Pensemos también en esas trazas rocosas de nuestra personalidad y nuestra carencia de profundidad, que presentan desafíos a cualquier cosa o persona para que eche raíces. Las espinas por las preocupaciones de la vida y por la seducción de las riquezas, y otras cosas que prefiriéramos no mencionar. Puede algo vivir, respirar, y ni digamos florecer, en la selva de nuestro corazón? My word shall not return to me void, but shall do my will, achieving the end for which I sent it (Isaiah 55:11). Given that the average seed yields 7.5-fold, Jesus opening prediction of a hundredfold is radically optimistic indeed, especially given last week s Gospel: rejection by the wise and learned with unseeing eyes, unhearing ears, unresponsive hearts. Wouldn t we settle for average? A few strong, promising plants? For that matter, look at us! Very much Jesus mixed terrain hearts trampled by hordes of superficial acquaintances, caravans of tradespeople, armies battling for our limited loyalty. Could anything grow on such a life-weary surface? Think too of those rocky edges of personality, our lack of depth, defying anything or anyone to take root. Thorns of worldly anxiety, lure of riches, other things we d rather not mention (Matthew 13:22). Could any living thing breathe, let alone flourish, in the jungle of our hearts? 3 St. Jerome Catholic Church San Antonio, Texas Attention Parishioners If you are a registered parishioner of St. Jerome, you are eligible to receive the archdiocesan newspaper, Today's Catholic! Simply call or the office, and we will send your name and address to begin your subscription. We will gather names and addresses and send them in by the end of July. There is no cost to you! RCIA RCIA is moving The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) class sessions are moving to Sunday mornings. Sessions will be on the same days as the RCIC (Rite of Christian Initiation for Children) and other youth religious education classes. Sessions will begin with 8:30AM Mass each Sunday and conclude at 10:30AM. RCIA sessions are for adults who need to complete their sacraments of initiation which include Baptism, First Eucharist, and Confirmation. The next schoolyear program that will begin on Sunday, September 10, will prepare and enable participants to receive these sacraments at the Easter Vigil Mass in It is also a learning opportunity for those who have completed their sacraments to study more about the Catholic religion. If you are more interested in the RCIA sessions, please contact Kim Pruski at For those adults seeking only the Sacrament of Confirmation, please contact the church office to schedule a meeting with Father Scott. ALSO, the RCIA team of catechists is asking for volunteers. If you are a Catholic in good standing, please consider sharing this time with those who would like to enter into full communion with our church. If you are interested in being on the RCIA team, please contact Kim Pruski at TMIY We are all familiar with the parable from Matthew s Gospel wherein Jesus tells us The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed which a man took and sowed in his field. This seed is often used as an analogy for the work we undertake with faith that God will help a good thing grow. The growth of the mustard seed is not the end of the story, you know. Christ goes on to tell us it is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches. In other words, the seed does not stay the same it becomes a tree that is a home for others. Similarly, the many men, who have been transformed by St. Jerome s TMIY are changing the world around them. Men are becoming better leaders, resulting in healthier relationships with God, their wives, and their families. Marriages are becoming more joyful, thus strengthening the family and their wider community. Young people are finding the answer to tough questions, entering adulthood with the seeds of faith. One of TMIYs goals is to reach every male, young and old, in our community and help them to become a Man after Gods own heart! We all know being a Man of God is not easy in todays society. We must groom and nurture ourselves like the mustard seed so that we too may be fruitful and become a spiritual home for others around us. And what better way to do that than to surround ourselves with Godly people. Join us on July 25th and every other Tuesday there after as we continue our journey into the Catholic Apologetics presented by Mr. Wayne Pape. The fun begins at 6:30pm and lasts till about 8:30pm. 4 July 16, th Sunday in Ordinary Time Sr. Sylvia Ahr Golden Jubilee On Saturday, June 10, 2017, the Benedictine Sisters along with family, staff, Oblates, and friends gathered at the Omega Retreat Center in Boerne, Texas, to honor Sr. Sylvia Ahr for 50 years of Consecrated Life. The event included Liturgy, a reception, and dinner. Congratulations and blessings to Sr. Sylvia on her Golden Jubilee! Sr. Sylvia taught many years at St. Benedict and many of our St. Jerome parishioners were students of Sr. Sylvia. Special guests included Sylvia s siblings pictured above: Kathryn O Hanlon, Margie Hassold, (Sister Sylvia), and Frances Sendera, Marshall Ahr, John Ahr, Homer Ahr, and Herman Ahr We would like to thank the Benedictine Sisters in Boerne for giving us permission to use their pictures. This is an exciting time for our parish and parishes throughout the archdiocese. This campaign will have a tremendous impact on the needs of our parish while also enabling our vibrant and growing archdiocese to address the bright future of the Church in South Central Texas. Over the last few months, with the help of lay leadership at St. Jerome Catholic Church and the archdiocease, we have identified our most pressing needs as a parish. We have chose to develop the acreage on the west side of the church where you often see soccer goals with our share of the funds raised through our upcoming On the Way Capital Campaign. The campaign will be led by Fr. Scott and chaired by a team of volunteers to form a Campaign Committee to assist with this important endeavor. We will be officially kicking off the On the Way Capital Campaign at Masses on August 20th. In today s bulletin insert, you will find the Capital Campaign Preview/Frequently Asked Questions brochure that provides more information.
