Hamilton Conference Halton Presbytery Great Opportunities: Carlisle/Kilbride Pastoral Charge is in a transition of leadership with Rev. Diane Blanchard leaving after 14 years. The relationship between Carlisle and Kilbride is a positive and co-operative one. We thank Diane for her dedicated service to our Pastoral Charge. Diane has accepted a position on the staff of Hamilton Conference. History: The Carlisle/Kilbride Pastoral Charge is a two-point charge historically connected since the early 1800 s in the farming communities of Carlisle and Kilbride. These two villages are nestled in an increasingly affluent area centrally located to all amenities and services. We continue to embrace the new families who bring an urban subdivision flavour to the area they call home. Carlisle has a population of about 2400 with Kilbride just less than This community is very attractive for its quiet country living atmosphere. Community Profiles: A leisurely thirty-minute drive from either church of the Carlisle/Kilbride Pastoral Charge will bring you to any of the neighbouring communities Hamilton, Milton, Kitchener, Cambridge, Guelph, Burlington and Oakville. To travel further afield we are central to a network of major highways and Go Train Services. Educational facilities, health care, shopping, sports, entertainment, and any other desired services are abundant and close at hand. Although the two churches are only a five-minute drive apart, they are positioned in a unique situation residing in two different municipalities. Both villages have similar demographics. Carlisle is part of the City of Hamilton located in East Flamborough. The Carlisle Church participates with the neighbouring Hamilton Churches in activities such as The World Day of Prayer. Kilbride is part of the City of Burlington in Halton region. We encourage the nurturing of current relationships, and hope for the fostering of new partnerships in this growing community. Both communities consist of several subdivisions surrounded by a farming community. The area consists mainly of single-family dwellings on ½ acre or larger lots. Carlisle has Eaton Place, a senior s residence, in the heart of town. Residents in these communities often have long commutes, busy schedules, with high expectations, and value their time. They are striving for calm and a sense of order with worship allowing them to be fulfilled spiritually. There are also a number of retired folk and we have an active farming community who reside in our area. 3

Carlisle/Kilbride Pastoral Charge Church Structure: Both churches have individual boards that meet regularly. The joint board meets four times a year or as needed. Committees of the board meet separately as needed to complete the work of the churches. 8

Carlisle/Kilbride Pastoral Charge: Community Rich with Opportunities: The Carlisle/Kilbride Pastoral Charge has one full time ordained minister 78% Carlisle and 22% Kilbride. The two churches operate in a manner relatively independently. We share joint summer services and have other joint services as decided collaboratively by the joint board. Our vision is clear we have great opportunities to lead a viable charge at the center of our community and look to grow and be as vibrant as the community around us. Our theology is a Bible-based learning style ranging from traditional to contemporary. Within the congregations, there is a range of styles enjoyed. The desire to offer a service midweek and accommodate the busy schedules of our families resulted in the very successful adoption of Messy Church attended by young children and their families. Our communion style currently invites all to the table, including children, and is offered monthly. Time for fellowship at coffee hour is also a highlight and occasional lunches are enjoyed. Carlisle United Church: Motto: Pray Love Serve We are people who seek to experience and honour God in our lives. Prayer is a pathway to a relationship with God that takes many forms. As we open ourselves to God in prayer, God touches our lives and through us, may touch others. We are all learners. You are welcome to join us in learning to pray and in practicing prayer. We are a people called by Jesus to love one another and this world. In relationships of respect where each person is welcomed, we witness to the love that Jesus has for all people. The community of faith seeks to include all ages and provide an external family of faith. We also seek to do as Jesus asks and love our neighbour as ourselves. Therefore, we ask the question: Who is our neighbour? We are a people who express our love of God and our call to follow Jesus in serving and blessing the world around us. We want to make the world a better place as we share God s love with others. From hospitality to the food bank, the Ontario Early Years children and parents, and the Scouting and Guiding groups to reaching out to the offshore workers and nannies in the community, we seek to serve our neighbours and the world in Jesus name. Join Us. Learn with us. Grow in faith & love with us. Bless this world with us. 9

