Preschool/Kindergarten Teacher Written by Robin Peddy A native of Bossier Parish, LA, Robin Peddy was saved at the age of nine. Later as a teenager, she began attending Bossier City Missionary Baptist Church (now known as Stockwell Road MBC) with her high school sweetheart. Under the shepherding of Bro. Bill Pickard and this loving church family, Robin was baptized, joined the membership and began to grow spiritually. Her love for Wade Peddy also grew into a Godcentered marriage and family that now includes four daughters: Jamie (and husband, Jacob), Emily, Leighann and Hannah. The Peddy family also is blessed with two granddaughters, Jaycee and Ryleigh. Her husband, Wade, surrendered to the ministry in February Since then, the family has served at Bethany MBC in Alexandria, LA, and currently at Bethel #2 MBC in Rison, AR, where Bro. Wade serves as pastor. Currently, Robin s service to the Lord includes teaching Sunday School, BTC and a ladies Wednesday night Bible study. She initiated and directs a children s chapel ministry and labors in various areas of VBS. Besides writing VBS materials, Robin also conducts yearly workshops across Arkansas and Louisiana. In addition, the Peddys and the Bethel #2 Youth make yearly summer mission trips to the Navajo Nation Indian Reservation where, through the VBS ministry, the next generation is learning how to share Christ with others. address: wpeddy@tds.net Our team EDITOR IN CHIEF: Kyle Elkins Kyle.Elkins@bogardstore.org BUSINESS MANAGER: Wayne Sewell Wayne.Sewell@bogardstore.org CHILDREN S EDITOR: Libby Gill ILLUSTRATOR: Connie Spears GRAPHIC ARTISTS: Shawn Blase, Jeff Allen Greg Hilterbrand LAYOUT DESIGNERS: Cindy Butler, Ashley Elkins Tammie Sutton CONTENT EDITORS: Terry McKellar, Carolyn Burks Deby Turrentine, Joni Curtis PRINT PRODUCTION: Charles Easley Copyright 2015 Bogard Press 4605 N. 5 Summer camp can be one of the most rewarding experiences in a child s life. It can provide each child who attends with a community of caring mentors who provide the education that leads to appreciation of life. Possible outcomes from attending new friendships, learning skills to overcome challenges, and building character all equip the campers for bigger, brighter lives down the road. In addition to the great friendships and lasting memories, many life skills can also be learned. Unfortunately, many children may never get to go to camp that is until now. This summer, every child who attends VBS 2015 at your church, will attend Camp Courageous. With you as their trail guide, each camper in your care will discover God s plan for salvation, learn how to pray, how to appreciate their church as the body of Christ, how to value and participate in true worship and how to share Jesus with others. Each lesson will equip the camper for the Christian life and will take place at a different and unique location at the camp. So lace up your hiking boots and grab your backpack for the experience of a lifetime. Now is your opportunity to lead your little campers as you follow Jesus to the good life the genuine Christian life! Equipping for Preschool/Kindergarten Never too young to learn about God If you signed up for this age-group thinking you re just going to babysit for a couple of hours, you re in for a big surprise. Studies have proven that children learn more in their first two years than in any other time of their lives. Likewise, children of this age have a great opportunity to form strong spiritual foundations. Therefore, as their teacher, you have the responsibility to introduce the children in your class to spiritually healthy habits like prayer and the reality of God s Word. Cultivating such behaviors at this early age will produce souls receptive to the Holy Spirit s call later. Each child is different It is God s desire for everyone to see all children as He sees them through a heart of love (Matthew 18:14). Keep in mind that VBS is an outreach ministry. Its goal is to reach others for the cause of Christ. Christ loves them all, died for them all, and now He has placed them in your classroom. Open your heart, mind and arms to them and be ready to share with them the love of Jesus Christ. Learn by Experience Young children are constantly learning, even while constantly on the move. They do so by seeing, doing, touching and participating. A child this age will retain far more of what he experiences than from what he hears. Therefore, enhance the lesson by using teaching tools that will provoke as many senses as possible. Stimulate the eyes with bright, colorful visuals, the nose with pleasant smells, the hands with tactile objects, even the taste buds can be strong triggers to memory. When decorating your room, keep the age and size of your students in mind. Make sure to place visuals at their eye level. Get on your knees to see your room from their prospective. If available, use size appropriate tables and chairs. When space allows, divide your room into sections that can be used at different times during your class time. For instance, sit on the floor during lesson time and use the table for the activity pages. Remove all possible distractions like toys, books, crayons from curious eyes and busy hands until such time they are needed. The Camp Courageous Director s Plan Book has illustrations and directions for room décor for each day. The Room Decorations Transparency Book is also available for making lesson specific wall murals. Sound and scent makers also always provide the extra touch to make the scene come to life. These are all suburb tools for transforming your room into an exciting lesson experience. Introduction 5
