Parish Profile 2019 Incumbent-designate for St Mary Magdalene with St John the Evangelist

Welcome Welcome to this Profile. We hope that in the following pages you will find much to interest you in the possibility of becoming our new incumbent-designate. The current Parish of the Hucknall Team Ministry consists of three churches St Mary Magdalene, St John the Evangelist, and St Peter & St Paul s. With support of the Bishop, the churches have requested that the Team Ministry be split into two new parishes i) St Mary Magdalene with St John the Evangelist, Hucknall and ii) St Peter and St Paul s, West Hucknall. It is anticipated that the proposed pastoral scheme will be completed in Until then the incumbent-designate would technically be part of the Hucknall Team Ministry with responsibility for St Mary Magdalene with St John the Evangelist. Another colleague is responsible for St Peter and St Paul s and would become its first incumbent. So please read on and decide whether God might be calling you to become our new incumbent-designate. Martin Kowalski and Jacqui Parker, Churchwardens. 2

Our Diocese - Statement from Bishop Paul Williams DeFacto [CC BY-SA 4.0 ( from Wikimedia Commons A Statement from the Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham, the Rt Revd Paul Williams and the Archdeacon of Newark, the Venerable David Picken. evenings around the diocese. We have discerned a series of emerging priorities that will facilitate growing new disciples in every parish across the diocese. Compelled by the love of Christ by 2023 we will seek to: Welcome 7000 new disciples into the fellowship of Christ and his church The Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham incorporates the City of Nottingham, the whole County of Nottinghamshire and five parishes in South Yorkshire. The population is 1.15 million 51% live in the greater Nottingham conurbation, 31% in ex-mining areas and 18% in rural. There are 305 churches (252 parishes), served by 142 stipendiary clergy and licensed lay workers. In 2016 a refreshed diocesan vision was embraced across the diocese, recognising the imperative for Growing Disciples: wider, younger, deeper. Wider in that we will seek to grow disciples in every part of the diocese, with no retreat from any community: urban centre; outer estates; rural villages; or market towns Younger in that we will seek fresh ways to harness the boldness and creativity of children, students and young people across the diocese, not least in Nottingham which is the 4th youngest city outside London Deeper as we grow in knowing Christ, so that as his disciples we can be an increasing blessing to the people among whom we live and serve in the workplace, family and community. The Bishops Senior Staff, Bishop s Council and Diocesan Synod have demonstrated their clear commitment to sharing in all aspects of this vision and strategy. In autumn 2016 more than PCC members attended 5 vision Commission 1000 younger leaders (especially year olds) equipped and inspired to serve the purposes of God in the Church and society Plant or graft 75 New Worshipping Communities (NWCs) across the diocese to increase our reach in telling the story of Jesus to all Grow 25 larger Resource Churches with clear commitment to develop leaders, plant New Worshipping Communities, and disciple the young Serve and pray together as 1 Church contending for the gospel in every community and sphere of public life in our city, county and region. In this new chapter every parish has an opportunity to review its role within the diocesan mission, so that it can play a significant part in the strategic commitment to Growing Disciples wider, younger and deeper. Bishop Paul has said; It is my hope that each worshipping community will develop a compelling picture of its own future in God s purpose with an expectation of growing numerically and in the scope of its mission. There is the possibility of considering a graft into St John s to increase capacity to sustain present ministry and new services to reach wider in Hucknall. It is my prayer that the new incumbentdesignate will have the creative leadership and imagination to nurture the present life of the churches, plan for growth and reach out to the unchurched of all ages in its locality. 4