Carlisle Resource Profile Rich in History: Carlisle United Church is a historic brick and stone building located on the banks of Twelve-Mile Creek. We are rich with history. As the sun shines through to our sanctuary the beautiful stained glass windows are revealed. They are a true beauty to behold. The messages they share truly lift our spirit and evoke the connection between Christ and the world. Our 250 seat sanctuary received an extensive face lift in 2013, creating a stage-like area at the front allowing for flexibility of use, from concert stage to a more traditional pulpit setting. Our sanctuary also makes use of the balcony that overlooks the sanctuary from the back of the church. Our front entrance consists of a Honduras mahogany door refurbished in On Sunday morning, our bell tower rings out a welcome across the village. On special occasions, the carillon may be heard. The church has a number of meeting rooms (available for rent), a fully functional kitchen, updated furnace, two office areas, and a parlour. Centennial Hall, which houses the Flamborough Food Bank, has storage facilities and additional washrooms. The church office at Carlisle serves as the Pastoral Charge office and is technologically up to date. An office administrator currently works Tuesday to Thursday 9:00am 2:00pm. The minister s hours are more flexible, depending on his/her schedule for pastoral duties. The sanctuary is equipped with a remote controlled projection screen, additional monitor in the choir area, computer, sound system, and hearing assist equipment. Wi-Fi is available throughout the building. Communication with our community is a key priority. In the spring of 2016 a new computerized, electronic sign was installed. Our many church functions are posted as messages, using colour and graphics to add appeal. A key operated elevator from ground level makes Carlisle United Church accessible to all three levels of our building. In 2015/16, we improved the outside stairs and added a ramp that allows easier accessibility to the Food Bank in Centennial Hall. In 2016, the church and our Music Ministry received a very kind donation of a Steinway grand piano, which allows for Royal Conservatory of Music standard. An organ also complements our music program. We are very fortunate to have a young talented Director of Music to lead our choir and invite talented musician colleagues to our church. 10

Boards of Trustees: The Boards of Trustees pay close attention to the investment of funds for both the churches. Trustees are responsible for the insurance policies as applied to the churches and the activities therein. Carlisle Board of Trustees: The Board oversees the cemetery, adhering to guidelines set out by The Bereavement Authority of Ontario. The Memorial Cemetery Fund provides funding for the ongoing maintenance and care of the cemetery and can only be used for that purpose. Investment income and donations are used to support the cemetery's operating expenses. The Manse and Planned Giving Funds are moneys available as per specific guidelines outlined by the Church Board. The Trustees oversee a large parcel of land, including land available for sports (soccer), parking, and the cemetery in which a new Columbarium was built in There are no outstanding mortgages. The members of the property committee, not the Trustees, maintain the church through the property budget. Stewardship: The Board has carried out a low-key stewardship program on a yearly basis, which has helped with budget needs. 12 Carlisle United Church Our Mission: A Celebrating Community of Faith To Strengthen our Relationship to God through Christ with One Another. Carlisle United Church features a family atmosphere where all, from young to old, newcomers to lifelong members are welcomed to grow in relationship with God. Carlisle United Church offers a variety of worship opportunities throughout the year, striving to meet the spiritual needs of our community. The church has a proud tradition of serving God through outreach ministry. We are a busy church supporting youth, adult and community initiatives and programming. In 2016, an informative video highlighting our involvement with our community was created. This My Church is video can be found at our Carlisle United Church website or the link: Carlisle United Church strives to continually adapt and develop to stay relevant as we live our lives in a changing world. Worship Services and Initiatives: Sunday Morning Service: Carlisle United Church (CUC) welcomes all on Sunday mornings at 11:00am to join our traditional worship service with prayer, music, scripture, sermon, contemporary additions, and offertory. Children are important in our congregation and Sunday School is offered weekly with either in class or in service activities. Nursery is also offered during worship for our youngest family members, 3 years and under. A coffee hour follows each service offering an opportunity to socialize, connect and support our fellow congregants. Seasonal Services: In reaching out to our community through the holiday seasons, together with Kilbride United Church (KUC), CUC invites individuals and families to join us for a variety of services including a World Day of Prayer, Blue Christmas Service, Christmas Eve Services, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Morning Services. Table Talk: A reflective group gathers weekly for lunch to study and discuss scripture from the previous Sunday morning service. Prayer Group/Circle: At CUC, we believe that prayer changes lives. It is our privilege to support our community with our daily prayers. Our prayer box, placed at the side entrance of the church and available on our website reminds church and community people that we are available to share their concerns. In addition, a Prayer Circle from Kilbride and Carlisle gathers monthly to pray for one another, our church, our community, and individuals known to us who are ill or grieving or in special need. Each year during Lent, members from our Prayer Group/Circle facilitate a Week of Guided Prayer for all who would like to join. Prayer Shawl Ministry: In times of grief or illness, we pray that God s love will surround people. Talented members of Carlisle United Church express our love to people through the knitting, blessing, and giving of prayer shawls. These prayer shawls are a visible expression of God s love. Messy Church: Community families with young children are invited to join us monthly for an evening meal while enjoying Bible stories, crafts and games. 12

