THE DIOCESE OF SOUTHWELL & NOTTINGHAM GROWING THE CHURCH WIDER, YOUNGER AND DEEPER A statement from The Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham, The Rt Revd Paul Williams and the Archdeacon of Newark, the Venerable David Picken The Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham incorporates the City of Nottingham, the whole County of Nottinghamshire and five parishes in South Yorkshire. The population is 1.15 million 51% live in the greater Nottingham conurbation, 31% in ex-mining areas and 18% in rural. There are 305 churches (252 parishes), served by 142 stipendiary clergy and licensed lay workers. In 2011 the Diocese reaffirmed its commitment to Joining Together in the Transforming Mission of God with a focus on three core strands: Living Worship, Growing Disciples and Seeking Justice. A deployment plan for 2020 ensures that overall levels of stipendiary ministry are maintained at 2012 levels. The process involved wide engagement from clergy and laity, refocusing parishes on growth. Following the arrival of a new diocesan bishop in June 2015 we are now looking beyond 2020 at what kind of church we would like to be in 2025 and As a diocese we have made a refreshed commitment to care for every soul in the diocese with an increased focus on growing disciples. The Senior Staff team has established the first stage of a vision to grow the church wider, younger and deeper. Wider in that we will seek to grow disciples in every part of the diocese, with no retreat from any community: urban centre, outer estates, rural villages or market towns. Younger in that we will seek fresh ways to harness the boldness and creativity of children, students and young people across the diocese, not least in Nottingham which is the 4 th youngest city outside London. Deeper as we grow in knowing Christ, so that as His disciples we can be an increasing blessing to the people among whom we live and serve in the workplace, family and community. As part of a renewed strategy for growth we aspire to be purposeful and imaginative in: welcoming new disciples into the fellowship of Christ and his church; commissioning younger leaders (16-30) inspired and equipped to serve God s purposes in the world; and serving as one church united in contending for the gospel. We long to welcome new and younger disciples in every community across the diocese, aligning our energies and resources around this quest. In this new chapter every parish has an opportunity to review its role within the diocesan mission, so that it can play a significant part in the strategic commitment to growing the church wider, younger and deeper. Bishop Paul has said: It is my hope that each worshipping community will develop a compelling picture of its own future in God s purpose with an expectation of growing numerically and in the scope of its mission. It is my prayer that the new Rector of St Mary Magdalene and Team Rector of Hucknall will have the creative leadership and imagination to nurture the present life of the churches, plan for growth and reach out to the unchurched of all ages in its locality. 3

The Newstead Deanery The Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham includes the city of Nottingham and many former coalfield and rural communities across the whole of Nottinghamshire and a few parishes in South Yorkshire. There are 305 Anglican church buildings in the 252 parishes served by 142 stipendiary clergy and licensed lay workers and many other committed volunteers. The Deanery of Newstead comprises a mixture of towns and villages of varying sizes in a former coalfield area of the county with a population of 137,500 and growing all the time with new housing developments. There is a pride in its industrial heritage, which has left its imprint on these communities, who have a strong sense of family, cohesion and loyalty to the local area. Much use is made by our population of their local church, especially for the occasional offices, such that some of our mission opportunities and strategies are grounded in Christendom mode. That said, there are a good and growing number of pioneering projects and a focus on church planting and grafting. The new Team Rector of the Parish Church of St. Mary Magdalene, Hucknall will be joining us at an important time in the life of the Deanery [where I have recently been appointed Area Dean]. Over the last twelve years, my personal experience, as a local Parish Priest, has been of Newstead as a healthy and supportive deanery, committed to the growing disciples wider, younger and deeper lead from our Bishops and to maintaining a strong and vibrant local presence for mission and ministry in all the communities of our Deanery. With reducing clergy numbers we have to think how best we can work together. Colleagues meet regularly at Chapter for support, encouragement and prayer as well as to receive information etc. The deanery works in four clusters, who organise themselves, in different ways, for prayer and study together. Ordained and lay members of Deanery Synod work collaboratively and are excited by what God is doing here. I am more than happy to chat to anyone considering this post. I can be contacted at fionashouler@hotmail.com or on Revd. Canon Fiona Shouler Area Dean of Newstead Deanery 4

