12 th Sunday in Ordinary Time Ren and Florence Davis June 20, 2010 Prayer Requests and Announcements Opening Song Gather Your People #315 Opening Prayer We dare to pray: God, let the world be changed, for we long to see the end of poverty. We dare to pray: God, let the rules be changed for we long to see trade bring justice to the poor. We dare to pray: Let our lives be changed, for we long to bring hope where good news is needed. In the strength of your Spirit and inspired by your compassion, we promise to work for change and wait confidently for the day when you make all things new. Amen. First Reading Gal. 3: A reading from Paul s letter to the Galatians. Brothers and sisters: Through faith you are all children of God in Christ Jesus. For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham s descendants, heirs according to the promise. Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm Psalm 63: 1-4 O God, you are my God, eagerly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my flesh faints for you, in a dry and barren desert where there is no water. Therefore I have gazed upon you in your holy place, that I might behold your power and your glory. For your loving-kindness is better than life itself; my lips shall give you praise. So will I bless you as long as I live, and lift up my hands in your name. Second Reading For Paul, the Householder of the earth-house, the Homemaker of the world-home, is God, and all people are God s dependents, God s children. God is the One who has responsibility and charge for the home s extended family. Therefore, for Paul, the justice of equality is directly about God and indirectly about us. It is, first and foremost, about the honor and glory of a just God, reflected in a just world. Paul is not thinking about democracy, social justice or human rights. He is thinking primarily about the honor and glory of God revealed in how Christ lived and died and how the world should live and not die... We might be tempted today to criticize Paul along these lines: You are so narrow and parochial, dear Paul. You are only speaking about Christianity and not about the whole world. We Americans have a Pledge of Allegiance assuring liberty and justice for all, not just for Christians. And we open our Declaration of Independence to everyone. How might Paul have responded to those proclamations of universal and natural rights compared to his assertions of Christian rights and duties? Had he written a Letter to the Americans, he might have maintained that, since he believed that all people should be Christians, he also believed all people should be equal. He might have asked how we were doing with equality for all the world, or even for all Americans, noting the difficulties involved in his own attempts to persuade his small groups of Christians about it. He may even have come to the conclusion that with regard to human equality, a
sincere and effective parochialism might be preferable to an insincere and ineffective universalism. --from The First Paul by Marcus J. Borg and John Dominic Crossan Meditation ( attributed to St. Teresa of Avila) Christ has no body now on earth but yours; no hands but yours, no feet but yours. Yours are the eyes through which is to look out Christ s compassion to the world; Yours are the feet with which he is to go about doing good; yours are the hands with which he is to bless humanity now. Gospel Acclamation Gospel Reading Luke 9:18-23 God be with you. And also with you. A reading from the holy gospel of Luke. Glory to you,o God. Once when Jesus was praying alone, the disciples were with him, and he asked them, Who do people say that I am? They answered, John the Baptist; but others say Elijah, and still others say, one of the old prophets has risen. Then he said to them, But who do you say that I am? Peter answered, The Christ of God. But he charged them to tell this to no one, saying, The Son of Man must suffer greatly, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised. Then Jesus said to all, If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me; for whoever wishes to save her life will lose it but whoever loses her life for my sake will save it. The good news of salvation. Glory and praise to Jesus Christ. Silent Reflection/ Dialogue
Intercessions O God, you love justice and peace on earth, so we pray now for all people, everywhere, according to their need.. For the victims of war: men, women and children, the maimed, the crippled, the abandoned, the homeless, we pray: O God, hear our prayer. (sung) For the imprisoned and the tortured, for widows, widowers, and orphans, the weary and desperate, and for all who are living in fear, we pray: O God, hear our prayer. For the migrants crossing the desert, for men and women suddenly deported, for children who are citizens but without parents, for all who are lost and forsaken, we pray: O God, hear our prayer. For soldiers whose weapons bring no security, that they may return to their families and live in well-being and peace, we pray: O God, hear our prayer. For an end to waging war, to the violation of our earth, to the destruction of peoples and their cultures, we pray: O God, hear our prayer. For a world where the weak are protected and none go hungry or poor; a world where the riches of creation are shared by all, where diversity is respected and no one is shut out; a world where peace is built with justice and justice is guided with love, we pray: O God, hear our prayer. O God, show us where love and hope and faith are needed, and use us to bring them to those places. Open our ears and eyes, our hearts and lives, so that in the coming days we may be able to work for peace and justice for you. Amen. Gathering at the Table We have shared bread many times in our lives, in many places, for many reasons. The bread that we now break is a sharing in the life of Christ. May our acceptance of it today be a sign of our faith in the ongoing goodness of a God who journeys with us.
But how can we break bread and not remember those who have no bread? How can we meet together tonight and not remember those separated from family and friends? How can we find shelter here and not remember those whose only shelter is a refugee camp or a cardboard box? How can we speak of peace and not remember those whose peace is shattered by constant fear and the noise of gunshots? How can we sing our hymns and not remember those who cannot openly express their religious beliefs? How can we pour wine and not remember those who are imprisoned by addiction to bottles, needles, or pills? How can we celebrate and not remember those who suffer from depression, mental illness or grief? God of human experience, born in a stable and executed on a cross, Holy Spirit alive in us today, help us to recognize you as we break this bread. It is the bread of heaven, the bread of the poor, the bread of our lives. As we break the bread and pour the wine, may we look outward to the suffering of our world, remembering the hope of your Shalom. Let us now pray in the spirit of the prayer that Jesus taught us: Our Father-Mother who is above and within, hallowed be your name. In wisdom, love, and equity your kindom come to all. Your will be done, as in heaven, so on earth. Give us day by day to partake of your holy bread and the fruit of the living vine. As you forgive our sins, so may we forgive others who sin against us. Show us your goodness, so that we may show the same to others. In the hour of temptation deliver us from evil, For yours is the power and the glory forever. (Adapted from a translation from Aramaic into Old English. Let us share the bread and wine as Jesus taught us, knowing that our lives are forever changed by this and every breaking of bread. Sharing the Bread and Wine #356 One Bread, One Body Silent Reflection
Closing Prayer A Franciscan benediction May God bless you with discomfort at easy answers, half truths and superficial relationships. May God bless you with anger at injustice, oppression and exploitation of people, so that you may work for justice, freedom and peace. May God bless you with tears to shed for those who suffer pain, rejection, starvation and war so that you may reach out your hand to comfort them and turn their pain to joy. And may God bless you with enough foolishness to believe that you can make a difference in the world, so that you can do what others claim cannot be done. Amen. Blessing May God bless us and keep us, May God s face shine upon us, May God be gracious to us and grant to us, and to all our broken world, peace. And may the blessing of Almighty God, the Creator, the Redeemer, and the Holy Spirit come upon us and remain with us forever. Amen. Closing Song #407 Sing a New Church Into Being Sharing the sign of peace Happy Birthday to Patricia Morrison