Summer Vacation Bible Camp: With the co-leadership of a vibrant team of teens and young adults from Hamilton Presbytery, CUC hosts a yearly Summer Vacation Bible Camp for more than 60 children. This camp also offers volunteer opportunities to youth from our church and community to help facilitate the group activities. Youth Initiatives and Programming: Scouting and Guiding Groups: Groups for all ages are active in our church and community. These groups meet in our church and lead many community initiatives such as regular paper, bottle drives, garage sales, refurbishing bicycles for local Migrant workers, and Pancake Tuesday Dinner. These groups join us for worship on our Remembrance Day Service and Baden Powell Service. Ontario Early Years: A weekly morning session for families with young children is offered in our church September through June. Daily sessions are offered in Waterdown. Balaclava Public School Award: Annually, Carlisle United Church donates and presents a cash award for a deserving student at Balaclava Public School s graduation ceremony Adult Initiatives and Programming: Friends of the United Church Women s Group: A dedicated group of women join regularly for fun and fellowship, to host luncheons, a Christmas in the Country Bazaar, a Christmas Vendors and Artisan Sale and Funeral Teas (upon request). This vital group is an integral support for church functions such as the Carlisle United Church Spring Festival. They share themselves and their talents working diligently to bake pies to sell throughout the year, as well as making many other delicious treats and creating crafts for their various sales. Their hard work helps support church initiatives and various community charities. Men s Group: This social and supportive group of men from our community meet to informally discuss and reflect on issues of life and faith. This varied group also share their skills and talents such as woodworking and the creation of cutting boards to donate to the church s spring festival. Our Logo: One of our Stained glass windows inspired the symbol for Carlisle United Church - Jesus praying in the garden of Gethsemane. We are disciples of the crucified and risen Christ, looking to the heart of an emptied cross. The rays speak of light in darkness. They evoke the connection between Christ and the world. Rays of light and love reach out to a hurting world. In prayer, we hold our people, and our world in the light. whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life. (John 8:12) 13

