5 Immanuel Baptist Church Newsletter April 2011 Pastor s Page Page 5 From Our Pastor s Heart The Old Rugged Cross Made The Difference Please read John:16-37 This is a very special time of year for those of us who know the Lord Jesus Christ. To me, it is far more special than Christmas. As we approach the time when we will celebrate the resurrection of our Lord from the dead. It is a time for believers to think about the things that really matter in life. The things that make life worth living and the things that have shaped us into what we are today. Easter is a time to remember the cross. It is a time to remember that over 2000 years ago, God loved me so much that He sent His Son Jesus Christ to die on a cross so that I might be saved. It is a time for me to remember that, while my upbringing, my education, and my experiences have contributed to who I am, It was the cross of Calvary that made the difference in my life. Let s look at the Cross of Calvary for a moment: Ι The Trip To The Cross: Pilate delivered his prisoner to the cross, but God was fulfilling a prophesy. Calvary was not an accident, it was a divine assignment designed to purchase salvation for sinners. Jesus was delivered to a place called, The place of a skull. It was a place associated with death in the minds of the people of Jerusalem. Yet it was a place prepared by God. Jesus carrying His own cross symbolizes that He was bearing upon Himself the sins of the world. The cross was more than wood, it represented the heartbreak, the pain, the slavery and the debt of sin. That s what Jesus was carrying that day! When He arrived at Calvary, He was crucified. They nailed our Lord to the cross with spikes through His hands and feet. Verse 18 says in the midst, When Jesus is in the midst things happen. One of the thieves came to faith in Jesus that day and was saved. When Jesus is in the midst a person will make decisions. Jesus cannot be evaded or avoided. Π The Testimony of the Cross: Two events occurred at Calvary that day that gave loud testimony to what was taking place: First, The testimony of writing. The Sign, King of the Jews The sign became a giant tract for all who were passing by. Jesus is pictured as a universal Savior. That does not mean that He automatically saves everybody, but will save anyone who will come to Him regardless of their social standing or background. Second, The testimony of the Wager. The solders gambled for the garment. This garment was worn by the High Priest. He alone is qualified for the job! He is in Heaven today carrying out the job for each one of us. ШThe Triumph of the Cross: There are three statements in these verses that teaches us the truth that Calvary was a place of triumph. First, Compassion: While dying, Jesus did not forget to take care of His people. He made sure that Mary, His mother was taken care of for the rest of her life. His actions are symbolic of the fact that He will take care of us. Second, Connection: The statement I thirst describes for us a clear picture that Jesus was enduring great pain. He went through pain for you and for me. He was suffering our pain so that we might enjoy His Heaven. Third, Completion: It is Finished. Jesus is saying, It is Done. Jesus was looking at His Father and saying, Father, I have finished my assignment. Our salvation rests upon the finished work of Jesus on the cross. There is nothing left to do but receive His salvation. Can I ask you a couple of questions? Does the truth that Jesus did all of this for you move your heart? Are you aware that He did it all for me and for you? The old rugged cross can make a difference in this world. But only if one will receive the finished work of Jesus as their own. Take a few minutes right now to worship our Lord for the old rugged cross. Halleluiah, He is Alive Pastor Michael & Terri Psalm 19:14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.
6 Page 6 Immanuel Baptist Church Newsletter April 2011 Immanuel Baptist Church s VBS is scheduled for July 10th July 14th With Family Night Friday, July 15th. It is not too early to start preparing! Please let Vicki Burks know if you plan to teach a class. If you taught last year and do not plan to teach this year please let her know ASAP so she can prepare. If you haven t taught before and would like to please let her know this as well. There is a place for everyone who wants to help! Things could be worse. Suppose your errors were counted and published every day, like those of a baseball player. ~Author Unknown John 8:7 & 11 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. When Jesus had lifted up Himself, and saw none but the woman, He said unto her, Woman, where are thine accusers? Hath no man condemned thee? She said, No Man Lord. And Jesus said to her, Neither do I condemn thee: Go and sin no more. Pamila will be out of the office Wednesday, April 27th through Saturday, April 30th to attend the Tennessee Baptist Conventions Secretaries Association Yearly Conference. What Is GPS?
