Lesson Name Jesus Teaches His Disciples to PRAY 1 to PRAY Matthew 6:5-13 Pre-K & K Ages 5 & 6 Instructions: Set out washable markers. Have kids turn to a partner and show what someone who s strong and powerful might look like. Afterward, have kids turn to a partner and show what someone who s wise or caring might look like. Tell children to color Jesus using the markers. As kids color, talk about how Jesus was strong, wise, caring, and powerful but he still needed to pray to God the Father. (For additional instructions, see the Teacher Guide.)

Play Thumb Wrestling with your child, and have the winner say a short prayer. Tell your child that we can pray to God at any time before we eat, at bedtime, or when we re playing games. Sit on one side of a low table with your child on the other side. Lay your right arm across the table making a thumbs-up sign, and have your child reach across in a similar way. Hook fingers with your child so that both your thumb and your child s thumb can move freely. The object of the game is to press your opponent s thumb under your thumb and say, We pray to God. Begin the game by singing the words below to the tune of London Bridge. On the words every day, you and your child will begin the game and try to hold down the other person s thumb. The person who succeeds can thank God for something. For example, you might say, Thank you, God, for giving me food today or Thank you, God, for Grandma. ASK k What things do we pray to God for every day? k What things can we pray for together? Dear God in heaven, I will pray, I will pray, I will pray. Dear God in heaven, I will pray every day! This week your child learned that we can pray. Your child committed to one of the following challenges to make prayer a part of his or her life this week. Help your child weave faith into life and follow through on the challenge! k Tell a family member that we can pray, and invite him or her to pray alongside you. k We can pray using songs or by drawing pictures to God. Make up a new song or draw a picture as a new way to pray this week. k If you hear an ambulance or police siren go by your house this week, stop what you re doing and silently ask God to be with all the people involved, including the police officers and ambulance drivers. Show your child how to make prayer sandwiches. Give your child two slices of bread, and assist your child in adding favorite fillings. Put the two pieces of bread together and have your child cut the sandwich into a triangle or diamond shape to represent praying hands. Remind your child that God gives us our daily bread, which includes not only food, but other things we need, too. Fold your hands together, thank God for your snack, and enjoy your time together. ASK k What are some ways God has answered your prayers? Bible Time: This week s Scripture (Matthew 6:5-13) tells us that we can pray anytime and anywhere. Jesus wants us to pray from our hearts and give God our full attention when we pray. Jesus taught us that when we pray, we should honor God, ask him for things we need, ask forgiveness for the bad things we do, and ask for protection from harm. Key Verse: God loved the world so much that he gave his Son, Jesus, so we can live forever in heaven (adapted from John 3:16). Copyright FaithWeaver NOW TM Lesson 1

This week, your child learned that God meets our needs. Your child committed to one of the following challenges to remember that Jesus is trustworthy and will never let us down. Help your child weave faith into life this week and follow through on the challenge! k Before eating with your family, remind everyone that Jesus turned a little bit of fish and bread into enough to feed a crowd! Then thank Jesus for giving you food, too. kthis week, draw a picture of one way God meets your needs. Show your picture to your mom or dad, and ask them to draw a picture, too! k Every night this week, thank Jesus for being so great that you can always trust him to meet your needs! Sing this song with your child to remind you that we can trust Jesus. Sing to the tune of "Mary Had a Little Lamb." Jesus had some bread and fish, Bread and fish, bread and fish. Jesus had some bread and fish. But it wasn't much. We trust Jesus every day, Every way. Hear us say, We trust Jesus every day. We trust Jesus! Into oh so much! Make fun fishy snacks with your child. Use these fun fish snacks to remind your child that when Jesus fed the crowd with only five loaves of bread and two fish, he did an amazing miracle. With your child, assemble a fish like this: Use a dried apricot for the body. Use icing to glue a pretzel tail to the end of the apricot. Then place a little icing and a tiny chocolate chip on the other end of the fish for the eye. Make a bunch of fish to remind you that Jesus turned a little food into a lot! ASK k What surprised you most when you heard how Jesus turned a little food into a bunch of food? k How can knowing what Jesus did help you trust him? k When are times you really need to trust Jesus? Jesus turned that bread and fish, Bread and fish, bread and fish. Jesus turned that bread and fish, Bible Time: This week s Scripture (John 6:1-15) is about a time a huge crowd was following Jesus to hear him teach. Jesus asked one of his friends how they were going to feed the people. His friend was surprised! The friend said, There s no way we can feed all these people. It would take us months to earn that much money! Another of Jesus friends said there was a boy in the crowd who had five loaves of bread and two fish. Jesus had the people sit down, and then he started handing out the bread and fish. And you won t believe what happened that little bit of food fed everyone, and there were even leftovers! It was a miracle! Those people learned that God meets our needs! As each child lights the candles with the glitter, have him or her say something about what heaven might be like. Celebrate that Jesus gives us life in heaven! (For additional instructions, see the Teacher Guide.)