Where we live The Team Ministry is situated in the town of Hucknall, Nottinghamshire, which is approximately seven miles north of Nottingham City Centre, and lies in the south of the Ashfield District. The town was historically a centre for framework knitting and then for mining but is now a focus for other industries as well as providing housing for workers in Nottingham. There is easy access to the M1 (Junctions 26 & 27), and the Robin Hood Railway Line and the Nottingham Tram System which connects Hucknall with the centre of Nottingham and beyond. This has resulted in the town becoming a desirable commuter area. St Mary Magdalene is situated in the centre of the town adjacent to the market place car park. The housing within this area varies from older terrace to pre and post war council and private housing. Within the last three years, the additional housing developments have raised the population significantly. Recently completed is the Hucknall town centre improvement scheme, which has become a pedestrian zone and hosts the town s market on Fridays and Saturdays. The largest employer in the town is Rolls Royce, which has in excess of 900 staff, but new industrial developments are taking place on the sites formerly occupied by the coal mines and their supporting industries There is a varied mix of shops on the High Street near the town centre and supermarkets including Tesco, Aldi and Iceland are within the Hucknall boundary. There are a number of schools in Hucknall, which include two Church of England Voluntary Aided Schools: Hucknall National Primary School and The National Academy. 6

Team vision strategy The Hucknall Team seeks to engage with God s mission of saving love for everyone in this diverse community. Our strategy for doing this recognises the building blocks that need to be in place to grow faith and thus grow God s church. We encounter people in the community through the many and various outreach events and services we offer; we seek God by praying with and for each other; we invite people to learn more of God through various nurture and discipleship courses; and we aim to move forward to initiation through baptism and confirmation. Together we continue to seek to mature in faith and continue to share God s love so that this strategy for growth is renewed and built upon continually. Along with our Diocese we aim to grow disciples Wider, Younger, and Deeper. 7

St Mary Magdalene vision strategy Recently, St Mary Magdalene church DCC undertook a number of congregational and council workshops, seeking to define a mission statement for the church. The aim was to provide an understanding that could be applied to future church activities and to inform a five year strategic development plan for The John Godber Centre church hall. The resulting mission statement was: Making a difference in people s lives by the love of God The DCC also commissioned an external consultant to advise on how St Mary Magdalene church and The John Godber Centre could work together more effectively and efficiently, and communicate their relationship more effectively. This was encapsulated in the church and Centre closer relationship concept : 2 as 1 and 1 as 2 Ensuring that the mission statement of the church always underpins the work of church and Centre, St Mary Magdalene church has committed to the vision: Making a difference in people s lives by the love of God A place for faith A place for heritage A place for all The place for celebration The place for business The place for community 8

The three Churches in our Team Ministry The town of Hucknall is experiencing a time of change as its population grows and new homes are built. The historic link of families living together in a tight knit community is ceasing to be the experience of the majority of the community and this is felt keenly, especially by some of the older people. The team of churches have also experienced change in the last year of ministry. St John s Team Vicar, who was also the School Chaplain of the National School, left in This has moved the ministry team from the norm of three priests in the three separate churches to a team of two priests ministering throughout. This change of dynamics has been sudden and has been especially highlighted by the Rector moving on shortly afterwards. The full time vicar of Linby and Papplewick, part of the Hucknall Cluster, is now more involved in some aspects of our shared ministries across occasional offices, services and schools work. Whilst the current number of clergy in the cluster may remain in this format, the diocese will want the new Team Rector to form a view on this in their first year in post and then engage in a conversation with the Archdeacon in the first instance as to the local ministry needs. 10

