THE ATEHETIAL HURH The Ten oandents The Third oandent
GOOD SHEPHERD LUTHERAN HURH Kearney, Nebraska Sunday, July 24, 2016 WELOME TO GOOD SHEPHERD! We are so happy you could join us today! If we can assist you in any way with questions about our confession of faith, spiritual struggles, understanding our liturgical service, or any other need, please let us know. It is our prayer that the Gospel of Jesus hrist will strengthen and cofort you. For your convenience, Listening Devices are available for those who need assistance in hearing the service. Please speak with an usher if you need one. A Nursery is also available and is equipped with a speaker so that a inial aount of the service is issed. The nursery is located in the hallway just off the entryway (first door on left). ABOUT THE THIRD OMMANDMENT In his Large atechis, Luther begins by defining "holy day" and by explaining how by hrist's tie the true understanding of the Sabbath had been corrupted. Because the Third oandent describes Jewish practice int eh Old Testaent, Luther plainly states that the external for of this law does not apply to hristians in the New Testaent. It is an error to say that Sunday is the New Testaent Sabbath. However, the internal for of this coand still applies to hristians today. hristians should regularly devote theselves to a day when they can hear and learn God's Word, so that they do not despise it. For this reason Luther coends worship on Sunday for the sake of good order. In this sense, every day for the hristian should be a "holy day" consecrated by God's Word. Luther presents a clever play on words when he suggests there is only one "holy thing." The Geran word for "holy things" (Heiligtu) was often used to refer to relics, ites believed to have belonged to the apostles and other saints. Yet Luther says the only true "holy thing" is God's Word, which consecrates all things and apart fro which nothing we do or say is holy. THE ATEHETIAL HURH SERIES In the Preface to his Large atechis, Luther writes that there is a iniu of knowledge that every hristian should have. The 'iniu knowledge' includes the 10 oandents, Apostles reed, Lord's Prayer, Holy Baptis, The Keys and onfession, and the Lord's Supper. Luther writes, Whoever lacks this knowledge cannot be counted aong hristians nor be 2
aditted to the sacraents. (This is part of the reason we ask that our youth attend three years of onfiration/atechis lass.) Luther copares soeone who calls hiself a hristian but doesn t know the iniu, to soeone who calls hiself a craftsan but doesn't know the rules and techniques of his craft (e.g., A carpenter who doesn't know what a haer or saw are or how to use the). The proper place for instruction in the 'inius' is in the hoe your hoe. Luther wrote his Sall atechis to help the head of the house instruct his faily in the 'inius' of the hristian faith. Whoever the head of your faily in these atters ight be, we would like to use these suer Sundays for instruction in the 10 oandents here, with the intent that you would continue the discussion in your own faily during the week even if that s just you. The insert in the bulletin each Sunday is to help you bring what we do here into your hoe during the week. Luther writes, It is the duty of every faily head to exaine his children and household ebers at least once a week to see what they have learned of the atechis. So, as the head of the faily in this house, you are asked to eorize the particular oandent of the Week and the explanation fro Luther s Sall atechis and invite you, if applicable, to have your faily do the sae. Luther says that if a household eber will not do this, they should not be given supper. Luther did not ean this in the context of the Lord s Supper. But we will leave it up to your own conscience as to whether or not you deserve to eat the goodies served during Fellowship after the service today (We hope and pray that you know we re just kidding ). HOLY OMMUNION IS OFFERED TODAY As hristians who believe that the Bible is inspired by God and that every word written in it is God s holy word, we believe that we receive the body and blood in, with, and under the bread and wine. While this is soething that goes beyond our huan understanding, our faith allows us to accept this as true. God warns us in the Bible that anyone who doesn t understand this teaching or who denies this real presence of hrist s body and blood will do daage to his or her soul if not properly taught first (1 orinthians 11:27-29). As a congregation we care about people and about the spiritual well-being of individuals, especially those attending the Lord s Table today. If you are a guest and desire to coune, please speak to the pastor before the service. Our altar is open to those who confess oneness with us in doctrine, are not under church discipline in another congregation, and are ebers of our congregation, one of our sister congregations in the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod [WELS], or a eber of our sister synod, the Evangelical Lutheran Synod [ELS].!3
