23 Session 7: Study Guide for Midterm Exam Part 1 Bible Book Summaries -- Hebrews through 2 Peter Fill in the blank -- 2 points each = 66 points Hebrews Theme: Warnings and encouragement in persecution Author: Author is unnamed Date: A.D. 64 The main purposes of Hebrews are to demonstrate that Christianity is not a mixture of Judaism and the gospel (Judaism with its ceremonial animal sacrifices could never take away sins); to warn believers against neglecting their salvation. Many warnings are given to believers not to shrink back, through unbelief or laziness, into their former beliefs and practices. Rather, through faith and confidence in the perfect sacrifice of Christ, they are admonished to go forward into Christian maturity and usefulness. Like the Children of Israel, it is possible for believers today to spend a lifetime wandering in the wilderness. They may fall into sin such an extent that it brings God s hand of chastisement upon them. Hebrews, however, contains some of the most encouraging promises in all the Word concerning the completed work of Calvary and the believer s security in Christ. Hebrews 11 lists the heroes of faith. James Theme: Genuine Christian faith in persecution Author: Apostle James Date: A.D The book of James develops the practical aspects of how a man's faith will affect his Christian living. While the apostle Paul establishes the doctrine of justification by faith alone, James emphasizes the outworking of this faith in the believer's life and in his relationship to others. "If a man is truly saved," James argues, "his faith in Christ will produce good works:' Topics discussed in this book include: testing of Christian faith; control of the tongue; brotherly love and consideration for fellow believers. 1 Peter Theme: Suffering and glory in persecution Author: Apostle Peter Date: A.D. 60 Peter wrote his first epistle to Christians who had fled into Asia Minor (Turkey) to avoid Nero s persecution. The book encourages suffering Christians to be patient in tribulation, to rejoice with joy unspeakable because of their great hope in Christ, and to live worthy of Him who is coming again. 2 Peter Theme: Faithfulness to Christ in persecution Author: Apostle Peter Date: A.D Peter was awaiting martyrdom. He warns Christian believers that false teachers and scoffers will come and seek to lead them astray, but believers must stand faithful to Christ and reject their godless errors. Because of the imminent return of Christ, Peter admonishes Christians to godly living. Equip Biblical Institute

45 Session 13: Student Presentations and Term Papers Student Presentations Name Date Points /100 Contribute to a group or individual presentation on Teaching one of the General Epistles (Hebrews, James, 1 Peter, 2 Peter, 1 John, 2 John, 3 John, Jude) based on textbooks, online articles, course notes, and other sources. This group project can be a PowerPoint presentation, dramatic skit, role-play, charts, or drawings (15-20 minutes). This will assist student-leaders in developing the creative/critical thinking and teamwork skills essential to effective teaching and servant-leadership. The presentations are an opportunity for students to learn from one another. Students benefit from group interaction as they communicate, cooperate, and collaborate. The public speaking component of this assignment along with formative feedback help students gain experience and confidence. Students learn best in professional learning communities. Student Term Papers Name Date Points /100 Submit a typed 8- to 10-page term paper or illustrated booklet titled Applications from the General Epistles based on textbooks and other sources for sharing with others. Be sure to footnote all the ideas, paraphrases, and direct quotes in your paper, whether from books or the Internet. Booklet should be 2,000-3,000 words in length. Text should be double-spaced. Font should be Times New Roman 12. Begin with an introduction and conclude with an application or call for commitment. Include illustrations and charts. This will assist student-leaders in developing the creative/critical thinking and writing skills essential to effective servant-leadership and college-level writing skills. The term paper or booklet is an opportunity for students to enhance their writing skills. Students multiply their ministry as they communicate what they are learning to family, friends, and those they minister to in written form. Writing helps clarify ideas. Students benefit from the opportunity to both write and speak in formal settings. The public speaking component of this assignment along with formative feedback helps students gain experience and confidence. Group Activities Guide students in revising their term papers. Guide students in reviewing for the final exam. Equip Biblical Institute

46 Session 14: Study Guide for Final Exam Part 1 Bible Book Summaries 1 John through Revelation Fill in the blank -- 2 points each = 66 points 1 John Theme: Instructions for Christian living Author: Apostle John Date: A.D. 85 to 95 The theme of 1 John is the fellowship of God s family. The writer gives instructions in righteous living to God s children. The epistle also tells the believer who he may know he is born again, and how he may have fellowship with God and with other believers. Believers are to hate sin and love one another. False teachers are strongly rebuked, and believers are warned against them. 2 John Theme: Instructions for Christian living Author: Apostle John Date: A.D. 85 to 95 The theme of 2 John is Christ s commandment. Second John is addressed either to a local church or an individual woman. Believers are exhorted to be faithful to the truth in times of spiritual decline because many deceivers are in the world. 3 John Theme: Instructions for Christian living Author: Apostle John Date: A.D. 85 to 95 The theme of 3 John is walking in truth. Third John is a letter addressed to a man named Gaius, who is commended for his hospitality. Diotrephes, a man who wanted to dominate the church, is rebuked. Jude Theme: Warnings against godless teachers Author: Jude Date: A.D Jude warned believers about immoral men who were corrupting the teaching of God's grace. These men taught that since God no longer held the sins of believers against them, they were free to live any way they chose. Jude warned his readers to guard against being entrapped by such teachings and to rescue those who had already been influenced by evil men teaching this heresy. Revelation Theme: Triumph of God over Satan Author: Apostle John Date: A.D. 95 Through an angel, the Lord revealed to John a picture of events that would mark the end of the world as we know it and the manifestation of the Kingdom of God. God also used John's writing to speak to seven local churches in Asia, evaluating their spiritual life and witness. As the end approaches, the world will become a place of unspeakable evil and misery. God will judge all sin and make things right. Satan will meet his final doom. Revelation depicts Jesus Christ in all His power and glory. It tells how He will return to conquer evil and set up His rule. Equip Biblical Institute

48 Debriefing and Testimonials 1. What learning activities did you enjoy most about this course? What assignments were most helpful? How did they help you learn? 2. How have you applied what you learned during this course? What difference is it making? How did this course strengthen your relationship with Jesus and His Body the Church? Group Activity Permit students to share what they have learned in this course. Transfer of Credits to Southern California Seminary To transfer credits from Equip Biblical Institute to Southern California Seminary, students must present a complete portfolio of their course work. The portfolio consists of the quizzes, journal reflections, booklets or term papers, and exams for each course. Upon successful completion of the course, students may transfer units into the Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies degree. If the portfolio for a course is not complete, the credits may not be transferable. Attendance Policy. Attending class on time is important to receive the most out of the course. Entering class late disrupts the learning process of all students. Students are permitted three absences for a 14- week semester course. For the semester (28 classroom hours plus 56 homework hours) courses, more than 10 minutes late is a Tardy; more than 20 minutes late is an Absence. Two tardies count as one absence. College credit cannot be transferred to Southern California Seminary when a student misses four or more class sessions. A grade of NC (No Credit) will be recorded when a student misses four sessions or does not complete coursework on time. Exceptions must be approved in writing by the class instructor, the Site Director, and the Director of Equip Biblical Institute and will involve additional assignments mandated by Equip Biblical Institute. Students who attend all 14 sessions will receive 100 points. Transformational Learning Tip: If you review this portfolio once a year (such as on New Year s Day) as part of a commitment to life change you will exponentially increase your memory and ability to apply this material to your life, family, and ministry.
