1 Herald Wheat Ridge Evangelical Lutheran Church Missouri Synod 8600 West 38 th Avenue Wheat Ridge CO Rev. Wayne Woolery, vacancy Pastor Getting to know our temporary under-shepherd Pastor Wayne Woolery JUNE 2013 Page 1 Pastor s Message Page 2 VBS, Sunday School, Thank you Page 3 Rockies, Stephen Ministry Page 4 LWML Page 5 RMD, Former Vicar Page 6 LCMS Convention Page 7 VBS Registration I was born in Southern Minnesota in 1949 and shortly afterwards moved to southern Iowa with my family. I attended high school in Knoxville and Indianola, graduating in I went on to Concordia Teachers College in Seward, Nebraska graduating in 1971 with a Lutheran Teacher s Diploma. In 1972 I married Nancy Matzat, also a Lutheran Teacher. We moved around the country as I served in Lutheran schools in New York, Texas, and Illinois. After serving several years as a Director of Evangelism in Aurora, Illinois, I was accepted at Concordia Theological Seminary in Ft. Wayne, Indiana in the pastoral program. After completing my seminary training, I served as pastor at congregations in Centralia and Mt. Carmel, Illinois, and Homestead and Wellman in Iowa. Through the years the Lord blessed Nancy and me with six children, Michael, Karen, Nathan, Steve, Phil, and Rachel. Both Michael, who lives near Rockford, IL, and Phil, who lives in Grand Rapids, MN, work in forestry. Nathan is a pastor in Cameron, MO, Steve is a Lutheran School teacher in Cedar Falls, IA, Karen is a stayat-home mom, with a degree in social work, living in Cottage Hills, IL and Rachel is Marketing Coordinator at Camp Wartburg in Waterloo, IL. I am now enjoying trying to keep up with twelve grandchildren with another expected in the fall. In 2009 Nancy, my wife of 37 years, succumbed to cancer with which she struggled for thirteen years. I continued to serve the dual parish in Iowa, and also as part-time District Executive for Education for a year and a half. My life took another turn after getting to know Ann Kurth of Denver, Colorado. I decided to take early retirement, married Ann, and moved to Denver. Ann s daughter, Rachel, lives in Denver and her son, Jonah, and his family live in Chicago. Ann has one granddaughter. Since moving to Denver, I have done supply preaching in several congregations in the Denver area and served a vacancy at Summit of Peace, Thornton. I also serve as visitation pastor at Immanuel, Englewood which is also vacant, and assist with visitation at Our Savior in Commerce City. Our church membership is at Our Father Lutheran Church in Centennial. While in Colorado, I have attempted to bring my Spanish Language skills up to conversational level, but I still have a long ways to go. I have an interest in missions, especially in the urban environment. I enjoy running, an interest I developed during college days in Seward. Although much slower now, I still enjoy running and occasionally compete in a 5K race. This past April I ran the River-To-River Relay, an 80-mile course through Southern Illinois, with my sons and daughters. It was a great day, especially being with family. It is my privilege to be able to serve the members of Wheat Ridge Lutheran Church during the pastoral vacancy as your temporary under-shepherd. May the Good Shepherd, the Lamb who was slain, continue to bless you.

2 From the Board of Christian Education SUMMER SUNDAY SCHOOL Beginning June 2, the Sunday school summer class curriculum for preschool through Jr. High is I Spy Salvation s Story. It s a new summer Sunday School series from CPH. A fallen tower, a basket in a river, a small crown, burning coals what does it all mean? Young investigators will gather clues, dig into the Bible, and put all the pieces together to unearth God s plan of salvation for His people. There are Old and New Testament Bible stories that the children will never forget. If interested in leading a summer Sunday school class, please contact Sherry DuValle, , or her at sduvalle45@hotmail.com ====================== VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL All VBS programs are not alike! Tell it on the Mountain stands apart from others because it is VBS with Purpose. At the center of all teachings is God s Word and His gracious gift of the Savior, Jesus Christ. After Tell it on the Mountain is finished, the craft glue dries, the decorations come down, and the snacks are gone, the real message is that the children in our VBS know their need for a Savior and His name is Jesus. Please be sure to fill out the registration form (pg. 7) and turn it in, or go on the church s website and register. In addition, we would like to ask all children and parents to return to Wheat Ridge Lutheran Church for Worship Service on June 23 rd, at 10:00 a.m. to share with our congregation the songs they have learned to praise our Lord! The Mission Project for our VBS is Mercy Forever, Ready Now: Disaster Response, a fund to help build a mountain of hope. You can help! LCMS witness and mercy work provides encouragement, counseling, long-term planning and physical assistance to families affected by catastrophes. $5 provides a drink of fresh, cool water; $10 can provide a nutritious meal; $50 can provide a survival kit (food and water for 3 days, a flashlight, and a Bible); $100 can provide a shelter kit (tent, blankets, sleeping mats, flashlight, food and water for 7 days, a Bible, and activity books) YOU CAN HELP Watch for the supplies list to go up and sign up for the items you wish to contribute. We will need craft supplies as well as food for snacks. Bethesda Lutheran Community Auxiliary wants to thank all the members of Wheat Ridge Lutheran Church for your support, help, love, and prayers at the Craft Sale held here Sunday, May 5. It was VERY successful because of all your kindnesses. THANK YOU. On Saturday, May 18, Carol Braun and Marietta Stephenson delivered all the wonderful donations Wheat Ridge members gave to