2 RE-CAP OF STEP ONE What is a Hurt, Habit or Hang-up? A hurt, habit or hang-up is something in you or your life that hinders your walk with God and others.

3 RE-CAP OF STEP ONE What is a Hurt? The feeling of being hurt is an emotional reaction to another person s behavior or to a disturbing situation. (Abuse, abandonment, codependency, divorce, relationship issues, etc.)

4 RE-CAP OF STEP ONE What is a Habit? A habit is an addiction to someone or something. (Alcoholism, drugs, food, gambling, sex, shopping, smoking, etc.)

5 RE-CAP OF STEP ONE What is a Hang-up? Hang-ups are negative mental attitudes that are used to cope with people or adversity. (Anger, depression, fear, unforgiveness, etc.)

6 RE-CAP OF STEP ONE 1 We admitted we were powerless over our addictions and compulsive behaviors, that our lives had become unmanageable. I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. Romans 7:18

7 PRINCIPAL OF STEP ONE Realize I m not God; I admit that I am powerless to control my tendency to do the wrong thing and that my life is unmanageable. (Step 1) Happy are those who know that they are spiritually poor.

8 RE-CAP OF STEP TWO 2 We came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity. For it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose. Philippians 2:13

9 RE-CAP OF STEP TWO Atheist and/or Agnostic Unchurched Twisted View of God No Father Figure or Poor Example God Shoved Down Their Throat The Church is Full of Hypocrites

10 RE-CAP OF STEP TWO Believing in a Sponsor/Mentor and/or Group of People is a belief in a Power Greater Than Myself, and All That is Necessary to Make a Beginning Toward Faith.

11 PRINCIPAL OF STEP TWO Earnestly believe that God exists, that I matter to Him and that He has the power to help me recover. (Step 2) Happy are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

12 RE-CAP OF STEP THREE 3 We made a decision to turn our lives and our wills over to the care of God. Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God - this is your spiritual act of worship. Romans 12:1

13 RE-CAP OF STEP THREE ONLY TWO REQUIREMENTS 1. Be Convinced That a Life Run on Self-Will Can Hardly Be a Success. 2. Next, Hereafter in the Drama of Life, that God Was in Charge.

14 RE-CAP OF STEP THREE THIRD STEP PROMISES Begin to Lose Our Fear of Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow. Interested in Others More Than Ourselves. We Are Reborn. Born Again!

15 PRAYER OF SALVATION "Father, I know that I have broken your laws and my sins have separated me from you. I am truly sorry, and now I want to turn away from my past sinful life toward you. Please forgive me, and help me avoid sinning again. I believe that your son, Jesus Christ died for my sins, was resurrected from the dead, is alive, and hears my prayer. I invite Jesus to become the Lord of my life, to rule and reign in my heart from this day forward. Please send your Holy Spirit to help me obey You, and to do Your will for the rest of my life. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen."

16 THIRD STEP PRAYER God, I offer myself to Thee To build with me & to do with me as Thou wilt. Relieve me of the bondage of self, that I may better do Thy will. Take away my difficulties, that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help of Thy Power, Thy love & Thy way of life.

18 PRINCIPAL OF STEP THREE Consciously choose to commit all my life and will to Christ s care and control. (Step 3) Happy are the meek.

19 Step Four Moral Inventory 4 We made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves. Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord. Lamentations 3:40

20 PRICIPAL OF STEP FOUR Openly examine and confess my faults to myself, to God, and to someone I trust. (Steps 4 and 5) Happy are the pure in heart.

21 Step Four Moral Inventory What is the problem? Well, it s Truth Decay! What does Moral mean? How do you do a Moral Inventory? What if I do it wrong? What really counts?

22 Step Four Moral Inventory Truth Decay: We Chip away and clean out all the decay of the past that has built up over the years and has kept us from really seeing the truth about our past and present situations.

23 Adjective Definition of Moral 1. concerned with the principles of right and wrong behavior and the goodness or badness of human character.

24 Adjective Definition of Moral 2. holding or manifesting high principles for proper conduct.

25 Noun Definition of Moral 1. a lesson, especially one concerning what is right or prudent, that can be derived from a story, a piece of information, or an experience. What is the moral of the story?

26 Noun Definition of Moral 2. a person's standards of behavior or beliefs concerning what is and is not acceptable for them to do.

30 Relationships with Others 1. Who has hurt you? 2. Against whom have you been holding a grudge? 3. Against whom are you still seeking revenge? 4. Are you jealous of someone?