You can make things even more authentic by dressing the part. Outfit yourself as a trail guide in khakis, hiking boots and a hat. Pack a backpack with all the items linked to the lessons this week: Bible, binoculars, rope, map and a compass. For those who choose, step back in time by dressing the part of a Bible character whom might have witnessed the event. Ready for Action The more the children in your class participate, the more they will learn. Scientific studies have proven that when the body is engaged, so is the brain. However this can cause a problem if you don t have enough support. The younger the children are in your classroom, the more assistance you re going to need, not only in the classroom but in getting them from place to place. Always be early to class and never go it alone. Take full advantage of any offers to help. As the old saying goes, Expect the best but prepare for the worst. Give Your Best When thinking ahead to VBS know that there is no such thing as beginning too early. With this particular age-group the more you can accomplish ahead of time the better. Children in this age-group have a short attention span so be organized. You will lose their attention if you are fumbling around looking for something. Here is a list of some things you can do to avoid the stress that comes from waiting until the last minute: Start today looking through your materials and praying for the Lord s guidance. Familiarize yourself with the different lessons, their various activities, and start collecting all the needed supplies now so that by VBS week you know the Bible lessons and their Memory Verses backward and forward. Try activities beforehand to make sure they can be done in your allotted time and available space. Have each child s materials prepared for him as much as possible and placed in individual clear ziplock bags prior to the activity. You won t have enough time to teach two year-olds how to use scissors. Provide glue sticks for the children to use. Bring to class only the materials needed for that day. Be sure to be prepared for more children than expected. Using Your Preschool/Kindergarten Materials This teacher book, as well as the corresponding visuals are made as guides to aid you, the teacher, in preparing your VBS lessons. The teacher book is full of ideas and activities designed to help you teach the overall aim of each lesson. Remember, the heart of any Bible lesson is the actual Bible account and its application, but the organized and prepared teacher will have no problem completing every element provided in an hour. The visuals are companions to the teacher book and contain the teaching pictures, patterns (with instructions) along with some of the games and activities referred to in the teacher book. Camp Supplies The ministry of Vacation Bible School can in itself be expensive to the churches that host them. Start early and take every opportunity to save a dime when gathering the supplies needed for your class. Search for needed items at home and the catch all closet at church. Next, make a needed list of supplies and post it at church for donations. Finally, take your list of remaining items to you local dollar store. With a few exceptions, almost everything can be purchased there leaving only a minimal dent in your or your church s pocketbook. Additional Resources Even though there is a wealth of ideas contained within these materials, don t stop there. Bogard Press offers a wide range of supplemental resources to supply all your VBS needs. Just visit and click on the VBS link. Follow us on Facebook, Pinterest or Twitter. You will be surprised at how many additional ideas you can find. Each Lesson Contains: Bible Background: This section is a study guide to aid the teacher in preparing for the lesson. It is not meant to take the place of your own personal Bible study and not designed to be read to the children during the lesson time. Attention Getter: This section s game or activity is meant to get things started by involving the children as a group. The intent is to introduce the lesson in a fun and exciting way. Bible Account: Having been introduced to the lesson through the Attention Getter, direct that attention to the Bible account. It needs to be told from your perspective, one that comes from the Holy Spirit s leading and not this or any other writer s. Any account becomes more believable if it comes from firsthand knowledge. Yes, this will take plenty 6 Junior Teacher for Grades 5 and 6
of prayer and individual Bible study time of your own to be accomplished effectively. Children are very perceptive and can quickly detect halfhearted preparation. The visuals come with many colorful teaching materials designed to help your students visualize the Bible account you re sharing with them. If your memory needs a little help, use the backs of the visuals to write notes about key elements about the lesson you don t want to forget to share with our class. Lesson Purpose: Even the best taught Bible account can turn into a missed opportunity to teach a life lesson unless the spiritual truth rooted within is revealed and applied to daily life. Take advantage of the object lessons and activities available within each to drive home the applications in ways that are fun and easy for the children to understand and remember. Memory Verse Activity: Scripture memorization should start as soon as a child can form words and sentences. Scripture should not only be remembered but understood and applied to everyday life. These activities are designed to help your students accomplish that while having fun at the same time. Help the children to understand the words they are repeating and know that they come from the Scriptures. Mark the verse s place in your Bible and always read it directly from its pages. Use the inside cover of each set of activity pages as a place to keep