Bethesda Wellington Home, one resident being Marietta s son, Michael. He has been a resident there since 1980, the only original resident still living there. There are 4 girls and 2 boys. Each of your gifts will improve the quality of life and bring much joy to these residents. You have all been so generous and loving. The residents and staff send their thanks to everyone. All the items donated are greatly appreciated. It was like Christmas in MAY!! A Girlfriend Gathering for Widows, Wives and Friends Food, Fun & Financial Tips Kathleen M. But when we who are in Christ suffer, we also find comfort through Christ, and one of the ways we find this comfort is through others who have found Christ s care and comfort in their sufferings (2 Corinthians 1:4-6). Our Stephen Ministers offer this Christ-like care to those in need. June Think about your life. Are you going through a time of crisis or challenge? Could you benefit from the care of a Stephen Minister? Please enclose a SELF-ADDRESSED & STAMPED ENVELOPE with your order. You do not need to be a Thrivent Member to order tickets. 4 Lutheran Women In Mission Mite Donations Go Over the Top! Joyful praise and thanksgiving to God that the Mission Goal of $1.825 million was met and has been surpassed! At the time this is being published, the amount received in mite donations is $1,834, LWML President Kay Kreklau announced, We are overjoyed that all of the 19 grants selected will receive the funds promised at the LWML Convention in Peoria in Our sisters and brothers in Christ continue to faithfully give to help reach out and share about our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to those who are hurting and lost around the world. At the 35th Biennial LWML Convention to be held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, June 27-30, 2013, a new LWML Mission Goal will be prayerfully selected by the delegates for the mission work of the Lord during the biennium. Mite offerings over the current $1,825,000 mission goal will be added to the new Mission Goal. Your mite offerings, along with the contributions of other LWML supporters across our country, will help to continue to fund the mission grants to be selected at the LWML Convention in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in June Don t forget to bring your filled Mite box to church on MITE SUNDAY JUNE 16 Fostering Faith in the Forest - $3,000 This mission grant is to assist in nurturing God s children who have been raised in foster homes, sometimes many more than one foster home, so they may experience the love of Christ in the activities and from the staff that is often life-changing. When asked, So, tell me about this LWML. I ve only heard bits and pieces about it, a woman thought, Why haven t I gotten myself better prepared to describe the work of LWML? She was passionate about the impact of the beloved women s auxiliary of the LCMS. She vowed to be ready at the next opportunity. She would share her commitment to the mission of assisting each woman of The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod in affirming her relationship with the Triune God so that she is enabled to use her gifts in ministry to the people of the world. NEW LWML OFFICERS ELECTED FOR President: Shared Responsibility Vice President: Judy Kugler Secretary: Maki DeLaet Treasurer: Carol Braun Mission Goal #7 Lutheran Social Services Disaster Response will be responding to the needs of those affected by all the tornadoes in Texas and Oklahoma. 6 Christ s Church in This America! Baptized for this moment (Acts 2:38-39) 65 th Convention of The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod In St. Louis, Missouri July 20-25, 2013 The national convention of the Synod shall afford an opportunity for worship, nurture, fellowship and the communication of vital information. It is the principal legislative assembly, which amends the Constitution and Bylaws, considers and takes action on reports and overtures, and handles appropriate appeals. It establishes general positions and policies of the Synod, provides overall program direction and priorities, and evaluates all such positions, programs, policies, directions, and priorities in order to provide responsible service for and on behalf of its members. Only a national convention of the Synod shall authorize affiliation or association and the discontinuance of such affiliation or association of the Synod with other church bodies, synods or federations National Offering Every three years LCMS households, congregations and organizations are invited to participate in a synod-wide gathering of financial gifts called the National Offering. Leading with a collection received in worship services during the 2013 Regular Convention of The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod in St. Louis, this triennium s National Offering gives participants five choices through which they can share Christ s forgiveness and mercy both at home and abroad. It also affords LCMS congregations and their members an opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to our life together as the world s leading confessional Lutheran body. For the triennium, five gift designations cover a range of Witness, Mercy, Life Together efforts, all of which happen only with broad support from LCMS congregations and households. Baptized for this moment, you are free to join with your fellow brothers and sisters in Christ in sharing His forgiveness and mercy in a world desperately in need of it. Please join with others in support of this triennium s National Offering. Members of Wheat Ridge have all received a donation envelope in your mailboxes in May. Please use your envelope to support this worthwhile cause. Gifts for the National Offering are tax-deductible as allowed by law. Whenever possible, individual taxdeductible receipts will be issued to the donor making the gift. 6 P age
