"... hold fast to the traditions whih you have reeived." II Thess. 2:15 ORTHODOX ROMA N CAT HOLIC MOV EMENT, INC. POST O FFICE BOX 542 STRAT FO RD, CONNECTICUT 6497 I 2 3 I 3 7 s o ORCM MISSAL When it beame apparent that our searh for a. l arge quantity of traditional Roman Catholi missals, whih we ould make available for sale, was deidedly fruitless, an alternative route took on favorable light. It is with eager antiipation that we proeed on that route, whih is the publishing by our ORCM of a fully traditional missal. for Sundays, holydays and major feasts, toward our goal of making this essential and valuable item available to the publi. The missal we have hosen, and we hope you'll agree, is a beautiful text having, aside from the Common and proper of the Mass, a omprehensive olletion of prayers and devotions, partiularly direted to the Immaulate Heart of Mary. In addition, we plan to inlude a se? tion ontaining those papal derees in English (suh as, QUO PRIMUM, DE DEFECTIBUS, et.) whih appeared in every traditional altar missal for some 4 years. We will try to have the extensive and diffiult proess of publiation ompleted early next year so that the missal might be ready for sale by Easter, although this is by no means definite. Happily we dediate our efforts, and we pray that they are worthy, in the ompilation of this missal to the Immaulate Heart of Mary under whose guidane,we humbly trust, that our endeavors will be of benefit to traditional Catholis now and for years to ome. EDITOR: FR. FRANCIS E. FENTON, STL - No.23 Ot.11, 1976 FR, FENTO N TEM PORARILY GROUNDED On Thursday, September 16 Fr. Fent on underwent major surgery for an uler. We hasten to say that, as of this writing (September 28), Father, although understandably weak, is reovering quite niely, thanks, no doubt, to the many prayers on his behalf by our ORCM'ers. We wish to relate Father's sinere appreiation for these prayers and for the other ats of thoughtfulness shown to him, suh as "get well" ards and messages, et. Father also wishes to express his regrets at the neessary postponement of a few of the leture programs (please see Page 2 for the updated shedule) 7 neessary beause of the time required for Father's reuperation. It is also with sorrow that some of Father's orrespondene has gone without personal reply on his part, but we trust in your understanding in this matter. At about this time you might be wondering just who omposed these newsnotes. Although Fr. Fen.tort ustomarily writes these lines, he, of ourse, is in no ondition at this time to do so, even though, God bless the Irish, he does attempt to do a small amount of work at his hospital bedside. So, our ORCM offie staff must step forward and take the blame for these ramblings. And, in ase you might have further question, let us assure you that the editorial does live up to its name as having been written by the editor, for it was prepared by Father before his hospitalization. Published every 5 days and offered free. Individuals wishing to be on our mailing list for this newsletter must request it personally. This newsletter may not be revrodued in whole or in part without the permission of the ORCM.

By FR. FRANCIS E. FENTON, STL A Few Refletions surely without preedent in the annals of the Christian enturi.es has been t he destrut ion whih,. humanl y speaking, ha s been wrought upon the Roman Catholi Chur h over the past dozen years or so. Never before has the Mystial Body of Christ been in the utterly dire straits that it is in this our day. As a natural reation to the inroads and the onslaughts of the Churh t s enemies, informed and onerned Roman Catholis established t raditional groups and organizations for the purpose of preserving the totality of their Roman Catholi faith As time passed and as more and more Roman Catholis began to omprehend what was happening to their beloved Churh, these traditional groups and organizations multiplied so that today there are sores of them in the USA alone While nearl y all are, to the best of my knowledge, either loal or regional efforts, there are two national traditional organizations on the Amerian sene, the Soiety of Saint Pius X of Arhbishop Marel Lefebvre and our Orthodox Roman atholi Movement (ORCM). The mere fat that t raditional Catholis have rallied to the hallenge of defending and preserving their God-given faith in the present risis is, to be sure, an enouraging and gratifying thing in itself Had this not ourred, how muh worse the deplorable Churh situation would be. On the other hand, how muh brighter the future might be and how muh more effetive the efforts of traditional Catholis, were it not for t he absene of one very essential ingredient among the groups and organizations they h-ave, formed, and that essential quality is unity. And herein lies a great tragedy indeed, the near-total lak of unity in the traditional ranks a mong the numerous assoiations whih presently exist. Division, dissension, strife would seem to be the order of the day. Hassling, infighting, animosity appear to abound. While our ORCM has, from its origin, endeavored to avoid being a ontributory fator to the widespread disord that mars the traditionalist ause and so muh hinders its progress, and while, thanks to the good will and ooperative spirit of our ORCM ' ers around the ountry, we have been able to maintain a signifiant degree of unity in our ranks, yet we too have had, and do have, our problems and headahes and disappointments. Indeed, it is my onvition that there are some self-styled traditional Catholis who thrive on dissension and who simply are not at ease where peae and tranquility reign. At any rate, nowhere, from my observation, is the devil more notably at work than he is in his efforts to divide and fragmentize the ranks of traditional Catholis, and how suessful he is! If there is any ause or movement in the world where unity should prevail, surely it should be in the ranks of those who are dediated to the apostolate of the pre- 3.