Community Initiatives and Programming: The Flamborough Food Bank: Located in Carlisle United Church is open twice weekly and helps more than 100 community households. It is a not-for-profit, community based organization that supplements individual and family households Carlisle United Church Spring Festival: This annual event invites our community to a chicken barbecue, auctions, kids activity area and entertainment. Proceeds supporting our church and several local charities. This event is highly successful selling more than 500 meals annually and it attracts even more to enjoy the community spirit and fun activities. Migrant Workers Dinners: CUC is part of a network of community churches that alternate to provide hospitality to migrant farm workers in our area. Twice a year CUC invites migrant workers for a home-cooked meal, social time, and sharing of clothing and gift donations. This popular event serves and entertains 50 to 80 workers at each dinner and provides an amazing opportunity for fun and comradery among the workers and church members. This summer, we also invited migrant workers to join us Sunday afternoons, offering refreshments, treats, and use of a laptop computer and our Wi-Fi. Carlisle Cares and Shares: Annually, CUC organizes and facilitates a food, new toys/gifts, and cash donation blitz of the entire community. Collected donations support community charities including The Flamborough Food Bank, Salvation Army and Wesley Urban Ministries. Wesley Urban Ministries: CUC annually supports Wesley Urban Ministry s Case for Kids, donates gifts and service to their Christmas Store. We host one of their Sunday dinners and worship services serving close to 200 people in need. Concerts: Each year our Board, choir, and musical leaders organize several music events, welcoming our community to enjoy the music and beauty of our sanctuary. This year we are very grateful to receive the generous gift of a Steinway grand piano. We are excited about the opportunities this gift offers to our church and community. Refugee Sponsorship: Carlisle United Church is part of the Halton-Hamilton Refugee Sponsorship Committee that sponsored and supported the immigration and first year of residency for a family of 19 Syrian refugees. This involvement has been a heartwarming and fulfilling initiative of love and compassion. Members of the family have reciprocated, including visiting CUC for a worship service and helping with our spring festival. Eaton Place: Originally, built with the leadership of Carlisle United Church, this retirement home in the heart of Carlisle, offers senior residents independent living options as well as a variety of amenities and services. This local retirement home offers opportunities for renewed connection and partnership with CUC. 14

Kilbride United Church Mission Statement: To share our Christian Faith with one another and the community. Kilbride United Church worships in a white frame building in the centre of the historic village of Kilbride. The sanctuary was built in 1860 with a number of additions. In 1881 Kilbride Church joined with Carlisle Church to form a pastoral charge that remains in effect today. The sanctuary will hold approximately 100 people, though the normal Sunday attendance is around people. Special services would see a larger attendance. The worship services are currently traditional in structure though the congregation is open to change. The organizational structure in Kilbride United Church includes a church board, and the following committees: Worship and Music, Outreach, Finance, Pastoral Care, Property, Communications, and Ministry & Personnel (joint with Carlisle United Church). The sanctuary at Kilbride United Church has a baby grand piano, an organ, a sound system, and hearing assist devices. In the hall, there is a large flat screen with multimedia and computer presentation capabilities. Who are we at Kilbride? We are neighbours who come together to worship God, and support each other. We are a caring family who pulls together to help a community member who is injured or ill. We are the hosts of a monthly gathering for seniors in the community that includes a nutritious meal and time for fellowship. We are the hosts of an annual gathering for the migrant farm workers in the area including free clothing store, games, a barbeque, and entertainment. We are the hosts of an annual Sharing the Spirit day for the community, serving a pancake brunch, providing local entertainment. We are the congregation who, in cooperation with the local school, collect money, gifts and food for The Wesley Ministries, and others in need at Christmas. We are the choir, providing beautiful music for each Sunday service, led by our talented choir director and organist. We are the people who visit shut-ins, and the elderly in the local nursing homes and hospitals. We are among those praying for the victims of hatred and terrorism. We are the women who knit prayer shawls for those in need of comforting. We are the workers who quietly make repairs and improvements around the church. We are the coffee team preparing coffee for our fellowship time after worship. We are the supporters of the local scouting and guiding units. We are members who organize fundraisers to support our various outreach programs. We are the groups that meet very informally, but get things done! We are the groups having fun together. 17