Our Deanery The Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham includes the city of Nottingham and many former coalfield and rural communities across the whole of Nottinghamshire and a few parishes in South Yorkshire. There are 305 Anglican church buildings in the 252 parishes served by 142 stipendiary clergy and licensed lay workers and many other committed volunteers. The Deanery of Newstead comprises a mixture of towns and villages of varying sizes in a former coalfield area of the county with a population of 137,500 and growing all the time with new housing developments. There is a pride in its industrial heritage, which has left its imprint on these communities, who have a strong sense of family, cohesion and loyalty to the local area. Much use is made by our population of their local church, especially for the occasional offices, such that some of our mission opportunities and strategies are grounded in Christendom mode. That said, there are a good and growing number of pioneering projects and a focus on church planting and grafting. The new incumbent-designate will be joining us at an important time in the life of the Deanery. Over the last twelve years, my personal experience, as a local Parish Priest, has been of Newstead as a healthy and supportive deanery, committed to the growing disciples wider, younger and deeper lead from our Bishops and to maintaining a strong and vibrant local presence for mission and ministry in all the communities of our Deanery. With reducing clergy numbers we have to think how best we can work together. Colleagues meet regularly at Chapter for support, encouragement and prayer as well as to receive information etc. The deanery works in four clusters, who organise themselves, in different ways, for prayer and study together. Ordained and lay members of Deanery Synod work collaboratively and are excited by what God is doing here. I am more than happy to chat to anyone considering this post. I can be contacted at fionashouler@hotmail.com or on Revd. Canon Fiona Shouler Area Dean of Newstead Deanery 5

Staging of The Nativity at St Mary Magdalene church, with an all-age cast drawn from all churches in the Team and wider community. Our Vision We want to dream dreams and to think big and bold for the community and parish of Hucknall. Given recent and future changes to our staffing and structure, the Hucknall churches do not have an adopted vision that matches our current needs. We are very keen to develop such a vision with you soon after your appointment. However, in two visioning sessions held recently, clergy, lay ministry and PCC members expressed the following aims: to embrace the dioceasan mission of growing disciples wider, younger and deeper to reach people of all ages and backgrounds in Hucknall to invite others to know Christ to grow together in maturity of faith to encounter people in community and worship to broaden and deepen relationships between the churches As part of the work done in our visioning sessions, we have identified the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats shown right. 8 Christmas Pudding Get Together at the John Godber Centre Our Wider Mission We support God s Mission, prayerfully, financially and practically; in our local area, nationally and around the world. The church commits to tithing a percentage of our income and distributing it to charities suggested by members of the congregation. Other efforts include: Donations to the Under One Roof Food Bank When I needed a neighbour - a series of bimonthly appeals, raising awareness and practical support for different social issues locally and globally. We mainly ask for practical donations for our neighbours in need. Our appeals have included a blanket drive for refugees in Calais, a bra collection that enables women at risk of being trafficked to set up their own business, a shoe box toy appeal and bonding squares and hats for our local neonatal unit Eating regular Big Brekkies for Christian Aid (run by our G2G youth group) to raise awareness of the plight of communities around the world Children from our G2G youth group, helping to deliver The Big Brekkie Long-term support for Water Aid (St John s) and the Leprosy Mission Strong links with Burundi, particularly with the church in Mutanga Nord and the Baho Project, supporting vulnerable families and children s education A Strawberry Tea Get Together, held to celebrate the life of Jo Cox MP. Using our great community links with our local Tesco, we provided this free event for over 120 people from local community groups A Christmas Pudding Get Together, which was great fun for local carers. Lots of puddings and entertainment all donated by local businesses. We even had a special visit from Santa with a gift for everyone! An annual Christmas Tree Festival, attended by over 4,000 visitors in 2018 A church in Mutanga Nord and children from the Baho Project. A jumble sale at the John Godber Centre which raises an average of 1,350 per month through the dedication of a team of over 50 volunteers. 8