THE DIVINE SERVIE Divine Service I hristian Worship: Suppleent, pg. 15 The Invocation, which uses the words spoken over us at our baptiss, reind us of who we are (children of God) and what we are ebers of the hurch of hrist. Whenever the Pastor akes the sign of the cross ( ) throughout the service, worshippers are encouraged to physically ake the sign of the cross over the head and the heart to reinforce their reebrance of their baptis. OPENING HYMN Speak, O Savior; I A Listening W 283 INVOATION Please stand. In the nae of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Aen. ONFESSION OF SINS : Our help is in the nae of the LORD. Psal 124:8 Who ade heaven and earth. I said, I will confess y transgressions to the LORD. Psal 32:5 And you forgave the iniquity of y sin. Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking hi in the nae of our Lord Jesus hrist to grant us forgiveness. Silence for editation on God s Word and for self-exaination as you consider your thoughts, words, and actions according to the Ten oandents. Holy and erciful Father, I confess that I a by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in y thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishent both now and in eternity. But I a truly sorry for y sins, and trusting in y Savior Jesus hrist, I pray: Lord, have ercy on e, a sinner.!4
LORD, HAVE MERY Kyrie ABSOLUTION God, our heavenly Father, has been erciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of hrist and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the nae of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Aen. In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord! GLORY BE TO GOD Gloria in Excelsis Know ye, then sin, death, devil, and everything that assails e that you are issing the ark. I a not one of those who are afraid of you. For hrist, y dear Lord, has presented to e that triuph and victory of His by which you were laid low. And fro this very gift of His I derive y nae and a called a hristian. There is no other reason. My sin and death hung about His neck on Good Friday, but on the day of Easter they had copletely disappeared. This victory He has bestowed on e. This is why I do not worry about you. Martin Luther!5
The canticle, Gloria in Excelsis, which is Latin for, Glory in the highest, is a song in which hristians praise God by proclaiing the great things he has done to accoplish our rescue fro sin. A for of the hristas Angel s song (Luke 2), Glory to God in the highest has been a hristian song of praise in the Divine Service since the 4th century.!6
The Service of the Word SALUTATION The Lord be with you. And also with you. This greeting, known as the Salutation, has deep roots in hristian worship and arks the beginning of the Word section and the Sacraent section (p. 14) of the service. The traditional wording of the congregation s response is And with your spirit.!7
PRAYER OF THE DAY ollect We confidently close the prayer with a resounding, Aen. Yes, it shall be so. Let us pray. By Your Word and Spirit, draw us away fro our restless labor that we ight find rest in You alone, erciful God. Grant that, fearing and loving You above all things, we ay never despise the preaching of Your Word of Life, but hold it sacred and gladly hear and learn it; through Jesus hrist, our Lord. Aen. God sets aside the Sabbath. In the Old Testaent, Saturday is the Sabbath Day. When hrist fulfilled the whole law, he liberated God s people fro the obligation to observe the Sabbath given to the people of Israel in the Old Testaent. All days belong equally to God. Nevertheless, faith in hrist oves God s people to respond to his grace in worship: to hear his Word, to receive his gifts int eh Sacraents, to praise hi and give thanks to hi for his ighty works, and to call on hi in prayer.such worship is the constant response of faith to God s grace. Be seated. FIRST LESSON Genesis 2:1-3 1 Thus the heavens and the earth were copleted in all their vast array. 2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested fro all his work. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and ade it holy, because on it he rested fro all the work of creating that he had done. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! PSALM OF THE DAY Psal 84:1,2,4,5,8-12 How lovely is your dwelling place, LORD Alighty! My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the LORD; y heart and y flesh cry out for the living God. a place near your altar, LORD Alighty, y King and y God. Blessed are those who dwell in your house; they are ever praising you. Blessed are those whose strength is in you,!8
whose hearts are set on pilgriage. Hear y prayer, LORD God Alighty; listen to e, God of Jacob. Look on our shield, O God; look with favor on your anointed one. Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of y God than dwell in the tents of the wicked. For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold fro those whose walk is blaeless. LORD Alighty, blessed is the one who trusts in you. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Aen. SEOND LESSON Hebrews 4: Therefore, since the proise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. 2 For we also have had the good news proclaied to us, just as they did; God s people issed rest in the Proised Land through their unbelief. This is a warning to us. God calls us to trust hi and to enter into the rest that he has enjoyed since the copletion of creation. In hrist Jesus, we have rest fro the accusation of the Law. The Holy Spiritless us to trust in hrist, granting us everlasting peace.!9