33 Priorities in Your Life 1. After making the decision to turn your life and your will over to God, in what areas of your life are you still not putting God first? 2. What in your past is interfering with your doing God s will? Your ambition? Your pleasures?

34 Priorities in Your Life 3. What have been you priorities in your life, your job? Friendships? Personal Goals? Were they self-centered, self-serving? Selfishness turns life into a burden. Unselfishness turns burdens into life.

35 Priorities in Your Life 4. Who did your priorities effect? You know, you will never get so rich that you can afford to lose a true friend. 5. What was good about your priorities? 6. What was wrong about them?

36 Your Attitude Ephesians 4:31 (NIV) 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.

37 Your Attitude 1. Do you always try to have an attitude of gratitude or do you find yourself always complaining about your circumstances? 2. In what areas of your life are you ungrateful? 3. Have you gotten angry and easily blown up at people?

In what areas of your past have your used false humility? 5. Have you pretended to live one way in front of your Christian friends and another way at home, school, or at work?

42 Spiritual Inventory Part 2 Psalm 139:23-24 (NIV) 23 Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

43 Your Mind Romans 12:2 (NIV) 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God s will is his good, pleasing and perfect will.

44 Your Mind 1. How have you guarded your mind in the past? What did you deny? 2. Have you filled your mind with hurtful and unhealthy movies, Internet sites, television programs, magazines, or books? 3. Have you failed to concentrate on the positive truths of the Bible?

45 Your Body 1. In what ways have you mistreated your body? Alcohol, drugs, food, or sex? 2. What activities or habits caused harm to your physical health. Some say I can do what I want it s my body. They think they are FREE, but really they are enslaved to their own desires, which ultimately cause them great harm.

46 Your Family 1. Have you mistreated anyone in your family? How? 2. Against whom in your family do you have a resentment? 3. To whom do you owe an amends? 4. What is the family secret that you have been denying?

47 Your Mind We ve made it all in the way through eight different areas very quickly to help you begin and complete your inventory. 48 Step Five - Confess 5 We admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. James 5:16

49 Principal of Step Five Openly examine and confess my faults to myself, to God, and to someone I trust. (Steps 4 and 5) Happy are the pure in heart.

50 Step Five - Confess Confess your shortcomings, resentments, and sins Obey God s direction No more guilt Face the truth Ease the pain Stop the blame Start accepting God

51 Step Five - Confess The C in confess is CONFESS your shortcomings, resentments, and sins. God wants us to come clean and admit that wrong is wrong, that we re guilty as charged. For the person who confesses, shame is over and realities have begun. Confession is necessary for fellowship. Our sins have built a barrier between us and God.

52 Step Five - Confess The O in confess stands for OBEY God s direction. Confession means that we agree with God regarding our sins. Confession restores our fellowship.

53 Step Five - Confess The next letter is N: No more guilt. This principal can restore our confidence, our relationships, and allow us to move on from our rearview mirror way of living that kept us looking back and second guessing ourselves and others.

54 Step Five - Confess So that s the C-O-N of confess. The con is over. We have followed God s direction on how to confess our wrongs.

55 Step Five - Confess Fifth Step Promises 1. We will be able to FACE the truth. 2. The next positive change that confession brings is to EASE the pain. We are only as sick as our secrets. We begin to divide the pain and the shame.

56 Step Five - Confess 3.The first S in confess reminds us that we can now STOP the blame. It has been said that people who can smile when something goes wrong probably just thought of somebody they can blame it on. But the truth is, we cannot find peace and serenity if we continue to blame ourselves or others.

57 Step Five - Confess 4.Finally, the last S shows us that it is time to START accepting God s forgiveness. Once we accept God s forgiveness we are able to look others in the eye. We see ourselves and our actions in a new light. We are ready to find the humility to exchange our shortcomings in Principal 5.

58 Summary of Step Five In confession we open our lives to healing, reconciling, restoring, uplifting grace of Jesus Christ who loves us in spite of ourselves.

59 Final Slide of Step Five First John 1:9 (NIV) reminds us that if we confess our sins, He will forgive our sins, because we can trust God to do what is right. He will cleanse us from all the wrongs we have done.

60 Let s Pray Dear God, thank You for Your promise that if we confess, You will hear us and cleanse us, easing our pain and guilt. Thank You that You always do what is right. In Jesus name, Amen.