servation of the One True Churh. Yet disunity, ontention, hostility, so onsistently plague those ranks that it would seem that nothing less than a mirale ould bring unity to them. Let us traditionalists pray and work long and hard towards suh unity though, for without it the a- postolate to whih many of us are devoting our lives will never realize the tremendous potential it has and our noblest efforts will have limited suess at best. Whih brings me to the purpose of this editorial. While all "bona fide" Roman Catholi traditionalist organizations and groups have the same ultimate objetives, yet there are numerous differenes among them, some of whih are deep-rooted and all of whih ontribute to the dissensions and divisions and disord previously indiated. Hene, so that everyone will know just where the ORCM stands on the major topis that divide the traditionalist amp, the following listing presents in brief our position on those issues: The ORCM onsiders the Novus Ordo 1 a disaster. While refraining, for lak of onlusive proof, from any delaration that it is always and in all irumstanes invalid, we unhesitatingly state that it is the obligation of Roman Catholis not to attend it and that those who do so are partiipating in a false form of worship and, hene, one unaeptable_ to God. r The ORCM likewise onsiders Pope 2 Paul VI a disaster. The near demolition, humanly speaking, of the Roman Catholi Churh and his despiable ollaboration with Communism during the ourse of his pontifiate make of that pontifiate one of the most tragi in the history of the Churh. The shameful reord he has amassed speaks for itself in the minds of all informed and realisti and authenti Roman Catholis. Despite that reord, however, it is the position of the ORCM that Pope Paul VI is a legitimate pontiff, if for no other reason than that any proposed illegitimay (whih some traditionalists laim) is not, in 4, our opinion, onl usively proved. Hene, insofar as he teahes and rules in harmony with tradition, we obey and follow him; insofar as he does not, we refuse to do so. 3 The ORCM does not promote, nor enourage belief in, any of the alleged visionaries of our day and their reported apparitions and messages. All of them, or at least all of them about whom this writer has any knowledge, are suspet on one sore or another and raise serious doubts as to their authentiity. Those Roman Catholis who take them seriously manifest, in our opinion, a lak of good judgment and do harm to the ause Catholiism. of genuine traditional The ORCM does not believe that 4 the Jews are the "real enemy." That some Jews form a part of the power (Master Conspiray) that is the major "real enemy," there is no question, but this is hardly justifiation for ondemning all Jews. Yet this is what some professed traditional Catholis seem to do, a position hardly onsistent with the mind and teahing of the One True Churh. Aording to suh "logi," all Russians should be ondemned beausists. a number of them are Commun 5 The ORCM does not believe that, if or when the traditional Latin Mass is not available in a partiular area, traditional Roman Catholis are justified in attending Mass in shismati hurhes. Attendane at suh Masses has always been forbidden by the Roman Catholi Churh and that prohibition is just as muh in effet today as it ever was. Also, if a traditional Roman Catholi has a well-founded doubt as to the moral permissibility of attending a partiular Mass, then he or she should not attend. The ORCM has no onnetion, no 6 alliane, no affiliation with any other group or organization, whether traditional Roman Catholi or seular. Speifially is this statement made with the John Birh Soiety (JBS) in mind. While this writer is - ont'd on page 6, olumn 1 -