Our Community Situated half-way between Mansfield and Nottingham, close to the M1 and within easy reach of the likes of Sherwood Forest and the Peak District, Hucknall boasts a proud history of coal mining, textile manufacturing and aero engineering. Yet far from being rooted in the past, this town of 30,000 people from a variety of backgrounds is blossoming and embracing the future. Extensive housing developments, a revamped, pedestrianised town centre, a brand-new road, artisan shops and an integrated transport network of trams, trains and buses are just a few examples of Hucknall s ongoing growth and rebirth. The church is proud to be right at the heart of this thriving community, in more ways than one. With its central location by the market place, St Mary Magdalene s is ideally placed to serve the local population. The church is open to the public every day, staffed by a team of volunteers who welcome the many visitors from near or far who come to chat, pray, have a cuppa, look around or see where Lord Byron is buried. Engagement and hospitality are key values here, embodied by services of hope and remembrance, pram club, vibrant school outreach and much more besides. The annual Christmas-tree festival attracts over 4,000 visitors, providing great opportunities for witness. In the south of the town, St John s fosters close links with local people. Events such as quizzes, jumble sales, concerts and talks arranged by the Hucknall Tourism and Regeneration Group are regularly held at the church and its recently renovated community hall. Christians in Hucknall also work together to further the Gospel. For instance, Churches Together in Hucknall, Linby and Papplewick holds regular interdenominational services and runs a shop, Engage Gifts, staffed by members of various churches. Every Good Friday, hundreds of people join together for worship and follow the cross in a procession of witness through Hucknall. Annual carol services for schools and community groups tell the Christmas story, while the ecumenical Street Pastors team provides practical help and a listening ear to revellers every Friday night. While Hucknall is on the up, we are well aware that there are still large pockets of deprivation here. Through initiatives such as the hugely popular monthly jumble sales offering quality items at rock-bottom prices, our support for the local food bank and regular appeals, St Mary Magdalene s and St John s are actively involved in helping to make life better for those who are struggling. And although there is much going on in our town, we are keen to avoid resting on our laurels. Hucknall is ripe for renewal, with a rich seam of potential still to be tapped. 9

Our Churches - St Mary Magdalene The congregation of St MM share their varied gifts in support of the Church s mission, nurture, outreach, fabric and finance, along with a team of two retired ministers, four readers, and three RLMs. The poet Lord Byron s remains and those of his daughter, Ada Lovelace, are interred in the family crypt beneath the chancel and other heritage aspects are displayed throughout the church. The Church website informs online visitors of the scope of the Church s activities and mission and regular enquiries for occasional offices are now received through it. The Church is open daily and the new cafe area in the south transept is used to welcome visitors to engage with the heritage of the church or to come and pray or just sit and share pastoral concerns. The link between visitors for heritage and welcoming those with pastoral concerns is seen as an important part of the church being open and accessible. However, recruitment and retention of stewards for welcoming and assisting visitors continues to be a challenge. Also important to the community is the John Godber Centre which is the hall attached to St Mary s Church. The links between the church and the hall are made clear through the displays in both the centre and the church. The Centre appeals to both community and business users for regular and ad hoc bookings. It is home to over 50 groups and on average, 1,000 people pass through its doors each week to use the Centre for: - Community weddings, parties, theatre, bereavement support, U3A, playgroups - Business dance schools, martial arts, weight control groups, children s groups, fitness classes - Church Sunday School, Pram Club, Mothers Union, Bible Study. The Centre is in the middle of a five-year plan of refurbishment which so far has seen the refurbishment of the common areas, the two licensed bars and the toilets. The PCC have delegated the day-to-day running and implementation of the plan for the Centre to the John Godber Centre Operating Board which is a team made up of PCC and church members. The PCC also employ a Centre manager and eight part-time staff to run the day to day activities. St Mary s Trading Company Ltd also forms part of the management structure of the Centre and is responsible under the PCC for the running of the party events and the two licensed bars. The Church and Centre together strive to provide links into the wider community and want to work with you to further those links and connections. 10

Our Churches - St John the Evangelist St John the Evangelist Church is a small, friendly church which welcomes everyone, but struggles with low numbers of regular worshippers and the financial responsibilities which fall on a small and elderly congregation. The Church is excited to be moving towards the new parish of Hucknall and to be working with St Mary Magdalene in the mission of God to the community. The community hall has recently been renovated thanks to a WREN grant and local people come to our fairs, jumble sales and social events. As a result of the renovation works, bookings have increased, and among others the hall is used by Weight Watchers, a Zumba group and a day centre for the elderly. Opportunities for worship, faith development and pastoral care are an important part of the work of St John the Evangelist. 12

