3 Medium Term Plan Aim Key Questions Activities Resources 1 To look at the origins of the service 1 Why do Christians celebrate? 1 Encourage pupils to bring in something that reminds them of special times or special people. Discuss what they have brought in. Explain that Christians have a number of different symbols that help them to remember events and also that help them express their faith being a very significant one. 1 Talk About worksheet An Introduction to interactive presentation Action: Create a display of both Christian and non-christian symbols and artefacts that help us to remember. What is? - film 2 To recount the events of the Last Supper To explore the significance of these events for Christians today. 2 What is so important about the Last Supper? 2 Recap on the previous lesson. Explain that you are going to be looking in more detail at the historical background of. Action: The ideal situation would be to have a Passover meal set out for the children to sit around and if appropriate participate in. Explain that in the last week before his death Jesus and his friends ate the Last Supper - this was in fact a Passover Meal a time to remember God s rescue of the Hebrew slaves out of Egypt. It was during this meal that Jesus initiated the sacrament of. When taught like this, the children are able to grasp in more depth the symbolism and significance of as well as recognising its historical context. 2 Where appropriate use ideas from the explore lesson plan Maundy Thursday bible account film Maundy Thursday Mass Bread and Wine / Grape Juice Passover / Seder Plate
4 3 To compare and contrast how different denominations celebrate. 3.1 How is celebrated in the Church of England? 3.1 Explore how is celebrated in the Church of England. It is important to explain that not all Anglican churches will celebrate it in the same way depending on how high or low church they are. Also explain that a person will usually start to participate in after they have been confirmed or have gone through believer s baptism. 3 Try to arrange visitors from the different denominations to explain their view on / Mass / Eucharist. 3.1 in the Church of England film 3.2 How is Mass celebrated in the Catholic Church? 3.2 Explore how Mass is celebrated in the Catholic Church. There will be a more standard way to celebrate Mass than in the Anglican Church. Depending on the age and level of the pupils you may want to explain the doctrine of transubstantiation. An excellent resource for this is: Also highlight the fact that children as young as 7 will take part in Mass. Gives a glimpse into a young child s view of in the Catholic Church 3.2 Catholic Mass film 3.3 How is Eucharist celebrated in a Greek Orthodox Church? 3.3 Explain that in the Orthodox Church, children can be part of the Eucharist as soon as they have been baptised, and even newborn babies can receive the wine. In the Orthodox Church people will often fast before they take so that it is the first food that they eat that day. The elements will also be served on a spoon because they are considered so holy. 3.3 Eucharist in the Orthodox Church - film 3.4 How is the Lord s Supper celebrated in a non-conformist church? 3.4 In a non-conformist setting there is a less formal approach to the Lord s Supper. It is often the case that people will stay seated and will serve each other rather than being served from the front. In some cases the Lord s Supper will even be shared as part of a larger meal. This is so that it more reflects the actual Last Supper that Jesus and his disciples shared.
5 Action: compare the different approaches to / Mass / Eucharist / Lord s Supper i.e. the different names, approaches, beliefs, elements used, settings. Consider: What does the way a church approaches tell you about their beliefs and traditions? Consider: What is constant through all the examples of how is celebrated? What does this tell you about what are the most important aspects of the meal?