an open letter to BY FR,ROBERT MKENNAJ OP "THE WANDERER" MR. A.J. MATT, JR., EDITOR Dear Mr. Matt: The lead editorial of THE WANDERER for July 29, signed "The Editors," auses Arhbishop Lefebvre of shism and voies onern for the many Catholis who support him, lest they be "engulfed" in it. The ruial question for every onerned Catholi is whether Arhbishop Lefebvre and the traditionalist Catholis in general are shismati or the Catholi establishment apostate. (By the "establishment" we mean the organization reognized by ivil law, whether or not it an honestly be alled Catholi). While it is admittedly less traumati, and perhaps more plausible, to believe that the traditionalist minority is shismati, the truth does not depend on numbers, nor would the Churh ease to exist if one supposed the defetion of most priests and bishops, or their virtual extintion. The Apostles, for example, - were quite a minority. And how many English bishops remained Catholi at the time of the Reformation? THE WANDERER rests its argument for shism in the ase of the traditionalists on the statement: "To rejet magesterial authority in the name of Tradition is no less erroneous than to rejet it in the name of theologial Modernism." First, we note the impliation, habitual with all non-traditionalists (Pope Paul too), that truth like virtue (moral virtue) lies between two extremes --- as if religion and our faith were a question of politis and the pitfalls of exesse"'s! The fat is that "liberal-onservative-ultraonservative" terminology is a subtle, satani substitution for the real issue in religion of being either orthodox or unorthodox. No middle ground there! We are either "with or against" Christ and His Churh. Seondly, we ask whether by the statement quoted the editors of THE WANDERER mean to imply that the authorities of the Churh are above her Tradition, rather than responsible for its defense, preservation, and integral handing down. St.Thomas Aquinas for his part says, in the very ontext of justifying the traditional eremonies of the Mass, "The ustom of the Churh is infallible, being instruted by the Holy Spirit." Thirdly, the editor's statement distinguishes between the Magesterium ("magesterial authority") and Tradition. But are the two independent, as seems to be implied, rather than the Magesterium guided by, or at least expressed in, Catholi Tradition? The offiial atehism of the Churh, the Catehism of Trent, gives the primay to Tradition, alling it "the interpreter and guardian of Catholi truth." If the Pope and the bishops an laim this role for themselves, it is only to the extent that they are faithful to Tradition. But it is the underlying error and subtle heresy of "Vatian 2" to question the divine inspiration and infallibility of Catholi traditions. Pope Paul himself, when promulgating his Nevus Ordo, erroneously endorsed this misunderstanding of the Ordinary Magesterium saying, "We annot deny that Tradition ontains many transitory and even faulty elements." Suh a position stands ondemned by his predeessor, Pope Pius VI, as "false, temerari- - ontinued on page 7-5,

6, A FEW REFLECTIONS, ont'd from P. 4 a proud member of the JBS and stands ever ready to defend it against all its ritis, whoever they may be, yet the ORCM and the JBS are two entirely distint entities and there is no alliane of any kind between them, and anyone who says or implies otherwise is, simply put, a liar! There is no sounder, no more thoroughly traditional Roman Catholi organization than the ORCM this side of Heaven! This is not said in any boastful spirit but simply to state a fat of life. The stand we take, our priniples, our goals are in every respet onsistent, in harmony with those of the traditional, the true Roman Catholi Churh founded by the Son of God some 19 enturies ago. All we are trying to do, with the indispensable grae of God, is to preserve our divine faith, to "hold fast to the traditions" we have reeived. In fat, the very purpose of our existene might be orretly desribed as a holding ation, a temporary arrangement, made neessary by the risis in the Churh, for the sole purpose of preserving the faith intat and inviolate for the duration of that risis. Suh is our apostolate. That we are, thanks to God and to the spiritual and material and moral support we reeive from loyal ORCMers around the ountry, that we are arrying out that apostolate to the full extent that our limited manpower permits is, I believe, evident to all who have been reading eah issue of this newsletter. And be assured, one and all, that, the good Lord willing, the ORCM is here for the duration! FR, J OHN A, PA RK On August 28, 1975 Fr. John Anthony Park, who assisted our ORCM for some two years, passed away. Born in Rokport, Indiana on November 27, 195, Fr. Park is survived by three brothers and one sist er. A traditional High Requiem Mass was offered for him on August 31 by the Right Rev. Msgr. Paul F. Mareau. Father Park's faithful servie in provision of the Mass and Saraments t o our ORCM ' ers in the Orlando, Flor ida a rea will be sor ely missed, muh less forgotten. 