a record of the Memory Verses learned throughout the week. Activity Pages: Designed especially for preschoolers (two- and three-year olds) and kindergarteners (four- and five-year olds), the activity pages are the written work each child will complete each day. Order one set for each student. Each set contains five activity pages, one for each day of VBS. The front page includes an abbreviated Bible account; while the other pages contain lesson review, purpose and Memory Verse activities, complete with stickers to be used with each. Located on the inside of the cover page of each set is a page that can be used as a record of attendance and Memory Verse memorization. Camp Courageous Bulletin Board The Camp Courageous Equipping for Life bulletin board is designed to provide an overview of the week s adventures in an eye-catching way. It can be used in the classroom, hallway or even as a door decoration. Introduction 7

Aim: By the end of this lesson the student will know that Christ offers salvation for him and that Christ must be received to become his Savior. Memory Verse: John 1:12, But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name. Lesson Purpose: Students will understand God s plan of salvation. BIBLE BACKGROUND Nearing the end of Jesus earthly ministry, He and His disciples traveled through the town of Jericho (Luke 19:1). The town lies only six miles from the Jordan River and east of Jerusalem some fifteen miles. In just days, Jesus would return to Jerusalem to be crucified, His purpose here on earth complete. Surely, these coming events plagued His thoughts as He walked the dusty road toward town. Nonetheless, there was a purpose for first going to Jericho. There was at least one man there whom Jesus had a desire to meet his name was Zacchaeus. Zacchaeus was a well-known person in Jericho. He was the chief tax collector in town and owner of the terrible reputation that came with the job (verse 2). He was not only viewed as working for the enemy (Rome) but also as an extortionist, taking way more money than was actually due and keeping it for himself. This practice had made him a rich, yet hated man. Not only do the Scriptures offer insight into Zacchaeus social stature but his physical one as well. Due to his short height, Zacchaeus was unable to see over the large and growing crowd who gathered to witness Jesus pass through their town (verse 3). To get a better vantage point, Zacchaeus, ran up the way and climbed into a sycamore tree beside the road (verse 4). In Jericho, these trees grow some thirty to forty feet tall with high limbs. In that tree, Zacchaeus was sure to have the perfect view. Why would Zacchaeus be so interested in seeing Jesus? No doubt he had heard the many accounts of His teachings and claims. Perhaps he had heard of the miracles Jesus had performed. It s even conceivable that Zacchaeus maybe knew blind Bartimaeus, whose sight Jesus had restored as He came into town. Maybe, in spite of his power, position and prosperity, Zacchaeus was a miserable, lonely man who knew something was missing from his life. Possibly he began to think about what Jesus could do for him. Whatever the reason, Zacchaeus was determined to see Jesus for himself. As Jesus and the disciples approached the tree, Jesus looked up, saw Zacchaeus and said, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house (verse 5). He was surely taken by surprise that not only had Jesus noticed him on his perch, He knew his name. Jesus call was clear and to the point. All that Zacchaeus needed to do was make a decision stay or obey. Happily and in a hurry, Zacchaeus shimmied down that tree and received Lesson 1 - Decision Divide 9
Camp Courageous name tags Jesus (verse 6). However, the reception here was twofold. Before Jesus ever entered into Zacchaeus house, He was accepted into Zacchaeus heart. Joyful as Zacchaeus was, the crowd seemed insulted by Jesus actions. After all, if Jesus knew his name, surely He knew his character. Why would He choose such a sinner to associate with, they wondered (verse 7). However, it wouldn t be long before the opinions of the people of Jericho changed concerning Zacchaeus. Jesus presence in his home brought about conviction. That conviction lead to repentance which resulted in a life changed forever. He confessed his wrongs before the Lord and determined to make amends to everyone he had wronged. He promised payback, not just what the law demanded, but four times that amount to everyone he cheated (verse 8). Following Zacchaeus conversion, Jesus declared to all the true purpose of His visit, to seek and to save that which was lost (verse 10). It was curiosity that sent Zacchaeus up in that tree to get a glimpse of Jesus. Yet, it was the will of the Father that brought Jesus down that Jericho road in the first place to seek and save a man who would place his faith in Him. What a picture Zacchaeus is for those of this world who have yet to meet the Lord Jesus. They long for something they cannot have. They are spiritually hungry but are never satisfied. Then, one day a person see something different in someone s life or through some event that takes place in his own life, he is introduced to Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit begins His work of conviction and the individual finds himself at Decision Divide. There he must make a choice stay in his current condition or obey the Spirit s call. The call to salvation is the same today as it was in Zacchaeus day. The Lord s directions to Him were simple and clear. Today, He has provided clear directions in His Word. I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me (John 14:6). Jesus way is as simple as ABC: Admit you are a sinner and need Him (Romans 3:23), Believe that