The three Churches in our Team Ministry (continued) A new chapter in Nottinghamshire s history St Mary Magdalene Church, Hucknall, a parish church bursting with stories. St Mary Magdalene church has a rich history and heritage stretching back 1,000 years. Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the church underwent significant restoration in 2015 and now also serves as a unique heritage hub for the county. Discover how the world famous poet, Lord Byron came to be interred within the church; let us introduce you to his daughter, Ada Lovelace, the mother of computing; learn how Big Ben was named after a giant bare knuckle boxer buried in the churchyard; and marvel at one of the largest collections of stained glass windows in England, by famous Victorian artist C. E. Kempe. There are interactive tours to follow, adult and children s interpretation and a brand new refreshments area, where you can relax with tea and biscuits. For information and opening times: Lord Byron - world famous poet and leading figure of the romantic era Ben Caunt - champion boxer who gave his name to the bell Big Ben Ada Lovelace - the world s first computer programmer St Mary Magdalene Church - home to the greatest story ever told for over 1,000 years C.E. Kempe - the greatest Victorian stained glass artist Scan to see inside the church St Mary Magdalene There are two retired ministers and a lay team of four Readers and three RLMs, supported by a growing congregation who share their varied gifts in support of the church s mission, nurture, outreach, fabric and finance. In 2014 and 2015 St Mary Magdalene Church undertook restoration of the exterior of the building with the help of an award from The Heritage Lottery Fund, funds from Notts Historic Churches, and the Church s own restoration fund. Total spend was just over 164,000. All Church activities are now effectively supported by development of the south transept refreshments area which included levelling the floor, new kitchen facilities, new stackable tables and chairs, new disabled and assisted toilets. New displays were also installed throughout the Church, along with interactive tour guides, to interpret the history and heritage to which the building has custody. The poet Lord Byron s remains and those of his daughter, Ada, are interred in the family crypt beneath the nave. The Church website (new in 2015), informs online visitors of the scope of the Church s activities and mission and regular enquiries for occasional offices are now received through this channel. Recruitment and retention of stewards for welcoming and assisting visitors continues to be a challenge but a core volunteer group strive to ensure the Church is open morning and afternoon, every day except Sundays when there are worship services at 8am, 10am and 6pm. Relationships with history and heritage experts and societies established during the restoration project continue to support the church in its heritage activities. The Church continues its membership of promotional tourism and history organisations to promote it as an important small visitor attraction. A programme of events over the coming years still seeks to establish St Mary Magdalene Church as a Heritage Hub within Nottinghamshire. The ongoing success of this venture depends on both the Church and the community working together to plan and run events that strengthen personal relationships and preserve this essential historic building right in the centre of the community. Building on the success of the 2014/15 restoration project, 2016 saw the DCC consider the potential of a further project to address redevelopment of the North Transept, which at present is largely used as a storage area. Consideration is ongoing. St Mary Magdalene Church hosts annual concerts and a community Christmas Tree Festival as well as school visits and the International Byron Festival. It continues to be visited by people from around the world who have an interest in Lord Byron and increasingly, his daughter, Ada Lovelace. The Church conducts a variety of work to support local, national and international charities, either financially or practically, including social outreach projects When I needed a neighbour and the Under One Roof food bank. Further afield, strong links with Burundi and the Baho Project in Mutanga Nord sees the Church support the growing Christian community and children s education. 11