7 ous, sandalous, perniious, offensive to the ears of the devout, injurious to the Churh and the Spirit of God by whih she is guided, and at least erroneous." (Denz. 1578) Whih Pope are we to believe? Pope paul obviously had no intention of 11 speaking ex athedra" in the talk oasioning his remark. The editorial goes on to onfront two ontentions of the Arhbishop and the traditionalists. The first regards the New Mass. "The basi 11 question," the editors say, is simply this: Does the Pope, as supreme ruler of the Churh, have the authority to replae the Tridentine Mass with the New Ordo? 11 If not, then (they say) "neither did Saint pius V have the authority to establish the Tridentine Mass, whih involved the replaement and abrogation of older forms of the Mass." It will suffie for our purpose here simply to show that the question is not so "simple" as the editors make it. The traditionalists are asking how (at least with anything less than so solemn and unambiguous a deree as was QUO PRIMUM) any Pope an replae a Mass whih a previous Pope said ould never a gain be replaed, going so far as to invoke the wrath of God against "anyone" who would dare to do so! But more importantly still, the question is beyond mere legality. noes the Pope, even as the II suprem: - ruler of the Churh," have the authority to replae the traditional Mass with one whih is, to say the least, unorthodox? Must the Pope be obeyed even when he would make us Protestants with the eumenial New Mass? The editorial next onfronts the "Lefebvre 'movement'" for its opposition to Vatian II. The straw man of "abuses" is set up and the traditionalists solded for refusing the ounil's authority merely beause of "ertain bad things whih have resulted from them," the point being made that anything an be abused and misinterpreted, even the Gospel. "Bad things" sounds like a studied attempt to avoid (the same Gospel's) "evil fruits." Anyway, it is not beause of "bad" results that. we rejet the Counil. Rather we point to its evil fruits as onfirming our ontention that it was a false Counil to begin with, and a mitred revolution within the Churh -- nothing less than a general apostasy from the body of Catholi Tradition. The editors are more to the point in next ontesting the traditionalists on the sore of Vatian II being a merely "pastoral" Counil. Here we may admit their insistene that the avowed purpose of the Counil should not be onfused with its atual ontent or teahings, some of its derees even being entitled "dogmati. " But how naive the suggestion that "the rihes of dogmati teahing for whih Vatian Counil II is responsible" originated with the Counil or ould of themselves justify even the least error or dotrinal ambiguity! The rih foliage of Vatian II verbiage must not oneal its Communisti, Modernisti, and Masoni roots, lately verified in doumentary proof that some of the leading Cardinals in the Vatian are registered Freemasons! (THE WANDERER is silent on this.) The editorial onludes -- more dogmatially than logially: "There is no ability to adhere to any authenti tradition when the dotrinal authority of Vatian Counil II is denied, or when the teahing authority of Pope Paul VI is ignored." UN LESS, we add, the authority of Counil and Pope surpass the Tradition of the Churh. But suh in fat is not her teahing, though it is (impliitly anyway) the mistaken notion of Pope Paul. "That is the stark reality of the situation," and heaven help those who insist on "hardening their hearts in an attempt to justify that attitude" of misplaed priorities. Sinerely in Christ, (Signed) Fr. Robert F. MKenna 7.
