1 A Prayer for our Diocese God of hope and love, you have called us to be the body of Christ; inspire us in the Diocese of Willochra to worship with joy and energy serve with compassion and be welcoming of others in our communities, so that all will know the good news of Jesus to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be honour and glory forever. Amen. FOLLOWING Jesus... PROCLAIMING his gospel... CONNECTING with his world... and ENJOYING our common life. 4th Series No 111 March 2017 Vocations Month February 2017 February was Vocations Month for the Diocese of Willochra. On 4 February, Port Lincoln had its first Vocations Day, focusing on the west of the Diocese. Sixteen people attended, from as far as Streaky Bay. The Venerable Michael Hillier (Ministry of Spirituality), the Reverend Sister Sandra Sears (CSBC), the Reverend Canon Gael Johannsen (MDO) and the Bishop, the Right Reverend John Stead, all spoke about various aspects of vocation to both Lay and Ordained Ministry. Vocations Day in Port Lincoln (pictured below) was followed by a four day Summer School the next week. Up to fifteen people participated in units of the Local Certificate of Ministry another first for the West Coast. Vocations Day East was held at Gladstone on 18 February. Five people attended and participated in conversation and questions. Recently, the Ministry Formation Team (Gael Johannsen, Michael Hillier, Mary Lewis and Ali Wurm) have done a great deal of research and work on forming people for their leadership ministry in the church of God, both lay and ordained. A process, The Willochra Way was presented to participants at Vocations Day and will soon be available to the wider diocese. Those who are in the process of discernment for ordination, ordinands and those recently ordained will join Formation Groups (both East and West of the diocese) beginning in April. Formation for Lay Leadership is offered in the Local Certificate of Ministry and special conferences that will be offered annually. The Diocese of Willochra is committed to provide the best and most comprehensive formation possible for those who feel called to leadership in God s Church. If you feel that you may be called to Ordination (Deacon, Priest, Local or Stipended) or Lay Leadership which is authorised by the Bishop s Licence, please contact the Reverend Canon Gael Johannsen ( ) or speak to Bishop John or any member of the Ministry Formation Team. The Rev d Gael Johannsen The Community of SS Barnabas and Cecilia 20th Anniversary On May 14, CSBC will be celebrating 20 years since its formation. We will mark the occasion with choral Evensong in St Peter s Cathedral, Adelaide at 6 pm, followed by supper in the Cynthia Poulton Hall. CSBC was called into being by Bishop David McCall in 1997, when he received the vows of Sisters Jean Johnson and Sandra Sears at Ascension Day, May 8, that year. We began in Jamestown, then moved to Peterborough, where we remained until In January that year, Gladstone became the site for the Community House (now named Nabas House ). For those of you who remember those times (or, indeed, the years before 1997 when Jean and Sandra travelled all over the diocese with a music team) you are welcome to join us in our celebration. Please contact Sister Sandra on , or srskscsbc@bigpond.com by May 1 if you wish to attend. We would love to see you there. 2 2 c From the Bishop... Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, We are fortunate in the Diocese of Willochra to have people in the roles of Ministry Development Officer and Ministry of Spirituality; the first full-time, the later a half-time position. In addition, we are fortunate that those who fill the positions, the Rev d Canon Gael Johannsen and the Venerable Michael Hillier, are both gifted practitioners. Both Gael and Michael are significant resources in our ongoing development as disciples, and followers of God s anointed one, God s Christ. Being a disciple is a call to be someone who desires to learn and who understands that learning for a Christian is not something that happened once, but is something that is happening and will continue to happen during this life. Being a disciple means that we will learn about ourselves, in the things that we are good at and the things we are not so good at and how he has gifted us. Being a disciple means that we will continue to learn about God and God s purpose for us as his Church in the world. What is God purposing to do through the Church that he has called into existence? Being a disciple means that