Get out your child s birth certificate, adoption certificate, or birth announcement. Help your child put the document in a frame. Then hang it up on a wall as a reminder that your child is an important and loved member of your family. Take time to reminisce! Ask your child what he or she remembers about past birthdays, and share your memories, too. Celebrate the good memories of the past and the good times to come! ASK k What do you like about being a part of our family? k What s a great thing about being a part of God s family? Jesus told Nicodemus that no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again. Nicodemus asked a very logical question and one your child may ask as well: How can a person be born when he or she is old? Nicodemus pointed out that surely a person cannot enter his mother a second time and be born again. When it comes to teaching abstract concepts to concrete thinkers, the best place to begin is with what s already understood. Your child understands being born into this world your child lives with people who love and care for one another. When you help your child believe in Jesus, you will be helping him or her learn that we will be accepted, loved, and born into God s heavenly family to live forever with him and with everyone who believes in Jesus! Bible Time: This week s Scripture (John 3:1-17) tells us that Jesus gives us life in heaven if we believe in him. One night, a Jewish leader named Nicodemus came to Jesus and wanted to talk with him. Jesus told Nicodemus, No one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again. Jesus explained that when we believe in him, we re born into God s heavenly family to live forever with him and with everyone who believes in Jesus. What a great new birth to celebrate! Key Verse: God loved the world so much that he gave his Son, Jesus, so we can live forever in heaven (adapted from John 3:16). This week, your child learned that Jesus gives us life in heaven. Your child committed to one of the following challenges to thank Jesus for giving him or her life in heaven. Help your child weave faith into life this week and follow through on the challenge! k Whenever you see the color blue, thank Jesus for giving you life in heaven. k Tell someone about what you learned, and ask what he or she thinks heaven will be like. k Think about what food you hope will be in heaven. Ask your mom or dad to make that food for dinner. Remind your child that when we believe in Jesus, we are born into God s heavenly family. Celebrate this new birth by making birthday treats. Purchase miniature ready-made graham cracker pie crusts and your child s favorite instant pudding. Help your child make the pudding and fill the miniature pie shells. Top the treats with whipped cream and colorful sprinkles. ASK k What do you like about our family on earth? k What do you think it will be like to be part of God s family in heaven? k Who can we tell that Jesus gives us life in heaven? After a meal this week, have your child retell what he or she learned in the Bible this week. Then light candles on the birthday treats, and celebrate being born into God s family! Remind children about the life-giving living water that Jesus brings to everyone who believes in him! (For additional instructions, see the Teacher Guide.)

Dig into the life God reveals to us through nature by going on a Different Perspective walk with your child. First observe the world from your child s perspective by squatting down to your child s level. Then place your child on your shoulders, or help him or her onto a playground ladder to see God s creation from your perspective. Look at things such as flowers or buds, bugs, and tree trunks from the different perspectives, and talk about the differences. Celebrate the beauty of life, and rejoice in the life God gave through his Son, Jesus. ASK khow did things look different from a different level? k What things are you thankful for today? Bible Time: This week s Scripture (John 4:5-42) tells us that Jesus loves everyone. When Jesus traveled through Samaria, he met a woman at a well and told her about the living water that he gives. Jesus brings life to our hearts and to everyone who believes in him! Jesus knew many things about the woman s life, and Jesus knows every detail of our lives, too. The woman went to tell others about Jesus, and she knew that she d never need anything more than Jesus. Key Verse: People who believe in Jesus will live forever (adapted from John 11:25). This week, your child learned that Jesus loves everyone. Your child committed to one of the following challenges to enjoy new life with Jesus. Help your child weave faith into life this week and follow through on the challenge! k Draw a picture of a heart and give it to a family member. Say that Jesus loves everyone. k Go outside and explore nature. Find ways that God takes care of all his creations, including you. Let that remind you of how Jesus loves everyone. k Ask your mom or dad for an empty milk jug, plastic bottle, or cereal box. See how many new things you can make from the container. Let it be a reminder of how Jesus loves you and wants to make you new. Help your child make living water a treat that is a refreshing reminder of how Jesus loves everyone. Have your child empty a one-liter bottle of unflavored seltzer into an empty pitcher. Then let your child add a 12-ounce can of thawed orange juice concentrate and stir. Thinly slice an orange, and let your child add the slices and some ice cubes to the orange drink in the pitcher. Help your child carefully pour the drink into glasses. Thank God for the special drink, and then enjoy! ASK khow do you feel when you drink this special drink? k What s it like to be really thirsty? to finally get a drink? k How is Jesus like a refreshing drink? Five- and six-year-olds understand that they need certain things to live, such as food, water, air, and sleep. Use this lesson to help your child understand that God creates life in plants, in animals, and in us. God knows what we need, and he gives us food, water, and air things that bring life to our bodies. Help your child celebrate that Jesus loves everybody and offers life that lasts, even after our earthly bodies die. Jesus brings us life now and forever! Copyright FaithWeaver NOW TM Lesson 4

