if there is little or no damage to the vehicle, there is no damage to their bodies. Many studies have shown the opposite to be true. The occupants will absorb the full impact of the collision, which many times is when the vehicle comes to a sudden and dramatic stop. This is when injuries to the spine occur. Patients seeking help at Dr. St. Germain s office will first come in for an evaluation, which includes an examination that may include x-rays, to look for abnormalities in the curve Voted #1 Chiropractor in Best of Apopka, Dr. St. Germain is an endorsed leader in the treatment of auto accident victims since of the spine and also to look for misaligned vertebrae. A course of treatment will be recommended. He will target and treat the source of pain, which may include advising or coordinating with other doctors to achieve the best results. All patients are different and all receive care specific to their health problem. Dr. St. Germain works with patients through every step of care to ensure that they receive the most thorough and professional care and attention available. 53 The Apopka Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Report, August 2018, Page 53 The Orange County Sherriff s Office notes work of one of Apopka s own Crime is down in Orange County, way down. Much of it has to do with deputies like Sector 1 Master Deputy Steven Rojas. Sector 1 mostly comprises the unincorporated portion of Orange County within Apopka, and keeping the area safe is the number one priority of Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings. Working off-duty at Phyllis Wheatley, one day Rojas met a young man. Let s call him Mike. Master Deputy Rojas saw a young man who needed a good role model and used his own personal time to mentor the young man, made sure he got to school each day, and helped him make extracurricular activities on time. Countywide, the same example of selflessness and community engagement takes place with deputies from the Orange County Sheriff s Office. These acts of altruism, along with strategic Pictured above is Sector 1 Master Deputy Steven Rojas. He, like many others, is making it his priority to keep Apopka safe. community policing, have brought about significant reductions in crime. Countywide, year to date homicides are down 5%, robberies are down 4%, automobile burglaries down 23%, and residential burglaries down 27%. In total, crime in Orange County is down 18% from a year ago. Mike has since finished high school and has moved on to Valencia College, where he is finishing his Associates degree, much to the joy of Master Deputy Rojas. With Mike moving in the right direction, Rojas is looking for another young person to mentor. The 12 year police veteran believes he has to do something, even if small. I am just doing my part, said Rojas just before jumping into his cruiser to head home from a long day of protecting and serving the community. I just hope my little bit helps. More than you know Deputy Rojas, more than you know. Sheriff Jerry L. Demings and the Orange County Sheriff s Office congratulate the Apopka Area Chamber of Commerce for their dedication to the citizens of Apopka. NOW HIRING The Orange County Sheriff s Office seeks qualified Florida certified candidates interested in a career as a Deputy. Positions are open in Uniform Patrol, Court Security (full-time and part-time). Reserve Deputy Volunteer, and Auxiliary Deputy Volunteer. Academy sponsorships, as well as civilian positions, are also available. Please visit our website for more information. The Orange County Sheriff s Office is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Success is not final; failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts. Winston S. Churchill

As part of the three-day operation, Sgt. Harmon, dressed in plain clothes, crossed Piedmont-Wekiwa Road on the north side crosswalk of the road s intersection with U.S. Highway 441. Sample ballots will be out next week By John Peery Apopka Chief Staff Sample ballots for the upcoming primary are scheduled to be mailed Tuesday, August 7, three weeks ahead of the August 28 primary. Voters in Orange County will be sent a sample ballot, which includes a map and driving directions to their polling location, in addition to a representation of their actual ballot. Bill Cowles, Orange County supervisor of elections, said he encourages voters to review the ballot, pre-mark it, and then use it as a guide in the voting booth. Cowles also said voters should pay special attention to their polling location as 20 polling sites across the county have changed since the 2016 election. Four of those voting locations that changed are located in Northwest Orange County. The four polling places that have changed in Northwest Orange County are: * Precinct 229 will move to Apopka Calvary Nazarene at 750 Roger Williams Road from Inspire Centre. * Precinct 232 will move to Grace Pointe Church at 2051 Lester Road from Apopka Golf & Tennis at Errol Estate.