we will take our learning about self, about our giftedness and about God s purpose, and intentionally act as an instrument, which will be used to achieve his purpose. Being a disciple means being both a receiver of God s grace and an individual who communicates grace to others. Being a disciple requires activity, both in receiving and in giving! Being a disciple means that we will actively engage in discipling others, helping them to know Christ and to know God s grace poured out upon the whole creation through the Christ. Being a disciple will require an intentional companioning, a walking beside, and a reflecting with others. Often our experience of discipleship will also draw us into a realisation that we are being disciples ourselves through the experience of discipling. That s how God s economy works. We bless someone through our presence with them and yet walk away knowing that we have received a blessing that more often than not seems to exceed what we have given. The action of being a disciple and discipling brings us a depth of life that can surprise us. We find a purpose in this intentional engagement with what God is doing. The MDO s work and the Ministry in Spirituality can aid us as disciples and in our discipling. How will you tap into this human resource which we have in the Diocese of Willochra? How will you step out as a disciple this year? Come as a parish group and tell others how God has been working in sharing the good news where you are. CRUCIFIX Lord, let me be the wood against which you are crucified. Let the nails which pierce your hands and feet be driven into me. Let me learn your obedience in the face of death; your forgiveness in the midst of horror, and let my arms stretch out with yours to gather the whole world into your loving embrace. Amen.! Rev d. Sr. Sandra Sears CSBC26/2/17 Photo: Crucifix at Erimophila Little Brothers of Francis, Tabulim, NSW It is with some sadness that Geraldine and I bring the Eco Spirituality program to an end. It has been gratifying that we have been blessed with good health and significant God-given talents. In this, the emphasis must always be on God our Creator. Eco Spirituality has been just a small part of first, the Diocese of Adelaide and then of Willochra's celebration of Creation. Along with David, Geraldine and I have merely been the agents charged with the responsibility of bringing it to the people. To know that we have been able to enlighten and enrich the lives of so many, has been a source of great joy and enormous satisfaction for all three of us. Make no mistake; it is God our Creator Who has given us the strength and ability to see it through to the end. And, we thank Him for that. Attached to this is Terry Krieg s story about the diocesan Eco Spirituality program, which will draw to a close at the end of this year. David Amery and Terry brought a wonderful sense of commitment and knowledge to the creation of this program. Along with other key contributing personnel, they have overseen its development. Read about the various locations and activities that have welcomed and nurtured some 1200 participants from many places during the past 25 years. They have been brought closer to the beauty of the natural world and to the wonders of God s Creation. Mary Woollacott

6 6 Making the Faith/Work Connection Featuring people from the diocese sharing their views on the connection between faith and life. Denise Officer is a new convert to the community of Burra, having previously lived in the Northern Territory since She is currently resurrecting an arts practice. She has been a career arts administrator as in Artback NT Arts Touring, National Gallery of Australia, Midnight Oil and owner operator of South Paddock Productions specialising in media services to the music Industry. She moved to Burra, because there is the terrific BURRA REGIONAL ART GALLERY, and plenty of churches, which signified to her a community-spirited village that she could enjoy and where she can contribute. This has proved to be a great decision. She has been welcomed into the town and to the congregation at St Mary s. Denise was interviewed by Mary Woollacott Has the (Anglican) Church always been a part of your life? Definitely not! I grew up in Western Victoria as a little Presbyterian attending Sunday School in the Telangatuk East Hall and the Daylesford Presbyterian Church, where my grandparents lived. As there weren t high schools where I lived, I went to boarding school in Melbourne with a mandatory religious education. At PLC (Presbyterian