1 I. Course Description BI 497 Theology of Isaiah Fall 2012 Syllabus Gary Spaeth This class is a study of the theological framework and doctrinal interpretation of the book of Isaiah. Special emphasis will be placed upon developing a systematic theological position from Isaiah's writings alone. While we live with an advantage of having New Testament light, what would Isaiah's prophecies and writings mean to those who lived in his day? What would have been the doctrinal beliefs of Isaiah? His book tells us. II. Course Objectives This course will endeavor to: 1. Describe why Isaiah may be referred to as the Romans Road for Old Testament. 2. Explain Isaiah s understanding of the nature of God. 3. Describe How God used Isaiah to communicate the wickedness of the nation of Judah. 4. Using the argument of Isaiah, list the various doctrinal significant passages in Isaiah and how it contributed to Isaiah s overall message to Israel and the gentile nations. 5. Explain Isaiah s understanding of the coming Messiah through the study of the Messianic prophesies throughout Isaiah. III. Course Requirements 1. Reading: a. Read through the book of Isaiah FOUR TIMES. 2 X Due October 12 th 2X Due December 3 rd b. Read the course textbook - Commentary on Isaiah, Joseph A. Alexander. Complete the Required Reading Evaluating Form and turn in on due date. Vol. 1 Pages 1-78 Introduction Vol. 1 Pages Isaiah chapters 1-12 Vol. 2 Pages Isaiah chapters Vol. 2 Pages Isaiah chapters Due Sept. 10th Due Sept. 24th Due Oct. 31st Due Nov. 30th

Write a five page, double spaced paper on the Unity of Isaiah Due SEPTEMBER 28 th. The paper should describe the issue, its development, the significance to the doctrine of Bibliology. Be sure to list and explain the arguments on both sides of the issue. You must reference at least five sources; two should be from Theological Journals. ( b. Write a five page double spaced paper describing, in detail, the messianic prophesies in the Book of Isaiah Due November 12 th. This paper should be written from a stand point of demonstrating to Jewish person how Isaiah s prophesies demonstrate that Jesus Christ is the Messiah. 4. Quizzes: be prepared to be quizzed on material from previous classes. Summary of Due Dates: - Read Commentary on Isaiah Volume 1 pg and form Due: Sept Read Commentary on Isaiah pg and form Due: Sept Unity of Isaiah paper Due: Sept Read Isaiah 2x Due: Oct Midterm Due: Oct Read Commentary on Isaiah Volume 2 pg and form Due: Oct Messianic prophesies in Isaiah Paper Due: Nov Read Commentary on Isaiah Volume 2 pg and form Due: Nov Read Isaiah 2x Due: Dec. 3 - Final Due: Dec. 10 All papers must follow these guidelines or they will be returned ungraded. First page must be a Cover Page (A sample is included with this syllabus) Margins set to one (1) inch Page Numbers on the bottom right of every page except for the cover page Times New Romans or equivalent twelve (12) point font Direct and indirect quotes can only make up 20% of the content of your paper; to exceed this would be reflected by point reductions on the paper s content.

3 BI 497 Theology of Isaiah Fall 2011 Page 3 Use only scripture references. Do not include the entire text of the scriptures. Only include portions of the verse that are absolutely essential. All papers and projects must be the student s own work. No student is permitted to work with another person on any paper or project unless the instructor has given his permission. The following percentage is used in grading all papers: 1. Content (what is said in the paper, quotes, and number of words) % 2. Grammar and spelling (sent. struc., sp., formal writing format)... 30% 3. Format (Title page, outline, bibliography, and footnotes)... 10% All papers should be ed to me using either Microsoft Word or PDF format by 5:00 PM of the date due. The title of the assignment MUST appear in the subject line of the for you to get credit for your work. Once submitted, you should receive a confirmation from me verifying I receive the assignment. If you do not receive a confirmation within 24 hours of sending, please contact me immediately so you do not loose credit for the assignment. All papers MUST be turned in on time. Late papers will be accepted only if prior arrangements have been made and with a loss of five (5) grade points per day late. IV. Spiritual and Academic Integrity Classroom Behavior: 1. Arrive on time. 2. Each student must participate in class discussions. 3. Bring notebook or computer to class to take notes. 4. No sleeping during class. Attendance Policy If you are anywhere from 1 to 9 minutes late, you will be counted as late; if you are 10 minutes or more late, you will be counted as absent. If you leave class 10 minutes or more early, you will be counted as absent. In your student portal, you are able to track your attendance. If you miss more than fifteen (15) percent of this class, you will be automatically dropped from the roster and receive an F for the course. The amount missed contains the accumulation of tardies, cuts, and any other absences. Academic Honesty: Cheating, plagiarism, collusion, and any act designed to give an unfair advantage to the student (such as, but not limited to, submitting the same written assignment for two courses or providing

4 BI 497 Theology of Isaiah Fall 2011 Page 4 false or misleading information in an effort to receive a postponement or an extension on a test, quiz, exam, or other assignment) is considered cheating and will not be tolerated. Plagiarism: Plagiarism is the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one s own original work. Common forms of plagiarism are copying words or ideas and not giving the author credit for them by providing proper reference. Another author s specific words must be placed within quotation marks with an appropriate reference given. Another author s ideas must include an appropriate reference. You may choose to use appropriate footnotes, endnotes, or parenthetical references. V. Grading Your grade will consist of the following: Reading 30% Tests 30% Projects 30% Quizzes 10% VI.
