1 The Testament August 2016 Lincoln Memorial Baptist Church Home When The Roll Is Called Every now and then, we find ourselves struggling for answers as we witness and accept the Will of our Heavenly Father. When people that we grow fond of are suddenly taken from us, we search for meaning in their unexpected departure. We grieve, recover, and hold firm to our belief that our God makes no mistakes and that we ll understand it better by and by. For who knows a person s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. (1 Corinthians 2:11) The untimely death of Bro. Charles Bailey has caused many of us to search for answers. And while we refer to his passing as untimely, we know and understand that it was in God s plan all along. Charles understood this as well. During many discussions on issues that required patience, Charles would often say that God works on His timetable, not ours. God s timetable removed Charles from our presence, but we know that a reunion with Charles and others who have transitioned is in God s plan for us. His Word tells us that we will be rewarded for our faith and for the works that demonstrate that faith. Throughout his trials and challenges, Charles never lost his faith and trust in God s Word. His love for God was constantly on display. The righteous man perishes, and no one lays it to heart; devout men are taken away, while no one understands. For the righteous man is taken away from calamity; he enters into peace; they rest in their beds who walk in their uprightness. (Isaiah 57:1-2) Unlike the sudden loss of Charles, the passing of our dear Bro. Archie Perry did not catch us off guard. A faithful and seasoned member, Bro. Perry was a constant presence in our midst until his declining health limited his ability to be with us. Although - by Deacon Dean Jernigan challenged by his visual impairment, Archie was an active member of the Male Chorus and the Laymen s League. For the past few years, he lived in a nursing home and was moved to Hospice care not long before his departure. On several occasions, the Male Chorus would visit with Archie to show love, give support and reflect on his work in our Father s vineyard. By all accounts, Bro. Perry remained steadfast in his faith in God s Word. And I heard a voice from heaven saying, Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on. Blessed indeed, says the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them! (Revelation 14:13) Together in the Male Chorus, Charles and Archie sang the robust, spirited and moving song - Home When The Roll Is Called. It is one of my all time favorite Male Chorus songs and one that is always well received by the Lincoln family. Led by Charles, the song speaks of meeting mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers - in long white robes, on the streets of heaven. Oh what a meeting, Oh what a greeting - home when the roll is called! We take comfort in visualizing a roll call for those who have left us and journeyed to their heavenly home. As they gather around the throne of our Heavenly Father, and as their names are called out among those assembled, we can sense the peacefulness and satisfaction as Charles and Archie joyfully reply - present! He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away. (Revelation 21:4) We thank God for the time spent with Charles and Archie and we will cherish the memories of the moments Durham, NC shared with them. Let us continue to hold steadfast to God s Word and to accept His Will. Rest assured that if we follow the instructions that He has provided for us, then we too can be home when the roll is called. In Memoriam Bro. Charles Bailey April 28, July 12, 2016 Bro. Archie Perry November 5, July 16, 2016 Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints. Psalm 116:15 I realize that sometimes in this life you're gonna be tossed by the waves and the currents that seem so fierce, but in the word of God I've got an anchor; and it keeps me steadfast and unmovable despite the tide. But if the storms don't cease, and if the wind keeps on blowing, my soul has been anchored in the Lord. - My Soul Has Been Anchored In The Lord
2 Habakkuk 2:2-3 And the Lord answered me, and said, Write the Vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. For the Vision is for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry. Blessings in Disguise God sends His little angels in many forms and guises. They come as lovely miracles that God alone devises, For He does nothing without purpose everything s a perfect plan To fulfil in bounteous measure all He ever promised and Every little angel with a body bent and broken Or a little mind unknowing or little words unspoken Is just God s way of trying to reach out and touch the hands Of all who do not know Him and cannot understand That often through an angel whose wings will never fly The Lord is pointing out the way to His eternal sky, Where there will be no handicaps of body, soul, or mind, And where all limitations will be dropped and left behind So accept these little angels as gifts from God above, And thank Him for this lesson in faith and hope and love. - Cathy Pinto Happy Birthday to our August Birthday Celebrities! 6 -submitted by Sis. Earleen Sharrock Respect means that we should: o Avoid insulting, interrupting or being rude to other people. o Listen to, and treat others with honor and consideration. o Show concern, love, care and kindness to all we meet and interact with. o Show respect for the property, belongings and possessions of other people. We need to respect other people, so that we can earn their respect in return. We also need to show respect to our parents, friends, teachers and authorities and above all, to God. Proverbs 9:10 tells us that: "The fear (or respect) of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." Instead of being insulting, interrupting or being rude to others, we need to be respectful to them and treat them with kindness, love and care. The Bible teaches children to respect their parents. Ephesians 6:1-3 says: "Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right (it pleases the Lord). Honour your father and mother... that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth." The Bible also teaches us to respect others and older people. 1 Peter 2:17 says, "Show proper respect to everyone" and Leviticus 19:32a says, "Rise in the presence of the aged and show respect for the elderly." Does your behavior and attitude show respect for others? If not, then start showing respect today and be kind and have good manners. This begins when you put the needs and interests of others before your own. Are you willing to do this? Most importantly we must obey, serve and worship God with reverence and respect. In Psalm 119:15, David set out to do this: "I will think about Your commandments and teachings, and have respect to Your ways." Next time you go to church, be on your best behavior and remember that God is right there with you. When you pray, close your eyes and concentrate on God. Leviticus 19:32b says: "Worship God with reverence." So when you sing praises and worship, think how big and good God is and how much He loves you. One thing I know is that if you have respect, other people will respect you as well. God will bless your life and you will grow as a Christian in a way that will be pleasing to Him. Why not start today and ask God to help you respect all people?
7 Respecting Others -submitted by Sis. Earleen Sharrock Look prayerfully at your life and answer the questions honestly. Also write down what you should do in order to improve your performance in each area: True Respect: Does your behavior and attitude show disrespect for others? True respect and good manners begin when we learn to put the needs and interests of others before our own. Does your daily interaction with others include: "Please", "Thank you" and "Excuse me"? Respect for God: Read Psalm 119:15 - Do you obey and serve God and worship Him with reverence and respect? Respect for Parents: Read Ephesians 6:1-3 - Do you respect, honor and obey your parents? Respect for Authority: Read 1 Peter 2: Do you show respect for those in authority by keeping the laws of the country? Respect for Others: Read 1 Peter 2:17 and Leviticus 19:32 - Are you kind to, and respect family, friends, and strangers and older people? Growing like Jesus: Read Ephesians 4:32 - Do you show kindness and love to others and do you have a Christ-like behavior which brings "favor with man"? Conclusion: As you grow as a Christian, you will have the satisfaction of seeing your life shine as a witness to all, bringing honor to God and drawing others to His Son. Lastly, God will have respect for you, as Leviticus 26:9,12 tells us: "I will look on you with favor (have respect for you)... I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be My people." Memory Verse: God Bless! 1 Peter 2:17, "Show proper respect to everyone." Copyright Sharon Ministries