Ladies College) it was get the little ladies to the church on time, single file on Sundays and out as practicing Christians when they depart. I loved singing, but didn't know what confirmation was. You just did it along with everyone else and there was a great afternoon tea! Which people have influenced you? My mother - You are well Churched - her words. Primarily, it is because she encouraged me to read about other religions and learning. Firstly, the relationship Aboriginal people had to the land, 'see that mountain, see that rock, there are living things in there, can you see the shapes in rocks, the sky?' Definitely a religion. However, there were no people, only remains in discovered caves in the Grampians, ploughed up artefacts, photos of Aboriginal cricketers and stories of burial places around the families. That was my first religion, someone else s. I drew the Grampians (Gariwerd) sand stone mountain range and trees incessantly - a big picture view from the big windows at East Changbool, the sheep and wheat property where I grew up, trying to connect the rock faces to the places. How has your faith shaped your outlook? I investigated Mormonism - I liked the colour of their book, bright blue, my favourite colour - but it was restrictive, rather like boarding school rules, and how could you? Once I untangled it, each to their own, I thought! Buddhism and Hinduism - another investigation - for a while. I still hold a fascination for parts of both, similar synergies with Christianity - the happy parts. Follow decent goals in life, the search for eternal truth, find a deeper understanding, refrain from killing living things - I was just trying to unpack or pack the knowledge. Other reasons focussed on art - to look at Hinduism - their belief and usage of many idols, and where it can lead followers. I have always been interested in the connection of art, iconography and religion, with Churches as patrons of the art, or, if not the patrons, using art to record images and story interpretations. The Renaissance artists needed to exist and the Church could and did pay for some of the most beautiful representations of all sorts of religious stories for political and other gains. M y f a i t h has shaped my outlook as I have questioned, looked and visited sacred places. I often check out c h u r c h e s, temples, places of quiet, refuge and safety. I was on an island north of Australia once and some ceremony was going on, so I took off into the Church until it was over. I was in fear of my life about what was about to happen. I Denise with her dog, Leonardo. reappeared and no one cared, as they were exhausted from the activity. Thank GOD for the respectability and safety that the Church still had on that island. I visited the incredible Imperial Temple of Literature in Hanoi, which was Vietnam's first university. The many carved turtles there are symbols of longevity and wisdom, honouring the teachings of Confucius and acknowledging the students who had made the grade. You can rub the turtles heads! Now, that is religion for you! I think I have an open and experienced mind not to judge everyone. People are to be encouraged, given respect and given the freedom to practice what they desire without using violence and retribution, sadly often perpetrated because of religious belief. I have lived in many parts of Australia and have had some interesting experiences with religion in indigenous communities. Here are several examples Some evangelists threatened that the world would end next week, if you play that loud music. Where Catholicism is so embedded in community, it is accepted as how it always has been, even though the 'mission' celebrated its 100th anniversary not so long ago! (Definitely a white construct!) Where Jesus has a black face along with his mother, and visual representations of them are high on the altar, as seen in the Darwin's Catholic Cathedral. I really like this vision. Where the Bible has been translated to the local 'language' but no-one can read! Where Sunday's church singing and dancing amplified through a PA system goes into Monday morning. Essential Services cuts the power to the whole community - 'black out', so people can sleep. I enjoy participating in religious gatherings here in Australia or elsewhere. My most recent visit abroad was to a Cambodian Buddhist temple high in the mountains past Kampot. Baptised and cleansed in the spring water. Just go with the flow. My God, it was cold, but good, like walking on air. For a short time I felt that I had wings!

