1 Key Stage 2 Lesson Plan Learning objectives: - To understand the importance of the Last Supper - To consider the value of sharing a meal together RE Links: England: Isle of Man: Northern Ireland: Scotland: Wales: 1b) describe the variety of practices and ways of life in religions and understand how these stem from, and are closely connected with, beliefs and teachings 4D) Why is Easter so important to Christians? Special meals with Jesus The Revelation of God: The life of Jesus RME 2-03a) I am increasing my knowledge and understanding of different forms of Christian worship and artefacts and can explain their importance for Christians Scotland Roman Catholic: RERC 1-16a/RERC 2-16a I know that the Mass is at the heart of Catholic community life and I am developing an understanding of how to participate fully in this celebration. features of religious buildings and the worship and celebrations that take place within the special places and within the home Stimulus material: Friends and Heroes DVD Episode 11: Exodus. This lesson is based on the second half of the episode from 12:34 mins when Samuel has finished speaking, until the end. Bible reference for the main story: The Last Supper Matthew 26:17-30 Other resources required: Copies of Worksheet 11.2a (enough for one per pupil) Copies of Worksheet 11.2b (enough for one per pupil) 1
2 Introduction: Introduce the session objectives to the pupils and begin to describe for them a good meal that you have enjoyed. Make sure that you describe the food carefully and also talk about who you shared that meal with. Was it for a special occasion or was it with a special group of people? Ask them to use Worksheet 11.2a to design a three course meal that they would love to eat. They should also include what they would drink and who they would invite to the meal. Encourage them to use descriptive vocabulary. Once the menus have been designed, ask the pupils to share some of their ideas. Ask them the following questions. Why have they chosen the different foods? Who have they chosen to share the meal with? Why choose these people? Explain that different families have different views about sharing meals together and some families find it hard to do. Most families, however, enjoy an opportunity to sit down and to share a meal together and find that it is a time when they can share things with each other. Activities: Explain that in today s episode of Friends and Heroes, we see a number of people taking part in a meal. Macky and his friends have recently finished their Passover meal (see previous lesson), and the Bible story that is told by Samuel is of the last meal that Jesus shared with his followers before he was crucified it is known as The Last Supper. Show Friends and Heroes DVD Episode 11: Exodus from 12:34 mins when Samuel has finished speaking, until the end. Using the images shown in the extract ask the pupils to create a freeze-frame tableau of a moment when Jesus and his friends were reclining around a table they would have been eating and drinking together. During the meal, Jesus did and said some strange things. Ask the pupils to respond to what he said by changing their expressions to show how they might have been feeling. Jesus broke bread and shared wine amongst his friends. How would they have responded? He said that he was going to die. How might they have been feeling? Draw the pupil s attention to appropriate facial expressions or other gestures. Emphasise that Jesus followers would have been shocked things had been going well with Jesus they didn t expect him to say that he was going to die. It was a shock and a sign that things were going to get more difficult for them. Tell the pupils that Christians today still remember the Last Supper that Jesus shared with his followers. It s sometimes referred to as Communion or the Eucharist or Mass and Christians remember how Jesus died for their sins. In some 2
3 churches, this happens every week and in others it happens less regularly. It was an important moment for Macky and his family too. As they remembered Peter s last meal with Jesus, they too knew that things would have to change for them. They needed to leave Alexandria in order to be safe. We have a song about The Last Supper called Remember Me. You can add music and Song Time activities to your lesson using our music CD, What about Love? : Bible songs inspired by Friends and Heroes Series 1. Click here to learn more: /songtime Reflection / Personal search / Response: Remind the pupils how fortunate we are to have access to plentiful food for our meals. Remind them that some people in the world are not as fortunate as this. In some households, families say a grace before dinner to thank God for his provision of food. It s good to remind ourselves to be grateful for the things we have and the things we re given. Ask the pupils to use Worksheet 11.2b to write their own grace that could be said before a meal as a reminder to be thankful for the things we have. Assessment / reporting: Can pupils explain what The Last Supper is? Links to other subject areas: PSHE/SEAL links: SEAL: New beginnings; Say no to bullying make the link to Leah and Lydia Literacy links: Use of descriptive language Literacy links: Poetry writing a grace Creative/other links: DT: Creating a meal; could also link to Science A balanced meal 3
