1 The Testament October 2014 Lincoln Memorial Baptist Church Stop The Silence Along with being recognized for Breast Cancer Awareness, October is also designated as National Domestic Violence Awareness month. Domestic violence is an extremely important topic that impacts thousands of families across the country. Although both men and women can become victims of domestic violence, women are the primary victims. Each year, far too many women lose their lives to episodes of domestic violence. They suffer silently, too afraid to speak out or too unwilling to seek help regarding their abusive relationships. Some are convinced that they can change the behavior of their spouse and/or partner, while others want to avoid the acknowledgement of being in an abusive relationship. Some fear the loss of financial support and others are simply too afraid to leave their abusive partner. So they hide their pain, suffer in silence, and masquerade under an image that everything is alright. The reality, of course, is that nothing could be farther from the truth. As followers of Christ, it is our duty to value and protect the lives of God s greatest creation. No one, male or female, should be subjected to the abuse and anguish that accompanies domestic violence. Controlling anger, and helping others to manage the flashpoints that cause their anger, is a key step in reducing episodes of domestic violence. Anger diminishes our capacity to think clearly and interferes with implementing the Christ-like solutions to problems that our Heavenly Father would have us to do. James 1:19-20 In recent weeks, the issue of domestic violence has been elevated to the forefront of our national consciousness. The story of pro football player Ray Rice and the mismanagement of his domestic violence case by the National Football League received intense media coverage, sparking discussion on the airwaves and around office water coolers. Several other cases involving additional high profile professional athletes received media coverage as well. The coverage forced some individuals and organizations to reassess how they respond to these incidents. It also exposed the lack of thought and consideration that many individuals and entities give to this extremely important topic. Here at Lincoln, our Missionary Department has been proactive in promoting an awareness of the issue of domestic violence. Spearheaded by Sis. LaSheka Wilks, our Missionary Ministry has organized an annual Stop the Silence to Domestic Violence program. Dedicated to the memory of former Lincoln family members Sis. Latisha Williamson and Rev. Jeanetta Crawford, both of whom lost their lives to domestic violence, the program aims to serve as reminder that domestic violence is more than something seen on a news report or something that happens in other cities. It s a serious issue that impacts our homes, friends, coworkers and even our churches. Presenters share their stories of abuse and survival with the hope that it will prevent someone else from suffering or provide them with the courage to escape from a dangerous situation. The overall goal is to save Durham, NC Congratulations Kenya! Sis. Kenya Harrell is the new Youth President of the New Hope Missionary Baptist Association and also President of the Durham County Youth Missionaries. She will preside over all meetings of the Youth Missionary Department, serve as an ex-officio member of all committees and keep the Department informed as to the programs of the church and the State Convention. She will give guidance in carrying out plans and work closely with the Director and Associate Director for the good of the Department. We pray for God s blessings for success for Kenya as He uses her to carry out her Missionary duties! someone s life. This year s program will be on Sunday, October 19th at 3:00pm. Please come out to support the effort to shed more light on this critically important issue. It takes the concerted energy of all of us to educate, intercede and eliminate the episodes of domestic violence. Indeed, we are our brother s and our sister s keeper. Every effort that we make reduces the chance that someone will lose a life and that a child becomes motherless. Let s do our part to help Stop the Silence to Domestic Violence.

3 Member Spotlight -by Sis. Marva Atkins Sis. Dawn Carlisle Sister Dawn Carlisle has been a member of the Lincoln family for six months. She was born in Brooklyn, New York but attended Hillside High School and graduated from Camelot Academy in Durham, North Carolina. Sister Carlisle continued her education at UNC-Chapel Hill and Durham Tech where she received certification as a Pharmacy Tech and an Associate Degree in Clinical Trial Research. She is currently employed as a Senior Clinical Data Analyst at PharPoint Research. In her spare time Sister Carlisle enjoys bowling, playing ruzzle, and spending time with her family. Sister Carlisle has been married for eight years to Deshaun Carlisle. She is the mother of 4 children: two daughters (Sara and Ava); two sons (DeShaun and Dylan); and she also has one granddaughter (Amara). Sister Carlisle stated she enjoyed volunteering with the church over the summer serving lunches and she is excited about her future at Lincoln. Happy Birthday to our October Birthday Celebrities! They pierced His side but broke not a bone Before they sealed His grave with a stone. When the women returned after three days They found it empty; the stone rolled away. God's messenger angel dressed in bright white Appeared and made the guards shiver with fright He told the women Do not fear For Jesus has risen and He's not here. Go now and spread the Good News to all. Tell them to answer the Father's call; For all who believe in Him will be free - Christ Jesus our Savior from Galilee!