7 ISSUES.ISSUES.ISSUES.ISSUES..ISSUES.ISSUES..ISSUES. 7 GROW ONE! Grow one what? It could be many things we all like to think we are growing in some small way. I mentioned this phrase, Grow One in the previous edition and warned that I would expand on it here. It s in connection with Stewardship, our flavour of the month/ quarter/year. In my last article, I mentioned the dreaded tithe of our money and conceded that to tithe income was just too hard for many people. However, there are quite a number of faithful givers around our diocese who are doing just that. Not to balance a church budget, but because they recognise that tithing is a fully generous response to God s generosity to us. However, it s a big step. Grow One is the name of a programme recommended to me a few years back by our Bishop John who had seen it work in some NSW Parishes. I outlined it last edition. That is, instead of giving ten per cent, (if that is too hard), try increasing by ten percent. For this to be effective, you have to do it every year. Look at the graph below. If you are currently giving $20 per week, next time you begin a new church year (maybe with envelopes, maybe open plate, or direct crediting), can you bump that up by $2 to $22. Not too hard? In the next year, increase by $2.20, so we re up to $24.20 and it wouldn t be too much of a stretch to round that up to $25, just to keep the Maths easy? Do you see how it works? In less than eight years, you have doubled your giving not a bad outcome! Congratulations! At present, and for some time to come we are told, we will be living in a low-inflation environment where costs, although they re going up, are certainly not rising by anything like 10 % per year, so doing the above is beating inflation hands down and making a real increase to your church s income. Is there a downside? You bet. Who will remind you to increase by ten percent every year? Because if you don t, the result will mean no change. The answer is, YOU MUST or have someone in your congregation who is ardently fond of stewardship (that could be your Treasurer!) to remind you and everybody else that IT S TIME. Give it a go for eight years. I reckon your church will be better off. Michael Ford, Diocesan Treasurer and Lay Canon ISSUES.ISSUES.ISSUES.ISSUES..ISSUES.ISSUES.ISSUES.ISSUES..ISSUES.ISSUES

8 8 Cool World The time has come...and with just four words from their iconic song Beds Are Burning, Midnight Oil announced their The Great Circle 2017 World Tour. The worst kept secret in contemporary rock music was officially no longer a secret...the Oils were back! And, since the announcement was made in late February there has been a flurry of activity as fans, both old and new, scramble for tickets. Cynical members of the press speculate as to whether the band will still be able to cut it and whether lead singer and former politician Peter Garrett can still sing with the same degree of conviction about issues he conveniently put on the back burner during his time in Parliament. For South Australian fans, all will be revealed on Thursday October 26 when the Oils play the Village Green, adjacent to Adelaide Oval. And Cool World will be there to give you the works on whether the band that once ruled the world can still get it done with the same degree of power and passion. For music on a much smaller scale, it was a case of back to the future in January as I attended my first pub gig in a very long time. So it was with a mixture of excitement and trepidation that I ventured into the Grace Emily Hotel in Waymouth Street to see one of my favourite Australian bands, the mighty Even. Featuring Ash Naylor on vocals and guitar, Wally Kempton on bass and Matt Cotter on drums, Even has been around since the early 1990s producing some of the finest indie rock you could ever wish to hear. With wonderful melodies and irresistible riffs, Even were in town to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the release of their debut album Less is More. For Even's Adelaide fans, this was a rare treat as it's not often that the band tours outside of their home state of Victoria and it had been several years since I'd last seen them, so there was a real air of expectancy as we waited for the band to hit the stage. Even didn't disappoint as they played Less Is More in its entirety, reminding us, what a great album it was and how fresh and vibrant those songs still are. After a short break, the band returned to play a selection of tunes from their other albums, opening the set with my personal favourite No Surprises, with Ash Naylor introducing the song by saying 'This is for John Fowler' (I'd contacted the band via their Facebook page asking, begging, them to play it). My night was complete and they could have played nursery rhymes for the rest of the evening! There was a good vibe about the Grace Emily, where people were too involved in the music to be bothered carrying on like galoots, and I left feeling much more positive about the pub music scene and life in general. 9 9 GRAFFITI Lord, Someone has sprayed graffiti all over me - lies and obscenities, tagged with a strange name, obscuring my own. Someone has etched their initials across the surface of my being, like a mischievous finger in wet cement leaving its mark for generations to come, laying claim to my identity and purpose. Come, Lord Jesus. Come with your bucket of soapy water, brush and sponge and scour the paint away. Come with your sander and grind those initials and dates to dust. Come with the gentle cloth of your love and polish me, so that the truth of me is finally revealed, to myself and others; so that I am able to reflect your face, your love, out to the world. Rev d.
