1 Loch Raven Press Loch Raven Press L O C H R AV E N P R E S B Y T E R I A N C H U R C H, P C A The Pastor s Page: Semper Fi, Mac October 2013 The well-known U. S. Marine motto, Semper Fidelis illustrates how some phrases can vividly communicate much more than a simple saying. Our neighbor Mac was a former Marine and proud of it; he understood and embraced the history and culture of the Marine Corps in the best ways imaginable. We were thankful that God placed us beside him and his family. Oh, and you couldn t miss that he loved his country and the Corps the flags he flew and the bumper sticker proclaimed loud and clear who he was. October is the month that we as Protestants remember and give thanks to God for the Reformation. On the last Sunday of the month, we will gather with other reformed believers to humbly celebrate how God used Martin Luther, Ulrich Zwingli, John Calvin, and others to issue a clarion call for God s people to return to the Bible as their only authority in faith and practice. Luther struck the spark that began the firestorm which was the Reformation by posting his 95 Theses on the door of the Wittenberg church the evening before All Saints Day, that is, on All Hallows Eve, October 31, And out of the ensuing controversy, Protestantism was born. Five slogans became the rallying points for the Reformation, and we still today need to know them and hold onto everything they convey. While in my high school Latin class I learned a humorous little ditty: Latin is a dead language, as dead as dead can be; First it killed the Romans, and now it s killing me! Tongue in cheek aside, I hope that you are already familiar with these five Latin mottos, the Solas of the Reformation. You will certainly not regret the time and effort to learn more about them*. We must understand the history and culture that surrounds the Reformation. And while we should not be antagonistic, we should be strong-minded in what we believe. So this month, let s give some attention to the study of Reformed theology and wholeheartedly embrace all that is good and true of the Reformation. 2 Pastor s Page - continued Loch Raven Press exhibit Biblical Truth, so I hope that you will know and love these Latin phrases. Sola Scriptura = Scripture Alone Sola Fide = Faith Alone Sola Gratia = Grace Alone Solus Christus = Christ Alone Soli Deo Gloria = Glory to God Alone Maybe our friends and neighbors will ask us sometime why we are so zealous for God alone to get the glory and the Bible alone to be our ultimate authority; maybe then we can share the Good News of salvation by Grace alone through Faith alone in Christ alone! Reformation Service Sunday, October 27, :00 PM held at Timonium Presbyterian Church 303 W. Timonium Road Dr. Howard Griffith will be preaching. Looking forward to worshipping with many of you on Reformation Sunday evening, Pastor Milligan *Two modern stalwarts of the faith will prove excellent teachers: James Montgomery Boice, Whatever Happened to the Gospel of Grace? Rediscovering the Doctrines that Shook the World; and R. C. Sproul, What is Reformed Theology? (which is available in print, audio, or video). Dr. Griffith served as Pastor of All Saints Reformed Presbyterian Church for 23 years and has taught Systematic Theology at Reformed Seminary since Warm- hearted and committed to the church, Howard is a gifted theologian, bringing redemptive and historical biblical exegesis to bear upon the church s theology. Loch Raven, Aisquith, Valley and Timonium PCA churches have been meeting together for many years for the Reformation Service. A choir formed from members of these four churches will perform special music during the service. Members of all churches are invited to come to the Service. 3 The Trustee s Toolbox The Trustees met on Monday September 9 th to discuss the following items: The written and photo inventory has been completed on the church and church house. This process was done in case there is ever damage or theft to the church property. The lights in the Sunday school rooms and the hallway on the ground floor of the church will be replaced all at one time. Monthly, these lights were going out along with the transformers. Replacing these one by one gave our church member repair person a neck ache, was timely and not cost effective. We will hire an electrician to do the remaining lights that are over 25 years old. The water maintenance pond in back of the church will be cleared sometime at the end of September or early October. A-AAA Tree Service, who is certified for the job, did this task 3 years ago. (Besides who of us wants to fight snakes, varmints, poison ivy and handle dangerous equipment?) Our site survey by the State of Maryland is due December 2nd. A 2 nd gate rest was installed at the entrance of the driveway to help