The three Churches in our Team Ministry (continued) St Peter and St Paul s St John the Evangelist St Peter and St Paul s Church seeks the Holy Spirit in its catholic, charismatic worship and has been fortunate to see growth through God s grace. There is a full time Team Vicar and a lay team of one Reader and two RLMs who are supported by many able and willing people in the congregation. St Peter and St Paul s congregation are generous with their compassion, time, finances and ministry. We continue to reach out into the local community in a number of ways. There is a thriving youth group full of young people from the local estate, the Friday Tots toddler group and regular activities for older people. St Peter and St Paul s Community Hall is also the home of The West Hucknall Community Cinema Club which has had over 3080 attendances since it opened in The Cinema facilities are also used to host ecumenical Lent courses based on films, as well as Advent courses and discipleship and nurture courses such as Start and The Happiness Lab. The hall and grounds have been extensively improved over recent years and the Church is now seen as An Oasis of Welcome and Worship for Everyone. St Peter and St Paul s is always seeking new ways to engage with its community, from the annual All Hallows Eve BBQ which caters for over 250 people, to hot meals for the elderly and supporting families with the Tesco Fare Share initiative. The Community Hall and Church also host many groups and activities which are enjoyed by everyone from Brass Band Concerts to Fashion Shows and an excellent puppet ministry team which enhance Christmas and Easter Worship. St John the Evangelist completed stonework repairs to a pillar and in the vestry after successful fundraising. The biggest challenges to the Church continue to be the low numbers of regular worshippers and the financial responsibilities which fall on a small and elderly congregation. With the help of a grant from WREN, January 2018 saw the start of stage 1 of the renovation of the community hall kitchen and toilets to improve health and safety as well as be more aesthetically pleasing. A community audit was undertaken in 2017 to see where the halls might further meet the needs of the local community. It is anticipated that the renovations to the hall will bring in further bookings as well as being an improved facility for Church functions and our regular jumble sales. Opportunities for worship, faith development and pastoral care are continually improving at St John s. The Church is accessed by local schools on a more regular basis and is now open for prayer twice a week. The doors are opened and talks given about the Church s history as part of the Bus Tours organised by Hucknall Tourism and Regeneration Group. St John s has also hosted concerts for the community and as part of our regular fundraising activities. 12

The three Churches in our Team Ministry (continued) The Community Centres/Halls Levels of unemployment continue to be high in Hucknall, and the Community Centres run by the church are well placed for people to meet and find activities that give them transferable skills which might improve their prospects for employment. In a similar way each Centre provides an outlet for those taking early retirement who can act as volunteers, which gives a sense of belonging and being valued. The DCC has recently developed a new vision for how the Church and The John Godber Centre s relationship can be defined and communicated to the community. This vision is encapsulated in the concept 2 as 1 and 1 as 2 (see pg8 for details). It is anticipated that these activities will continue to expand keeping the church and community Centres at the focal point of community activity in Hucknall. Following on from this work, a five year strategic plan (begun summer 2017) was developed by The John Godber Centre Operating Board whose members are drawn from the DCC, Church congregation and the Centre Manager. The plan will see refurbishment of the building and its facilities. It should be noted that the Centre employs one full time Manager and eight part time staff. The John Godber Centre Operating Board oversee implementation of a five year strategy ( ). The rector of St Mary Magdalene serves as the Centre Manager s line manager and is the chairperson and a Director of St Mary s Trading Company Limited, a separate, legal entity for the purpose of running two licensed bars. The Centre has an annual turnover c. 140k. St Mary Magdalene s The John Godber Centre appeals to both community and business users for regular and ad hoc bookings. It is home to over 50 groups and on average, 1,000 people pass through its doors each week to use the Centre for: Community weddings, parties, theatre, bereavement support, U3A, playgroups Business dance schools, martial arts, weight control groups, children s groups, fitness classes Church Sunday School, Pram Club, Mothers Union, Bible Study. To date, the installation of WiFi throughout the building, upgrading of toilets on both floors, and refurbishment of public areas and the first floor licensed bar has been accomplished. In 2016, the Centre hosted over 150 celebratory events, including birthdays (all age ranges), christenings, funerals, wedding receptions and anniversaries. It is also used by the Church for social and business meetings. 13