4 Outing The young ladies in the LMBC took time from their schedule for an enjoyable team outing on a recent Saturday. The group traveled to Oak Island, toured the Oak Island Lighthouse, enjoyed a ride on the vehicle Ferry between Southport and Fort Fisher and waded in the soothing waters on the beach. The outing provided a welcomed break from their rehearsal schedule and allowed ample time for fun and fellowship. Ushers, Floral & Wellness Anniversary Always on duty and never seeking glory, the members of the Ushers, Floral and Health & Wellness ministries took time out to reflect on their accomplishments during their recent anniversary program. Encouraged by the words of Rev. Dr. Gregory Ceres, Assistant Pastor at Peace Missionary Baptist Church, these dedicated individuals are committed to serving Christ through their ministry work at Lincoln. 5 Male Chorus Picnic The annual Male Chorus Picnic is always a festive event with good food, lots of fun and wonderful fellowship. This year s event followed the same script and did not disappoint. It was enjoyed by all who attended! Fall Revival Our Fall Revival was truly a spirit-filled event. The Rev. Latonya Agard, Pastor of Bazzel Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Fuquay Varina, lifted our spirits through an inspired series of messages. Speaking from the books of Exodus, Mark and Philippians, she used God s Word to relate biblical events to the contemporary lifestyle that we live today. Her words of encouragement touched each night and reminded us of God s awesome power to help us, to heal us and to provide for our every need. 6 Musician s Note FOREWORD There is nothing worse than having the gift to hear and produce gospel music without the gift of accurate timing. A good percussionist guarantees accuracy of timing and syncopation. God has blessed me to again work with Mr. Bobby Hamm Jr., a master percussionist trained both formally and by the experience of working for God in His house. Added to this is the double blessing of being able to watch yet another of God's gifted, master Langston Whitlock, develop that which God has left in his care. So what do they do and why is it important to the music ministry. Brother Bobby took time out to tell Lincoln about his gift... Robin C Gillespie, DOMM A percussionist (drummer) is a musician who plays drums, which includes a drum kit and accessory based hardware. Accessory based hardware includes the following: an assortment of pedals and standing support mechanisms, portable hardware, and/or any musical instrument that can be hit, scraped, shaken, or plucked such as a wood block. The term percussionist applies to a musician who performs with musical instruments of numerous diverse shapes, sizes and applications. Most contemporary western ensemble bands for Jazz, Gospel, Pop, Rhythm and Blues (R&B), Rock, etc., include a drummer for purposes of, but not limited to, timekeeping. Drummers in ensembles may also include melodic based mallet percussion including, but not limited to, vibraphone, marimba and or the xylophone. First and foremost, a drummer is a musician that performs music on the multi-percussion instrument known as the drum set, which usually consists of a bass drum (with pedal), a floor tom, tom-toms, a snare drum, hi-hats, a ride cymbal, and a crash cymbal. The primary function of the drummer is to keep time or provide a steady tempo and rhythmic foundation. In my opinion, this roll serves as a human metronome. However, in other musical styles, such as World, Jazz, Classical, and Electronica, the function of a drummer is often shifted from "time keeper" to soloist, whereby the main melody becomes the rhythmic development generated by the drummer or percussionist. There are many tools that a drummer can use for either timekeeping or soloing. These include cymbals (china, crash, ride, splash, hi-hats, etc.) auxiliary percussion (bells, Latin drums, cowbells, temple blocks) and many others. Also there are single, double, and triple bass pedals for the bass drum. Given my playing style, I like to work on digital drums the best because a variety of different sounds can be produced with the software installed (not to mention it's easily portable to travel with if needed to play at different venues). As for me, I just love to play with all kinds of music. Jazz and Gospel are my favorites. I just love to use the gifts that God gave me to praise him! - by Bobby L. In return for their efforts, staff members Clifton Daye and DeDreana Freeman attended a recent morning worship service to offer thanks and award certificates to each participating member.

Our world needs more love, grace, and gentleness with one another. Since Halloween is this month, let's pull the mask off negative thoughts that would try to parade as our thinking. Strip the costume from anger, hatred, revenge, and unkindness. We don't want to be tricked by negative emotions or behaviors. We want to treat each other with the highest regard. Let's work on putting these beatitudes to good use in our daily lives. The "Be Attitudes" are all about being honest and sincere. These "attitudes" change our character (Beatitudes 1-4) and guide us in getting along with others (Beatitudes 5-8). Beatitudes are the stepping stones to better thinking, better behaving, better healing, and better relationships. Who taught them? [JESUS] What are beatitudes? [Rules of happiness] When were they taught? [1st century AD about 2000 years ago, but still applicable today] Where would you find the Beatitudes? [Matt 5:3-12; Luke 6:20-26] Why are they important? [They summarize Jesus' teachings, represented by how he lived and how he healed sin, disease, and death.] How are the Beatitudes constructed? [Each has a REQUIREMENT to be met in order to receive the REWARD]