support the weight of the gate when closed. Tim Freeman was elected to serve on the Building Committee as the Trustee representative. Did you know? The location of our church in the 1880 s was occupied by a farm house and out buildings. Ironworks found on the property during excavation of the church indicated that the owner was also a blacksmith who could make his own door hinges, nails and decorative ironworks. William J. Taylor and his wife, believed to be the original owners sold the farm house and land (about 80 acres) to Frank J. and Christina Marie McQuade in 1937; they in turn sold to a large portion to Doncaster Realty Inc. in 1960 for the building of apartments. The apartment complex presently surrounds the church property along with single homes. Minetta Marie McQuade daughter to Frank and Christina, remained on the property and later married Kenneth L. Lighthiser. The Lighthisers continued to farm the land; but on a lesser scale. Some members of our church, related to the Lighthisers, remember running though the corn fields as young children in the early 1960 s where 3 the church now stands. Some members recalled horses kept on the property and sleighing down the hills further behind the farmhouse. The Lighthisers (Kenneth L. & Minetta Marie McQuade) sold 4.35 acres which included the farmhouse to Loch Raven Presbyterian Church in Building of the church began in The farmhouse became and still is the church office where administrative functions occur and classes and committee meetings take place. If any of you know any further history on the property please let me know and I will update our files. Got concerns? You can contact any Trustee and we will be happy to address any property or maintenance issues. In the Service of the Lord, Sue Freeman Third Sunday Discussion Group Because of the Fellowship/Pizza Luncheon after the worship service on Back to Church Sunday, the Third Sunday Discussion Group did not meet. So this month, we will be discussing the book mentioned in last month s Loch Raven Press, How to Love Difficult People: Receiving and Sharing God s Mercy. Publisher s Description.. William P. Smith explains that learning how to deal with difficult people starts with understanding that God's pursuing love is not just for them; it's for you too. You need God's love and forgiveness just as much as they do. Knowing the love of God will change your attitude, your goals, and your actions toward the difficult people in your life. And that just might encourage them to change too! Several copies of the book are still available in the narthex for $3.00 each. You can reimburse the church by placing $3.00 in one of the designated envelopes in the narthex and placing it in the offering plate.

4 MISSION POSSIBLE In Memory of Jody Campbell called home to be with her Lord on August 26, 2013 Jody began serving as a missionary with Operation Mobilization in September, 1980, in France. She then decided to join Wycliffe Bible Translators; her desire was to spread the Gospel in a cross-cultural situation. While in training with Wycliffe, she met Carl Campbell, and they were married on April 17, Jody and Carl have three children: Karis (1990), Emily (1993), and Robert (1995), and one granddaughter, Jezelee. They determined to go to Papua New Guinea and identify a people with whom they could live and learn about the local culture. In 1983 they moved to PNG, settled in the jungle with a people who are hunters and gatherers, and began their life's work --learning the Yade people's spoken language, developing a written alphabet, and developing literacy materials to teach the Yade people to read in their own language. Several of the Yade people became translation helpers and eventually co-translators. Scripture was translated in the Yade language, enabling the people to have the Scripture in their heart language. They also trained teachers to hold literacy classes in the Yade language. Robert, Jezelee, Rowan, Karis, Jody, Carl, Emily January, 2013 In 2011 the Campbells returned to the US for a furlough, and during that time Jody was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She continued to receive treatment until August, She and Carl were continuing translation and literacy work long distance from the JAARS base in North Carolina, communicating with their co-translators in Papua New Guinea. As a church, this congregation has supported Carl and Jody since they prepared to go to PNG in Shortly before Jody died, she expressed her concern about the translation work continuing. A memorial account has been set up in PNG to help do that. To give to the fund, make checks payable to Wycliffe Bible Translators with a separate note :"For the Yade Translation Project in PNG - Account " Mail to Wycliffe Bible Translators, PO Box 62899, Orlando, FL
