MARY ANDREWS COLLEGE EQUIPPING WOMEN TO SERVE CHRIST 2019 COURSES

A friend of mine is one of the most effective church leaders I know. She s only on staff part-time, but her ministry in caring for the women in her congregation is far-reaching and deeply loving. Whether sitting with an older woman in her home or mentoring young mums with their children, she always seems to be available with a listening ear and wise word. When I asked her how she developed such pastoral skills, she smiled and said without hesitation: A lifetime of study in God s word, personal prayer and focused study in any book or class I can find. In other words, effective pastoral care doesn t just happen. It s nurtured through intentional reflection, personal growth and God s Spirit leading us to the resources we need to be God s hands reflecting his grace. This booklet reflects again the best of ADM in providing such opportunities for equipping God s people to care effectively for those he puts in our lives. Whether you follow our Pathway to Pastoral Ministry, or choose your own pathway through a Certificate or Diploma, I m confident that the mentors and experiences you ll find at MAC will further equip you in your own journey with Jesus as he leads you to caring for others. We look forward to seeing you soon! 3 Why choose Mary Andrews College? Our highly qualified lecturers find great joy in equipping women to serve Christ, particularly those who have not previously studied at a theological college. Our students often comment on the encouragement they have received by studying with other like-minded people. It is a privilege to be part of God s purposes for his Church and his world. I long to see women being intentional about thinking through how they are best equipped and encouraged to partner with God as he builds his Kingdom. Mary Andrews College can play a significant part in equipping you, encouraging you, inspiring you and supporting you as you explore the next step in your life as a Christian. I know life can be busy and we have many pressures and commitments that make it all seem too hard. Our commitment to you is to make it as easy as possible to invest in your relationship with God and to be equipped for the part you play in building his Kingdom. Why not have a look through what we offer and seriously consider whether God wants you to take up this opportunity? It could make the difference not only to your life, but to someone else s life as well. Jackie Rev. Jackie Stoneman Director of Studies MARY ANDREWS COLLEGE 1

Study options There are multiple ways to start your studies at Mary Andrews College. DIPLOMA LEVEL The Diploma level of study is our most in-depth qualification option. Whilst there are no exams, each unit usually requires three assignments that are set by the lecturer. Assignments may include a wide variety of tasks that require thoughtful reflection on what you have learnt. A FEE-HELP loan may be available to help pay for your study. See pages 8-10 for more details. CERTIFICATE LEVEL The Certificate level of study is our entry level qualification option. There are no exams, however each unit typically requires two assignments that are set by the lecturer. Assignments are shorter in length and are not as demanding as those set at Diploma level. The hours required to complete Certificate level study are significantly less than at Diploma level. See pages for more details. AUDITING LEVEL The auditing level of study allows for students to attend lectures and participate fully in class life without having to complete assignments. All of our units are able to be audited and there are no limits as to the combination or number of units that a student can audit. Possible units can be found on pages If you audit a unit, it is important to remember that you do not receive credit for participation towards any kind of qualification, it is for your interest and enjoyment only. Pricing for units depends on the number of lecture hours and is set out at PATHWAY TO PASTORAL MINISTRY/ CHAPLAINCY MAC specialises in pastoral care. If pastoral care is your passion, we have two suggested Pathways to Pastoral Ministry at either Diploma or Certificate level. These Pathways take the guesswork out of which units to choose. Completing one of these Pathways would equip you to be a Community Chaplain, or provide a qualification to pursue pastoral ministry in a variety of settings. Please see pages

LECTURE FORMATS MAC offers classes in flexible formats. Some units are taught fortnightly, while others are taught in intensive mode. To see the latest information about class times visit LOCATION The majority of our units are offered at our City campus, conveniently located next to Town Hall. A variety of diploma units are also offered at Dapto and Emu Plains. STUDY HELP Many students come to MAC excited about learning but unsure about how they will be able to complete assignments. If you feel that your study skills need a refresher, many MAC students have found benefit from attending the free Study Skills Workshops run periodically at MAC. Alternatively, it is possible to audit your first unit to see how the College works before committing to a full course at either Diploma or Certificate level. MARY ANDREWS COLLEGE 5

Pathway to Pastoral Ministry We believe that pastoral care is vital for the flourishing of God s people, and women have an enormous contribution to make. Pastoral care springs from God s compassionate care and his call to care for one another in ways that express his love. Pastoral care stands at the intersection of opportunities both for sharing the gospel, and for facilitating maturing growth of the body of Christ. The effective outworking of pastoral care is grounded in a knowledge of God s word and the shaping of pastoral skills that are an expression of Christ-like character and love. Two Pathways 1 Diploma-level Pathway This Pathway is through the Australian College of Theology s Diploma of Christian Studies (see page 10 for more information), using units that focus on a biblical framework and practical skills for pastoral care. The course has been designed to be completed over two years, however this can be extended up to six years for those who need a more flexible option. These units will be offered on Mondays and Fridays. Year 1 Bible Overview (BB205) Christian Worldview (PE210) Pastoral Care (PC207) Practical Pastoral Care (PC256) Pastoral Care for Those with Mental Illness (PC257) Year 2 Psalms (OT226) God and the Person and Work of Christ (TH210) Pastoral Evangelism (EM236) Disability and God s People (DM223) Ministry with Seniors (PC251) Understanding Grief (MAP21) For more Diploma options which include different units, see pages

MAC has developed two suggested Pathways to Pastoral Ministry that will equip students to have well-rounded, biblically based training in pastoral care. Graduates are enabled to minister in a broad range of pastoral situations in churches, aged care facilities, hospitals and in the community. The Pathways are available in a specific cycle of units regularly offered on specific days in the College timetable. This will maximise the learning opportunity and develop a community of like-minded students who can continue to encourage and support one another beyond their College days. 2 Certificate-level Pathway This Pathway is through the Australian College of Theology s Certificate in Theology (see pages 18-19). It provides an essential grounding in the Bible, and highly practical pastoral care training. This course has been designed to be completed in one year, however this can be extended for those who need a more flexible option. Units of Study Old Testament (OT) New Testament (NT) Christian Belief (CB) Pastoral Care (IPC) Practical Pastoral Care (IAPC) Pastoral Evangelism (PE) For more Certificate options which include different elective units, see pages Introductory Pathway Want to try out studying before committing to a certificate? We offer an Introductory Pathway that could be the right fit for you. Units of Study Pastoral Care (IPC) Practical Pastoral Care (IAPC) On successful completion of these two units students receive a MAC Pastoral Care Award. If you choose to continue your study these two units will count towards a Certificate in Theology. MARY ANDREWS COLLEGE 7