Following each lesson, the Pastor announces, The Word of the Lord. We know fro Scripture that God coes to us through the Means of Grace, that is the Gospel that is found in the Word and the Sacraent. So, within the service God has coe to us convicting us in our sin through the Law, and pronouncing forgiveness through the life-giving Gospel. The congregation in response to such love praises the Lord in reply: Thanks be to God! but the essage they heard was of no value to the, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed. 3 Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said, So I declared on oath in y anger, They shall never enter y rest. And yet his works have been finished since the creation of the world. 4 For soewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: On the seventh day God rested fro all his works. 5 And again in the passage above he says, They shall never enter y rest. 6 Therefore since it still reains for soe to enter that rest, and since those who forerly had the good news proclaied to the did not go in because of their disobedience, 7 God again set a certain day, calling it Today. This he did when a long tie later he spoke through David, as in the passage already quoted: Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts. 8 For if Joshua had given the rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. 9 There reains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; 10 for anyone who enters God s rest also rests fro their works, just as God did fro his. 11 Let us, therefore, ake every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their exaple of disobedience. 12 For the Word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any doubleedged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and arrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden fro God s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of hi to who we ust give account. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!!10
VERSE OF THE DAY Hebrews 4:12 Alleluia! For the Word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any doubleedged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and arrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Alleluia! THE HOLY GOSPEL Luke 10:38-42 Please stand. The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, chapter ten. 38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he cae to a village where a woan naed Martha opened her hoe to hi. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord s feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be ade. She cae to hi and asked, Lord, don t you care that y sister has left e to do the work by yself? Tell her to help e! 41 Martha, Martha, the Lord answered, you are worried and upset about any things, 42 but few things are needed or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away fro her. In contrast with Jesus deand for great works in the previous parable of the Good Saaritan (10:25-37), the story of Mary and Martha shows the iportance of faith and rest in Jesus and his Word. Today, we are often so distracted that we neglect what atters ost: God s Word and Sacraents. What we can never earn for ourselves, no atter how uch we scrable, God freely provides through faith in Jesus hrist. This is the Gospel of the Lord.!11
In his Large atechis, Luther begins by defining "holy day" and by explaining how by hrist's tie the true understanding of the Sabbath had been corrupted. Every day for the hristian should be a "holy day" consecrated by God's Word. Luther says the only true "holy thing" is God's Word, which consecrates all things and apart fro which nothing we do or say is holy. A LUTHERAN ONFESSION Large atechis, I:87,89,95,98 What is eant by the coandent: You shall sanctify the holy day? To sanctify the holy day is the sae as to keep it holy. But what is eant by keeping it holy? Nothing else than to be occupied with holy words, works, and life. For the day needs no sanctification for itself. It has been created holy in itself. But God desires the day to be holy to you. Therefore, it becoes holy or unholy because of e, whether I a occupied on that day with things that are holy or unholy. Indeed, we hristians ought always to keep such a holy day and be occupied with nothing but holy things. This eans we should be daily engaged with God s Word and carry it in our hearts and upon our lips. So uch depends upon God s Word. Without it, no holy day can be sanctified. Therefore, we ust know that God insists upon a strict observance of this coandent and will punish all who despise His Word and are not willing to hear and learn it, especially at the tie appointed for the purpose. Know, therefore, that you ust be concerned not only about hearing, but also about learning and retaining God s Word in eory. Do not think that this is optional for you or of no great iportance. Think that it is God s coandent, who will require an account fro us about how we have heard, learned, and honored His Word. This is ost certainly true. Be seated.!12
HYMN OF THE DAY The Ten oandents Are the Law W 285 (1,4,11,12) SERMON Luke 10:38-42 The One Thing Truly Needful REATE IN ME Please stand. During the 16 th and 17 th centuries, Luther s six catechis hyns (on each chief part of the atechis, see above) were the principal catechetical hyns sung in church, school, and hoe. They were frequently cited in catechis serons, and their elodies were eployed in choral and organ catechis usic written by any different Lutheran coposers, ost notably Johann Sebastian Bach. In this hyn Luther presents the Ten oandents in their biblical setting. Moses and hrist, at the beginning and end of the hyn, stand in contradistinction: Moses the servant introduced the deands of the Law; hrist the Mediator fulfills the Law s deands. Be seated. OFFERING Moved by God s love in hrist, by our Offering we offer hi our first and best gifts, purely out of thanks to hi. If you are visiting with us today, please do not feel obligated to give an offering.!13
