5 Capacitación para Ministros Eclesiales - Liderazgo Juvenil Avanzado Training for Ecclesial Ministers and Young Adult Leaders with Advanced Formation: Expanding Horizons for Lay Ministry Background of the program Professors: Carlos Carrillo, MEd.; Carmen María Cervantes, EdD; Ken Johnson- Mondragón, D.Min. Candidate; Adriana Visoso Valverde A program that expands the participants vision, develops their administrative sills, and strengthens their own spirituality as Church leaders in the United States. To offer theoretical knowledge and practical training for a transformational leadership at the institutional level of the Catholic Church in the United States, which responds to the reality of the Hispanic people. To nurture the lives of Hispanic leaders, both in the spiritual and psychological aspects, in such a way that they may envision themselves as Christians capable of revitalizing the Church through effective pastoral action, rooted in the Gospel and in Catholic Social Teaching. To provide tools for the development and practice of lay eclesial ministry, in the spirit of the Revised National Certification Standards for Lay Ecclesial Ministers. To conduct exercises for critical analysis, pastoral planning, conflict resolution, budgeting, directing pastoral processes, and other exercises to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of ministry at the institutional level. To share ministry experiences, ideals, and challenges, and create a network of peers in order to promote the professional status of Hispanic lay ecclesial ministers at the parish, diocesan, regional, and national levels. Ideal candidates for this training Priests, religious sisters and brothers, deacons or laity, at different levels of ministry in dioceses, parishes, and apostolic movements. People over 21 years of age, who have demonstrated leadership at the institutional level, and have reached an intermediate or advanced level of pastoral and theological formation. Directors or faculty in formation institutes for Hispanic ministry, who would like to offer the program locally under a license granted by Instituto Fe y Vida. This is a revised and updated version of a program developed by the National Catholic Council for Hispanic Ministry (NCCHM) entitled, El poder es servir: Liderazgo latino para la Iglesia y la sociedad. NCCHM offered three national pilot programs, with nearly 100 people graduated, in the late 1990s. It was offered by the NCCHM in 2001 as a training of trainers program for seven Hispanic national and regional formation institutes. Some years later, the Mexican American Cultural Center For those of us who were trained as ecclesial ministers in another country, this program is the gateway to the structure and operations of the Catholic Church in the United States. Jesús Ábrego, Director of Hispanic Ministry, Diocese of Beaumont (MACC) offered the training to eight diocesan Hispanic formation institutes. Instituto Fe y Vida is one of the institutes initially certified to teach and adapt the program to its constituency. In , it offered the program during its Annual Summer Program, with a two-year format, and has offered several of its subjects in advanced seminars. Recently, Fe y Vida secured the rights to revise and update the program so that it responds to today s reality, particularly in light of the Revised National Certification Standards for Lay Ecclesial Ministers, approved by The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in It has also obtained permission to offer the program as a training of trainers to other institutes, and license it so that they can offer it locally. Characteristics of the program revised by Instituto Fe y Vida Keeps the general vision, ideals, main objectives, and foundational subject matter of the original program. Has updated content and processes that respond to today s reality. Includes the advances that the Church has made in the last decade, in particular those related to lay ecclesial ministry. 5

6 Two Modalities for Participating in the Training: Personal and Institutional I learned a great deal about the structure and organization of the Church, about the mission of the laity, and also about fundraising, all of which inspired me to pursue doctoral studies. Rudy Vargas, IV, Field Consultant, Catholic School Advantage, University of Notre Dame. Our team took the training together, and since then we have offered it three times. Several graduates serve as parish coordinators of Hispanic ministry; others are directing programs, and all are guiding and forming leaders. I am very excited about this revised and updated program! Estela Villagrán Manancero, Coordinator of Hispanic Ministry, Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis. 1. Personal growth in ministry Pastoral certification: 40 class-hours per module Diocesan and parish personnel in Hispanic Ministry, Catechesis, Liturgy, and other ecclesial ministries Members of diocesan and parish councils Hispanic pastoral leaders interested in formation as ecclesial ministers in the U.S. Catholic Church Young adult leaders and advisers in Pastoral Juvenil Hispana Requirements: Advanced pastoral-theological formation and leadership experience at the institutional level. 2. Dioceses and institutes that would like to offer the training Certification and resources for local implementation Pastoral institutes and schools of ministry serving Hispanics Diocesan offices of Hispanic Ministry Requirements: (a) Participation of the director plus two faculty members with MA degrees or equivalent; (b) To learn more, contact Walter F. Mena, Director of Programs. Who are lay ecclesial ministers? Lay ecclesial ministers are those who serve publicly within the structures of the Church parishes, schools, diocesan offices, and other Catholic institutions with the authorization of the bishop. They collaborate in a complementary way with the ordained ministers in the saving mission of Christ, thus their service presupposes considerable preparation, formation, and professional competency. What are the Revised National Certification Standards for Lay Ecclesial Ministers? These Standards are a set of professional guidelines for lay ecclesial ministers, which include the vision as well as the competencies required of them, in light of the document Co-Workers in the Vineyard of the Lord, published by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). Why is this training offered by Instituto Fe y Vida? Instituto Fe y Vida played a pivotal role through the Accreditation and Certification Commission of the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry (NFCYM) to ensure that people working in pastoral juvenil hispana at the parish or diocesan level may be certified. Certification requires advanced formation following the approach offered in this training. Since persons serving in other ministries may also benefit from this training, Fe y Vida designed the program for a broader audience. Supported by: FIP National Catholic Council for Hispanic Ministry Federación de Institutos Pastorales National Catholic Conference of Diocesan Directors of Hispanic Ministry National Catholic Network de Pastoral Juvenil Hispana 6