Jesus died for your sins (Acts 16:31), and Call upon Him to save you (Romans 10:13). To be saved, one must come down from wherever he is in life to receive Jesus. The Bible is clear, only through faith in Jesus can one enter into a saving relationship with God (John 3:16; 8:24; Ephesians 2:8, 9). One of the greatest thrills in the life of a saved child of God is to lead another to Jesus. Sharing the gift of eternal life with someone else should be the purpose of every born-again believer. At least it is God s plan for all of His children. Sadly, not all will respond to His purpose for their lives. This week you will have that opportunity to share the good news. Life is too short and eternity is too long to risk delay. ATTENTION GETTER Zacchaeus Finger Play Welcome each child individually as he arrives. Take care to learn each name as you present name tags to all. Having gathered the children around you in a circle on the floor, take a moment to introduce yourself and recognize each child present. Discuss how special their names are and what great thought their parents must have put into choosing each one. Tell them even though they have yet to meet Jesus, He knows not only their names but everything there is to know about them. Take this opportunity to also introduce the name of the other person they will be learning about today Zacchaeus. After leading the children in pronouncing everyone s name correctly, lead them in a chorus of Zacchaeus Was a Wee Little Man complete with hand motions. Zacchaeus Was a Wee Little Man Zacchaeus was a wee little man and a wee little man was he He climbed up in a sycamore tree for the Lord he wanted to see And as the Savior passed that way, He looked up in the tree And He said, Zacchaeus, you come down For I m going to your house today, Yes, I m going to your house today. 10 Preschool/Kindergarten Teacher for Ages 2-5
BIBLE ACCOUNT Meeting the Savior Luke 19:1-10 Equipped with the combination of the Bible Background, activity pages and your own personal Bible study and prayer time, you are now ready to relate the account of how Zacchaeus met Jesus. Make sure to use words and terms that this age-group can easily understand. Ahead of time, locate and cut out the teaching pictures. Gather the children around you and reveal each of the pictures. Without disclosing the account, question the children about each one: what are these people doing, what s this man doing, who you think this person is, does he look happy or sad and so forth. After everyone has had anopportunity to participate, arrange the pictures on the table in random order before the group. As you narrate the events of Luke 19:1-10, have the children identify each picture that illustrates that portion of the Bible account and arrange them in chronological order as the events progress. LESSON PURPOSE Ryleigh Is a Wee Little Girl With the children still gathered around you and the Bible account of Zacchaeus fresh on their minds, make the application personal using the Zacchaeus Was a Wee Little Man song used at the beginning of class, but this time with a twist. One by one, insert each child s name into the following revised version and sing it to each while encouraging the group to sing along. (child s name) is a wee little (girl/boy) Zacchaeus Meets Jesus Teaching Pictures (Preschool/ Kindergarten Visuals) And a wee little (girl/boy) is (she/he) To VBS (she/he) came today For God (she d/he d) like to meet So we opened up God s Word just now To see what it had to say And (child s name), Jesus says... He is the only way, Yes, He is the only way. MEMORY VERSE ACTIVITY Who s in That Tree? Prior to class time, prepare this activity by first locating the patterns. Copy them onto cardstock or construction paper or onto white copy paper and glue onto the thicker paper and cut out. Punch holes where indicated. Pre-thread the yarn through the holes on Zacchaeus to save time. During class time, introduce the children to the Memory Verse and repeat it with them until they can recite it together with you in unison. Distribute the Zacchaeus and the tree page to the children for coloring. When finished, Zacchaeus and the Memory Verse Tree Patterns (Preschool/ Kindergarten Visuals Instructions) Colored cardstock or construction paper Scissors Glue or glue sticks Yarn (cut into 18" lengths) Lesson 1 - Decision Divide 11
Preschool Activity Pages Kindergarten Activity Pages Crayons or colored pencils or waterbased markers Stickers attach the Zacchaeus piece to the tree with the yarn. Tie the two ends of the yarn together at the back securely (with very little slack) and show the children how to manipulate Zacchaeus up and down in the tree with a tug of the yarn. As you do so, have the children again recite the verse with you. ACTIVITY PAGES Page 1 Meeting the Savior With energy and enthusiasm, read the Bible account of Zacchaeus to the children. Have the children identify the pictures as you read about them. Page 2 Where and How After reading the question to the children, assist them in choosing and coloring the circle next to the correct answer. Page 3 Decision Divide As the children color the picture, read the Bible verse to them. Help them to understand that one day they will have to make a choice to follow Jesus or not. Encourage all the children to learn all they can about the Savior so that they will make the right choice when that day comes. Page 4 The Bible Says... Recite the Memory Verse aloud together with the children, placing emphasis on each phrase. Discuss what each phrase means and how it applies to them today. CRAFT and Game Time Refer to Camp Courageous Game Book and Camp Courageous Craft Book for additional activities and craft ideas. 12 Preschool/Kindergarten Teacher for Ages 2-5