Carlisle/Kilbride Pastoral Charge Syrian Refugee Sponsorship: A big welcome sign greeted a family of 19 refugees at Toronto International Airport in early Ramsiz was overjoyed to introduce his Parents Yusef and Sofia to Rev. Barbara Morrison, one of the dedicated supporters of this project. Opportunities come from Challenges: The Carlisle/Kilbride Pastoral Charge is no different from many of the mainstream churches struggling to increase membership, provide services, and empower our youth. We want to continue to examine ways to encourage youth involvement with programs like Messy Church, Vacation Bible School, Sunday School, opportunities for volunteer involvement, and community outreach partnerships. We want to continue to use and introduce technology and social media to keep connected with our changing community while still including our valued Keenagers Although we were pleased to have balanced the budget in 2015, and are approaching that for 2016, we are continually looking for ways to improve giving, encourage PAR, enjoy fundraisers, and stimulate growth. Our congregation faces the challenges of a limited pool of volunteers. Limited local housing at a reasonable cost for a new minister may require living in one of the surrounding communities. 19

Carlisle/Kilbride Pastoral Charge: Terms Profile: Carlisle and Kilbride United Churches work together on a Ministry and Personnel Committee to ensure our staff are compensated in accordance with all United Church of Canada guidelines. They work cooperatively with the Finance Committees and the Boards of both churches to ensure a productive, positive, and safe work place. Our Pastoral charge is fully committed to the United Church of Canada s Harassment and Workplace Violence Policy providing a safe, harassment, and violence free environment for worship, work, and study. Position: The Position at our pastoral charge is a full time ordained minister working a 40-hour week. The time allotment is 78% Carlisle and 22% Kilbride, with appropriate flexibility as necessary. Time allotment may vary week to week. Salary Parameters: Salary is commensurate with training, years of service, and geographic location. We have transitioned to the new compensation model. Benefit Package: Benefits include participation in the pension plan of the United Church of Canada as outlined by the church s policy. CPP, EI and WSIB comply with the Government guidelines. Continuing Education and Learning Resources Package for attending workshops/conferences, purchasing books, acquiring spiritual direction, and obtaining electronic and other resources relevant to providing ministry leadership is available, and encouraged. Historically, our pastoral charge has been able to compensate slightly above the United Church recommendations. Housing: Carlisle/Kilbride Pastoral Charge does not have a Manse, but does offer a housing allowance that reflects the cost of housing in the area. Congregants may be willing to assist with a move to keep costs in check. The Carlisle/Kilbride Pastoral Charge is located in an area where many commute both to and from our area. Houses are mainly single-family dwellings in the COL group # 4. The surrounding areas also offer some wonderful, varied housing options to call home thus meeting your needs. 20

Carlisle/Kilbride Pastoral Charge in search of Data: The Joint Needs Assessment Committee worked hard on developing strategies to reach out to both our community and our congregations in search for what we believe are the pastoral needs of our two churches. An electronic survey on the church web sites, hard copy questionnaire mailed out to congregants, and a Town Hall Community meeting were planned and organized. In Kilbride, the surveys were completed during a worship service. Carlisle also had a time for questions on the survey during worship. We were pleased with the results and our findings. We received a higher than expected response on all accounts. Conversation and excitement was in the air. Word Cloud: Responses received on the question of priorities for a new minister were thorough and informative. In the word cloud a graphic representation above the size of the word indicates the frequency of word use communicating the most salient points as stated by our joint congregations. 21

Carlisle/Kilbride Pastoral Charge Be Part of Change Opportunities for Your Input. The total questionnaire package with results is available on request. About ninety questionnaires were sent out by , letter, and personal delivery, and the survey was available online. Seventy-Three responses were received. Our questionnaire asked respondents to identify their top three priorities for a new minister. Some of the key words extracted from the priority comments are listed below. Priorities for a New Minister: Message Leadership Growth Youth Outreach Pastoral Care Responses Pastoral Charge 61% 54% 30% 31% 49% 32% Carlisle 72% 61% 33% 35% 56% 31% Kilbride 32% 37% 21% 21% 32% 37% Some of the keywords used to identify priorities Preach Leadership Growth Children Outreach Sick Sermon Leader Families Young Others Care Worship Delegate New Youth Community Pastoral Bible Involved Increasing Intergenerational Town Visit Biblical Organized Membership Outside Death Faith Personable Group Hospital Message Extravert living Caring Reflection Energetic Lost Lord Approachable Help Inclusive Friendly Relevant Mentor Current Scripture Open Listen Flexible Joyful Communicator The Carlisle/Kilbride Pastoral Charge places our top three priorities as: 1. The Message 2. Leadership 3. Outreach Pastoral Care, Youth, and Growth are closely positioned in 4 th, 5 th, & 6 th places Comments in the responses revealed a wide range of desired characteristics 1. Uplifting message as part of an insightful worship 2. Interactive, less traditional, family friendly, inclusive of children 3. Knowledge of, and involvement in, the community 4. Reach out through visitation of new families and newcomers. 5. Provide a variety in music with consideration of a more contemporary style. 6. The congregants show an interest and willingness to do things differently. 22

