1 & 2 Thessalonians Pathways of Discipleship Bible Survey ELM GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH October 31, 2010
Title, Author, and Date 1 & 2 Thessalonians Pathways of Discipleship Bible Survey The Apostle Paul is the author and wrote these letters around 50 AD (a few months apart) Background Thessalonica was founded in 315 BC by a general of Alexander the Great Located on a protected bay in the northwest corner of the Aegean Sea, the city had a favorable location and grew in population, wealth, and importance After 146 BC, Thessalonica served as the capital city of the Roman province of Macedonia Modern-day Salonika, built on the same location, is the second largest city in Greece Paul spent a considerable amount of time there and his preaching about the return of Christ left room for various unanswered questions Themes/Features/Characteristics of 1 Thessalonians Purpose Theme Paul wanted to encourage believers as they faced intense persecution He responded to criticism against his motives in Christian service by explaining how he had conducted his ministry in Thessalonica The presence of low moral standards in Thessalonica led Paul to explain Christian standards for sexual morality The death of some members in the congregation led to questions about how they would participate in the coming return of Christ, and Paul answered their questions The church needed instruction about the healthy use of spiritual gifts The Thessalonian letters are best known for their teaching about the second coming of Jesus Christ and associated events 1 Thessalonians offers congratulations to the believers on their conversion and progress in the Christian faith, along with exhortations toward further progress, with particular emphasis on comfort from and expectancy toward the second coming Congratulations (1:1-3:13) The first half of this letter focuses on the conversion of the Thessalonian believers and their progress in the faith They had proved faithful in the midst of persecution, providing a model for all believers in Macedonia and Greece They had left the worship of idols and turned to the worship of the living God Paul speaks of the virtues of faith, love, and hope in 1:3 Faith produces good works 1
Love results in labor, which means deeds of kindness and mercy Hope, an eschatological term referring to confident expectation of Jesus return, generates steadfastness under trial and persecution Paul s relationship with the Thessalonians is described in terms of gratitude, joy, and prayer Gratitude for their endurance under persecution Joyful anticipation of seeing them again Prayer for the multiplication of their love for one another so they might face trials with renewed strength Exhortations (4:1-5:28) Paul commands the believers to live quietly and keep working; this may be a rebuke against those who quit their jobs because they believed in the immediacy of Jesus return Paul obviously has a high view of work He also teaches them about the rapture Some believers had died since Paul visited the city What would happen to them if Christ returned? Some perhaps feared that their death before the second coming was an irrevocable punishment and loss of salvation Paul assured them that at the return of Christ the dead would rise first to meet the Lord; they would then be joined by living believers; all of these will be forever in the Lord s presence After reassuring them, Paul warns the Thessalonians to watch for the Day of the Lord (the second coming and following events) lest they be taken by surprise Preparedness is more than mental awareness It also includes a mode of conduct characterized by obedience to commands such as those with which the letter closes Show respect for church leaders Leaders must demonstrate understanding and acceptance to all members, especially those who persisted in trying behavior All must acknowledge God s sovereignty and providence by expressing thanks in all circumstances Outline Introduction (1:1) Congratulations (1:2-3:13) Thanksgiving for the exemplary conversion of the Thessalonian believers (1:2-10) Paul s reminiscences concerning his ministry there (2:1-16) Timothy s glowing report about their progress (2:17-3:10) Prayer for the Thessalonian believers (3:11-13) Exhortations (4:1-5:22) To morality and mutual love (4:1-12) To consolation over deceased believers and expectant readiness for the Day of the Lord (4:13-5:11) Miscellaneous exhortations (5:12-22) Conclusion (5:23-28) 2
Themes/Features/Characteristics of 2 Thessalonians Purpose Paul wrote to quiet fanaticism about the second coming of Christ, which had arisen because of a belief in the immediate return of Jesus Encouragement Paul vividly describes the second coming, when persecutors will be judged and the persecuted relieved of their sufferings His purpose is to encourage the Thessalonians by showing how Christ will one day turn the tables in their favor As a result, they are to persevere in persecution He also deals with their misunderstanding of the second coming by telling them it is not immediate; therefore, they should return to their jobs and businesses Looking for Christ s return does not mean cessation of normal living Correction Paul warns them not to be deceived by false prophecy or by an oral or written report forged in his name He refers to the future antichrist, a world leader of wickedness and persecution in the last days This evil leader will demand worship of himself They must remain true to the Scripture and the truth of Jesus Those who follow this evil leader face condemnation Concerns for the church Paul expressed confidence that his readers would persevere in obedience; this was a constant need He was also concerned about the inappropriate conduct by some members They must avoid idleness, settle into productive labor, and earn their own living He also urged the church leaders to be firm but sensitive in the discipline of those who rebelled against his teaching Outline Greeting (1:1-2) Persecution (1:3-12) Thanksgiving for the Thessalonian believers progress in the midst of persecution (1:3-4) Assurance of deliverance from persecution and of divine judgment on persecutors at second coming (1:5-10) Prayer for the Thessalonian believers (1:11-12) Second coming, rapture, Day of the Lord (2:1-17) Denial that the Day of the Lord has arrived (2:1-2) Affirmation of necessary precedents (2:3-15) The rebellion (2:3a) The man of lawlessness (2:3b-15) Benediction (2:16-17) Exhortations (3:1-15) 3
To prayer, love, and stability (3:1-5) To industrious labor (3:6-13) To disciplinary ostracism of disobedient church members (3:14-15) Conclusion (3:16-18) Resources John MacArthur: The MacArthur Bible Handbook Zondervan Handbook to the Bible Lea and Black: The New Testament: Its Background and Message Carson and Moo: An Introduction to the New Testament Lecture Notes from Liberty Theological Seminary, Dr. Donald Fowler Holman Illustrated Study Bible John MacArthur: The MacArthur Bible Commentary Robert H.
