Perhaps a mother an daughter mysteriously switch bodies. Or a pauper is mistaken for a prince. Usually, chaos ensues as the characters try to get used to their new roles. In today s Gospel reading, another kind of switch occurs, only this time both characters are very comfortable in their new roles. First, there s the man with leprosy. He had been living in a kind of exile from society because of his disease. But after Jesus heals him, he is set free from his isolation. He is so excited, in fact, that he spreads the news about Jesus far and wide. Then there s Jesus. He had been at the center of a renewal movement in Galilee, a kind of toast of the town, visiting every synagogue he could and receiving a warm welcome wherever he went. But all this changed when he met the man with leprosy. As a result of his healing the man, Jesus is the one who has to stay in deserted places ( Mark 1:45). By touching this man, Jesus took the man s uncleanness upon himself instead. In a way, this switch is a foreshadowing of the cross. Jesus became an outsider, despised and rejected, so that we could become insiders in his heavenly kingdom. Can you imagine? First, the infinite and eternal God became a vulnerable, helpless baby. Then throughout his life, he endured exclusion, misunderstanding, and ridicule. Only the purest, most sacrificial love could accept all of this for the sake of redeeming a people lost in sin. Take a moment, and imagine Jesus standing before you. As he did with the leper, he wants to switch places with you. He wants to take your sin and your isolation. He wants to welcome you into his kingdom. Let him show you how much he loves you, accepts you, and rejoices over you. Lord, thank you for becoming an outsider so that I could be accepted. The second collection this week is for church repairs. Leprosy features prominently in the first reading and the Gospel today. In the Leviticus, the leper is kept outside the community so as to protect everyone else from this communicable disease. But the leper in Mark challenges Jesus and Jesus breaks down the barrier between them, reaches out, touches him, and heals him. As we listen to today s readings, consider how we exclude others in our lives, perhaps because we feel they would make us unclean, and how Jesus would respond. On this World day of the Sick that those who are sick, especially the chronically ill, may knowing healing, friendship, and strength. Feb. 11 Feb :30am Family Mass. Therefore, we strongly advise that you park only in the designated areas for all future services and events. ASH WEDNESDAY He asked, Why were we there? What were we seeking? For some, this was one of the handful of days that would bring them to this place. For some, the very thing that brought them here would be wiped away the moment they crossed the church s threshold. So what were we really seeking? His words convicted my heart. Then I did not understand why I was drawn back on a handful of days, year after year. I was part of some of whom the priest spoke and yet, at the same time, I was like Daniel. Daniel s some had sinned, rebelled and rejected the Lord s commandments. (Daniel) turned to the Lord God, pleading in earnest prayer, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes (Dn9:3). He wore outward symbols of meekness and humility, acknowledged sinfulness, and actively sought the Lord s mercy. Year after year, my heart would crack open as I bowed my head and was reminded of my own humanity. I know now, my heart was seeking what my mind did not yet understand. On this day, I embrace and wear freely the outward sign of my sinfulness. On this day and every day, I seek the One who redeems, heals, and transforms. When my words and deeds fall short, when I stumble and fall, I search for the hand of the One who will restore my footing. On this day and every, I seek my Lord, confident it is because of my brokenness, my humility, and my meekness. 4 Fashion Show by Stein Mart Sat. Feb. 17, 2018 Our observance of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, a day of fast and abstinence for Catholics. At Mass on Ash Wednesday (February 14, 2018), the imposition of ashes replicates an ancient penitential practice and symbolizes our dependence upon God's mercy and forgiveness. During Lent, the baptized are called to renew their baptismal commitment as others prepare to be baptized through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, a period of learning and discernment for individuals who have declared their desire to become Catholics. The three traditional pillars of Lenten observance are prayer, fasting and almsgiving. The Church asks us to surrender ourselves to prayer and to the reading of Scripture, to fasting and to giving alms. The fasting that all do together on Fridays is but a sign of the daily Lenten discipline of individuals and households: fasting for certain periods of time, fasting from certain foods, but also fasting from other things and activities. Likewise, the giving of alms is some effort to share this world equally not only through the distribution of money, but through the sharing of our time and talents. The key to fruitful observance of these practices is to recognize their link to baptismal renewal. We are called not just to abstain from sin during Lent, but to true conversion of our hearts and minds as followers of Christ. We recall those waters in which we were baptized into Christ's death, died to sin and evil, and began new life in Christ. The law of abstinence requires a Catholic 14 years of age until death to abstain from eating meat on Fridays in honor of the Passion of Jesus on Good Friday. Meat is considered to be the flesh and organs of mammals and fowl. Also forbidden are soups or gravies made from them. Salt and freshwater species of fish, amphibians, reptiles and shellfish are permitted, as are animal derived products such as margarine and gelatin which do not have any meat taste. Aside from these minimum penitential requirements Catholics are encouraged to impose some personal penance on themselves at other times. It could be modeled after abstinence and fasting. A person could, for example, multiply the number of days they abstain. Some people give up meat entirely for religious motives (as opposed to those who give it up for health or other motives). Some religious orders, as a penance, never eat meat. Similarly, one could multiply the number of days that one fasted. The early Church had a practice of a Wednesday and Saturday fast. This fast could be the same as the Church's law (one main meal and two smaller ones) or stricter, even bread and water. Such freely chosen fasting could also consist in giving up something one enjoys - candy, soft drinks, smoking, that cocktail before supper, and so on. This is left to the individual. One final consideration. Before all else we are obliged to perform the duties of our state in life. Any deprivation that would seriously hinder us in carrying out our work, as students, employees or parents would be contrary to the will of God. -- Colin B.