Percentage of Respondents Emphasizing this Priority This chart clearly shows how well matched the two churches are as they reflect their priorities. The percentages show slightly differently with more priorities identified by Carlisle respondents. 23

Areas of Importance to the Joint Congregations: A number of questions in the Questionnaire were included to gauge the feelings of importance in a number of areas of church life. The results were aggregated to reveal the relative importance of the various areas of interest. Note: Average is the total of all results divided by the number of responses. Median is the middle number when all the results are ranked from highest to lowest. Mode is the most common response. Outreach as expected was indicated as area of highest of importance in both congregations. The high importance of caring reflects the age of congregations. Prayer was also an area of strong interest to many. 24

What Do our Congregations Do Best? The Carlisle/Kilbride Pastoral Charge is very proud of the outreach in our community. The congregations are like a family, which explains the score for fellowship particularly in Kilbride. While congregations rate worship highly, some feel it could be improved with a more current, uplifting message while others feel a more Bible-based message would help build our Church. Perhaps the addition of a midweek contemporary service would better accommodate busy younger families. Other Revelations: Information received and reviewed from our Town Hall meeting mirrored much of the survey results. Attendees at the Town Hall meeting highlighted the desire for us to make greater use of social media, introduce a welcome wagon for newcomers, and perhaps offer streaming of our services. We need to work more closely with community partners and many feel that the minister s visibility in the community is important. Creative and empowering initiatives can ensure a vibrant church for the future. 25

Our New Minister: If you enjoy meeting new people, like working with youth and children, have an interest in counselling, and want to participate in efforts to strengthen relationships with other community groups, you would find a welcoming home in the Carlisle/Kilbride Charge. Insightful Ministry: We prayerfully hope to call a minister who is a fit with our congregations and will continue to foster strong outreach, fellowship and leadership through worship and community involvement. We are seeking a minister who: Strengths: Is Christ centred Is skilled in delivering an inspirational, relevant, theologically grounded sermon Has effective time management, ability to balance demands & priorities Is an effective communicator and active listener Speaks from the heart Opportunities: Is able to build community partnerships Is committed to church growth empowering, encouraging and enabling Is open to change Emphasizes fellowship and friendship a mentoring individual Aims for Christian education expansion with youth & children Gifts and Talents: Employs worship styles that reflect flexibility Is forward thinking Emphasises pastoral care, empowering both the needy & hurting people Has an energetic, enthusiastic & fun-loving nature Enjoys work with all ages Will help examine music opportunities 26

The countless number of volunteer hours and the many donations of cash, food, and clothing received make it difficult to put a monetary value to these worthwhile causes. The popular Migrant Worker dinners receive donations of door prizes, favours, clothing, food, recycled and repaired bicycles as well as cash donations. Wesley Urban Ministry is supported yearly with food, clothing, hats and mittens as well as cash donations. A group of dedicated volunteers helps at the no charge Christmas store. Cares and Shares and Share the Spirit are two very successful events that collect needed items and funds for a number of charities in the community. Flamborough Food Bank is continually supported by both churches. The Syrian Refugee Family was a most rewarding undertaking that many of us will not forget. 27