Our Schools Inspired and guided by the vision that every child in Hucknall should know the name of Jesus, relationships have been built between the Team Ministry and schools throughout the town. Last year alone, over 150 acts of collective worship were led by clergy and lay readers across all schools in Hucknall. We offer guided church visits to support the curriculum, and schools bring children and parents for services on special occasions, such as Christingle and carol services, Education Sunday and Leavers services. A highlight of the year is our Time Travelling project! Over five days, in 2018, 300 children from nine of our local primary schools visited our churches to learn about their history and worship. This is only made possible by a dedicated team of helpers from our congregations. There are particularly close links with the Church of England-aided National Schools, founded in Hucknall is one of the few places in the country to offer church-aided education to children across the entire age spectrum. Our incumbent-designate will be a Governor at Hucknall National Primary School and the vicar of St Peter and St Paul s is a Governor at the National Academy. Quote from Malcolm, the lay reader who leads our ministry to schools: Think about the numbers of children! Ten Hucknall primary schools with a total of approximately 3,400 children under 11 years of age, hear about Jesus each year. And this has been happening in our town for the last 12 years! This was the vision God gave us through prayer, and I believe He wants us not only to continue, but to build on this. With the core values of Care, share, be fair and be the best you can, the National Primary School educates over 400 pupils. An act of worship is held each day; collective worship is led, weekly, by the school s chaplain, a lay reader in the Team Ministry. He also speaks to classes about aspects of faith, while other volunteers from our congregation regularly help with reading and baking, providing valuable opportunities for communication between the generations. The school was rated Good in its most recent Ofsted and SIAMS inspections in National Church of England Academy, with over 1,150 students aged 11-18, has a vision to ensure that all members of the Academy community experience life in all its fullness. They have an ecumenical chaplaincy team and the Academy calendar includes an annual Mission week and Prayer week. The most recent full Ofsted inspection was carried out in October 2014 resulting in a Good overall judgement, together with Outstanding for Leadership and Management. Since September 2016, National s Year 12 and 13 students have been based in a modern building at Hucknall Sixth Form Centre on Portland Road, sharing facilities with their counterparts from the town s Holgate Academy. Sixth form students are given the opportunity to develop in their potential as leaders through Developing Christian Young Leaders groups in which they are encouraged to grow in their gifts and talents and use them to make a positive difference to the lives of those around them. 13

Our Stories We re real people, in life and faith. Read a selection of faith journeys from our wider church family to help get a feel for who we are and what experiences of life and God have shaped us into the people we are, today. My journey to faith was, as is I guess most people s journey to faith, a very bumpy ride. From being a pupil at the National School when pupils went to church for all the Christian festivals, such as Ash Wednesday, Ascension and so on. I came away from school at 15 with one aim: religion - Christianity was not for me. Although I suppose as my life evolved, God already had His hand on my shoulder, and being a patient God He was prepared to wait. The church part of my journey began when my first child was born and it sounded a good idea to have him baptised, followed very quickly by starting a confirmation course. At the time this didn t affect my life, except we began attending church Sunday by Sunday. A church is a strange animal; it can weave you into its fabric without you being aware of what is happening, beginning with the social side, and then church council and things. Still the journey to faith wasn t apparent, no road to Damascus for sure. The turning point: I was thrown out of work, two teenage children, some ordinary days, some very black ones. My mind turned to what can I do; no job on the horizon; family responsibilities mounting. So I asked God for help, and He did. I found a faith, and someone to trust. Now with our family situation I am very glad I found Him. He of course knew all along, and was prepared to wait. Not a very good follower, but He loves and cares for me and my family because He knows I try. I had a reasonably common introduction to church and worship. I decided to start taking my eldest son to Sunday school. I had always considered myself a Christian, but had excuses and reasons why I couldn t go to church regularly. A difficult pregnancy, a premature birth and two operations in the first 6 months of his life made me realise that there was little time for excuses and that I desperately wanted my son to grow up knowing and understanding God s love. So just before his 1st birthday I took my first steps and started to attend Church Next Door. What I hadn t realised is that I needed to take those steps as much for myself as for my son. God had been waiting patiently for me to recognise my own need to build and grow in faith and to understand Him more deeply. As I attended my first courses and prepared for Confirmation, I continued to feel that God was calling me to do more although I couldn t say exactly what the more was! During my Confirmation course, my sister passed away and my Niece came to live with us. It was an incredibly difficult time for my family. There was anger and questions but God and our church family bought us the support and love that we needed to see us through and cemented my faith and trust in God. Since then God has lead me to complete the Journey in Faith course and I am currently training to be a Licensed Lay Minister and exploring whether or not ordination is what God is calling me and my family to.