Through the Prayer of the hurch we heed hrist s coand to love one another. One of the greatest fors of love we can show for our neighbor is to pray for the. PRAYER OF THE HURH Please stand. The Service of the Sacraent SALUTATION Because it has been accepted as a practice in the hristian church, that in the public asseblies of the church after the preaching and hearing of the Word, this Sacraent is celebrated, therefore this custo ust not be departed fro without urgent necessity. It is clear fro Acts 20:7 and 1 or. 11:20,33 that when the [early] hristians did gather at one place, they were accustoed to celebrate the Eucharist. Johann Gerhard PREFAE The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift the up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is good and right so to do. It is truly good and right that we should at all ties and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, alighty and everlasting God, through Jesus hrist, our Lord, who proised that wherever two or three coe together in his nae, there he is with the to shepherd his flock till he coes again in glory. Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy nae and join their glorious song: HOLY, HOLY, HOLY Sanctus!14
PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING Blessed are you, O God our Savior, for you have gathered us here to reeber Jesus sacrifice on our behalf. In this eal you give us his true body and blood, which paid our debt to you and assures us of your forgiveness. For all of your undeserved love toward us, we give thanks and praise to your living and life-giving nae: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Aen. Sanctus eans holy. Used possibly as early as the 2nd century, this canticle was in wide use aong hristians in worship by the 14th century. On Pal Sunday, as the Lord entered Jerusale, the crowds proclaied, Hosanna! which eans, Savior or Rescuer. So also today we sing hosanna! as the Lord coes to us in the Sacraent of the Supper. He indeed has coe to save us fro our sins, and shows us such love in his body and blood in, with, and under the bread and the wine. LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your nae, your kingdo coe, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those!15
who sin against us. Lead us not into teptation, but deliver us fro evil. For the kingdo, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Aen. The Pastor akes the sign of the cross during the Words of Institution, not because it is soe agical incantation or spell, but rather to ark and set apart the bread and wine for the purpose of eating and drinking in the sacraent. WORDS OF INSTITUTION Our Lord Jesus hrist, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat. This is y body, which is given for you. Do this in reebrance of e. Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to the, saying, Drink fro it all of you; this is y blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in reebrance of e. The peace of the Lord be with you always. Aen. The Agnus Dei, which eans Lab of God, is a song included in the Ordinary of the Divine Service. That eans it is included in every Service of the Sacraent. This canticle reinds us that Jesus is God s Lab, who was offered as a sacrifice for sin, once for all. LAMB OF GOD Agnus Dei!16
Be seated. DISTRIBUTION Those who will be receiving Holy ounion today ay wish to read Personal Preparation for Holy ounion, found on page 156 in the front section of the hynal. This page helps us put into practice what the Bible encourages: Everyone ought to exaine theselves before they eat of the bread and drink fro the cup. (1 orinthians 11:28) Prayer suggestions for before and after receiving the Lord s Supper can be found in the hynal on pages and In disissing the counicants, the inister says: Now, ay this true body and blood strengthen and keep you in the true faith to life everlasting. Your sins are forgiven. Go in peace. Aen. Good Shepherd confesses and practices the Biblical teaching of a losed ounion. We ask that only ebers of the Wisconsin Synod [WELS] or the Evangelical Lutheran Synod [ELS] join us at the Lord s Table. If you have questions concerning our counion practice, or would like to inquire about how you, too, can coune with us, please speak with the Pastor following the service.!17
The Nunc Diittis, which is Latin for, Now you disiss, is a anticle that uses the words of the priest, Sieon, found in Luke 2. The Lord proised Sieon that he would see the Savior with his own eyes before his death. When Mary and Joseph brought the baby Jesus to the teple, Sieon held the Son of God in his hands. Out of thanks for the fulfillent of his proise, Sieon praised God with these words. These words are appropriately sung after receiving the Lord s Supper because we held in our hands the body and blood of hrist, the Son of God. Like Sieon, we now depart this place in peace because we have (tasted and) seen the salvation of all people. SONG OF SIMEON Nunc Diittis Please stand. PRAYER O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. And his ercy endures forever. We give thanks, alighty God, that you have refreshed us with this Holy Supper. We pray that through it you will strengthen our faith in you and increase our love for one another. We ask this in the nae of Jesus hrist, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Aen.!18
BLESSING The LORD bless you and keep you. The LORD ake his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The LORD look on you with favor and give you peace. Aen. The blessing of Aaron has been spoken over God s people for over 3,500 years. The Lord said, So they will put y nae on [the], and I will bless the. (cf. Nubers 6:27) Be seated.