Afterwards, have kids stick the bandages on the pictures that show kind actions. (For additional instructions, see the Teacher Guide.)

Work with your child to create heartshaped Love Cakes to give to neighbors to show them that you care. Purchase a box of cake mix. Read the directions, and help your child add the ingredients and mix the batter. Have your child place baking liners in muffin tins, and fill the cups about halfway. To make the cakes heart-shaped, place small marbles between each liner and the muffin tin. Bake the Love Cakes as the recipe directs, let them cool, and remove the marbles. Use stickers to decorate the outsides of the liners, and have fun helping your child decorate the treats with frosting or sprinkles. Then deliver the treats to your neighbors, and practice being loving and caring. ASK khow does God show his love for us? k How can we show love to others? Let loved ones know that you care by making and sending un-valentines! Work with your child to make a list of friends and family. Then collect supplies such as construction paper, scissors, glue, glitter, and lace. Spend an afternoon with your child creating a few special notes to send just because. ASK kwho are you sending your un-valentines to? Why? Bible Time: In this week s Scripture (Luke 10:25-37), Jesus tells about the good Samaritan to show us an example of loving others. While others had passed by a man who d been robbed and left for dead, the Samaritan showed kindness to the stranger and took care of him, just as God takes care of us. God wants us to love others. Key Verse: People who believe in Jesus will live forever (adapted from John 11:25). k Why do you think God wants us to be kind to others? Your child learned that God wants us to care for others. ASK ktalk about what you liked the most about our visit. k What kinds of hopes do people have before they come to the hospital? k How does Jesus give us hope? Encourage your child to make a snack that he or she can use to retell the Scripture. Cut the top off of a muffin, and have your child carefully hollow out the bottom half of the muffin. Then place the top back on the muffin to make a tomb. Wrap a baby carrot in a strip of lettuce, and then place it inside the tomb to represent Lazarus in grave clothes. Ask your child to tell you what they remember about the Bible, and then remind your child that Jesus is life! Remind children that God created everything in the heavens and on the earth! (For additional instructions, see the Teacher Guide.)

Go on a scavenger hunt with your child. Look for objects that are round, square, oval, rectangular, triangular, or diamond-shaped, such as rocks, stepping-stones, road signs, or car tires. Pick an object and show your child that as you follow along the object s outer edge, there s no distinct beginning or end. ASK k What does it mean that God has no beginning or end? k What s it like knowing that God will always be there for you? Remind your child that God is the Creator of everything, and then encourage your child to make a snack. Once it s frozen, have your child set the bottom of the Bible Time: This week s Scripture (Acts 17:16-31) tells us that God created heaven and earth. When Paul was preaching and teaching in Athens, he saw a sign that said To an unknown god. Paul taught the people about our one and only true God so that they would know! Paul told them about Jesus, and he taught them that God is the creator of everything in the heavens and on the earth. Paul encouraged the people to repent and to know that because of Jesus life, death, and resurrection, we can live forever. Paul wanted everyone to know about our everlasting God who created everything! Key Verse: We can teach the world about Jesus (adapted from Matthew 28:19-20). bowl in warm water to loosen the yogurt. ASK k What did you like about creating your snack? k What s your favorite part of God s creation? k How can we thank God for the beautiful earth? Your child learned that God created heaven and earth. Your child committed to one of the following challenges to thank God for his creation in daily life. Help your child weave faith into life this week and follow through on the challenge! k Take a walk with your mom or dad, and point out the things you see that are pretty or that you like. When you finish your walk, thank God for all the beautiful things in creation. k Draw a picture of some of your favorite creations.