The three Churches in our Team Ministry (continued) St Peter and St Paul s Community Hall continues to host many activities for the local community such as The West Hucknall Community Cinema Club, community breakfasts and meals, seasonal fairs, BBQ s and groups for all ages, including a flourishing Youth Group and Over 60 s group. Friday Tots, Slimming World U3A Karaoke, Yoga, Dog Training, Age UK exercise classes, and the Hucknall and Linby Brass Band are regular external users of the facilities in addition to many private bookings and church events. In addition to services and occasional offices this church family have also hosted Brass Band Concerts, Cream Teas for the community, a large BBQ for the whole community at Halloween and services for adults with learning disabilities. The hall is also used for various fund raising events to aid other charities. At St John the Evangelist s Church and community halls, 2016 saw a large number of people come through the doors for our fairs, jumble sales, social events as well as through our hall booking system. Some bookings, especially for parties, have come through word-of-mouth. St John s LAMBS, a monthly congregation for children and their families based in the church s Community Halls, continues to grow and thrive. A grant for LAMBS was secured enabling data projection and a sound system to be installed in Haydon Hall. The West Hucknall Community Cinema Club cinema offers: a full 15ft HD screen surround sound experience, regular screenings are FREE for all people & organisations who become members of the club, comfortable seating, beanbags for young people and refreshments, regular movies for the whole community at least twice a month, fully accessible community hall with loop facilities and ample free parking in the hall car park or on street. The cinema facilities, a huge variety of films and the use of the community hall are also available for hire for private parties and other charities, organisations and for educational purposes. The Community Halls are in regular use, especially in the evenings, with regular bookings from Weight Watchers, Zumba, Just Good Friends - Day Centre for the elderly, Brownies and Guides, a Baby Signing group and a Residents and Tenants Association as well as hosting a craft group, and a monthly Afternoon Tea run by church members. 14

Schools Inspired and guided by the vision that every child in Hucknall should know the name of Jesus, relationships have been built between the Team Ministry and schools throughout the town. Last year alone, over 150 acts of worship were led by clergy and lay readers across all schools in Hucknall. There are particularly close links with the Church of England-aided National Schools, founded in Hucknall is one of the few places in the country to offer church-aided education to children across the entire age spectrum. Pupils, teachers and parents from National Primary and Academy come to St Mary Magdalene on special occasions such as the schools carol services, leavers services and Education Sunday. Both schools also have ties with the parish of Mutanga Nord in Burundi. All Hucknall primaries participate in the annual Time Travelling project, in which children visit churches in the town to learn about their history and purpose. With the motto Care, share, be fair and be the best you can, National Primary School educates over 400 pupils. An act of worship is held each day, including weekly collective worship. This is often supported or led by the school s chaplain, a lay reader in the Team Ministry. Pupils are encouraged to take part in these services, while a youth worker also leads the weekly Year 6 cell group. Every class makes an annual visit to St Mary Magdalene. Other examples of cooperation include Christian art projects, a school cross made during Lent and displayed in Southwell Minster, and a banner competition. Most of the school s governors are Christians, with meetings opening in prayer and ending with the Grace. National Primary enjoys a sound reputation locally, and was rated Good in its most recent Ofsted and SIAMS inspections in The National Academy, granted Academy status in 2011, has over 1150 pupils aged 11 to 18. The Team Rector is a key member of its governing body, enabling oversight of all aspects, especially quality assurance of the school s ethos and direction. Communion services are generally held once a term for pupils and once per half-term for staff, although there is scope for a more visible church presence. The values of achievement, respect, charity, humility, wisdom and service are central to the school s outlook and approach. In its last Ofsted inspection in 2014, National was graded Good overall, and Outstanding in leadership and management. SIAMS gave the Academy an Outstanding rating in 2015, emphasising that explicitly articulated Christian vision and values are deeply embedded in the daily life of the academy and have a positive impact on behaviours, attitudes and achievements. Since September 2016, National s year 12 and 13 students have been based in a modern building at Hucknall Sixth Form Centre on Portland Road, sharing facilities with their counterparts from the town s Holgate Academy. 15
